Linux & audio
Hello,
I have problem when show flash content: no sound.
I'm using:
- Mandriva 2006.0
- Firefox 1.5.0.4 / Konqueror 3.4.2
- ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller (snd-intel8x0)
- KDE 3.4.2
- kernel 2.6.12-12mdk
Installed in: ~/.mozilla/plugins and/or /usr/lib/mozilla
If anyone can help me
I don't think so. Creative's product CD installation seems to support Windows OS only.

Envy 17-3070NR Linux Audio Driver
Hi, What audio chipset is being used in the Envy 17-3070NR? Is there a Linux driver for the audio hardware device(s)? I am able to boot Ubuntu and several other recent linux distro's but none of them seem to have an integral audio driver that works with the audio chipset in this laptop. So what device is it and/or where might I find a linux driver?
FWIW I just got my envy 17t-3000 audio to work.
It turns out I have 3 audio devices (hdmi, analog-internal, and a usb) Things get wonky with all 3 loaded and as I'm not using the wirelss audio device I've put snd_usb_audio into my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and Now I can get the internal speakers to work.
Note: I still had to fiddle with the audio manager to get it working. but its working ok now. (ubuntu 11.04 + linux 3.2.3 vanilla kernel)

Linux and the Sound Blaster Live
Ive got my hands on a SB Li've 24bit external sound card and after some fiddling around I seem to only have standard stereo and no 5. Audio.
My question is has anyone got these things to output 5. on Linux yet.
I'm going to have to return it back to the distributor as I seem to be miss informed that it would work in Linux.
Im getting this feeling that most Creative stuff is not "Linux friendly" and may not recommend their wares in future,
Looks like its time to start a Linux Audio device company, 40 million users is a nice market.Hello,
Please bear with me as I'm a complete novice on this.....
I have the laptop, and whist re-decorating the room, I have?run?6 cables (sub woofer to be at the?rear of the room) to a wall mounted connector plate. So I think I need the following;
. Software to convert the sound within my laptop to 5. format (if not already done) and to get it to a USB. Installed sound card should be capable of this.
2. USB?cable from PC to ?The Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
3. The Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
4. Maybe someting else to amplify and distribute the audio
5. 6 short leads to my wall mounted connector plate
6. Speakers
Not sure if the aboe helps?and perhaps there's another way of doing it instead of using the?Sound Blaster? Li've!? 24-bit External?
Many thanks -
State of usb2 audio class compliance?
this isn't exactly archlinux specific but does anybody know the state of linux usb2 audio class compliance? I've understood that there was no audio specification for usb2 for quite some time and that made a big mess in the audio community. There is now but I wonder if it's properly implemented in linux/alsa? anybody has any experience? I have a class compliant usb2 soundcard myself, it also works in usb 1.1 luckily but you don't get all the bells and whistles with that..
Here's dmesg when I plug it in, last row is when I try to use it;
[ 2384.749399] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, device number 2
[ 2390.729825] usb 1-2: new high speed USB device number 3 using ehci_hcd
[ 2390.863654] generic-usb 0003:0926:0202.0003: hiddev0,hidraw0: USB HID v1.01 Device [Sound Devices USBPre2] on usb-0000:00:02.1-2/input3
[ 2418.388135] cannot submit syncpipe for urb 0, error -90: internal error
So it seems to be recognized properly....ngoonee wrote:

From memory, isn't alsa-devel only for development-related discussion (not bug reports)? You could just bump the thread in alsa-users, its very high traffic last I checked.
Try Linux-Audio-Users as well.
I guess, but isn't this in a sence development related? A year old thread I read about a similar issue with the same error was in alsa-devel...

