Linux Nautilus as spatial file manager?

I've been intrigued by the Linux based file manager known as Nautilus ever since I read about it going to a true spatial style file/folder/window metaphor. As far as I can tell, it behaves almost exactly like the Classic MacOS Finder, right down to folder icons greying out as they open in new windows, relentless window/folder view state retention...even keyboard shortcuts. There's a great article over at Arstechnica describing it...
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/004/software/gnome-2.6/gnome-2.6-2.html
My question is, do you suppose it's possible to run the Nautilus file manager app via VMware/Parallels virtualization? Mind you, I'm not looking to abandon the Mac OS. Just considering file manager options since the Finder has become so squirrelly. Have looked at the Finder alts (Path Finder, etc...), but they're all just variations on the browser style Finder.
Thoughts?

  • Using nautilus as a file manager in xfce

I decided to use nautilus as file manager in XFCE because I'm having some issues with thunar (slow mounting of removable drives etc.). I've assigned a keyboard shortcut to launch this command "nautilus --browser --no-desktop". The first time I run it everything works as intended, but when I press the keyboard shorcut second time 5 nautilus windows open and nautilus replaces thunar on the desktop (switches to the background used in gnome, raplaces the xfce right click menu with the gnome one, etc.). I am truly confused with this. Anyone has any idea what could be casing this behaviour?

  • Set nautilus as default file manager in kde?

I would give kde a good chance, but I have several issues with konqueror. Is it possible to set nautilus as the default file manager in kde? I have started nautilus from kde before.
    Is this possible?

    OK then. Install nautilus.
control center > file associations > inode > directory [ then add: "nautilus --no-desktop" ] (make sure it's primary in the list)
You'll not be able to open KIO slaves such as media:// with nautilus though. Maybe you should create launchers on the desktop running "nautilus --no-desktop computer://" etc?
There are some other cosmetic changes you can do as well, such as installing gnome-volume-manager, gnome-settings-dameon, gnome-control-center etc.
Another way is just to add "nautilus --no-desktop" as default application for inode > directory, but don't add it as *primary*, but secondary application, so you can right click and choose "open with nautilus" on the desktop/konqueror.
I've successfully run a complete nautilus desktop replacing konqueror as root window and file manager, and it works really good actually.
I did uncheck "icons on desktop" and disabled wallpaper in kcontrol.
Had to disable "hal backend" in kde to let gnome-volume-manager take care of hal mounts; "HalBackendEnabled=false" in .kde/share/config/mediamanagerrc
Then i had to run "gnome-settings-daemon &" in .kde/Autostart/startup (this file should be executable, as usual) (nautilus itself is a GUI application and will survive  the next session on it's own, because of KDE session managment)
I took the easy route and installed the whole "gnome" metapackage instead of selective packages though.
The only problem was that kedit.desktop didn't want to start as default application for say, text files, but i had to enter kedit manually in that box you get during "open with dialog".
    I bastardized KDE, i know
    It was worth it! hehe
BTW dolphin/d3lphin is really good too, as lucke pointed out.

  • Change default file manager in linux

After upgrading to Firefox 10.0 for Linux "Open containing folder" in downloads opens in nautilus and not my default file manager.
I'm not finding how to change this behavior.

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • Nautilus File Manager- does not look inside files (grep)!

    Hi,
My company is moving me over from Windows XP to a new T420 laptop running Red Hat linux.
As I do support, I have a long list of  documentation articles in a directory to do my job, and on the Windows side I can just search through the files for phrases or words to bring up information on whatever topic.
Unfortunately with Nautilus File Manager, the search 'binoculars' on the taskbar only searches through the names of the files, which is kind of useless for what I am needing.
Obviously Linux can handle grep.   Is there a way you can configure Nautilus to actually look within the files, add an icon, etc?   I don't see anything in personalization or configurable.
I've looked online for quite some time and am not finding anything, thanks much!

  • Changing Default file manager Nautilus to Thunar

I am running Gnome, but want Thunar as my default file manager. Last time I did this my desktop froze. I did it with some Ubuntu script https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DefaultFileManager. Is there someway I can do this without my desktop freezing?

