Linux beginner at Mac.

Hi guys. I need to learn basics of linux. I get a macbook pro with OS 10.9 to do it. How should I do it? Any suggestions for a beginner?
Many thanks.

While there are some similarities and a common ancestry, OS X is NOT a version of Linux.
Some versions of Linux will run under Boot Camp, Apple's method for running other operating systems on the Intel hardware platforms.
Others (and there is some crossover here) may run under various virtualization applications, such as Parallels or Fusion. Under these, your Linux distribution would run on top of the Mac OS inside an application. I have Parallels on my iMac and it runs fine with serveral different distributions, fails miserably under several others.
If you get either product, be sure that the version you purchase is compatible with Mavericks. I had to upgrade my Parallels installation for it to work.
Best of luck.

  • Linux installation in mac

    Dear friends,
I have a mac book with 10.5 leopard. I need to install debian linux in my mac machine; is it possible to install linux in mac HDD. If it possilble, please guide me with necessary steps for installation of linux
    Thanks in Advance

    nasif,
I too occasionally need to access different operating systems while actually getting work done on my Mac. While managing web sites, I need to see what Internet Exploder is doing to our web pages so need to run that. I also need to see what at least some Linux users are seeing when browsing our site.
The solution I came up with was to install and run several virtual machines. There are several options when setting up a virtual machine. The least expensive (as in free) is Virtual Box from Sun. I found that this worked for my minimal needs but probably would not for extensive heavy lifting. One commercial program is Parallels. Another is VMware. I'm sure there are more. Look these up and see what meets your needs.
Mac OS has its own Boot Camp and I've heard that it runs Windoze okay. It was not my choice. I don't know if it will run Linux.
Basically, you install the virtualization program like any other program and then run it to create an environment and install an OS. Naturally, it would need to be one that runs on Intel rather than AMD.
I'm running a couple versions of Windoze, Fedora 8 (poorly) and possibly Ubuntu. I have a cheap Linux box for doing more with Linux.
That's the Mac side. For Linux details, you've already gotten some other suggestions, I've found that linuxquestions.org is also a good place for information.
Still, I get all my real work done on my Macs.
    Best wishes.

  • Linux copy the Mac Dock to make it looks like MAC! But what's Apple doing?

When I'm disappointed at PCs, it's not only because of Microsoft's Windows, but also millions of so-called different PCs only with the same Windows system inside. So I wanna to look for a new computer with unique features, I think Mac is the best choice I can never find. But now I'm annoyed that Linux are copying Mac from Mac Dock, and using some themes to make Linux look like a 'real' Mac!? Then what's Apple doing about it? Just standing by and making Linux themselves? Apple does not mind about it? Mac Dock isn't Apple's? If Linux are all with MAC OS X copying-features, then what's MAC OS X? Who will know, when millions of computer with a Mac Dock Linux, who will remenber that the DOCK is apple's? Maybe people will think: MAC OS X? just a Linux-outlook system! OH~GOD!! At that time what's the difference between MAC and Linux? And what's the difference between MAC and PC? Millions of computers with the same outlooking system as MAC? OH~NO!! I wanna Apple to give me a full answer about this!!

If you are really worried about the looks of things like the dock being in linux vs mac, there is no type of Computing device that can save you.
Apple may have patents and trademarks, but even if someone made a window manager that cloned os x's gui completely, it would not have the underlying power that goes with it. Linux is similar to Darwin, but osx's implementation of a gui is nearly flawless in my opinion. I am a linux admin by trade. I used to run linux desktops. i struggled for years to find a gui that worked well on linux, because I needed the power that goes with it from the command line / mem usage etc. Then enter my first mac purchase with a macbook pro I bought on the whim last year. Wait.. can it be true? A powerfully flexible freebsdish system (darwin) underneath a gui that is fast, efficient, and actually works?! Plus hardware that knock on wood in my luck rarely goes bad, plus rarely crashes unless it's a third party tool? Gasp and egads.
That is why Apple does not have to worry. I love linux. I love os X. Linux is making breakthroughs with desktop goals, but until they redo Xorg to not be the suck it can be, I will stick with my os X. As will most of the other linux / bsd geeks in my office who are mac converts (bout 6 of us overall, theres only roughly 10 admins besides myself that are technical).
It's not that they don't care. It's that for intents and purposes, it doesn't need to.

