LINKSYS WRT54G V5 PROBLEM!! =(

Alright so i recently just bought a Macbook two days ago. Ive been using a linksys router wrt54g v5 router at home for about 2 years now. Ever since I added the Macbook to my wireless network i would be on the internet for about 5-10 minutes and then my WHOLE network would lose internet connection including my (2 PCS that are wired to the router) so can someone please help me with this problem? thank you

Aha, that's the problem: the MacBook was clashing with the router because they were both trying to take the same IP address.
Actually your IP addresses need to end in something in the range 1 to 254, as 0 and 255 have special meanings.
Your other choice is to set the router so that it has a fixed address (like x.x.x.1) but also enable DHCP Server mode. That way, all your other machines can use DHCP Client mode, meaning they get an automatic IP address by asking the router.

    Sorry to tell you but there is no fix.  Best bet would be to return it and get a WRT54GL.  This is the Linux version of the WRT54G series.  It has twice the RAM and Flash Memory so it can handle the load.

  • Linksys WRT54G Connection Problem

    I purchased this modem yesterday as i was not able to get my Belkin Pre-N connected so opted to try a different one. The problem is with the desktop, it is hard wired into the router i get IP, Subnet,Gateway and DNS server information but it will not connect to the internet. It's the exact same thing as what the Belkin was doing so i doubt it's a router problem but what do i know. Now if i connect directly to the Linksys Workgroup Switch it works fine. I live in a rural area and wireless with a phone pole and antenna is the only option, so i don't have a modem it's a switch in the house. If i plug directly in the switch all works fine but as soon as i introduce the router nothing works, like i said all info is present but won't connect online. I am having the exact same issue with the wireless laptop as well. Can anyone help?? This is getting so frustrating all i really want is the wireless to work, i can always plug the desktop back in the switch if need be but if i get one or the other working i can use the router straight up. If this helps, when i ping an IP i get results when i ping addresses i get errors which would mean a DNS issue but i'm using the same DNS servers my ISP uses. 2 Modems same problem. Thanks.

    First, let me make sure I have this straight:  Your phone company has a wireless device outside on a telephone pole.  The signal from the device on the telephone pole enters your home on a wire.  The wire goes to the Linksys Workgroup 5 port switch.  The switch is connected by wires to two different computers.  You can get onto the internet on both wired computers at the same time.  You would like to have internet on one wired computer and one wireless computer inside your home.  Did I get this right?
    If so, then it still sounds like the telephone company has a modem/router outside on the telephone pole.  In this case, you would probably need just a WAP (wireless access point), and not a router, connected to the switch.  As I mentioned before, it might be possible to convert your WRT54G into a WAP, but I am not certain about this.
    One more thing.  Doesn't your phone company have a web site with information on how to connect to their system and set up wireless inside your home?  Its hard to believe that you are the first person in your area trying to set up wireless internet inside your home!

  • Linksys WRT54GS anoying Problem

    Hi,
    I just bought a WRT54GS wireless router and it has a very annoying problem. To get it to work with my wireless laptop I need to plug into the router and let the software configure the router and my PC to use the wireless feature.
    EVERY TIME I reboot my machine, I have to walk downstairs, plugin to the router, let it reconfig everything before I can go about my business. To me, this is way too annoying. Think about it, You reboot your machine, then you have to plugin to the router before you can do anything.
    Is their a way where I don't have to keep walking down stairs and going through this hastle every time I reboot?. I would think, I should not have to go through this every time I reboot. I would think that the router would remember the configs.
    Any help would be appreciated since this is not a pain in the ass....

