Linux J2SE 1.5.0 install w/o graphical interface

Here's a special situation from the geniuses at Sun.
1. Bundle NetBeans for the J2SE. Never mind that people may want a 'server' installation.
2. So, I try to run it with the installer with the -console option on Linux (Fedora Core 4):
$ ./jdk-1_5_0_04-nb-4_1-linux.bin -console
The wizard cannot continue because of the following error: Invalid command line option:
console is not supported (1001) (403)
Brilliant! So anyone have any ideas on how I can install J2SE 1.5 on a server that has no graphical installation?

I'm sorry, i think your attitude problem has got the better of your judgement.
I followed Fedora's specific installation instructions, but ran into some of the various problems people have been experiencing with JDK on FC4. If you're unfamilier with typical JDK problems just do a google search...

  • Arch linux doesn't boot after installing AMD ATI Catalyst

I have a laptop which has a integrated graphic card intel 4th generation (4600) and an AMD ATI R9 m265x (hybrid Intel/AMD graphics card) so I have just installed AMD ATI Catalyst proprietary ones by following
    AMD Catalyst ArchWiki.
I have used "Installing from the unofficial repository" method so in my pacman.conf I have added below entry for [catalyst-stable]:
    [catalyst-stable]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://70.239.162.206/catalyst-mirror/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/catalyst/$arch
Then I have update pacman's database and install below packages:
    catalyst-hook
    catalyst-utils-pxp
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp
(No need to install catalyst-total-pxp as I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp)
After installing it, I have configured the driver, configuring X using below command:
    # aticonfig --initial
In order to use PowerXpress support I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp package plus additional lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp.
To perform a switch into Intel's IGP I have also installed the mesa-libgl  package and Intel's drivers: xf86-video-intel  and intel-dri .
I have enable the automatic update by enabling the catalyst-hook.service with below commands since it automatically rebuilds the fglrx modules while the system shuts down or reboots (so I haven't to do it manually each time kernel is updated using Catalyst-generator):
    # systemctl enable catalyst-hook
    # systemctl start catalyst-hook
And finally I have blacklisted radeon module by creating "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted.conf" file which content is:
    blacklist radeon
and also I have ensured that fglrx line is added in "/etc/modules-load.d/Catalyst.conf" file.
To avoid problems, I have rebuilt the fglrx module by doing (I know it is not necessary as it is done by catalyst-hook):
    catalyst_build_module all
Once I reboot, arch linux does not boot. Last lines printed out are below and then it freezes:
Starting temp files linker to catalyst...
    Starting Catalyst event Daemon...
[ OK ] Started Catalyst event Daemon
Starting Catalyst's fglrx kernel' module builder...
[ OK ] Started temp files linker for catalyst.
[ OK ] Started Catalyst's fglrx kernel' modue builder.
[ OK ] Started gnome Display manager.
[ OK ] Started Network manager.
    [ OK ] Reached target Multi-User system.
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
[ OK ] Reached target Network.
I have tried to put nomodeset as a kernel parameter but it does not work. Also, after reading ArchWiki, I have noticed that it is recommended to don't do this as I am using catalyst-utils-pxp because intel driver needs it so I have removed nomodeset parameter from kernel but It continues not working.
    Any ideas?
    Package versions:
    Kernel version 3.17.6-1-ARCH
    catalyst-hook 14.12-1
    catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.99.916-3

FInally I managed to boot arch linux.
    I had to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16.2.901-1 to 1.15.2-1.
It seems there is a problem with Catalyst 14.12-1 and xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1.
Also I had to replace desktop manager from gdm to lightdm as gdm raises segmentation faults using xorg-server versions 1.16.2.901-1 and 1.15.2-1.
Finally I had to add an entry in pacman.conf:
    [xorg115]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg115/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/xorg115/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/xorg115/$arch
    Then performs following actions:
    1)  # pacman -Syuu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils-pxp
    2) Uninstall all the packages xf86* such as xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev,  xf86-input-synaptics, etc.
    3) Install the packages uninstalled in step 2 and install them again using xorg115 repo, for example, # pacman -S xorg115/xf86-video-intel xorg115/xf86-input-evdev xorg115/xf86-input-synaptics
I have put a comment here.

  • Oracle Linux 5.10 32 bit install, X server won't start.