  • Need my files on a damaged linux partition from Mac OS X

    Hi everybody !
Just got my new MacBook Pro 15 inches today and it is absolutely great. I have problems transferring my documents from linux to my mac. I tried ext2fsx, but I have a critical error. I guess this is the same as for windows, meaning that it was badly unmounted under linux due to a brutal shut down. I cannot repair the linux partition because my other computer is really dead. Any idea how to fix this under mac os x ?
    Thanks in advance,
    D

I did not suggest this because I was uncertain if Apple had changed fsck to work only with HFS file systems. If it works with other unix file systems that would be an nice easy way to check the disk out.

  • Redirect Linux (X11) on Mac

    All,
Is there anyway that I could
    1. Click an icon and to have a Linux login screen? So that I could remotely run Linux application on Mac.
    2. Redirect Linux terminal to Mac, so that I could run the application from console.
    Thanks

To get a double-clickable Linux shell, do the following:
On the Mac, in your .bash_profile (or whatever you use), set DISPLAY to .0
Open Terminal, and choose File > New Command...
    Enter "ssh -Y -l yourlinuxid my.linux.server.com"
This should open a session to your linux box.
"ssh -X" might not work. If you have trouble, use "ssh -Y". Ask in the Unix forum here for an explanation of the differences.
    Choose Terminal > Window Settings...
Go through the panels and customize the settings you want to use for Linux sessions.
    Choose File > Save As...
The file you save is a double-clickable document that will open an ssh session.
Be sure that X11 is running on your Mac before opening a linux session. X windows will be directed to your Mac.

  • Printing from linux machine to Mac shared printer?

I have a brand new Brother MFC 6800 that is connected to my Mac (10.4.4) via USB. I have a Linux box at home (Mandriva 2006), and I'd like to be able to print through the network to this printer.
I've been searching the web for instructions for how to set up CUPS and/or SMB to allow me to print this way, but have only come up with a few tangential references. Almost everything I've found is how to print from a Mac to a Linux print server. I want to do the opposite.
I'm handy enough with Un*x to edit config files, but not handy enough to know what to put in there. I'd appreciate anyone who can point me to a site that might show me how to do it.
    Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Chris,
I've not done this with a Mac but CUPS is CUPS. Open the /etc/cups/client.conf file on your Linux machine and change the ServerName line to point to your Mac. That may be all you have to do because the Mac's CUPS automatically adds the local printer for you. You may have to define a queue for it; I'm not sure but I don't think so. Also, you will probably have to authorize it on the Mac. The /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file on the Mac should have a line in it that look like:
    Listen <Mac_IP>:631
where <Mac_IP> should be replaced by the IP address of your Mac, (not 127.0.0.1) and similarly for <Linux_IP> below. Such a line should already exist for 127.0.0.1. Just copy-and-paste in a new copy of this line and change the IP address. Inside the definition of root directory you similarly may need to add an "Allow From" statement:
    <Location />
       Allow From <Linux_IP>
    </Location>
The directory definitions are modeled on similar definitions in Apache's httpd.conf file. There may be more that is necessary; I'll see if I can find more specific information that I've saved. If you have to do more, please post it to this thread so that there is complete documentation for others. Of course a consistent configuration depends on having static IP addresses on your local network.
I'm not really surprised that you didn't find much if you searched for strings including Mac or Apple; this is a purely UNIX question. The CUPS administration documentation can be found online at cups.org or even on your own machine at http://localhost:631/ or on your drive in the /usr/share/doc/cups directory.