    Maybe these methods:
    http://www.ubuntugeek.com/switch-to-a-l … nager.html
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=692238 (just replace pcmanfm with thunar)

  • Thunar as default file manager

Hi, i've installed today kdemod and now the default file manager in gnome is konqueror. I used thunar and i want to put it back to default file manager. I've found this tuturial but i can't execute the command sudo. i've already add my user trought visudo but i doesn't apear on /etc/sudoers so when i try to run sudo when it asks me the password even if I put the root password it doesn't allow me to execute the command.. Any sugestion to solve the problems?? I really want to get back thunar to default manager.
    cumps

What is your user name and the output of cat /etc/sudoers ?
With sudo you should use your user password not your root password
You can also use the "su" command built-in linux,
typing "su" or "su root" prompt a root password query dialog and then gives you a root terminal
sudo is a mean to gain root privilege that's all, you can follow the tuto without it.
Edit : I haven't see that actually sudo is called in the scripts
you can edit the script removing calls to sudo. and run them as root
the part with aptitude is ubuntu specific, it's their package manager like pacman is ours
    so adapt the command accordingly
Also maybe archlinux doesn't put gnome .desktop like ubuntu
use the locate command to find it
example "locate nautilus" or "locate nautilus |grep /usr/share" (to limit the result to /usr/share if you have too much result)
if you had just installed something and want to look for it don't forget to run "updatedb" beforehand

  • A better file manager?

Is there a better file manager for someone going from the Windows or Gnome Linux world on OS X?
I am looking for something like Windows Explorer or Nautilus. Both of these offer a left side panel that expands to a tree view of the filesystem, and a right panel showing the contents of the current folder.

If you are familiar with Linux, you can use Apple's X11 (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/) and Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/) to install GNOME or another more familiar desktop environment.
You may also find helpful resources at Darwin Ports via opendarwin.org (http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/).

  • Best File Manager For Really Large Folders

I have a folder with 397GB of music. None of the music players like it much. Rhythmbox and Banshee either wont run or are so slow they're not useable.
I have been using Xmms to play, which is great. Nautilus is way to slow and MC doesn't quite have the features I want.
What file manager would you recommend for really big folders?

I've used about everything there is. Amarok was nice for a while, but there were a ton of little annoyances that added up and eventually I was too frustrated to keep using it. I have settled on XMMS2 + gxmms2 + xmms2-scrobbler. It's been good to me.
Ideally, foobar2000 would be ported to Linux. There is nothing like it.
I also prefer PCManFM as a file manager. Dolphin and Thunar are OK. but PCManFM is very fast...it's good at dealing with my giant directories with thousands of files in it.
Also, for all that music, what file system do you have it on? I used to keep all my music on an NTFS drive for compatibility but it kept screwing itself up and it was slow, but recently I switched to ReiserFS and I've seen amazing improvements.

  • Ahh ...Entering other partitions trough file-manager [SOLVED]

Hi, I have Ubuntu, Windows and now Arch installed on my pc.
Through Ubuntu I can detect all partitions and write to them. I just go to Computer in the Nautilus file manager and I see the other partitions.
In Arch however my file-manager is pcmanfm and I don't know where the other partitions are located and how I can access them.
Sorry for the silly question but I really don't understand this :s
Is there any special folder in linux for this (excluding /media since I only find my 2 drives (DVD and CD))?

Ok, now I have it mounted. However I copied the whole blender directory to my partition and if I do `ls ...` the files all show up but when I execute it it says `no such file or directory`.
    I had used this command:
    sudo cp -R /media/ubuntu/home/a/blender ~
Correct me if I'm wrong here: you've copied a folder from your ubuntu $HOME into your Arch $HOME, and now you want to execute something in that folder. Are you using the full path to the command? Or have you added the blender folder to your path?
If you think Arch is crazy that's fine - you're entitled to your opinion. Just consider the fact that there are thousands of happy Arch users who disagree with you.

