Linux from Ubuntu...

Can I run it on an Intel Mac, and if so, how do I install it?

If you want to install it and run it in Parallels you need to choose the PC version, not a Mac version.
Edit: I just went back to the Ubuntu website to see what PPC/Intel versions you guys were talking about. I don't believe that the PPC version will run on an Intel Mac. (I guess I could burn the .iso to a CD and see if Rosetta could handle that, but it would eat a lot of memory.) The Intel version you see is the one to run in Parallels. I don't think the Intel version will run native on an Intel Mac because they are setup to run on a computer that uses bios. You might check in the Boot Camp forum to see if anyone has gotten it installed.
I have Ubuntu 6.10 running in Parallels. I'm no pro at this. I'm experiementing and learning! A baby barely crawling.

  • Newbie consulting about migration to Arch Linux from Ubuntu

I am using Ubuntu until I find Arch Linux, and I feel I quite agree with its principle of simplicity. I am considering a migration to Arch Linux.
The two major aspects I am thinking over are NTFS support and Chinese support.
As for NTFS, I need a system which has the capability to both read and write NTFS partitions, and stability is quite important for me. I cannot afford any data loss! With Ubuntu, I have never suffered a data loss from NTFS partitions.
As for Chinese, I do not care about the UI language. Usually I use US English. But I need the system to display Chinese and allow me to input Chinese.
Does Arch Linux meet my requirements? Or is it possible to configure it to have those capabilities?
Thank you! And sorry for my poor English.

    Runiq wrote:
ntfs-3g takes care of NTFS support. It's quite stable here, and I reckon Ubuntu uses it as well.
From my experiences with writing Japanese, I'd say that Arch is definitely able display Chinese as well. Writing chinese Characters shouldn't be that difficult either, given the fact that all Linux packages are basically the same. It's also possible to display and write Chinese characters in a console.
As for stability, I never had any problems, though it's in rare cases necessary to refer to the homepage before updating system-critical packages. I'd also update at least once a week if I were you.
    Thank you!
The stability I stated mainly refers to the stability of ntfs-3g.

  • What is the best client for ARD from ubuntu linux?

I attempt to connect to my mac mini running osx 10.7 from ubuntu linux using the default vncviewer application and the tightvnc client and I get to the login display but am unable to click on any of the users nor log in.  I was successful from my windows7 laptop, but not from my windows xp HTPC--ultravnc gets to the login prompt, showed me the password field, but didn't allow me to change focus to that field, however, this isn't reproducable since I get a different behavior each time I try to remote in.

Back up all data. Update all third-party software to the latest version and remove any you don't need. Download the Yosemite installer from the App Store. Run it.

  • I cannot connect to a Deskjet 3070A from Ubuntu 1204 or Ubuntu 10.10

I have been trying to set up a wireless printer.
I can print to the printer when it is attached via the USB cable but it loses all connection as soon as the cable is unplugged.
I installed the latest version of HPLIP 3.12.4 on both PCs but it is unable to find the printer as a wireless device when trying the setup with the USB cable plugged in on either PC.
I cannot configure the printer via WPS because my router a PLUSCOM WR-AR2317 doesn't have a WPS button and if I try to add a PIN there is nowhere in the router homepage (192.168.1.1) for me to add in a PIN.
I have printed off the Network config page and it shows that it has discoveded my home network but the wireless capability seems to not work at all, even though it says wireless is switched on.
The wireless blue light only flashes, there is no solid, always on light. I have had the printer about a metre away from the wireless router and it still doesn't seem to connect at all.
I have run hp-check and the output is below

The Deskjet series printers connect to wireless networks with what is called USB to Wireless.
You will need a supported operating system to connect a Deskjet to a wireless network.  Supported operating systems to connect the printer to a wireless network are Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit), Windows Vista (32bit and 64bit), and Mac OS X (10.5, 10.6, and 10.7).
While there is a software download option for Linux distributions, this is not the full featured software that is capable of adding the printer to a wireless network.  Most printers have a wireless setup wizard to accomplish this task, but the Deskjet series printers connect in a different way.
Once the printer is connected to a wireless network,  HPLIP 3.12.4 drivers should be able to locate the printer.
Click on Installing the Product Software for a Wireless Network Connection to receive instructions to connect to a wireless network using Windows and Mac operating systems.
Click on Software & Driver Downloads - HP Deskjet 3070A e-All-in-One Printer - B611a to download the appropriate software for a supported operating system to connect to a wireless network.