  • Can't connect from Linux machine to Mac

    Hello,
Having trouble connecting from a linux machine (Fedora Core 4) to my mac. I see the mac in the "Network" dialog box ("Places->Connect to Server" on Gnome). When i try to connect to it, i get the authentication required dialog, put my info in, but no dice.
    Any ideas?

Very strange. When do you get the permission denied message? Do you get the prompt to enter a password?
Are both users admins? There may be some restrictions for non admin users.
My guess is that either you don't enter the right username or password or IP (but I guess you triple verified that a million times already?), or that you already have modified some configuration of the Mac. ssh should work out of the box, after you enable it, but there are ways to invalidate it.
    If you do
    <pre>
    ls -al /usr/bin/ssh
    </pre>
    what do you get?
    </pre>

  • Arch Linux on Intel Macs?

Are there any plans to make Arch Linux run on the new Intel based Macs?

BTW, talking to an Apple salesman over the weekend. Apparently the new iMacs will run Windows Vista too! Unlike previous Macs, they are not using a proprietary Apple BIOS setup, but something more general purpose that is compatible with Vista too. Apple doesn't want you running MacOS on your PC, but they don't seem to mind you running Windows on your Mac. Lets them get into the booming PC hardware business! The salesman assured me that most Linux distros would be able to run on the machines.
I played around with them, and despite having on 2 GHz chips (but two of them, of course) the iMacs were very responsive. I can only guess that MacOS is lighter than Windows, and hence faster subjectively on these "slower" processors.

  • [SOLVED] Is rEFIt necessary to boot Linux on a Mac?

    Hi,
do I have to use rEFIt to boot Linux on my MacBook, or can I just use Bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    MrAllan
EDIT: In the end, I installed rEFIt, then Linux, and finally uninstalled rEFIt and am now succesfully dual-booting between Linux and Mac OS X using Bootcamp.

I don't think bootcamp recognizes linux partitions.  Don't know.  It's been a long time since I used it, since then.  There was talk of people using lilo tough.  The thing is the bootloader has to be able able to run from the firmware (bios for pc and Openfirmware for apple's).

If you were asking this on 10.6 Snow Leopard I could lay it out for you,  but 10.7 that comes with a new machine makes it even more difficult to dual boot Linux and the rEFIt program required to do so hasn't been updated in two years.
It's best to run Linux on it's own hardware now and if your going to run Backtrack you should have the computer competence not to ask such newbie questions. If you did have the skills you would want Backtrack on it's own cheap disposable hardware anyway.
Apple is locking down it's machines, turning OS X into iOS X, the walled garden approach to computing, this makes Mac's unsuitable for running other operating systems like Linux or even most Windows.
If you want a Mac, get a Mac. Then get a Linux PC for Linux.

  • Installation of Linux @Parallels on Mac OS X 10.5

    Hi,
i want to install an Oracle Server Standard Edition (at least 10gR1) on Mac OS X 10.5.
Because of no certification on that platform my idea is to install the Parallels VM on the Mac and as guest OS a Linux.
Parallels supports among others the following guest OS Linux: SUSE, Red Hat, Debian.
What Linux would you recommend? It should be very easy to install and administrate because i'm a Linux novice ;-)
    Best regards,
    Martin

    Hi,
You can also use Oracle Enterprise Linux, and you can download it for free from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux.
BTW, if you want to use RHEL5.1, at least 10gR2 is recommended.

  • Linux: problem booting mac os. please help me

    hi all,
    i've a macbook pro 17''
i had to try a linux program for pano in 3d. i decided to try the live cd of ubuntu.
the live cd seems not functioning (no matter) but now i cant restart my macbook?
the only operatione i made before testinf the live cd was to change the boot from hard disk to the cd?
what can i do? i cant start my mac os x...
    please help!!!!

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select your OS X volume and click on the down arrow button that appears. The computer should start up in OS X. Eject the CD from the optical drive. Open Startup Disk preference and select the OS X volume for the startup, then click on the Restart button. This should return your system to OS X startup.
In the future you do not need to change the startup volume using Startup Disk in order to boot from a CD or DVD. Simply insert the disc in the optical drive then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.
