Linux distribution for Java?

Does anyone know where I can find a Linux distribution that is packaged solely to run Java? I.e., with all the bells and whistles removed such as text editors, web browsers, etc. but without missing libraries and dependent files. Something that doesn't need to be configured too much after installation.

You mean a "Java-only" set of a Linux-OS based system? Well, if you know Linux really well, you can try your hand a minimal Debian or Slackware install, but you'll still get more than you think you want. Or you can try one of the more "commercial" variants and keep trying to pare it down to the size you think you want. But I'll be you a nickle (US 5 cents) that you'll crash the computer because you eliminated something that is needed.
If you don't know Linux really, really well - you are Out Of Luck. I guarantee you'd remove something that'll cause a crash. OS's are complex things and not for the faint of heart. (I gave up kernel hacking around 1.2)

  • Best Linux Distribution for WebLogic 8.1

    Which Linux distribution is best for running Weblogic 8.1 on. We are thinking about SuSe?

    In terms of supported configurations, you're basically down to Red Hat Enterprise or SUSE Enterprise. If you want to run JRockit, both of those platforms are also officially supported. I don't have a direct comparison to share about running WLS on both OS's, but I'd probably go with SUSE as well. Of course, it shouldn't be too much trouble to set up one of each for evaluation running in your environment with your apps...

  • Linux distributions supported on Oracle 8i and 9i

    Hello,
    Can you please provide me with the web page which compiles certification information on Linux distributions for 8i and 9i, I cannot seem to find a page which does such a compilation.
    Also, this is to the responder - do you work for Oracle?
    Thanks in advance.

    Yeah I saw that but...
    Which version of Oracle can I install?
    I have RH 9.0 basic version ($30.00 from best buy).
    I am interested in learning Oracle with Linux for my own personal use at home.
    ie
    I used to have Oracle Personal 8i on my Windows 98 SE machine. Now I see Oracle Server for RH AS 9.0 (or something) and no Oracle 9i or 8i for RH 9.0 most basic edition.
    Sorry... Linux begginner and I forgot my version of RH 9.0.
    I am a C++ developer on Windows and use the OCI 7 and 8 wih MSVC 6.0 (at work). I would like to use same OCI wrapper with C at home on Linux.
    Thanks

  • Linux distribution

    Hello,
    i start to work with Flex Data Service and i also have to
    install a server under linux. I wonder if there is a linux
    distribution for which we know that FDS works well.
    Thanks!

    Fedora 20 is newly released and is having troubles while being installed in normal process
    so go ahead install it in basic graphics mode which u can find in troubleshooting.
    after the installation download and install amd catalyst driver from the official amd site it's a run file so just chmod 777 it and ./execute it in super user mode
    you might find the driver installed with errors without restarting the system simply follow the steps
    so follow these steps
    open up a terminal in super user mode and
    $ cd /lib/modules/fglrx
    $ vi /build_mod/kcl_acpi.c
                  press - esc button and " :set number "
                  go to line 999 edit the data type in the line
             from     ((acpi_table_handler)handler)(hdr);      to   ((acpi_tbl_table_handler)handler)(hdr);
             now execute the following commands to remove file by driver execution earlier
    $ rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    $ rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-fglrx.conf
    the next two are optional if in case u execute them please make sure it is lib64 or lib86 basing on which bit os u are using in the /usr folder
    $ rm /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/amdxmm.so
    $ rm /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so
    and now follow these instructions
    $ cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
    $ ./make.sh
    $ cd..
    $ ./make_install_sh
    this is it now reboot your system and search for amd catalyst control center and adjust setting so as to maximize your battery...
    same steps even with fedora 19 which is what i am on right now
    pass on the info around as i got this information after putting together many research points i found out to tackle this problem in goolgle search

  • Supported Linux Distributions

    I am wandering if there is a recommended/preferred Linux distribution for my 450 G1.

    Thank you PeerOne for your response.
    I have asked the question: What are you doing that Windows itself can't provide for you? Answer: In short. I have found Linux to give me more freedom of flexibility and security. It has also opened a door to technical learning that was not there before.
    As for the drivers. That was the primary basis of the posted question. It looks like the distro would be Suse according to the drivers from HP. However I prefer to use Ubuntu and wanted to see if it would be supported. I believe I may be able to use the driver no matter what distribution I go with. I just wanted to see if I could get manufacture confirmation.
    Unforunately for your flexibility and security is limited to not being supported by major software or hardware support and will be limited since they will support O/S that can provide them a source of income for R&D for both Windows and Apple. Until Linux become one O/S that can go up against Windows or Apple it will be always be last place. For Servers Unix has more Control and Command overall and that is where it holds sway and has Hardware and Software support for. For Linux having to many distro will insure it never is a Consumer Friendly O/S that consumer can rally behind one O/S that can complete with Windows or Apple market shares. Most everyday Computer users want to turn on and start using their computer and turn off when done not like the savvy computer users they know the ins and out but they are far in the minority compared to the major of computer users. So that is the real story why Linux never fully took off or could compete on the scale of Windows or Apple.

