Hello,
Is there a database from oracle that is compatible with any flavor of linux ? is there a free download of the same, in conformity with the linux tradition ?
Also, is there a developer 2000 program that runs on Linux ? can any one help please ....

32 Bit Installation or Oracle Linux and Oracle Database 10g
I have an old E-Machine that I wanted to put Oracle Linux and Oracle Database Express 11G on. I was just wanting to do some testing and development on the system. I'm pretty sure the machine is 32bit.
I just burned a copy of 32 bit Oracle Linux onto a CD. Is there a version of Oracle Database Express that will run on it?
It seems like there is only a 64 bit version of Oracle Express Database 11g. Is Oracle Database Express 10g installable on Oracle Linux 32 bit?
Let me know! Thanks in an advance. One (or two) caveats with the 10g version, XE can not be patched and the 10.2.0.1 XEs were created before the current daylight savings time rules went into effect.
If you have access to My Oracle Support there is a method to get updated timezone files for the oracle binaries, you need at least version 4 of the DST files. I've got the MOS docIDs somewhere let us know if needed and I'll dig 'em up. -
High I/O wait observed in Linux based Oracle Database Server
Hi,
We have just migrated Oracle Database from Solaris Server to Linux VM [ESX] server.
We have observed that there is high I/O wait issues while database query is running on Linux VM, which was ideally zero in case of Solaris. The same Database was running with no i/o wait on solaris physical server.
In the same ref.I would like to below points.
- Recommendations for running Oracle on VM based Linux.
- Recommendations from ESX Host side
Please suggest.user558914 wrote:

The same Database was running with no i/o wait on solaris physical server. What did you expect? A virtualised I/O subsystem to respond and perform like a real one?
That would a very unrealistic expectation. And as comparisons go, as sensible as comparing the taste of an apple with the odour of the colour blue.
Forget about comparisons. Only marketing, sales and the idiot believe the cr@p that introducing several s/w layers between the the target (e.g. sector on spinning rust) and the destination (e.g. Oracle) makea the path between target and destination, faster.
To optimise the virtualised target, you need to make the path as short as possible. If your virtual disk is for example a file on a cooked file system on the host, then you are introducing the host's complete I/O layer for accessing that virtual drive. If your virtual disk is an actual (raw) partition or drive on the host, then path is faster - passing through the host kernel as direct I/O and bypassing the host's cache and file system drivers.
I suggest that when you setup your virtualised environment, you do proper stress testing of the various configurations of a virtualised I/O subsystem, using something like fio. -
Compatible Oracle Database ---for Nw2004 and Nw2004s
I want to install Nw2004 system and then upgrade teh system to NW2004s for a POC.
Please let me know the compatible oracle version as database
Regards
BalajiHello,
I recommend you to take a look at the "Product Availability Matrix":
http://service.ap.com/pam
It will give you the most current information.
For example, NW2004s has kernel 700 and it only supports <b>Oracle 10g</b> ( that means that the information from Ben is <u>not totally correct</u> )
NW2004 supports <b>Oracle 10g and 9i</b>

Oracle Database XE Client(winXP) vs Oracle Database XE (linux)
hi everybody there, thanks for having some time for reading me.
i have a linux with Oracle Database XE, under linux with database user 'hr' i can make queries and create applications, that is ok.
also, i've installed Oracle Database XE Client on windows xp machine, and i'am usin this option: Run SQL Command Line, this prompts me to enter user and password, and i am entering this:
connect hr/[email protected]:1521
after a few seconds, i get this error: ORA-12560: TNS:Protocol Adapter Error.
192.168.0.102 is the IP address from my linux database, 1521 is the default port (i am using this port).
is this client looking for file tnsnames.ora? what else do i need on client (or server), to connect to my linux database?
my final aim is to connect from Developer 9i (winxp) to my linux database (in fact, i have the same error of above, trying this), only that i am trying first just to connect from Client XE to my linux, and when i get success with this, i will continue trying with Developer 9i.
if someone can guide me with this, it would be great. i am becoming crazy.
thanks.hi, thanks friend.
look, as i also installed Developer 9i, i have a directory where i put a tnsnames.ora file, this directory is: d:/OraDev9i/network/admin
i don't know if Client XE, looks for this directory?, if i would not have installed Dev 9i, where can i put this tnsnames.ora file for Client XE to read it?
well, let's asume Client XE looks for directory above, this is my tnsnames entry, pls check it:
XE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = XE)
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = PLSExtProc)
(PRESENTATION = RO)
i don't know if there is something wrong with this, please help me.
i did what you told me:
connect hr/francis2010@XE
and i got this:
ORA-12154 TNS: Could not resolve service name
also, i tried changing 'localhost.localdomain' to my linux IP address: 192.168.0.102, and i get the same error message. how do i know where Client XE is reading my tnsnames?
about the listener, i checked with this: sudo /.../init.d/... status, and it seems it is ok, remember i can work well in linux wiht hr, the port is ok, and i also checked with lsnrctl status, and i got LISTEN, so it seems is ok.
sorry, and thank you for your support, maybe this is easy but as i know the basics, i am lost. -
Problem with httpd and oracle database
hi
i have oracle linux with oracle database 11gR2
i install php with oci as the following link :
http://oss.oracle.com/projects/php/dist/documentation/installation.html
but when i try phpinfo() i found just only
*" /etc/php.d/oci8.ini"* in the result
and when i test connection i have this error
*" Fatal error: Call to undefined function oci_connect() "*
so what is the best way to install oci on oracle linux ?What version of the OS are you using? Any clues in the syslog and httpd log? Are you using SELinux, which is often an overlooked issue?
Can you provide more details?
so what is the best way to install oci on oracle linux ?According to the instructions, if support is needed: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/php/zend-server-096314.html -