Inadequate sound capture levels using Audigy 2 w/ Ubuntu Linux.
Hello, everything works fine in Windows XP. I use Audacity to do some basic multitrack recording with my guitar and Line6 POD.
However, I recently installed Ubuntu Linux (5.10) in a dual boot configuration with Windows. I cannot get decent recording levels using my typical recording method: guitar => Line6 POD preamp => Aux 2 (stereo RCA) on Audigy2 ZS Platinum breakout box => Audacity software. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the Linux audio drivers. I have found where to change the audio capture levels for the sound card (ALSA mixer), but even when I max everything out, my record levels are pathetic compared to Windows (-10 dB or more). Does anyone have suggestions?Thanks pzad! At least now I know I'm not going crazy. Still, it's disappointing to come across problems like this. It looks like I'll have to ditch Linux for audio recording purposes, at least until this issue is resolved or I get some new audio hardware.
I gathered from that bug tracker issue that you were planning to release a patch for this issue. Since the issue is still open, I take it that you haven't been able to do this yet? If it's because you don't have the hardware to test, I would be happy to help in any way I can. Just to warn you though: I am a Linux noob. -
Getting HDMI audio working (ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mATX)
Hey everyone. So I'm trying to create a HTPC using this ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mATX motherboard with a 3.0 GHz E8400 Core 2 Duo and 4GB RAM. I've installed Arch 64-bit on it and have full 1080p video showing nicely on my HD TV with Gnome set up quite nicely. I've gone through the Wiki for the documentation for getting ALSA working but I cannot get any audio working. I have 3 outputs on this board, the line-out on the back, the headphones on the front and the HDMI audio on the back.
I admit I am an ALSA/Linux Audio newb but it seems like everything is set up properly comparing it to the Wiki document. I get very faint audio from the headphones but nothing else. I'd really like to get the HDMI audio working but I am completely and totally lost as to what to do. I don't even know what devices and modules I should be looking for. I'm pretty sure the sound chipset is Intel HDA Audio. Although, under Vista it comes back as Realtek audio controller.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!While searching for the solution myself I stumbled over this rather old thread and having found the solution it might be interesting for someone out there :-)
HDMI audio is working fine with the Asus P5E-V, the problem is that the IEC958 device has to be unmuted on the command line (since it is not showing in any mixer):
(1)amixer --card 0 |grep 958
Then unmute the devices (in my case to unmute "'IEC958',1" was sufficient):
(2)amixer --card 0 sset 'IEC958',0 unmute
(3)amixer --card 0 sset 'IEC958',1 unmute
(4)amixer --card 0 sset 'IEC958 Default PCM',0 unmute -
IS "javasound://44100" a live audio source?
I'm trying, without success to use the AVReceive/AVTransmit tools to test sending audio between two linux boxes. I want to send microphone input audio to another machine. Is "javasound://44100" a live source? There is another JMF example that involves ising JMStudio which I was confused by.
The AVreceive script simple sits and repeats
Waiting for RTP data to arrive...
Hwoever, if I tcpdump the sending server, there is no traffic at all on the ports I specify for RTP. Is the Blackdown JDk/JMF capable of transmitting linux audio?Hi,
U may haave to run jmfinit first to update your jmf.properties file. This file plays an important role in letting JMF applications access your audio devices. I am not quite sure how all this goes about but, I learned it the hard way.
Also, After use the latest RTPManager in JMF 2.1.1 instead of the SessionManager in JMF 2.1 to create the "Session watcher". THen create your sendStream using RTPManager.createSendStream() and finally start your processor with processor.start() to start sending out audio data.
Kind Regards,

Can't play MIDI the same time as any other sound.
Hello there.
I am a bass player and therefore I use GTick from [extra] as a metronome and TuxGuitar from [community] as GuitarPro tablature reader. I have a problem with (at least) this two programs: when I try to start the metronome or to play a tablature, I get error messages if any sound is playing, no matter if it is Amarok playing music, or TuxGuitar playing a tablature.
For non-musicians, a GuitarPro tablature is a transcription of a song which can be played through MIDI at the same time as you can see the partiture, or the notes played on an image of a guitar neck or a keyboard.
This happens every time I want to play some MIDI from this two apps: if I have a tablature open with TuxGuitar I can't play another tablature on another instance of TuxGuitar, or even start GTick to play alone with the metronome. I have to close TuxGuitar and start GTick, or open the other tablature in the same instance of TuxGuitar, which is annoying when, for example, trying to compare two tablatures of the same song.
This makes me think that my system can't play any MIDI when some other sound is playing, but I don't know any other MIDI apps to try. Any ideas on how to setup multiple MIDI playing? I've read on the Wiki [1] that it was necessary to enable dmix some time ago to allow multiple programs play sound at once, but this is not necessary since ALSA 1.0.9rc2, and I have alsa-lib 1.0.17a-1.
Thank you in advance.
Bye!

