Linux hosting vs Windows hosting
Howdy,
What is the difference between Linux vs Windows web hosting. Why Linux is cheaper compare to Windows. Is Linux secured? Can some one suggest what kind of hosting I should go for a realestate website where people can submit the details of their requirement
and services.
Thx.

Feedback on XP Pro (guest OS) installation under VMware 5.5 on Linux host.
I successfully installed 10g XE on XP Pro (32 bit - with service pack 2 ) guest OS under Linux host (RedHat 4.0 ES - update 2).
The initial attempt was unsuccessful because of the MS Antivirus program (as some suggested on this forum). I then shutdown the listener service from command line, cleaned the registry for oracle entries (oci.dll was used by some application - I found it was Microsoft Transaction Server), then removed the oracleXE directory , set the oracle listener service to manual start (in services window), and then rebooted the machine. When logged back in, verified that the listener was not up, stopped the antivirus program and then reinstalled 10g XE. This time the installation was successful.
Realized the sys and system password is the same and by using the sql command tool as sys, you can create new tablespaces, new users, etc. (I could not find any other way to create a new tablespace or adding a new datafile to the existing users tablespace , from within the html_db based administration tool. I am a DBA, so I used the command line from the "Run SQL command line" icon (link). It displayed the SQL> prompt and then I connected as sysdba.
Next week, I will try installing 10g XE, on a Linux virtual machine (guest) running on XP 64 bit host. I will update this posting then...
I hope this proves useful.Understood.
I will just create a simple document for our end users explaining and including related sql scripts - or better yet - I will configure, install XE on Linux to a specific directory and then do a cold backup - make a bzipped tar file to distribute to the customer (I know this type of distribution/installation is not supported but it is working and tested with Forms 6i c/s runtime with proper patchset). This is why I will support the XE Linux version only - you don't have to deal with the "registry".
For our application XE will serve real well - for a simple scenario creation, they can use XE and Forms 6i C/S runtime on Linux. If they want to use our real time game support which will populate the data in close-to-real time and uses iAS EE forms services, then they need the install standard edition.
I will update with Linux VMware virtual machine installation feedback as soon as I finish installing. -
ISE MAB is not Triggered for Linux Host
Hello,
We have configured MAB for hostst that do not support 802.1x, and in general working for most of the devices. For Some linux machines however, MAB is never triggered, i.e "debug mab all" and "debug radius" commands do not produce any output for the port. "show authentication session interface" command shows the 802.1x fail over to MAB, and after it MAB process starts to run but stays in running state without finishing.
If we put another MAB host as Windows 7 or XP or Printer, it works properly passsing tthe MAB Authentication and assigned Vlan. If we put the port as to the normal "switchport mode access" and "switchport access vlan x", the device shows up in the MAC address table of the switch, and starts to work.
As additional steps we have configured "authentication mode open" and "dot1x control-direction in" inorder to trigger or start the MAB Process allowing the packets out, but the "show interface " command the input packets counter remains 0, although output packet counters seem to increase continously to 1000 and above.
The IP Addresses are static, and it is a requirement, so dhcp may trigger MAB but this is not a choice currently.
IP device tracking is enabled, but again this did not change anything
Any recommendations or workarounds for this Problem? Although seems an endpoint issue, that it never produces a single packet , there may be some
solutions to trigger MAB or learn the switch the Mac address of the Linux host, i.e. keepalive. We are also looking at the host side,
The port configuration is:
switchport access vlan 98
switchport mode access
ip access-group ACL-ALLOW in
authentication event fail action next-method
authentication event server dead action reinitialize vlan 97
authentication event server alive action reinitialize
authentication host-mode multi-auth
authentication open
authentication order dot1x mab
authentication priority dot1x mab
authentication port-control auto
authentication periodic
authentication timer reauthenticate server
authentication violation restrict
mab
dot1x pae authenticator
dot1x timeout tx-period 10
spanning-tree portfast
Thanks in Advance,
Best Regards,Hi Ravi,
Since the linux is some kind of embedded linux, we could not get the tcp dump on the PC itself, but tried to see what is going on with a span of this port. What is interesting is that the machine does not produce even a single ethernet or IP packet and remains completely silent. (We thought dhcp would be solution but the configuration file only allows to statically assign IP address).
What we think is that somehow the machine starts to send packets after receiving a packet like Wake on LAN or arp. As you see on the port configuration the machine starts in Vlan 98, so in this Vlan it is not possible to get this packet from any other hosts on the same IP subnet since the IP of the host is Vlan 6. But in order to ISE to assign this Vlan 6 to the port with MAB, Mac Address of the host needs to be authenticated, which is not occuring because of the silence problem.
As a workaround to a similar problem, we changed the "switchport access vlan 98" to "switchport access vlan 6" and with this configuration the Mac address is learned and the host is authenticated by ISE and port is assigned to Vlan 6 dynamically which is observed on "show authentication session interface" command output. This is also not accepted because the access port configuration is required to be as standard as possible due to changing of the cabling frequently. So every MAB host should start with a PreAuthentication Vlan, and go to final Vlan after Authentication and authorizaiton with Posture checking or profiling.
As a second workaround these kind of machines are being worked on supporting dot1x, but this is a tedious process because often you need to escalate to the producer, and enhancement requests often prolong to be confirmed or denied.
Since we meet this problem also with some Printers, we think this is a problem of the TCP/IP Stack of the Operating System of the host. We are searching if there can be some mechanism to be able to make the host start conversation with a packet through a keepalive or some other protocol (or a script) that can be enabled.