    When you say "let the software configure the router and my PC" what do you really mean?  Are you rerunning the set up?  or ????
    Once set-up the router should never have to be reconfigured unless there is a change.  There is really nothing installed on the computer - just the initial set-up program, but you could have done everything via the web interface and not used it at all.
    I suspect you have an SSID or channel conflict with a neighbor and by walking down stairs your signal is stronger than theirs and you connect.
    Try this:
    - Change the SSID on your router AND laptop (they have to be the same) - but make them something like your pets name or your last name
    - Change the channel to other than 6 - try 2 - the router only needs to be changed, the laptop will follow
    - Turn on SSID broadcast
    - Set-up the wireless security after the above is working for you.
    See the manual for how to do this.
    If you are using XP, to make sure you do not automatically connect to other networks - go to the Wireless Networks tab in the network set-up and change the unsecured network so it does not automatically connect (double click the wireless "stair step" icon in the toolbar, highlight the network name (SSID) of the network that is not yours, click properties, select the connection tab, and uncheck the "connect when this network is available", and click OK).  Do the same for your network when it appears, but check the "connect when..." to always connect to your wireless.

    my company (total:10 pcs) connect to internet via wireless router (wireless function was disabled) thought dsl isp. but the internet connection is not stable, around 2 or 3 days the connection will be disconnected. i need to restart the router. i've tried to upgraged the fireware to latest version but the problems is still exist. what can i do?

    If its new try to return it for a WRT54GL.  The GL will handle the load of 10 pc's.  I have 5 devices feeding off mine all the time and when my boys have friends over they bring their pc's to play.  No reboot or reset needed.

    Cannot get an internet connection attempting to install a Linksys WRT54G router between an Arris TM402P/100 cable modem and the local network.
    Prior Configuration
    Previously had DSL, with the Linksys WRT54G wireless router between the DSL modem and the local network, which worked perfectly.
    New Configuration
    This friend recently changed his broadband from DSL to Comcast cable, and he also has phone and television service over the same connection.  The installation tech connected the cable modem directly to a desktop computer and left the Linksys router out.
    The direct connection between the cable modem and the computer works fine, but he and his wife each have laptops and would like to us the Linksys router to connect wirelessly.

    I cannot find a configuration on the Linksys WRT54G that will allow me to connect to the internet through the Arris TM402P/110 modem.  Have tried (1) setting the Linksys to use a dynamic WAN address, (2) setting the Linksys to static IP 67.185.155.0 with TCP/IP settings taken from the above configuration, (3) cloning the MAC address of the desktop computer's NIC and trying both (1) and (2) again.
    The error message says that the network cable is not connected.  Is it possible that the connection between the router and cable modem requires a cross-over cable?
    Any suggestions?

    on the router's ui... keep the internet type to dhcp....clone the mac address and then do a power cycle...ensure that the modem is completely powered off during the power cycle...if you have a battery back - up , remove the battery...after a minute , put back the battery and then plug in the power cable in the modem...

  • Problem with AEBS-N connecting to Linksys WRT54G over WDS

    I have been trying -- without success -- to connect a new Airport Extreme Base Station-N to an existing Linksys WRT54G. The two devices can communicate over WDS without any encryption but they will not connect via WDS using WPA or WPA2.
    The two MacBooks and the WinXP desktop work fine with the WRT54G over WEP, WPA, or WPA2. All three computers can communicate with the AEBS. The problem is getting the WRT54G and AEBS to communicate over WDS with encryption other than WEP.
    Phone calls to tech support at Apple and Linksys were not productive. The Apple rep walked through all the steps to have AEBS-N join a network via WDS and he found no errors in my setup. He then connected me to the next level support for additional help. The second Apple wireless support tech reviewed the situation and said he had no additional information. Both Apple and Linksys support reps suggested I to "call the other company if their device isn't working" or "post feedback so the developers will be aware." Apple tech support had no details (or none they are willing to share) about how WDS works under WPA/WPA2 in their product; I asked for specific details thinking that a third-party Linksys firmware might offer additional modifications to make the two devices compatible. The Linksys rep was similarly unhelpful in giving WDS details.
    I am fine with using a third-party firmware for the WRT54G if someone has the settings to make these two devices work together.
    This is frustrating because both Apple and Linksys tech support said their products will run WDS under WPA or WPA2 but only with their own products. I suspect each firm has created proprietary WDS implementations because WDS is only a mechanism and not a technical standard (www.ieee802.org/1/files/public/802architecturegroup/802-11/4-address-format.doc).
    I would appreciate any information that might allow upgrading from WEP to WPA/WPA2.