It means, "do some horrendously geeky stuff which only a very small proportion of the population have the knowledge, competence, ability and free time to do for no pay."
You're looking for an easy solution. There is no easy solution.
It's the app that says "ALSA-compatible", and it's the app that I'm criticizing for that statement. Not you.
Welcome to the ridiculous world of Linux audio - see jungle and my recommendation. This is what free software produces - an unholy mess of conflicting, contradicting and overlapping standards.

Can't export song files in Hydrogen drum program
Well; I'm having audio problems again,
so today I added my user into the audio group with:
su
usermod -a -G audio wordstrings
which eliminates the "permission denied issue"
Then went:

and then the audio wouldn't work in Hydrogen...
Now; the previous time I opened Hydrogen, the audio did work, but I made a quick drum track and tried to export it and in the process of doing so, (made it to where the audio stopped working?)
How can I get audio back and export song files?
Thanks in advance for any tips!
Last edited by customscrollbar (2014-01-15 16:50:55)Are you starting jackd in realtime mode? If not, maybe that's what causes Hydrogen zombification. You could try to start jack manually beforehand, for example via qjackctl.
I can offer what works for me, maybe you want to try to replicate my setup.
I'm using hydrogen 0.9.5.1-4 and jack2 1.9.9.5-4. I start jackd via qjackctl 0.3.11-1 with the following setup:
Generated command line:
/usr/bin/jackd -P80 -p128 -t4000 -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p256 -n2 -Xseq
I'm not using a realtime kernel, just stock Arch Linux, right now linux 3.12.7-1 (haven't updated yet to 3.12.7-2).
Aside from all that, you can get great help for Linux audio issues at linuxmusicians.com, lots of knowledgable folks there.

VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS! Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760. During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs. But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse! If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell. This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.
Here's the #lspci -vv of the system:

[SOLVED] Disabling "dry" signal (ALSA or JACK)
I'm using VirtualBox to run FL Studio in a virtual Windows box. The problem (ok, not so much of a problem, but an annoyance) is, that I can't seem to find a way to disable the "dry" microphone signal. Probably you don't understand what I mean, so I'll give an example: when using a vocoder type effect, you can still hear the original, unaltered voice "under" the übercool Kraftwerk robot voice, and that is just lame. Still trying to make it clearer: what I'm trying to achieve is the microphone not going straight to the speakers. So, are there any Linux audio gurus out there who can help me?
P.S. Yes, it's a Linux problem, not Windows or VirtualBox one, since I can hear the voice even when VB isn't running.

