Linksys WRT54GS and the 'no IP' Problem

I have a MBP that I connect to my home network via a wireless router (LS WRT54GS) When I upgraded to OS X 10.4.8 I suffered the same woes talked about here many times. I finally could get connected by ensuring that I never turned off my MBP w/o turnig AP off first. However, even that failed completely after I made the mistake of upgrading my router firmware fm 1.50.8 to 1.50.9 Simply, do not do this. It results in an inability of the MBP to get an IP address. Look at the 'Hot Support' topics on this site. There is no solution at this time for the WRT54GS if you want to use DHCP (I spent hours with a Linksys tech) I was lucky - I had a copy of the 'old' firmware (it is no longer avail fm Linksys) If this happens to you the only solution is to re-install the ver 1.50.8

  • Help protect my Linksys WRT54G from the "curl" command which bypasses my security settings

It's way too easy to break into my Linksys WRT54G router!
Do you have firmware that will fix this vulnerability?
Instantly bypassing the administrator password, my fifteen-year old
neighbor broke into my Linksys WRT54G router (firmware revision v1.0.0.6)
in ten seconds simply by sending this one "curl" command to it via the
Internet from his home next door!
    c:\> curl -d "SecurityMode=0&layout=en" http://192.168.0.1/Security.tri
This kid was kind enough to knock on my door today to tell me to fix it.
I invited him in, and from inside my own house, he showed me the Linksys
WRT54G command above which immediately disabled all my wireless security
WITHOUT him having to enter any password!
He showed me how to disable remote administration but he said the
vulnerability still exists until I get a new router. I can't believe
everyone with a Linksys WRT54G router is throwing it in the garbage.
Where/how can I find a firmware update that protects me from this curl
    vulnerability?

    To protect your router:
    * disable remote management.
    * enable WPA2 or WPA with a strong preshared key on the router.
That is essentially all you must do. This protects against the curl problem (from the outside). The benefits of the rest varies:
    * set a strong, hard to guess password on the router.
That's always a good idea to prevent some guest coming over, plugging into your network and modifying the router. For that to be relevant the person either needs physical access to your wired LAN or the WPA key.
    * disable UPnP
Good idea if you are worried you could install some malware on your computer. UPnP allows to set port forwardings for incoming connections from the internet. It allows a computer to automatically setup the forwarding to make a server accessible in the internet. You'll often need this for gaming. But it obviously can be exploited by malware.
    * access server to https instead of http
With WPA in place on the wireless this is only really necessary if you worry about someone gaining physical access to your router. https protects the password transmission to the router. But then, if someone gains physical access to my router I think the protection of my password would be the least of my problems.
    * disable wireless access to the router configuration
For this to be effective with WPA in place would require the attacker to crack WPA to get into your WLAN. WPA is considered secure at this time. Anyone cracking WPA with a strong key must have a lot of computing power and a lot of knowledge. I don't know if this setting would really prevent that attacker of gaining full access to the router. This setting may be useful if you have an occasional guest to which you grant wireless access to the internet...
    * changing the default IP address from 192.168.1.1 to something else and turning off the DHCP server on the router
With the DHCP server in place changing the IP address is no mean of protection because the DHCP server assigns a correct IP address in your LAN. You have to setup static IP addresses on all computers and devices. However, if someone gained access to your LAN (wireless or wired) all you have to do is wait and listen to the LAN traffic. It usually takes a few seconds until some noisy windows computer will broadcast a message and you have picked up the IP addresses in the LAN
Some more things often mentioned with questionable benefits:
    * turn off SSID broadcast
Supposed to make the WLAN "invisible". O.K. It does make it harder for the average Joe to check what WLANs are in the neighborhood and which channels they use to optimize the choice of channels and limit interference. It does also prevent accidental connection attempts. However, with WPA/WPA2 in place the WLAN is protected anyway. Anyone, who really wants to know if there is a network can scan with a wireless card in monitor mode. The SSID is transmitted unencrypted. Plus in average it requires more times and more power (on laptops) to connect to the network as the wireless card must actively try to connect to each configured WLAN on the computer to find out if the network is there or not. With SSID broadcast it simply scans for broadcasts and then knows the network is there...
    * wireless MAC address filtering
Supposed to limit the computers which can connect to the WLAN. Only computers with the MAC address on the list can connect. Again, this only prevents accidental connection attempts. MAC addresses are transmitted unencrypted. It is easy to pick them up with a wireless scanner. Thus, for anyone who knew how to crack WPA the MAC address filter list will be the least of problems. Most wireless cards can be configured with any MAC address you like. But the list increases the amount of effort for you to add another wireless computer to your WLAN as you always have to remember to set it up correctly...

