Linux_ias_903_Disk1.cpio.gz is bad

I've downloaded 903 linux w/ webcache 2 times which tagged "new" in otn download page. And the cpio file produce weird error.
Need help..

did you clear out your temporary internet files from within your browser before downloading the second time? Or are you behind a proxy that caches? My guess is that the intial download was corrupted and you have it cached somewhere when performing the second download. The file on their server is good.

  • Cannot unmount disk

I am trying to install OS X 10.4.6 on an iBook.
I am installing from a DVD copy made by the local apple store.
The "Checking your installation DVD" part completes without errors.
During the install it stops and says:
BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format
Install failed: some files for BSD may not have been written correctly
I've tried this several times, always with the same error.
In the Disk Utility - First Aid tab, I tried Verify Disk and Repair disk, both which fail with "Could not unmount disk"
I also tried Verify Disk Permission and Repair Disk Permissions, both of which complete successfully.
Then I tried to erase the disk (1 pass), and it says:
    Zero Disk failed with error
    Could not unmount disk.

Advice about installing Mac OS X Erasing and formatting your disk
When you install Mac OS X, you can erase the destination disk you select. In the “Select a Destination” pane of the Installer, click the Options button. Select Erase and Install then choose a format. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Important Do not choose UNIX File System (UFS) unless you need to work with this format. If you choose UFS, Mac OS 9 and all Mac OS 9 applications must be installed on a Mac OS Extended format disk to use them with the Classic environment.
To install Mac OS X on the same disk or disk partition as Mac OS 9, the disk must be in Mac OS Extended format. If it isn’t, quit the Installer and back up your files, then reformat the disk.
You can also partition your hard disk into several volumes before you install Mac OS X. In the Installer, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility and click Partition. Partitioning the disk erases the entire disk, so be sure to back up your files first.
    Installing optional software
Easy Install installs all the software you need to use Mac OS X, but does not install some additional software. If you want to install this optional software or you don’t want to install all the software installed using Easy Install, click Custom Install and select the items you want to install. If you want to install this optional software later, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and double-click Optional Installs.
    Locating the Installer log
When you install Mac OS X, the Installer saves a log of the installation. To see the log, open Console (in /Applications/Utilities), click Logs, then click the triangle next to / var/log and select install.log.
    Reinstalling Mac OS X
To reinstall Mac OS X, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon, then follow the onscreen instructions. When you see the “Select a Destination” pane, click Options to select how to install Mac OS X:
    • Select “Archive and Install” to save your existing system files, user accounts and their home folders, and existing network settings. The Installer saves files in a folder named Previous System so that you can copy them to an appropriate location later. You cannot start up your computer using the Previous System folder.
    • Select “Erase and Install” to erase the destination volume and install a new copy of Mac OS X. If you select this option, you will lose all your files and the software you have installed on the destination volume, so you may want to back it up first. If you select this option, you can choose the format for the volume. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the pop-up menu.
Setting up and connecting to the Internet
If you have an existing Internet service provider (ISP) and you’re installing Mac OS X for the first time, you need to enter your Internet connection information when installation finishes. Be sure to have the information available. If you have problems connecting to the Internet, contact your ISP to make sure you have the correct information.
Advice about using Mac OS X If you have problems starting up
If you cannot start up your computer, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and restart your computer while holding down the C key. Choose, Choose > Open Disk Utility, then click First Aid to repair your disk.
If you have problems starting up your computer and you have devices connected to your computer such as FireWire drives, USB printers, or external displays, try disconnecting them before starting up again.
Upgrading your applications and other software
For best results with Mac OS X, look for versions of your applications that are built for Mac OS X. Check the Mac OS X website for information about available applications:
If you cannot find Mac OS X versions, upgrade to the latest Mac OS 9 version to use with the Mac OS X Classic environment. Check with the manufacturers for the latest updates.
Using POP email accounts and On My Mac mailboxes in Tiger and Panther
If you have a shared home folder and you access a POP email account using Mail in both Mac OS X Panther and Mac OS X Tiger, you will not see messages that you retrieve in one version when you switch to the other.
As an alternative, you can deselect the option to remove copies from the server after retrieving your messages. To change this option, open the Accounts pane of Mail preferences and click Advanced.
You will not see messages saved in a mailbox on your computer when you switch from one version to another. To avoid this problem, use separate home folders for each version of Mac OS X.
Your IMAP account will synchronize automatically when you switch between Mail in Tiger and Panther.