    AEBS: model A1143, firmware 7.3.2
    AirPort Utility v5.3.2
    WRT54G: version 4 (first four of S/N: CDFA), Linksys firmware 4.21.1
    Desktop: Dell Dimension 4800, WinXP-SP3, Linksys WUSB54G (USB wireless access)
    Macbook #1: new aluminum Macbook (late 2008), OSX 10.5.5
    Macbook #2: white Macbook (mid-2008), OSX 10.5.5
    (I am happy to post additional tech details and/or log files upon request).

    Done. I powered off the Airport Extreme Base Station, restarted it and AirPort Utility, and connected to the MacBook via ethernet cable. I then used AirPort Utility to turn off the Airport wireless connectivity in the Extreme Base Station and configured it in Bridge Mode. The Base Station restarted and showed a green light. However, when I went to reactivate Airport as "join WDS network," the light continued to glow green but, there were obvious network problems:
    - ping command to the Airport Extreme Base Station resulted in 100% packet loss, even if the AEBS was connected to MacBook by ethernet cable
    - turning off MacBook wireless connectivity resulted in the MacBook being able to see the AEBS, but the AEBS cannot connect to the Linksys router

    Hi, I am having the same problem -- my 2WIRE modem from AT&T recently blew up. So, I purchased the WRT54GS. As soon as I reconnected the AppleTV to the new router via a wireless connection, all of my machines (Mac and PC) lost their internet connections. I'm seriously considering going out and getting another 2WIRE.

    It wouldn't make that much of a difference, but I already purchased a new LInksys Cisco EA3500, but I cannot get it to do my port forwarding. I have tried everything and nothing works. Have spent hours on the phone with tech support with no solution. My old WRT54GS just simply worked. The port forwarding worked perfect. I have tried the exact same setup in the new EA3500 and no luck no matter what I try.
    So, is there anything I can do to get the old WRT54GS working?

    What happened to the router by the way? Have you checked the power cord if it is the correct one? I already checked on their website and the PSU for this model is 12V 0.5A. You can try to reset also the device for 30 seconds and unplug it after for 30 seconds also and if it is the same thing then perhaps you can try another power outlet to see if leds will lit up properly.

    This is a hardware issue. have you tried different ports on the router.

    Having trouble setting up a linksys WRT54GS router with verizon DSL using a westell 6100F modem. the modem works fine by its self  but the router will not connect  to the internet when installed like the cd tells you to.
    online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

    Ok I found " Installing the liksys wireless router with a westell 6100 modem" in the verizon troubleshooting guides. printed the instructions so I would'nt forget. step 1 open your web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address field.  PROBLEM it comes up with a login screen that I don't know how to sign into. tried the obvious stuff. cannot get past the login screen. I knew this sounded to easy to be true. anyone have any ideas? 

  • MacBook Pro can't obtain IP address from Linksys WRT54G v2 router

    In a nutshell, AirPort seems to be seeing the wireless router just fine, but internet connect is a no go.  The router is a Linksys WRT54G v2, which should - SHOULD - work w/ my brand new MBP C2D 17", based on the reports I have seen in other threads here.
    In the Network Status tab of the network pref pane, the message is:  "Airport is connected to the network linksys.  Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."  This is in line with the Apple tech doc cited at the link above.
    I am starting a new thread on this because, unlike many of the other folks who are having problems connecting wirelessly, my actual wireless connection seems to be rock solid (AirPort connects to the Linksys instantly, and shows up as full strength with no apparent dropouts).  The problem seems to be with the IP address, as the MBP can't/won't pickup anything other than its self assigned IP when connecting.
    Here are the things I have tried so far (most of which are probably irrelevant as it turns out, b/c the actual wireless connection has been fine - just not the TCP/IP stuff):
    1. Updated to latest firmware in router.
    2. Tried switching to different wireless channel (ch. 11 in this case, based on reports in other threads).
    3. In Linksys settings, changed beacon interval to 50 and lowered packet thresholds as described in another post (can't find the link right now).
    4. Formatted and re-installed OSX onto the MBP.  Did NOT use Migration Assistant this time (since others were apparently having problems due to out of date prefs and PowerPC related items copied over from older machines).
    5. Updated to latest version of OSX Tiger (10.4.8 with all patches installed) using a wired Ethernet connection to the internet.
    6. Downloaded and installed the AirPort Update patch 2006-002 located at:

