Linksys WRT54GL and Airport Extreme dropping connections

In looking through these forums, I realize that people have had problems with their Linksys WRT54G routers and their Airport cards. There seem to be a lot of suggested fixes, but no definitive answer as to what's wrong. I don't know either, and after changing channels, changing Linksys firmware, changing encryption, creating background pings, and all of the recommended solutions, the problem persists. I wanted to document it here in the hopes that someone can figure out what's wrong. Here's a tail of /var/log/system.log during a period when the Mac was having trouble connecting to the Linksys. I don't believe that this is due to Wifi interference or the Linksys, since other machines in the house (a Mac running 10.4.8, but using a Cisco card), for example, don't have these same problems at this time.
Basically, this kind of behavior repeats for a half-hour or so, then settles down for "a while," where a while could be an hour or could be 6 hours, and then it repeats. I have no idea what the problem is, and I suspect it's a problem with the Airport Extreme, rather than with the Linksys. Ideas?

I thought I understood your Airport network would disconnect, but I don't understand what you mean by "drops ethernet". Clearly, if your wired connection stops working, so will your Airport network. Explain?
What I am saying is that I have wireless connections to the Ae and I have wired connections to it as well. Both are getting dhcp from the Ae. Both are getting dropped. In the log I am getting these entries, about once per hour...
"Jan 06 10:26:00 Severity:5 Connection accepted from ::ffff:10.0.97.190/57902.
Jan 06 10:26:01 Severity:5 unloading current configuration.

Jan 06 10:26:20 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff (reserved 3).
Jan 06 10:26:20 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key."
The 10.0.97.190 is the recently-added OS X Server. Not sure what the port is. But it seems to be doing something untoward.

  • Airport Extreme drops connection for a few seconds at a time

My airport extreme seems to drop its connection for about 5 seconds at a time and then is back up.  It does it every 10-15 minutes or so.  I am not really sure why it is doing this because it has just started happening recently and worked fine for months and months.  I need help because I dont know much about networking.

When you inserted your AirPort Extreme (It was an AirPort Extreme card, right?) card in your G5, did you attach the antenna cable AND the external "T" antenna?

  • Airport Extreme Dropping Connections

Hi, I have an AEBS, connected to a comcast "Teralyn" cable modem. I have a PowerMac Quad Core, connected to the AEBS by an ethernet cord, and we have an IBM ThinkPad and a PB15 G4 that we connect to the AEBS wirelessly.
Up until a day or so ago, everything worked great. But starting yesterday the connection to the AEBS and to the Internet from the Cable Modem drop intermittently. Seemingly no rhyme or predictability.
When I disconnect the AEBS from the cable modem, there is stability in the network. When I reset the AEBS and restart the cable modem, the problem persists. Random disconnects.
    Im running the following setup:
    - V5.7 on the AEBS
    - OSX 10.4.4
    - Airport Firmware V404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
Any help is greatly appreciated. Any ideas... I've tried a bunch and am ready to throw my AEBS out the window.
    Thanks.

Hello, I'm having kind of the same problem.
I have an airport extreme set up to connect to an adsl modem. There are 1 IMac, 3 PC running XP SP1/2. Everything works fine (Good signal strength, excellent speed, etc.) except for one pc (xp sp1 all updates with USR5416).
It randomly disconnects from the base station without apparent reason. Often, it reconnects within the 5 following secondes.
The annoying thing is when the connection application in my task bar starts flashing : connected/disconnected/connected/disconnected... it can last from 10 seconds to several minutes while it's impossible to do anything networked.
    Any idea?
The airport extreme is updated to the latest firmware, so is my USR wireless card, windows xp, etc...

  • Airport Extreme dropping connection with a Cisco 5 port Giga switch

I've connected a Cisco 5 port Giga switch SG100D-05 to one of the LAN ports of the Airport Extreme and for some reason the connection is being dropped or it fails to connect. Any idea of why this is happening and how can it be fixed?

If you have not already done so, you might want to do some basic troubleshooting to try to isolate the cause of the issue.
To do that, temporarily disconnect the switch and power it off. Connect a computer with an Ethernet port on it to the LAN port on AirPort Extreme and turn off the wireless on the computer.
Test to see you can get a good Internet connection this way.
If you can, then you know that the LAN port on the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly and your troubleshooting efforts will need to focus on testing each port on the Cisco switch.
If you cannot get a good connection with the computer connected directly to the AirPort Extreme, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working to eliminate the possibility of a bad Ethernet cable, which is the culprit more often than you might think.
Please post back on the results of your testing.

  • AirPort Extreme dropping connection to printer

Help.  AirPort Extreme disassociates/disconects from AirPrint printer(HP 7525) after ten minutes. Only way to reconnect printer is to constantly reboot AE.  After ten minutes or so it disassociates/disconnects again.

It's an RCA Digital Broadband router. All activity on it seems to be just fine, and I like I said, my internet connection never goes down...it just stops sending things to the printer.

  • Apple TV and Airport Extreme, Direct connection vs. 10/100 Switch

I have an Apple TV currently connected directly to my Airport Extreme by Ethernet, but I also need to connect my Satelite DVR to my Broadband connection. Will I suffer much if I add a 10/100 switch in my entertainment center and then run that to the Airport Extreme? Should I just run the Apple TV via wi-fi? I can't afford to buy a new switch that can do Gigabit, so I have to do the best with what I have. any suggestions?