  • How do you fill in a form that was saved as a template? When I try, the "template" shifts, which is not how a template should work!

How do you fill in a form that was saved as a template? When I try, the "template" shifts, which is not how a template should work!
Templates, as I understand them, are fixed; you can "fill them in" without shifting them. Yet, I've saved doc as a template AND it shifts. Argh!

    Thanks for your response.
I've managed to fix it but I wouldn't recommend the following as I'm sure its unsupported and I'll probably have problems down the line
    On the host
    * mv /etc/zones /etc/zones.bak
    * reboot single user
    * apply kernel patch (the one that ultimately I had to get on and which was giving pre-req dependency errors when running zones)
    * create a new zone now that host system is all up to date
    * Copy the operating system directories of the new zone (the one that's all patched) over the troublesome zone (the one that can't take the patch). Take backups first
    * cd /zones/new-zone/root
    * find sbin -print | cpio -pudm /zones/bad-zone/root
    * find usr -print | cpio -pudm /zones/bad-zone/root
    * find lib -print | cpio -pudm /zones/bad-zone/root
    * cd /zones/new-zone/root/var
    * find sadm -print | cpio -pudm /zones/bad-zone/root/sadm (this copies patches and pkgs directories and I'm sure a lot of other stuff that I didn't want)
    * mv /etc/zones.bak /etc/zones
    * reboot host
    * boot the old zone up. It should now have up to date patches
I'm sure there are real no-no's in taking this approach but it seems to have worked for me. I'll update if I find there are some horrors down the line

  • DiskWarrior can't fix disk, but I can still mount it?

My MacBook kernel panicked the other day while I was using it, so I shut it down, and tried to reboot it. Upon rebooting, the Apple logo will appear and the loading wheel starts to spin, but then it just shuts down.
I then decided to boot into single-user mode which worked fine. I proceeded to run fsck, and was told that I had keys out of order, and the drive couldn't be repaired. My volume can be mounted though, and I can browse through my files in the single-user mode.
I figured that I should probably give DiskWarrior a try. I booted from the DVD which also worked fine, and rebuilt it, but the disk error is still coming up, and it continues to shut down on boot. I even tried the scavenge mode that DiskWarrior has, but it was no use. I've also reset the PRAM, and the SMC.
So what do you guys think I should do next? I thought that if my filesystem was really badly hosed, I wouldn't be able to mount it and browse through it with no problems, but then again DiskWarrior couldn't even make it boot.

I just erased my drive, even zeroed it out. Disk Utility and fsck don't have a problem with my drive anymore. However, my Tiger DVD (which I must install first as I have a Leopard upgrade disc) is giving me an odd error when trying to install.
The installer goes for a little bit, then tells me "There were errors installing the software. Please try installing again". A quick check at the installer log tells me:
"BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format"
"Install failed: some files for Essentials may not have been written correctly."
The DVD verification prior to installing passes just fine though. This is really beginning to be a massive headache. Coincidently, while backing up my data onto my PC through SATA, that seems to have gone dead too. I'm stuck with just my iPhone for a computer right now. I can't say I'm a happy camper.

  • Re installing Tiger OS X 10.4.6 Hang up on Disc 2

My G5 has been giving me fits lately, among them, not letting me install OS X 10.6.2. So I Zero erased the hd and now when I went to re install 10.4.6, I get an error using disc 2. while trying to instal iWork trial " BomFatal Error- cpio read error: bad file format.
Anyway by pass this? The system will not let me go anywhere without Disc 2 being installed first.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hold the OPtion/alt key down at bootup with the Install disk #1 in, it should eventually show that as a choice to boot from.
That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

  • The never ending installation loop - Help!