  • Arch linux for Ubuntu users

    Hello everyone,
When using Synaptic on Ubuntu it usually sets everything up for you so all the installed software tends to work out of the box without any need to change around configuration. Is the package manager in Arch Linux as integrated as the one from Ubuntu?
    Thanks
    Frank

I'm new to the linux scene (about 1 month now).  My most used distro (and my fallback if I mess up another distro on a seperate partition) was Ubuntu, until I figured out the basics of Arch.  After this enlightenment, I find Arch to be much easier to work with in terms of customizing apps, having the right libraries I want, and to just do daily functions.  I love to always check for updates to the system.  Ever notice in ubuntu there are about 30 repositories you have to sync with? In Arch there are the 3 basic repositories (extra, core, community) and multilib if you are on 64bit.  Working with pacman is much more efficient and controlled than apt-get imho.
One thing I hated with apt-get is that you add in 3rd party PPAs that are slow.  With Arch and its pacman + yaourt(aur) there is really no need for these 3rd party repositories as everything you can imagine is probably available in official repositories or built by the community.  Go check out https://aur.archlinux.org/ this is one of the coolest community made pool of apps around.
As mentioned before, the pacman doesn't hold your hands so be prepared to google and learn what some packages do.  For example, I am running gnome and install a KDE app called amarok.  Pacman will install everything (including KDE and qt libs) to get amarok started.  However, the only things it doesn't install (but it does tell you what) is extra depencies.
    Optional dependencies for amarok
libgpod: support for Apple iPod audio devices
libmtp: support for portable media devices
loudmouth: backend needed by mp3tunes for syncing
ifuse: support for Apple iPod Touch and iPhone
So, basically I just read through pacman's output, and either google or make a decision on what is needed.  This way my system is controlled tightly and I know more about the system.  In the future if I buy an ipod and want to sync, I'll remember there are some optional depencies available for this.  I can type "pacman -Qi amarok" and it will show me what it depends on as well as optional depencies.
Sorry for going on for so long but you get the point.

  • Broadcom Wireless Driver - LINUX (for Ubuntu LTS Slipstream)

    Hello,
I'm looking to build a slipstream ISO for Ubuntu LTS. The current LTS ISO comes with the wired NIC driver but not the wireless - can someone point me to the place to find the driver? I know I can plug in a wired connection and then do an update within Ubuntu but I'm trying to avoid that or at least have the wireless NIC work from the start.
    Thx.

which broadcom chip do you have? im pretty sure the 4313 broadcom chip has the same driver as my atheros chip in my b570 which the driver is already on linux mint, ubuntu and a few others you just need to do a little command line stuff.
to get mine working i had to type:
    sudo service network-manager stop
    sudo rmmod acer_wmi
    sudo modprobe acer_wmi
    sudo rfkill unblock all
    sudo service network-manager start
    sudo rmmod -f acer_wmi
that would get it working, then you type this to get it to stick past reboots:
    sudo su
    echo "blacklist acer_wmi" >> /etc?modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
after that you will have a fully working wifi connection that will last through reboots, although wicd seems to work better than network manager so i would recomend swapping them out after you get everything working.

  • Linux or Ubuntu on an S10 Netbook

I have a Lenovo S10.  It runs great, but in the spirit of gadgetry and curiosity, I would like to see what Linux or Ubuntu would be like on my S10. I would love to be able to boot it up from a USB drive. I have tried to read and understand the various online articles on this sort of project, but just couldn't figure it out.  I was wondering if someone helpful and patient could explain to me how to get Linux/Ubunto or some variant to boot up from a USB drive on my S10.
Thanks in advance for yoru help.
    [email protected]

Go to Google and do a search for unetbootin-windows-282.exe
That program will create a boot image on a USB drive.  It allows you to select one of a variety of versions of LInux/Unix or UBUNTU to put on a USB.  I have been playing with it and running it to put differnt variants of linux on my 8 GB Sandisk Cruzer.