    7. Repeatedly trashed all AirPort-related keychain items and the SystemPreferences folder in Root/Library/Preferences.
    8. Repeatedly trashed and re-created a new wireless location using Network Assistant.
    9. Salaam thrice towards Cupertino, wave rubber chicken and bathe self in pigs' blood while humming a continuous medley of Mac startup chimes from the last two decades.
    Just kidding about #9, mostly.
    I am starting a new thread about this because I believe my issue is OS related.  The AirPort hardware seems to have a a full-strength and non-intermittent connection to the Linksys router.  The problem appears to be w/ the (in)ability of OSX to negotiate an IP lease with the Linksys box.
    I am posting this to the Linksys forum as well, but do not believe this to be a Linksys issue.  I have two other PowerPC-based Mac laptops in my office, both of which connect flawlessly to the Linksys.  (I'm typing this from one of them.)  In fact, I have torture tested my new MBP with several other wireless routers with the same result - MBP will not connect, while both of the PowerBooks work like a charm with the other routers in question.  Therefore, it surely seems to me like the common denominator here is definitely the MBP and not the router.  I realize that in the support doc at the top of this post, Apple claims it is the responsibility of the router manufacturer, but I just cannot buy that line - based on the fact that EVERY OTHER LAPTOP that I own works great with the Linksys except for my shiny new MBP.
    Beautiful machine otherwise and I really can't wait to get it working, but this is a SERIOUS pain in the you know what.
    At any rate, if anyone has any ideas as to what to try next, I would love to hear about it.  I will be calling AppleCare again first thing tomorrow morning, but it always seems the users are better informed than the Apple guys.

    if other computers connect to the router just fine , doesn't seem to me a router problem then .. the only thing i can think is to try connecting to a different network and see whether it does any good to u...can't help much if it's an OS related issue...

  • Insufficient Bandwidth Linksys WRT54G 2.2

    IChat 3.01 works fine if I connect my computer directly to my Comcast cable modem. When connected through the WRT54G I can text chat but audio chat attempts produce the dreaded "insufficient bandwidth" message. I updated the Linksys to v4.20.7. I have tried to open ports as listed in some of the other posts on this problem. I have selected Upnp enable, and Upnp disable. I have selected DHCP disable, and enable. I have reinstalled the 10.4.2 update. I have repaired permissions. In short, I have tried to utilize every fix detailed in the hundreds of messages offering fixes. Since iChat works fine without the Linksys in the mix, I am inevitably led back to the idea that somewhere I have a mistake in my Linksys setup. Has anyone got a setup guide for v4.20.7 firmware of the Linksys WRT54G that will help me step through each and every setting required to get this thing working? Or is this device just not going to ever work with iChat? Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have the WRT54G (Ver 4.0/4.20.7 firmware). I have mine configured with UPnP only which opens the following ports: 1024 to 5000 Both TCP and UDP.
    Try configuring it only with UPnP enabled(Take out all of the port forwarding and port openings, Unplug your modem, router, and mac and then plug them in in this order: Modem (then wait a minutes or two),router (then wait a few seconds), and then your mac and give that a go.
    Then try testing with a known working screen account. (My screen name is in my profile if you want to test with me)
    I've noticed the WRT54G isn't real good releasing ports from UPnP without rebooting.
    That's how I got my WRT54G working and I can now chat with both Mac and PC's.

    I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and it has worked good for a couple months and yesterday it stopped. When I plug it in all the lights are lit even though there arent any ethernet cables connected and the power light blinks constantly. I tried holding the reset button on the back and it didnt help. Anyone know whats wrong or anything I can try to fix it?

    You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
    To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
    If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
    If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
    If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
    If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