  • Linksys WRT54GS and AX WDS with WPA

I have researched everything in these forums and I thank all for their hard work. Am I to conclude that if I want to use the AX as a bridge (WDS) that I can only use WEP encryption? I tried following the instructions with WPA and when I plug the AX back in, after the cycle time it goes green for about 5-7 seconds then starts to flash yellow. What are my options?
If I by the new Airport 802.11n will it help? I know I won't be able to access the n speed since I am only core duo and not core2 Duo but I really want to make this bridge happen on a secure network. Any other options? I am trying to provide secure internet access for my home entertainment system (Kenwood) over a wireless network since there is no RJ45 plug nearby.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone familiar if the Alchemy firmware upgrade will allow me to do this?
Is my only option to downgrade to WEP security? Client mode with WPA works fine....but I would really like WPA for the WDS.
Thank you to anyone who can help...I am trying to avoid spending$100+ for something that I may be able to do with the equipment I currently have!

  • Re: Topic: Linksys WRT54G and WDS

Hi all - this topic was in the 'User Tips' section of the forum, and I'd really like to ask the author 'Frank Canzolino' a couple of questions about certain settings for the Linksys before I proceed with trying to get the APX to work with it...
For example, it says in step 4 to copy the MAC address seen in the 'status' tab - is that the MAC address of the Linksys router or the MAC address of the computer I'm working on?
And I also have extra security measures set up that I'm concerned about - I have MAC filtering turned on, for example, as well as a trusted IP range which I'm not sure the address of '.201' would fit into. My range is basically completely occupied with 5 different machines and a Nintendo Wii - not sure where the APX would fit into the whole equation...
Any help would be appreciated - does this board have a PM or 'email user' feature? I was trying to get a hold of the original poster, but the most I can seem to do is 'subscribe' to his posts...

    The Linksys WRT54G.
...I have MAC filtering turned on...
Turn it off. MAC address filtering is not a real security feature. The MAC addresses of wirelessly connected clients are easily captured and cloned.
Any help would be appreciated - does this board have a PM or 'email user' feature?
Not sure what a "PM" is... The only way to directly contact another poster is if they have their e-mail address listed in their user information. Click on their name and you will see information on that user. It appears that Frank does not have an e-mail address listed.
If you have detailed questions, post them here and someone will probably have an answer.

  • Service module placement and the L2 adjacency problem

I'd be very interested to hear others opinions on this. You have a datacenter environment with L2 boundaries at end of row aggregators, then L3 back to the core and edge. You have 6500 service module switches hanging off the core housing ACE and FWSM modules. You want to offer firewalling and load-balancing services to servers around the datacenter.
What is the current best practice ways of resolving the L2 adjacency requirement that the firewalling and load-balancing services impose? L2TPv3? EoMPLS? Any relevant advice, deployment examples, whitepapers etc would be much appreciated!
    Thanks for any replies,
    George

    George
You could i suppose look to use L2TPv3 if your switches support it or EoMPLS but to my mind this is actually using a band aid to fix a problem that shouldn't be there.
We too struggled in our data centres with this setup but remember you only need L2 adjacency if you are running the FWSM in transparent mode or the ACE in bridged mode.
If you are then the cleanest solutions are either
    1) redesign core connections to L2
    2) deploy 6500 switches in the distribution layer. I say distribution layer because it's not clear from your description what your topology actually is but i'm assuming L2 access to distro and then L3 distro to core and the core switches are the 6500 switches.
Personally i always use the routed L3 approach where possible for fast failover and no STP and in the campus environment it works really well.
However L3 from the access-layer to the distro in the data centre is very limiting and you often come across problems such as the one you are facing.
Now again it does depend on your topology but assuming the issue is your core is L3 connected and you need L2 adjacency with your distro to offer servers i would look to deploy 6500 switches in the distro layer with the service modules in them.
If i have misunderstood please come back with more details.