  • Schedule for Java ME SDK 3.0 for Linux?

    Hi,
    thank you for Java ME, we are using it since many years with on Linux development platform.
    Currently we plan to use the Sensor API, which is missing in WTK2.5.2 for Linux.
    What are the current plans for Linux?
    thanks,
    Marcel

    Another +1
    Come on Oracle, get it together. And why are you being so evasive about answering the OP's question? Is there a release schedule for Linux or not? For some reason I suspect not and you're desperately trying to avoid saying so.
    If there's no J2ME for linux there's no point me trying to write Java mobile apps any more. I suspect I will not be the only person to switch to writing Android apps instead. Google seem to understand and respect their Linux programmers.

  • SAPGUI for JAVA - "pre"define a trusted connection in "trustClassification" file on Linux

    Hello,
    I would like to deploy a new version of SAPGUI 730 for JAVA (JAVAGUI or PlatinGUI). And this time, to prevent my user from choosing the wrong "trust level classification" for the productive system, I would like to deploy a "trustClassification" file with a predefined trusted connection.
    In the help webpage called "Security policy", different configuration files are proposed :
    - <system preferences>/trustClassification
    - <user preferences>/trustClassification
    I easily found the "<user preferences>" directory in "/home/<user>/.SAPGUI" but this is not relevant for a central deployment with hundreds of people.
    And until now, I didn't find the "<system preferences>" directory. Can someone tell me what is it ?
    I'm using Linux Ubuntu 12.
    Regards,
    Simon

    Hello Simon,
    when you open About dialog and press the "more info" button, you get a long list of information.
    Beginning of the "Path Information", you will see a line starting with "SAP GUI system prefs".
    The value should be what you are looking for.

  • Is Solaris better for Java than Linux?

    Hi All,
    I am going to set up a distributed processing architecture in Java using RMI and other techniques.
    I will be using 2 servers(few more later), one will be used for fetching data from external resources like network/web, etc. and the other server will be used for processing that data.
    Now, i am using Linux, however, i have been reading a lot about Solaris 10 and especially its 2 main advantages for using it for Java development.
    1) Java is native to Solaris.
    2) Solaris has a much better support for multi threading than Linux.
    Please suggest me if i should move to Solaris 10
    Thanks in advance

    This is not my personal opinion, i am saying what link from sun.com saysNo, "+So, *i think* that Solaris *has much more power* than Linux.....and we have to find on that....+ " is your personal opinion. It is not what the article says.
    It's an old article, and it's talking quite specifically about threading models. Assuming for the sake of argument that the article is still accurate, it still doesn't answer the question of which OS is more suitable for your application - that will depend entirely upon the characteristics of the application itself.
    ...and i have asked this to you all just because i may find anyone that have used Solaris with JavaNobody can tell you how your application will run with either Solaris or Linux. If that sort of fine distinction is important you'll need to benchmark it, or at least take into account the actual threading metrics of your application.
    Choices between Solaris and Linux are generally made on management, environment, hardware, and other grounds, not the "does it run Java faster" question. For example if you're running on a platform with Niagara then of course you run Solaris. If you're going to need extensive runtime debugging instrumentation then you run Solaris just for DTrace. If you're running on commodity hardware then you probably run Linux for driver issues alluded to here.
    Your question, as asked, is unanswerable. Ask a better question.
    Edit: Or to give you a far more efficient version of the above "Try it and see." as given by Keith in reply 1.

  • Gui710 for java rev7 run in ubuntu(linux os)

    hello,
    I install the gui 710 for java rev7 in ubuntu(linux) whose java version is sun java Version 6 Update 11 . I can only run the guilogon and start graphic window in the command mode, but can not start graphic window when double click the guillogon icon in start menu. can you give me any solutions?

    It sounds to me that your gnome-terminal uses different environment variables than your shell (bash/csh/..).
    Please try the following:
    (1) create a file in the /?/SAPGui/bin directory called guilogon_local
    (2) The content of the file should be:
    #!/bin/sh
    export PLATIN_JAVA=###PATH to your 32bit JAVA executable
    /?/SAPGUI/bin/guilogon
    (3) chmod and chown the new file so you/your user can execute it.
    (4) change the comand attached to the SAP GNOME-Icon to your new guilogon_local
    The new file will actually set the PLATIN_JAVA environment and call afterwards the linked guilogon.