Hello Everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful day.
I just installed Oracle Linux 5.10 32 bit on a older windows pc that has 32 bit architecture. When I reboot it, it comes up and says "Failed to start the X Server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
When ever it probes for the video card, its fails then reboots to this every time.
What do I need to do at this point?

    I agree with Dude.
Oracle Linux is a server distro. You are installing it on a client platform. You are expecting it to support client hardware and have, by default, the required drivers on hand to support that client hardware.
I would think that the failure here is on your part, and not on Oracle Linux's part.
Why are you not using Ubuntu instead? It is one of the most widely used Linux desktop clients, and has out-of-the-box support for an extensive range of client hardware (from h/w acceleration support for video adapters, to supporting video/web cams. touch pads, WiFi chipsets, etc).
If you want to test drive Oracle Linux as a server platform on client hardware, consider virtualisation (like free VirtualBox).

I'm a linux user (mint 9) and installed FF4. When I try to bookmark a new page it doesn't give the Usual dialog to add the bookmark- it gives an empty shell of a small window that should be there. this shall seems to point at the little star, but it's totally empty.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

You need to run the i586 installer on a 32-bit machine. It won't work on a 64-bit machine.
If you want to install on a 64-bit machine then you need the 64-bit installer.

You cannot use a Windows machine.
No idea if this will work because you have/had Ubuntu installed - hit Command + Option + R keys while restarting/booting up. Once in the Utilities, make sure the drive is formatted correctly and erase it, then reinstall the OS.

  • TS3824 How can we install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?

How can I install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0, if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?  My computer has 5 vertical purple lines against white screen at startup before the Apple logo appears and the spinning gear...then everything disappears and the screen hangs on the white screen.  I have tried unplugging and removing all my peripherals and the COMMAND, OPTION, P & R set of keys and still nothing.  I have tried COMMAND C to start up from cd and it only tells me to turn off the computer and turn it back on.  I found information on Apple's Support pages regarding the iMac Graphics Firmware Update but I am unable to download and install if I can't get to the Apple menu.  Can anyone help?

You may have hardware problem, I think a visit to your local Apple Store or AASP is in order.

    1) Right click on computer
    2) Click on manage
    3) In left panel select device manager.
    4) Find your graphics controller (Mostly found in display adapter)and right click on it and choose option update driver software.(You need to find your graphics controller yourself because it was diferrent for diferrent models i.e. I have Intel(R)HD Graphics in display adaptars)
5)If this was doesnt fix your problem then try Intel driver updater  or Driver navigator tool

If I remove the link, the browser starts working again (without java).

I am using Mandriva Linux now.
But I am using Firefox 3.6.8, but I cannot install java plugin in it.
Can anyone please help me how to install it?

The plugins folder in the Firefox installation folder doesn't exist by default. There is no default plugin in Firefox 4, so that folder would be empty and in thus not included. If you want to use that location then you need to create a plugins folder.
    Did you try /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins ?

    Hi Allen,
Well, RH9 is not a supported platform and has therefore received very
limited or no testing whatsoever, but JRockit should not crash on it...
To begin with, you can try a manual installation by doing a manual
    $unzip <jrockit-installer>.bin
    $unzip <jrockit-payload>.zip
to get the files and copy/move them wherever you want them installed.
You can also try different releases of JRockit, such as 1.4.2_04 or the
new 1.5.0 release if they work better.
The dump indicates that there might be a problem with glibc on your
machine. This problem has been observed to be triggered by the installation
and activation of the 'prelink' feature on some distros but can also be
    caused
by other things such as an too old version of glibc.
The closest info I can find on supported versions of the kernel and glibc
    that
might match RH9 is for JRockit 1.4.2_05 on RHEL3.0-i686 which has
been verified with QU3 with kernel-2.4.21-20 and glibc-2.3.2-95.27.
Regarding prelink, you can check whether prelink is installed by
"rpm -qa | grep prelink", and if it is installed also check the top of
/etc/sysconfig/prelink to see if it is actually enabled or not.

    Hi Robert/Steffan,
I read the thread re: Null pointer exception in native code.
It seems I have the same issue. I can't install the latest jrockit on
RedHat 9. Are these issues the same? Is there a fix coming? I don't know
what 'prelink' is and 'man prelink' produces nothing...
    TIA,