  • Changing the default file manager in XFCE

How would I go about using Nautilus as the default file manager in XFCE instead of Thunar? I know it can be started up with 'nautilus --no-desktop', but how do I make this the default when opening folders from the desktop, menus, etc..?
The main reason I want to do this is because Thunar doesn't seem to remember a folders last setting. For example, there are folders which I would like to permanently view as a list, sorted by date; but there are plenty of other folders where this is not suitable. Nautilus remembers settings for each folder, Thunar doesn't, and it gets annoying changing the view mode each time. Also network browsing is easier in Nautilus, and I also like the way it tells you how fast file transfers are going.
    Thanks very much,

Well, it might be considered a dirty hack but it has worked for me in gnome before so it should also work in xfce.  Just edit the thunar.desktop file in /usr/share/applications and replace the Exec=thunar to Exec=nautilus --no-desktop and save the file.  Then any time thunar is launched, nautilus will be launched instead.
Otherwise, you can edit the menu with the menu editor and change the File manager command and do the same in the panel icon properties.  Both methods will work.

  • How to synchronize File Manager Server when I install Agile on distributed?

Now I will install two File manager Server ,I want to ask what's the method let me synchronize two file manager Server ?
Does the File manager has this mechanism to let the file keep synchronize on two file manager server?
I find a PDF name "Agile PLM Capacity Planning Guid" V 9.3.1 ,it says there are two software can synchronize file manager server , is XXCOPY and RoboCopy, but the two softwares only support Windows . Is there a software support synchronize file manager server on Linux ?

Hi I believe you have the wrong forum.
This forum is for the Agile PLM for Process product suite, not for the Agile A9 suite. For Agile A9 or Primavera questions, you can use Oracle Support, Support Communities, Yahoo Groups for Agile API or WRAU.
This forum is for Agile PLM for Process, which is part of the same Agile family but a different product.
    Thanks.

  • File Manager with tree view

I've been using Cinnamon with the Nemo file manager for a while now but I'm wanting to remove Cinnamon and have only Openbox and Awesome installed. The only thing that's stopping me now is I'm unsure of what to use for a file manager. The feature of Nemo that I really like is the ability to show folders in tree view in the main pane when in detailed list view. I know that most of them probably have the tree feature in a side pane but I want it in the main pane.
I'd like something with as few dependencies as possible since I'm wanting a more minimal approach to my system. Nemo requires Cinnamon, I'm guessing that Nautilus has the feature that I'm looking for as well but that requires Gnome.
Can anyone recommend another file manager with this feature? Or is there any way to install Nemo/Nautilus without their desktop dependencies?

drcouzelis wrote:It doesn't look like Nemo requires Cinnamon. What do you mean?
claire ~ % pacman -Qi nemo
    Name : nemo
    [snip]
Depends On : libexif gvfs dconf desktop-file-utils exempi python2
    cinnamon-desktop gnome-icon-theme libnotify libxml2
    cinnamon-translations
I think this is what is meant.

Not really, since those libraries are required to run the respective file manager.

  • Thunar as default file manager for firefox

    i am using xubuntu 9.04..
I'm using Openbox as windows manager[pure openbox session], it's working great, but i have a problem ...
open containing folder doestnt recognize Thunar as my only file manager, it keeps asking to open with...
    how can fix this problem?
    thank you in advance

I am having a similiar issue... when I hit open folder it pops up sometype of file search program
EDIT: Perhaps this works for you... for some reason it doesn't for me...
    http://rubylution.ping.de/articles/2007 … nder-linux
Basically navigate to about:config and create the following three:
    network.protocol-handler.expose.file = true (Boolean)
    network.protocol-handler.external.file = true (Boolean)
    network.protocol-handler.app.file = /usr/bin/thunar (String)
The program that runs instead of thunar has a title "Find Files" -- I did a quick search of installed programs related to "search" and I only have catfish installed and I know that is not the program... How would I go about determing what this application is or what it is a part of? Is there a way I can click on the program and it output the PID so I can then match it up with the entry in top/htop?
SOLVED : figured it out... it was pcmanfm search program... for some reason it was not opening the folder but instead opening its search program... removing pcmanfm from my system fixed it and now folders are properly opening with thunar