  • OS X problems when restarting from Ubuntu

Let's start first speaking about my configuration.
    I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 mid 2009 with 2 HDs: 1 is SSD (250gb), the other HD (1TB).
SSD: 1 single partition with OSX Maverick.
HD: 1 partition for data, 1 for ubuntu, 1 Linux swap, 1 bootcamp with Windows 8.
In both there are the hidden partitions for EFI and Recovery.
    The problem:
Some problems came out when I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS natively on my HD.
I configured Refind (see Refit), resized the data partition on the HD, installed ubuntu and I've built an hybrid MBR through gdisk to bypass the limit of max. 4 partitions (considering that I already have bootcamp).
When I want to switch from Ubuntu to Mavericks, I click restart and thanks to Refind I boot directly into OSX Mavericks.
At this point 2 strange things are going to happen under OS X until I completely restart my macbook.
    Some of them are:
    - The system time is not correct. My timezone (UTC +2) goes to UTC.
    - The trackpad click (not the tap) sometimes does not work. If I connect/disconnect or disconnect/connect my magic mouse, the click starts working again for a small amount of time.
    - It happened one time that the login keychan got corrupted and I had to fully restore it.
I decided to write here since I didn't found similar problems over the internet. Do you have any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

    Hi Everyone
We have blocked access on Perimeter Routers for Some specific ports like telnet , SSH etc

If some body installs Ubuntu 9.04 Virtual Machine and then invokes virtual XP some how  the user gets 10 series IP and still manages to access the servers
How can i block the same
While checking for IP Accounting on Router there are no traces on the Vitual IP but server login details shows the IP address from whcih accessed with source IP as 10.x.x.x

Because your target is a downrev oracle database version you might need to use client compoents like linux 9i to be successful :- [http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oracle9i/htdocs/linuxsoft.html]. The more modern 'instantclient' [http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html], [http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html] does not appear available at this verion. Its possilble this version might have issues when installing this version on ubuntu 9.04 ... i simply don't know and too hard for me to look up.
I personally am unaware of any thin client driver technology that would help you here, that isnt to saythere isnt one.
This si not an area i am now current in, i merely really wish to say you do not need a full database install.

  • Need to boot Linux from USB

I have been trying to get this to work for a while now but it appears with the current firmware it is just not possible to boot a Linux OS from a usb drive.
Is this true? or is there a way it can be done?
Basically I work in a forensic computing lab and as our portable forensic machines we have a total of 16 MacBook Pro's all the same spec set up to dual boot WinXP and Leopard.
So far they've been excellent giving us the benefits of both OS's to run the different forensic tools on.
My problem is i need to boot a linux distro from a portable drive (USB or Firewire is fine but USB would be better) for a particular purpose.
As you can imagine, our system gets filled with loads of rubbish and we need to clean them regularly so i have created an install from a wiped drive containing everything we need on the drive. I have then created some scripts in Linux that use dcfldd to create an image of the entire drive and compress it to about 13GB.
I also created another script that puts the image back on the internal drive.
This basically allows me to put clean "forensically" secure images back on the laptops within about an hour. i can also then update any software etc before creating a new up to date image.
Currently I have to use a Linux boot CD to start the laptop with an external drive attached holding the scripts and image. i would like to just have a bootable thumb drive that holds everything and be able to start from it by holding the option key, put the image on the internal drive and reboot. its very quick except from the booting and running from CD whereas a small puppy linux build or similar would be very quick. And because we sometimes have to do this onsite speed is a major issue.
Am i correct in thinking that the firmware just doesn't allow it or has anyone managed to get this to work?
If it is the firmware, does anyone know if there is an update on the horizon that will remedy this problem?
I should state i have tried many linux builds (using MBR and GPT options etc) and refit and nothing allows the drive to boot with refit stating the firmware has limited support for legacy systems on USB.
I also know that I CAN (and have tried) using a Mac OS installed on the USB drive but it appears to have its own problems. it is fine when the internal drive is empty but because in my case it has an OS on it the system actually seems to use some of the components of the internal drive so when trying to image over it i get conflicts. The Mac OS also takes a lot of room on the drive when i just want a stream lined OS for this job.
The main reason i don't want to use Mac OS though is that i plan to later add images for our doing our lab machines which are PCs and would therefore not boot the Mac OS.
If anyone can help with this I would be grateful.
    Cheers
    Chris