  • Linksys M10 and Mountain Lion OS problems with Guest User - which router is best to upgrade to for Maverick and higher OS coming in fall?

Since we upgraded our OS to Mountain Lion the Guest User on the Linksys M10 router isn't working.  Not compatible.  Which Linksys should one upgrade to for use with Maverick OS and the newer releases coming this fall and onward?

Sorry - I have Maverick 10.9.4 and the guest user on the link sys M10 isn't compatible.  Any suggestions on which wifi router to upgrade to for newer releases of OS coming?

  • I got hacked and the 'Report a Problem' isn't working. Who can I contact about the purchase I didn't make?

There is a purchase on my iTunes account made yesterday. I DID NOT make this purchase, but the 'Report a Problem' feature is not working. I am following the directions from the Help section accurately. When I logged in though, it said I needed to change my password because of suspicious activity. Who can I contact?

    Hello,
I woke up today around 9:30 am UK Time, checked my emails on my phone and then started playing "Talking Ginger" kids game because of one of the offers, around 10:00 I noticed an email alert on top of my iphone screen about itunes receipt.
When I opened this, it was about "Kids Song Collection" purchase reciept for £1:49.
I was shocked because first of all my 3 years old daughter is sleeping, secondly I have security settings configured in iphone with a complex password to purchase and she does not know that password and thirdly I am using the phone and I know I didn't even open App Store or that app so how come this has happened.  I did a search on google about how to report and tried to follow the process through itunes but every time I click on "report a problem in itunes" this opens a new apple page in firefox "http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/"
Whilst further browsing Purchase History in itunes I also noticed another purchase from yesterday about "FireWorks Arcade" and this was unbelieveable because I didn't even receive any receipt yesterday about that purchase and again I am the only one who can make purchases due to the complex password known only to myself.
I am not sure what is going on here, but clearly as per today's incident it seems that apple is loosing their control.
Please advise what can be done here.

  • IOS 5 and the keynote remote problems.

After updating to IOS5, the keynote remote on my iPod touch (4 gen) does link with keynote on iPad 2. Can only link over wifi. The Bluetooth link worked perfectly before update. I have tried all options I can think of, such as hard restart, restore on both devices. Can someone help.

I reported the problem on itunes as scubidoobie suggested. The reply I received was not helpful at all. They recommeded consulting the Apple support page for keynote remote, which is where I started in the first place. I agree that we should all bombard Apple via itunes about this problem (see scubidoobie's reply) and get them to fix it.
I found a workaround on another posting, which is clumsy but worked for me. It may be a solution until Apple updates the remote. The idea is to use another app that can link the 2 devices by bluetooth.
    1. Get Pic transfer lite (free app) and install on both ipad and iphone (or ipod touch).
    2. Activate bluetooth on both devices.
    3. Launch keynote on one device and the remote on the other device.
    4. Launch pic transfer on both devices and follow the prompts to sync bluetooth
    5. Now double push the home button on both devices to pull up the multi-tasking bar
    6. Open keynote and keynote remote on the relevant devices.
    5. In keynote, go to settings, advanced, remote. You should now be able to link the remote - on the device running the remote, you may need to hit settings and then 'new keynote link'.

  • 4Gear and the iphone4: docking problem

iPhone 4 fits perfectly into original iPhone dock.
as long as you don't use a 4Gear case... I bought the apple universal dock this week, after reading the fitting perfectly theory... I gave away my existing universal dock with the 3G I sold, darn it...
So this morning, new universal apple dock arrives, and it again does not fit with the 4Gear case on it...
Sadly enough, the company 4Gear is not going to adapt their own docks or radio's or whatever stuff they have to fit in the phones to their own case, as it is not worth the money... That is the answer i got from a 4Gear ingeneer.
Dudes, some computer companies really p* me off...
The only way to use my phone on docks is to get it out of the case...
I do not understand that so few companies design docks with cases in mind...
The 4Gear case takes off 5mm from the plug, so it can't connect deep enough.
We now have a Bose, radio, Gear4 dock, all not working unless I take phone out of the case or use the zagg invisible shield, which does not add anything to the phone itself.
I do feel cheated though as I really like my phone in the 4gear case... Too bad the cutout in the bottom is too small for any cable but the 30 pin apple cable... It's problematic for car chargers as well, again, with the case... It's hard to choose between protection for the phone or working with devices in the house... I do not want to take out the phone out of the case every time I swap home for car or office... Darn, darn, darn...
Whoever builds a universal dock for phones with cases (is it really that hard? Come on...) will become rich over night...