Hi,
I have an issue when using the Microsoft RDP client on Mac OSX 10.X when connecting to a Linux host running the XRDP service(XRDP host is authenticating to an AD DC).
Exactly the same connection parameters work when connecting to the XRDP host from a Windows server using the local Microsoft RDP Client and the same authentication credentials, so I am confused as to what might be creating the issue.
I have also checked that I am able to connect from my Mac to the remote linux box that is running the XRDP service, by using another App on OSX called CoRD. This also connects without issue.
Are there any differences in the way the Mac version of Microsoft RDP authenticates compared to its Windows counterpart?
Any advise appreciated. Happy to provide any logs.Hi,
As this case has been quiet for a while.I need to close the case and will mark it as Answer. If you still have any issue,I suggest you ask in a new thread.
Thanks for your Support & understanding!

Running iTunes within a WinXP guest system on Linux host
Since I don't think Apple will release a Linux iTunes version I am thinking about running WinXP as a guest on a Linux host (VMware). Could I safely use iTunes within this virtual machine, buy songs from the iTunes Store,... or would the digital rights management of iTunes fail to run in such a guest system?
Thanks!I'm trying to do much the same by using VirtualBox on Ubuntu 7.10 (easier to setup networking than VMWare). I haven't bought anything from the Apple Store but I do know that importing CDs though a virtual WinXp doesn't seem to work with iTunes. Other CD/DVDROM apps seems to work OK.
So there may be some fundamental problem with trying to virtualise iTunes.
I know it doesn't work under WINE or CROSSOVER. -
Solaris hosts modify pwdLastAuthTime, Linux hosts do not
I'm trying to debug how Linux hosts bind against my Sun Java Directory Server (6.3).
I would eventually like to collect information on the last time someone authenticated. This isn't perfect, as there's no way to see if someones logging in using an authorized SSH key, but at least I could start to get something.
When I log into solaris hosts with a password, this pwdLastAuthTime updates. When I log into RHEL5 hosts, it does not.
man pam_ldap says:
"To authenticate a user, pam_ldap attempts to bind to the directory server using the distinguished name of the user (retrieved previously)."
So, in theory, the pwdLastAuthTime should be updating as such, no? No name caching is enabled on the machine in question. Are we talking about the same user in both cases? Are you able to check if the BIND operation in the access log is actually for the user and not the proxyagent (or equiv in Redhat)?

Using java on linux v/s windows
wondering if anyone could help me out here.
can't seem to find a lot of doucumentation on this .. or may be i was just searching using the wrong key words!!!Hi again,
coz i just
learnt from the other post u can't run certain exec
commands...wat else can and can't u do.?just try it. it SHOULD NOT be different except when you try to access
system specific thinks like interacting with system processes, file handling and so on. But of course you can run exec commands, but you
will see that the command has to be different. I wrote on Linux and on
Windows (ok, I never tried to port a program between the platforms) and
I can say it is not that different.