Most Linux distros will not boot from USB devices as is. I believe you're in luck with Ubuntu because there are some methods of running it from USB flash drives that just may do the trick for you. I ran across this when looking into putting Ubuntu on my MSI Wind.
    Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick | USB Pen Drive Linux.webloc;
On the Ubuntu site look for information in the documentation for installing on pendrives.
I'm pretty sure that the methods for booting from USB flash drives will apply to any USB drive. From what I learned Linux simply isn't set up to boot from a flash drive or USB drive without some effort on the part of the installer. I've never done this myself so I can't tell you what to do only some pointers to where you may find how to do it.
After my experience using Ubuntu on my Wind I decided it wasn't worth the effort involved. OS X is simply much better than Linux in every respect. I just wasn't interested in becoming any geekier than I already am. I had enough of that 20 years ago!

  • Linux (specifically Ubuntu) on an IdeaCenter B540?

    Hi folks,
Has anyone succeeded in getting Linux (specifically Ubuntu) to work with an IdeaCenter B540? I ask because I've managed to wipe my harddisk and rather than pay for a new Windows recovery disk I decided to install Linux instead. (I like Linux, and am not much of a Windows fan!) Linux works fine from a LiveUSB and installs easily, but the problems start after the machine is shut down and restarted. On rebooting, the computer cannot find the operating system (Error 1962: No operating system found...). Some reseach, and a call to Levono support, suggests that the boot-loader is hard-coded into the bios so the machine will only boot from one file, with a specific name, and at one location, when in UEFI mode. I've installed rEFInd and let it discover all the .efi files, but can't figure out which one to rename, and where to put it.
(Levono support were helpful in confirming the bios issue in EFI mode, but wouldn't or couldn't advise me what to do about it.)
The fallback is to convert the hdd to MBR/MSDOS mode and set the bios to Legacy, but I'm curious to see if it can be made to work in UEFI mode.
Any help, advice or suggestions gratefully recieved!
    Cheers
    Pete

Go to Google and do a search for unetbootin-windows-282.exe
That program will create a boot image on a USB drive.  It allows you to select one of a variety of versions of LInux/Unix or UBUNTU to put on a USB.  I have been playing with it and running it to put differnt variants of linux on my 8 GB Sandisk Cruzer.

  • Is it possible to install Oracle linux from usb?

    Hi Guys,
Is it possible to install Oracle linux from usb? If yes, may I know the exact procedures to do so.
I am using linux ubuntu and I tried to make a bootable usb with the dvd iso of oracle linux 6 using Unetbootin software. The installation started well.
but after formatting the harddisk, I got an error as shown below
    Missing ISO 9660 image
The installer has tried to mount image #1, but cannot find it on the hard drive.
I think ISO 9660 image is something connected with the CD image or something. But not sure...
Can anyone help me out with this situation.... Thank you..

    HI
I know this is an old post but has anyone resolved this issue? I am trying to install OEL 6U4 via usb with no luck. Keep getting Missing ISO 9660 Image. I have tried all the tools under the sun to write it to USB, also tried copying the iso to the Boot disk.. as stated above... no luck ....
I have checked the installation files using md5 and they are fine... just in case downloaded it again as well as 6U3 and 6U0.
I have installed almost every version of linux there is... but OEL is definitely the most difficult and after 3 days, I am ready to give up. Any idea?
BTW. I am using utilities on windows 8 to write the iso to USB.
    Thanks

  • Installing linux from windows

Is there any project like wubi that install linux from windows directly in a partition?

thanks for the suggestion of ubuntu, but arch is so better (i tryed ubuntu before, and actually i have some trouble with ubuntu and my laptop).
maybe i could install linux in a virtual machine and then copy it to the partition (i just don't want get locked at the command line again, i don't care if it takes more effort to install)
You have one option here - don't use KDE but something lightweight, which doesn't pull 100s of MBs od dependencies, like *box, tiling manager...
And that stuff with the command line - I see it as a necessary purgatory after using win-do$