Surround sound in ALSA in KDE and dmix, a working case
After two days of searching the web, reading manuals, typing and constant rebooting, I ended up with a configuration for ALSA that works fine 95% of the time. Right now I am listening to 5.1 surround sound (through upmixing) from any app I want (flash not installed, so not tested). I am writing it here 'cause I didn't find this answer to any other forum and the solution on Archwiki didn't work, so it might help a lot of people. The following .asoundrc is a slightly modified version of a .asoundrc file that could be found on alsa.opensrc.org before it went down (found it on wayback machine). Here it is:
pcm.card0 {
type hw
card 0 #change this to our device
device 0 #change this to our device
# mmap_emulation true
pcm.dmix0 {
type dmix
ipc_key 34521
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0" #change this to your device
channels 6
pcm.dsnoop0 {
type dsnoop
ipc_key 34523
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0" #change this to your device
pcm.asym0 {
type asym
playback.pcm "dmix0"
capture.pcm "dsnoop0"
pcm.pasym0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "asym0"
# 'dsp0' is espected by OSS emulation etc.
pcm.dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "asym0"
ctl.dsp0 {
type hw
card 0 #change this to our device
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "asym0"
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0 #change this to your device
pcm.upmix51 {
type upmix
slave.pcm "asym0"
delay 15
channels 6
pcm.!default "plug:upmix51"
This will allow for both input and output mixing, togther with 5.1 sound. I think it can be summarized to 5 or 6 lines but my brain is too bloated with all the linux audio crap right now to even think about it..
In some cases, in KDE, when some phonon based apps like Bangarang or Amarok are the first ones to produce sound after boot, then the sound device is locked and no other app will be able to access it and play anything. If I exit the app, play sth else, eg speakertest -c 6, then everything works fine and I can have any app produce sound (even Amarok and Bangarang). In these wicked circumstances, I noticed that KDE notifies me of some sound devices not working and falling back to some other ones (that do not necessarily have a different name). Also the login sound doesn't play and maybe it is due to this that the notification appears. In any case, after rebooting the whole thing (usually) doesn't repeat.
Another thing with ALSA that mixed things more is that, in case you have a usb webcam plugged in, sometimes its microphone becomes the default device and the above .asoundrc will stop working. To prevent this simply change the order the devices are loaded by putting the following in a file under /etc/modprobe.d:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-card-1 snd_usb_audio
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-card-1 index=1
options snd_usb_audio index=1
(found here http://ramblings.narrabilis.com/alsa-no … boot-time). The aliases are probably not needed.
I am curious to see if this works for anyone else. Also, I don't know how to use alsa-equal with this .asoundrc, so any advice is welcome. (By the way, I never got alsa-equal to work with Amarok).
Last edited by tterranigma (2012-04-12 00:18:59)Correct about samplerate_best.
Yes, but is there another app that has audio open?
Well, yes and no.. In KDE running fuser (and lsof) shows "kde4" and "kmix", but I doubt these are actually using the device, because, even with software mixing disabled, they are still listed, yet I can still play surround sound with speakertest.
Also, in KDE, I diabled/enabled (on the fly) samplerate_best several times while trying things, without restarting KDE and the results where mixed. The same with your .asoundrc and other configurations. As a conclusion, while in KDE ALWAYS restart it to be sure that the new .asoundrc is used (fastest way ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X).
A question:
Generally, in linux, everything uses ALSA (ok, also OSS) to produce sound. So .asoundrc is always in effect no matter what app we are using, right? However, before even enabling surround sound, with alsaequal installed as the deffault device (as te wiki suggests), the equalizer was used only by apps talking directly to ALSA (eg VLC, speakertest) and was ignored by phonon apps. Any explanation? On the contrary, VLC seems to ignore .asoundrc as far as surround sound and samplrate_best are concerned. What is happening?
In any case, how could I change .asoundrc to make use of alsaequal as the default, together with 5.1 sound and dmixing? -
The more I read on digital stereo the further down a rat hole I seem to go. What's a recommendation for doing simple digital audio output, how to output the digital flac, mp3 to some hardware that will attach to speakers? Either my home stereo or some hopefully cheap hardware. I've got a Zotac that I'd like to start out with to do proof of concept. It has spdif out.
Don> I don't know what a Zotac is,
Sorry the Zotac mention was a last minute thing, it's a little micro PC.
> ... but have you read the wiki on sounds system? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sound
I'll read through that. I've been through so many linux audio pages on and off over 6 months I'm not sure where I am. I figured I'd devote time this winter to getting something set up.
> Beyond that... Really gonna depend on how you are planning to interact with it, is it headless? What kind of display are you expecting? But so far we basically know that you want to play audio over hardware... What kind of answer are you expecting?
I was thinking I'd put as small a monitor as I can find in my stereo cabinet to run either a linux audio app like banshee or something web/perl home grown. What I'm looking for is the middle hardware/software, what do I need to run on the linux box to output the digital stream and what do I need to either hook it directly to something that will drive speakers or to my home stereo. It's that middle ground that I can't seem to figure out. -
Hello,
When I'm watching video clips in the playlist, and the video changes, there are some loud "click" noise. It happens all time and are driving me nuts.
What is causing this, and how do I avoid it ??
Sometimes it helps changing the volume, but not allways.I think the cause is:
This is due to the device being closed and reopened on track change.
Some soundcards make a click noise, some don't.