  • An Idea for a linux distribution

    Basically, I had my grandma in mind when I came up with this idea.  I thought about entitling this thread "linux distro for grandmas" but decided against it, because it might be offensive to some  (I'm pretty sure that somewhere in this great big world there is a grandma who is a great linux admin).  Besides, I know a number of people that aren't my grandma that this would be perfect for.
    Basically, there is usually a trade off between power and ease of use amongst Linux distributions.  On one end of the spectrum you have umm... ubuntu and xandros(?)  and on the other you have Linux from Scratch.  Anyway, my grandma would have a tough time with even the simplest distributions unless it was set up by a very patient and thoughtful admin.
    So my idea is to make a distribution that offers virtually no options to confuse the user.  Once the computer is booted, the user is confronted with a graphical login where they simply click (user1).  From there, they are presented with a few icons with titles such as "surf the internet", "check email", etc.  (maybe this is too patronizing?)
    I think that by default, their should be two users, one for the primary user, and one for guests, just to prevent guests from messing things up by screwing with configurations, or looking up pornography. I think that there are programs that convert linux boxes into dummy terminals which might help in such a distribution.  (maybe we can make certain config files read only)
    This distribution should run on  just about anything by default, and be a dream come true for any admin who wants to quickly and easily setup a computer for a friend or loved one (or fellow employees).  The installation process should be as simple as clicking "yes you're sure and you understand that by installing you will erase everything on the harddrive".  (ok, maybe we could include a few more options than that)
    This distribution would be unsuitable for anyone who would want to install or upgrade their own software, or play 3d games etc.  It should include support for playing music, surfing the internet, reading email, and all of the basics that many many people want to use their computer for.(without understanding ANYTHING about it)  I'd also like to make it unnecessary for end users to know any passwords, or commands period.
    No one wants grandma to get hacked, but it would be nice to remotely admin these installations  (although ideally, the need for administer's intervention would be absolutely minimal). So I was thinking that in addition to the two end user login accounts, we would need a login account meant exclusively for logging in via ssh, and, of course root.  the ssh specific login name and password would have to be chosen during installation, and this would be the only account that is accessible by ssh.  This user would be the only member of the wheel group.  Root... well root is root.
    Anyway, a quick google around didn't reveal any projects that had these goals in mind.  I just dreamed this up an hour ago, so it is not even well developed as a concept yet.
    Is this interesting to anyone else?

    It's not just Grannies that could use this.  Just yesterday I had some windows using friends touting the benefits of Xandros Presto. Essentially what you are talking about is a similar concept.  I like the idea too, and even better would be if a very few applications could be customised as packages that are available for download as extensions. Rather than every GNU app packaged with scarce descriptions it would be great to select a main tool for each category and document it, make it installable into the chosen GUI, even have pretty little logo graphics for each app.  Really user friendly.  You'd have to look seriously into the Gui layout of the main selections screen as well as each individual app so that it was uniform across the board.  I've always thought it would be better for this type of thing to limit the way things can be done also.  Most interfaces give numerous ways of completing the same task.  It'd be much simpler if there were only one primary way (even if the others were there but hidden, like keyboard shortcuts), so there is still room for advanced users to speed things up a bit.
    Being able to trim it all down to single option answers to basic operational questions would be fantastic.  There would also have to be no update manager, or if there was it should be designed to ship updates once a month tops.  No kernel updates, no nvidia updates.  Just a perfectly working balance of good apps that can't be broken easily.
    "Fantastic" would also be a great distro name
    The only thing I find wrong with this way of thinking though is that it seem like everyone can create a new distro but no-one seems to work on the interface of the applications, or the total system.  i.e. Making a distro you can only use what applications are available and if you choose openoffice for your office suite and there is an issue with it, you can't fix it, therefore you can't control the stability of the system.  It can only all come together properly when the applications can be simplified in conjunction with the OS UI and the authors have enough control to fix both the distro, and the applications.
    Cheers,
    Arkay.

  • How to set default audio device for java apps on Linux?

    I would like to find a way to choose a particular (ALSA) audio device for java applications. How can this be done without reprogramming the application or changing the default ALSA device? I came across "sound.properties", but could not find any information how to use this file on an ALSA system.
    Thanks for any help, Mark

    Eugenia wrote:Well, it's still not good enough.
    We can't satisfy everyone. What you want is a corner case. For most people ALSA and dmix works appropriately, and that is what esd uses by default. We cannot document and automate every configuration possible. That's up to the users.
    However, if you don't want to restart gnome, try the below... I make a few assumptions, but even if they're wrong, they're hardly difficult to work around.
    Just copy the /etc/esd.conf to ~/.esd.conf, make your change, then do killall esd. Presumably gnome will restart esd, and it ought to read your local config. If it doesnt, start it yourself.
    Feel free to write a script that automates this, or document it on the wiki.
    I have to restart Gnome to get this thing working. Other OSes *automatically* can use an alternative device. But if I change ESD, I will have to restart Gnome, no?
    Well, if you try my suggestion above, no. You can restart esd yourself. And that's what all the other distros do, except with some fancy GUI.