I was hoping that would be the case in CT here, I called a few AT&T stores but they laughed and said there was a long line this morning, sold out in 10 minutes, and the afternoon stock is promised to the people that didn't get any this morning. I guess it's the same as with Best Buy, some areas must have gotten a lot more than others.

  • Linksys WRT54G V8 Basic Setup page problems

I have been trying to change my password and all the settings on my WRT54G V8 router today because I forgot the password, and I can't seem to navigate the Basic Setup page. I can log in (most of the time) after resetting the router, but whenever I try to click on a different tab (like "Wireless", or "Security") it comes up with the page saying "This Page Cannot Be Displayed."  I'd like to be able to put a password on it (which I have successfully done before on this router) because I live in a college dorm and would like to keep my internet from being bogged down by other people using it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Tatonka,
I assume you downloaded the WRT54G setup software disk into your PC initially. Reset the router (hold in the reset button for 30 seconds), hard wire your PC to the router, and access the Linksys icon on your desktop. Just follow the prompts after that. I had to do exactly this at my daughter's home last evening. Bob

  • HT3964 For the past several months my MacBook Pro has been shutting down. I get horrible video with marks and striations acress the laptop screen and an additional monitor and the weird video problems until the multilingual notice comes up saying to shut

I used two monitors, and several months ago the MacBook Pro started crashing frequently. It seems like it might be overheating. Sometimes the disks seems to race. I leave the computer on most of the time and it sleeps when I am away, but when I come back in the morning it will have colored striations across both screens, and soon the multilingual announcement comes up that I have to press and hold down the power key.
Also, when using a progam like Skype video, the video goes insane frequently, with Skype windows freezing, video freezing, Skype window cutting in half, and eventually the computer crashing.
It seems to be a video problem.
    What do I do?

I would take some screen shots of the anomalies and take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar.  I you cannot reproduce the display problems, the screen shots will at least give them a start point for an analysis.
    Ciao.

  • Captivate 4, interaction SWF using XML and the Reviewer tool Problem

    Hello everyone!
I am an advanced AS3er and am only months old working with Captivate 4. I've found some cool ways to use Captivate and incorporating swfs that use CSS and XML for their dynamic content builder and interactivity as well. However, I've run into a problem:
The Reviewer tool will NOT display my swf interactions that use XML, however when published as a course, I can see them perfectly fine (once I move over my css and xml folders after publishing)
Has anyone found a work around for this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Not sure if you want to control the audio used in Captivate of if you want to control you own audio form files loaded externally. If you try to control the audio associated with captivate, believe me it will be a mess. I tried it once and hit so many hurdles that I gave up. The Captivate framework is not meant at all for extending and adding functionality. I had to to create proxy classes that allowed me to gain access to internal variable but even then my control over audio streams was incomplete. Captivate completely lacks an eventing framework!
On an other subject, can you tell me how you got the swf to use the CSS and XML files? Do you have to manually copy them to a folder? Which folder?
    Thanks,
    Yves

  • 2.0.1 and the Logo screen problem

Does anyone who downloaded the update still have any issues with their phone getting stuck on the logo screen. This seems to be a large problem, and I am curious if this update fixes this issue.

I have not gotten the permanent logo screen since 2.01 (and had it and restored 5 times with 2.0), but now my wifi is permanently grayed out (even after resetting network settings in general settings and restoring yet again). So, while the phone thankfully works, it's of considerably less use to me without wifi (esp. since I have original iPhone).

A clicking problem? I have never heard nor have I ever experianced any such issue. If you could, please go into more detail.
Please note that whatever I state in these forums is not a direct response from Best Buy or Geek Squad. My posts are just my own personal insights.