Ethernet is efficient and assuming you have no problems you should get close to the 100Mbps, neither your tv or DVR should require any more than 5 Mbps for live streaming although each may well use up to around 15 Mbps when syncing/transfering/copying content.
I believe you should be just fine with 100 ethernet, indeed you'll probably be better than going wi-fi.

  • Airport Extreme - Dropping connection

I have an issue with my wireless network continually dropping out and then re-connecting.
I use an Aiport Extreme 802.11g and have an airport express connected to the same wireless network. I use WEP 128 bit security (occasionally a PC makes its way into the house and wants to connect) and I use MAC Address access control. The signal strength is fine.
The log shows repeated entries of the following message (the MAC address belongs to my computer).
    Jun 10 21:46:15 Severity:3 Administrative access denied to fe80::21b:63ff:feca:b682%mirror0/53771.
Anyone have any suggestions as to why this is occurring ? Thanks....

    Welcome to the Forums!
    Hmm, strange Logb entry... pondering/searching.
There've been many with this problem, and dozens of assorted cures, none that work for all, but to start...
    Change the Channel.
    Shut off IPv6.
    Shut off any 802.11n possibility.
Switch to WPA/WPA2, (btw, WEP 128 takes about 3 seconds to break now, and somebody spoofing your MAC addy would boot you off toot sweet).

  • Linksys WVC210 camera and Airport Extreme (6thgen) problems

I just picked-up a new Airport Extreme, and hooked-up an airport express and my old airport extreme both in bridge mode.  I then wanted to hook-up my Linksys WVC210 IP Camera to the network, and everything works fine for the camera except now new Airport Extreme cannot connect to my peripheral devices.  I made sure that the camera had totally different IP addresses than the bridged devices, and as long as the camera is plugged into the network, my Airport Extreme will only talk to the camera and nothing else.  Once I unplug the camera from the network, then the bridged devices will communicate again with the router.  Ugh, very frustrating, and I didn't have this problem with the Airport Extreme 5th gen.  Could be that the WVC210 isn't compatible with the new Airport Extreme.

I'm having a similar problem, my home wireless network; fine, got 4 Windows machines running fine but my Ibook and my friends too, have suddenly decided to stop working a week ago after an apple update. Now when I try to my home network, it asks my for my WEP key which I know off by heart but it tells me that an error occurred during connection to my home network and asked me would I like to try again, I have tried typing the encryption key in uppercase, lowercase, with spaces, without spaces, turning the airport extreme card on and off, but it just keeps on giving me the same error, my friends brand new Ibook Core 2 Duo 1Gb RAM downloaded the same apple update while sitting next to me and the same thing has happened to his.
Would anyone care to enlighten me to a solution because I'm not really familiar with macs so I can't think of anything else.

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

Hi..I have an AirPort Extreme base connected to my DSL Modem and has been working fine. But I recently bought another DSL modem along with the latest Airport Express. With this one however I can't get it to connect to the Internet. The light on the Express is flashing green though. Does it mean I have to re-set the settings on Airport Utility? I.e. the old settings haven't been cleared yet. Any suggestions?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.

No, not unless it is simply a network connection.
How is your IPTV being provided.. if it is using a separate vlan or separate vpi/vci in the adsl connection. Who is your ISP?
    Is the TP-Link ADSL?
Is the IPTV using a separate voice channel on adsl?
    Or a different vlan.
Sorry but it is something where a definite answer is not possible unless you provide all the details.
The setups are unique to each ISP around the world..
Here is one for our local ISP.
    http://www.avenard.org/iptv/Setup.html
He has a section on getting this working with apple router over wireless.. look
    http://www.avenard.org/iptv/IPTV_and_Wireless.html
Google around and see if other people have had success.. the whole setup is tricky.. and it is hard if nobody has used it who actually understands networking.

  • Airport Extreme dropping network connection

    Hi all,
I have had my iMac and Airport Extreme for about 6 months. Within the past month, each time my computer either hibernates or starts up after shutting down, I have to physically unplug my Airport Extreme for the Internet connection to work again. I have tried to update the software and also tried to reestablish the network connection using the Network Preferences and System Preferences yet nothing has worked so far. Any help would be great! Thanks,

I believe it has something to do with securing the network as I'm now running an unsecured network and it not only stays up but it also seems a bit faster. I even ran the Airport Utility via ethernet and got it to "almost" configure but for some reason the setting never got implemented but at least I have internet access in my entire house. I thought it might be interference with some part of the house but it is indeed due to the latest firmware update for the AEB. Which I now call AE"BS". I tried my older Airport Express but I also couldn't get it to configure to now I'm not even sure if its firmware on the AEB or the Airport Utility that is messed up. Going tethered is not an option as I don't want to hunker down in a closet! Go unsecured and it might fix a lot of the issues we are seeing.

  • Airport extreme will connect to some iPhones and iPads, but not all, and will not connect to MacBooks.

Why will the airport extreme not connect internet to macbook or some iPhones? It will connect to all our iPhone 6's and iPads but not to the MacBooks. The macbook says wi-fi has the self assigned ip address of ___,____,____,___ and will not be able to connect to the internet,

Have you done a full restart of the network in correct order?
Shut down everything.. OFF not standby.
    Power on in order.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    Router.. (Extreme??) wait 2min
Macbook.. Only the Macbook.. do restart anything else yet.
    Any luck??
No luck reset the Extreme to factory and redo the setup.. this time use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Bonus for names <10 characters.
Use passwords with the same rules.. only can be 8-20 characters.. mixed case and numbers.
    Try again with the Macbook..
No luck give explicit details of the setup of the whole network.