Linux,tuxedo,oracle ,HP ux, RM entry
hello all,
I am new to tuxedo and i run my tuxedo application in linux.I have oracle client
in linux and oracle databases running in HP unix .so which RM entry do i have
to make for building my TMS ---the RM entry for linux or the RM entry for HP Unix(
i mean where the database server is running?)
some one please help.If RM entry is for linux ,any place i can get it?
thanks in advance,
adiThanks peter,
that cleared my basic doubt. However very little is known of linux rm entry.i would
encourage someone to post on that ,still.
Peter Holditch <[email protected]> wrote:
adi,
The RM file entry tells buildserver which database libraries it needs
to
link with your
server code to give xa access to the database.
Therefore, if your Tuxedo server (including the TMS, which is just
another Tuxedo server) will be running on Linux, you want the Linux RM
entry because the Tuxedo server will be a Linux executable, linked with
Linux libraries.
If the database libraries are actually communicating with a different
box where the database instance executes
at run-time, that's handled by the implementation of the databse
libraries, not by Tuxedo,
so it is transparent from the perspective of coding and building all
Tuxedo server executables.
I hope that helps,
Regards,
Peter.

Can't mount oracle database on linux system
This is same as previous posting just added
e-mail and username info fo forum posting.
I am not able to mount an Oracle database.
I am new to Oracle and am working on an Oracle8i installation on an
Intel Linux Suse 6.3 platform. I am using only one harddrive and am
not using the 4 mount points as mentioned for efficiecy purposes in
the Oracle documentation..I am using the installation cd from Oracle8i
for Linux Starter Kit by Oracle Press. If anyone has this book they
can refer to pages 41-44 for the examples I followed.
As sysdba in sqplplus using the STARTUP command I can not Mount the
database -step 2 of the 3 stage process (Start, Mount and Open the
database) of opening an Oracle database.
I show the errors I encountered when I did the first 2 of the 3 steps
in the step-by-step mode (STARTUP NOMOUNT pfile=, ALTER DATABASE
MOUNT) in the sqlplus session and alert log respectively with startup
nomount and alter database mount for this sqlplus session.
Additionally I show the init.ora file lines referring to control file
which seem to be referred to by the sqlplus error messages and the
alert.log file. Perhaps some can give me some advice as what I can try
to fix this problem.
At the end of this e-mail I added several questions I had in regard to the control
files. Any help is appreciated.
Well, here are the sqlplus session results and its alert.log file:

I need to know several points:
1) What are control files susposed to

I used the

This resulted in about a dozen such files in
different directories as shown below:

2) On page 100 in the book Oracle 8i A Beginners's
by Oracle Press mention is made of a
CREATE CONTROLFILE command that can under
circumstances be used to re-create a control-file.
but that is all that is said about it. Perhaps
you might know something more about it.
3) Would you recommend any good text for
Oracle DBA's, especially for the problem of the sort
that I am encountering?
[email protected]
nullIt's probably not supported on RHEL5/Centos5/etc., but...
You can get the installer to function using the following steps:
- extract the cal_linux_*.tar.gz, and cd into the OracleCalendar_inst directory
In there is the actual installer, cal_linux.
- the cal_linux is shell script wrapped around some binary blobs. The installer's
problem is that Oracle is setting the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 environment
variable, which is a mistake on RHEL5. You need to make it not set that variable,
but you need to do so in a way that the size of the shell script does not change at all,
and none of the binary blobs are impacted.
- the approach I took was
mv cal_linux cal_linux.BAK
sed -e 's/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL= /g' < cal_linux.BAK > cal_linux
chmod a+rx cal_linux
cal_linux -i gui
Note: you must have exactly 5 spaces in the substitution part of the sed command, because you're replacing 5 characters (2.2.5), and the size of the shell script must not change.
If you do that, the installer should run (one warning from awk still) and you should be able to install the product.

Need Advice on Oracle database 10.2.0.4.0 on RedHat Linux AS 4
Hi,
I would like to know whether Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.0 is certified to run on the RedHat Linux AS 4 (Nahant Update 6) with HugeMem Kernel?
actually, we were running the Oracle 10g(10.2.0.4.0) database on RedHat Linux AS 4 (Nahant Update 6) with SMP kernel. We faced "out of memory" error so we are planning to change the kernel to HugeMem from SMP.
Any suggestions on this would be highly appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance!!!
SivaIf you were facing the out of memory errors, could you elaborate more on the circumstances these errors showed up? You could be facing the same situation after upgrading the OS if you don't properly diagnose the root cause.

Oracle Database Export - 8.1.7.4 on linux
Hello All,
With reference to the below Link.
Oracle Upgrade 8.1.7.4 to 10g in Red hat linux
I am trying to export the oracle database (8.1.7.4) in our landscape using the installation master - system copy. But I am not able to export the database due to the options like (database version 920 and 102) and due to this not able to export the 817 database. But In the sap press books guide they clearly mentioned that its possible to export the database of oracle 817 database. So, I believe I am using the wrong isntallation master.
If anyone having idea about exporting the 817 oracle database, please let me know
Enviornment : 8.1.7.4 database with linux2.4 and SAP R/34.7
Kind Regards
VIjayHello Markus,
Thanks for your reply.