    Dear Apple Forums,
I can honestly say I used to hate apple, but since buying one for university use I've come to love my little MacBook Pro. However, it has recently suffered a massive problem and I've run into a very difficult situation. My macbook pro started giving me problems a couple weeks ago with the mac screen of death ("please restart your computer" in 3 languages) and I attempted to fix it using the mac troubleshooting guide online to no avail. Things only got worse as it took up to 7 attempts to get to the desktop. I finally decided to reformat this bad boy in hopes that whatever was wrong with it would go away.
However, I've run into a major problem with the installation process. It seemed to be running fine through the first Mac OS X install disk, and it asked me to restart my computer, which I attempted when it showed me the screen of death. I just ignored it and continued on by inserting the second disk when prompted. Now I seem to be stuck in an endless loop of installation. I get to about half way through the installation when it tells me there was an error and that I should try installing again. I've attempted to install the second disk about eight times now, and I don't know what I need to do next.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Maine, and I don't want to have to drive to New Hampshire to fix my precious computer.

Figured I'd start recording the errors I get in the Installer Log:

  • Reinstalling 10.4 after failed 10.4.5 upgrade

Having trouble getting 10.4 reinstalled on my mini after the 10.4.5 upgrade (system was running fine on 10.4.4) borked the login process.
    The story up to now...
Mac mini (1.25/40GB/1GB/Combo) was running 10.4.4 with no problems.
Downloaded and installed 10.4.5 upgrade yesterday - on reboot system went from white screen to blue screen (no login prompt) to black (single user login mode). Produced a number of errors regarding "udsserver_init: bad file descriptor".
Finally decided to just reinstall 10.4 from the DVD that came with the mini and redo the upgrade process.
Problem: every time I try to install 10.4 from the system DVD, I get "There were errors installing the software - please try installing again" part way through the install process. So far I have:
    - install keeping previous system settings (eg user account info)
    - erase the internal disk using Disk Utility (on the DVD) and then install
    - clear parameter RAM, erase disk, and install
The install fails each time, though not necessarily in the same place. Restarting and trying the install again seems to allow it to go a bit farther, but mayby that's just my imagination. System was problem-free with 10.4.4.
I'm out of ideas - any other hints?
    K
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    More info -
Decided to try installing using an unopened retail copy of Tiger I had laying about rather than using the mini's install DVD. No joy - same result - install always fails during the Essentials portion of the install. So the DVD doesnt seem to be at fault.
The Tiger retail installer did invoke a crash log - the first line says:
"BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format"
As a last-ditch effort, I stuck the Tiger install DVD into my PowerBook, put it into Target Disk mode, and then plugged into the mini's FW port and used the PB's SuperDrive to run the install ... and got the same result - the install fails somewhere in the middle of Essentials. So I guess the combo drive is not at fault either.
Interestingly, the mini happily booted from the 10.3.9 image on my PB's hard drive. I thought that OS installs were more closely tied to the hardware...
At this point I cry uncle - I assume I have some sort of disk or IO subsystem problem beyond my control. Time to see if the extended warranty I bought with this system (it's about 6 months old) is worth the extra money I paid.

  • Cannot install GarageBand 2

I have a 3 3/4 year old Imac and I have been having problems installing from DVD's though it will play commercial DVD's. I recently purchased ILIfe '05 and was able to install IPhoto off the included CD but I cannot install GarageBand off the DVD. • Tiger refuses to install to G4 Quicksilver

Everytime I try to install Tiger to my G4 Quicksilver I get the dreaded "BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format" error in the install log. This error always occurs around the time the essentials are being loaded. The installer just says there was an error and to try installing again.
I found mentions of this problem all over the web, but no real solutions.
Panther 10.3 installs on this machine without incident. TechTool Pro 4 passes every piece of hardware and I can run the Apple Hardware test for hours at a time without error. I've tried installing from a firewire DVD drive as well as the internal drive. The Tiger install disk I am using worked on my previous machine several times. I've tried different RAM.
    What gives?