RAC 10g Linux VMWare on windows 2000
I have installed RAC 10g for Linux VMWare on Windows 2000 and have an issue with the Enterprise Manager console. Does anyone now how to improve the display of Mozilla Browser. The appearance is quite blurred and some buttons and text are barely visible. I though about changing the desktop resolution but this made things worse.
I have found a workround, which is to use another workstation I have on my network to launch the Enterprise Manager console. However, I would still like to know if anyone has a proper solution.

Oracle11g heterogenous data guard Linux-ASM primary, Windows-Filesystem standby
Is it possible to setup a standby database on (Windows 64bit) OS filesystem with 32GB datafile limit that syncs with a primary database on (Linux 64bit) ASM that has datafiles that are larger than 32GB.
There is a Linux-ASM standby in place, this will be an additional standby, to be used as a reporting database using Oracle11g snapshot standby
I have used datapump to export-import from Linux-ASM to Windows-filesystem by precreating additional 32GB datafiles in the Windows database, the import works, it takes too long to import for a reporting database
it's not clear to me how to synchronize the new standby without using RMAN full or incremental backup-restores
Any suggestions or suggested document IDs are welcome!
Thank you,
Drew SalisburyHi Drew,
Standby files have to be the same size/distribution as the primary - that can be differnet os, in ASM etc but they have to be the same number and size.
There are some ways to speed up import - parallel etc but in a big database there is always a lot of time lost in index building post data load.
How feasible is it to shrink the datafiles in wondows nack to 32GB......?
Can you set up ASM on windows?
You could use streams or something to replicate and keep the copy you created up to date rather than using physical standby?
Cheers,

Hello everyone,
I recently installed VirtualBox on my Arch Linux install to tinker with GitLab on a Debian VM. I've set up a standard VM running Debian (wheezy) and made sure it's network settings were set to "NAT". However, I am unable to ping or ssh to this VM (which is running an ssh server among other things). Where this gets a bit weirder is that I'm perfectly able to ping and ssh to my host machine (running Arch).
I installed the version of VirtualBox available on the official repos and I'm running on the default kernel too.
I've install VirutalBox by following the infos posted on the wiki. My current user is part of the vboxusers group :
% groups duane
disk lp wheel uucp locate rfkill games network video audio optical floppy storage scanner power users vboxusers
I've added the proper kernel modules to /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf so that they are loaded automatically on boot time :
vboxdrv
vboxnetadp
vboxnetflt
vboxpci
% lsmod | grep vbox
vboxpci 14581 0
vboxnetflt 17612 0
vboxnetadp 18355 0
vboxdrv 264794 5 vboxnetadp,vboxnetflt,vboxpci
I must also note that the net-tools package is installed.
Now, I get the ip adress of my host :
% ip addr

Then I try to ping it from my Debian guest.

And I try to ping my guest from my host :

There. I hope I didn't give too much information.
I don't really understand what's going on there, usually that workfow works immediately in all the distributions I tried before, and on windows as well. I think I followed all the steps to make this work and yet it doesn't, and I'm not sure this problem is related to VirtualBox itself.
Thanks in advance for any tip or comment on that.

That way your guests are completely hidden from the local lan which may be desirable if e.g., your host is a laptop which you move around various places. The guests can access anything outbound and you can still ssh to them from the host (and also, using ssh ProxyCommand via that host if you want to access them remotely).

I need to give a webinar in a few hours. I need to demo a website for a new
client and he asked for a webinar. To be honest I have never been
involved in a webinar--neither as host nor participant. He suggested
GoToMeeting but that requires Mac or Windows apparently.
Anybody know what tool I could use for this? Not sure what he has but
it ain't Linux, that's for sure. Actually I am pretty sure he has Windows. My online school uses Elluminate for their webinars, and it works quite well with Linux as long as you have Sun's version of Java installed. Very few issues with it overall.

I'm accustomed to having sites hosted on Windows servers. So
when I use SSI's I set the home page as an ASP page, since the
server doesn't look for a .shtml page as the default.
A client is hosting on a Linux server and I'm not sure what
kind of page I'm supposed to use for the home page. I tried simply
changing the extension to .php but that didn't work (duh).
I'm sure this is simple, but it's not something I've dealt
with before. Suggestions?

to your list