Okay, keeping all of your suggestions in mind, I ordered a set of Tiger Install CD's to replace my install DVD and replaced the optical drive.
I installed Panther, updated to 10.3.9 and was able to use this machine without so much as one crash or freeze up for over three weeks. I rendered with Final Cut, burned DVD's, used firewire drives etc. without incident. I've run TechTool Pro as well as the Apple Hardware test on this machine over and over and over without a single problem.
My Tiger install CD's arrived in the yesterday and I decided to give the install another try.
    I STILL DOESN'T INSTALL
First try, black screen of death. Restart.
Second try, please try installing again message. Restart.
Third try, please try installing again message. Chose restart and the black screen popped up.
    I give up for now.
    Some observations,
The install CD's are version 10.4.6 my install dvd was version 10.4.3
The install still crashes during the essentails part of the install. The message in the log file now reads,
    libgcc_s.l.dylib /user/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib
The white parts of the screen such as the title bars etc. are dotted with red dots on my LCD. I'm using the Apple DVI interface on my graphics card. Graphics card issue perhaps?
Is Tiger so fundamentally different from Panther that it should have this much trouble installing on a machine that runs Panther perfectly?
Looks like I'm just going to have to live with Panther and Final Cut 4.5 for now.

  • SOLUTION for the never ending reboot loop when charging

I used my iPad until the battery was completely flat, then when I went to charge it, it got stuck in the never ending reboot loop where it shows the Apple logo for about 30 seconds, then shows the home screen for a split second before shutting down and repeating the whole process again and again.
So here's what you need to do to fix this problem without having to restore or plug into iTunes.
    1. Plug in the charger
    2. When the Apple logo appears, unplug the charger
    3. As soon as you see the home screen appear, plug the charger back in. You need to do this quickly as the home screen only shows for a split second
    4. The loading wheel should appear and shut down the iPad
    5. Leave the iPad for a good 30mins or so just to get some battery life into before you start using it again.
    And that's it!

Figured I'd start recording the errors I get in the Installer Log:
localhost : BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format
localhost : Install failed: some files for GarageBandinstrumentsTiger may not have been written correctly.

  • Mavericks: Backup: Stuck at "prepare" after a few successful backups

    Hi,
after a few backups (two or three) the backup is stuck at the preparation phase. In the console logs I found these lines:
    06.07.14 05:31:17,660 com.apple.backupd[20453]: Starting automatic backup
    06.07.14 05:31:17,675 com.apple.backupd[20453]: Backing up to /dev/disk2s2: /Volumes/ExtHD03/Backups.backupdb

06.07.14 05:31:17,931 mds[76]: (Warning) QueryTask: Haven't sent anything for 60 seconds; try despite not having received RTS notification.
The backup before that logged that:

I assume that the servermgr lines are not really relevant.
What do the lines with "mds[76]: (Warning) QueryTask..." mean?
Can I find more details about that?
Can this be the reason for the backup problem?
I was trying to do backup with a Time Capsule before, but after some time it won't even do a single backup (stuck at prepare). Now I did a fresh install with Mavericks and attached a fresh 1TB HD (SATA) with a USB HD dock. Interestingly the same happens: Some backups work, but then it is stuck at "prepare".
I have a macmini4.1 server. I installed OS X Server (3.1.2) and macports with samba3. Also the second disk in the mac mini server contains a lot of files which are shared by SMB to Windows clients.
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
    Rainer

    Hi, thanks for the updates.
Use Disk Utility to " Verify Disk" of HD2 to check whether it needs to be repaired.
If the verify is ok, perform a " Verify Disk Permissions " to determine if permissions are ok.
The Verifications will not make any changes to HD2
The lockup may be due to a corruption of HD2.   Is HD2 the only copy of the files?
    Verify Disk:
It says "The Volume ... is apparently ok" (original German message: "Das Volume „Macintosh HD2“ ist anscheinend in Ordnung.")
The button "Zugriffsrechte des Volumes überprüfen" is grayed out. (I assume this is the one which would be "Verify Disk Permissions")
The files from HD2 are still available in my FreeBSD server. The files there are not updated currently, we were working on the new HD2 disk so far. Also I assume that from the previously working Time Capsule backup they should still be on the Time Capsule. So currently I have two backups and an older "mirror".
I was hoping at first that I simply do some clickety-click in OS X Server's file sharing to turn the mac mini into our new server. However, Apple's samba leads to broken files, disconnects and lots of other issues. So I installed samba3 from macports and disabled SMB on the max mini. I wonder whether macports or Apple's samba messed with some files.
The access rights on the file server disk are not relevant. This server is only used by me and my wife in our little IT business, so I can set each and every file and directory to a new owner etc. I assume that there are more things than only chmod and chown on Mavericks. How would I recursively set owner and rights including access control and maybe other things I do not yet know? (certainly more than "chown -R ..." :-) )
The remaining text deals with spotlight related log entries:
    These are the mds entries:

  • [b] There were errors installing software [-b]  BomFatalError

I recently ran Software Updater... from OS 10.4.8 to 10.4.9
    Background:
My powerbook G4 started to crash regularly after update to iTunes 7.1.1 and OS 10.4.9 (2 days ago). Lower memory slot (SODIMM0/J25LOWER) no longer recognizes any memory modules in lower slot, since update. (Perhaps logic board is fried?) I ran Diskwarrior; Disk Utility and TechTool Pro 4. Only minor repairs to Disk Permissions. Now Safari, Mail, VirusBarrier, and other applications refuse to open. Clicking F12 for Dashboard widgets is scarey... Widgets disappeared before my eyes.
I since have tried to do a "Archive and Install" of OS 10.4 from the original Tiger Disk. After running through 85% or more of progress, I get message:
    Please try again
    Install Log states:
Date: Time localhost:BomFatalError - cpio read error: bad file format
Date: Time localhost:Install failed: Some files for Essentials may not have been written correctly.
On subsequent attempts to reinstall (Archive and Install), the Preserve User Settings box is dimmed. And Installer indicates there were (again) errors installing.
I can reboot from either and emergency external disk (edisk using minimum OS X software 10.4.5), or by using the Tiger Installation disk.
Now when booting from external disk; there are dozens of odd named folders on my internal hard drive "var"; "etc", "OSInstall.mpkg.93E2bJXo", and more. I'm afraid to do a clean install at this point... (I'm afraid I'll losse my preferences, and misc application files) -- it took me 2 days to reinstall OS X, and all my software, updates and settings a month ago when the internal drive was replaced due to a savage virus called 'OSX.Exploit.Meta_Data.B'
    My Questions:
    What exactly is a "BomFatalError"?
Is there anyway to reinstall Tiger, short of a clean install?
Could the erratic behavior of my powerbook be caused only by a few corrupted system files, or is the potentially damaged logic board a greater culprit?
PS: S.M.A.R.T. status of hard drive is 'verified', so don't believe new drive is at fault. Besides no errors found with Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, or TechTool Pro.
"Terminal Window states "Welcome to Darwin!"
    Yours thoughts greatly appeciated!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.5 Ghz/1.5GB RAM/120GB drive+ext HD

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Some but not all 1.5 Ghz Powerbooks are covered by a lower RAM slot repair program which does not require AppleCare for a free repair:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173
I would investigate that possibility first. If out of AppleCare or the exchange program, these places can usually repair it out of warranty for less than Apple:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
A BOM Fatal error usually has to do with the archiving software used to extract the archive files used to make the software installer.
Mac OS X does not have a clean install per say, and this user tip of mine explains that:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
And no you can't reinstall except restoring from backup after an erase and install and upgrading via the combo update. Here's my upgrade FAQ and backup FAQ which should help you once your RAM is fixed*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Virus Barrier may be the problem.
Using the wrong Techtool Pro or Disk Warrior can also be a problem as my safe utilities FAQ* explains:
