  • SOLUTION: Press [F2] to Enter Setup does NOT Appear - Lenovo G470

After spending an inordinate amount of time searching the internet about my problem, and then contacting Lenovo (who told me it was hardware and I needed to return all of the laptops I bought), I managed to magically find the solution to my problem.  Since it wasn't documented elsewhere on the internet, I thought I'd create a post for it here.
The problem I was having was that my Lenovo G470 laptop did not display Press F2 to Enter Setup during the boot process, and because of this, no amount of hammering the F2 button would allow access to the BIOS.  I attempted all of the standard fixes, pulled the battery, held power down for 30 seconds, removed the HDD -- nothing would cause this to appear.  Since it was happening on all 3 of the G470s we just purchased, I didn't believe it was hardware.  I reached out to Lenovo Premium Support, and after about 3 minutes of discussion, "Paul" informed me that all three machines were defective and would have to be sent back in for repair, and it would take 4-6 weeks for repair and diagnosis.
As I had been noodling around with the machines for a few days, ONE of the three ended up showing the bios options during the boot process.  At that point, I had been hitting just about every single key on the keyboard during the boot process, so I couldn't identify what it was that I did that caused the options to appear.  A little more troubleshooting and I figured it out:
Lenovo G470 machines equipped with the EFI bios do NOT by default show the Press F2 to enter Setup.  The only way to make this appear is to hold the "B" key on the keyboard during power-on.  Once you've done that, the options to enter setup will appear and they will reappear at every boot (matter of fact, I've been unable to find a way to make them go away again, no matter what I hold during bootup).
So, if you find yourself with a G470 and you can't enter the bios and F2 doesn't work -- hold the B key during boot.  The options should appear and you should be able to gain entry into the BIOS.

    tjefferies,
Wow!  Thanks for sharing this - will be sure to share with support.   We really appreciate your discovery and sharing this with the community.   I'm not sure why they quoted 4-6 weeks or repair.  Perhaps 4-6 days, counting shipping, but not weeks.  Will address that as well.
Do you happen to have your service case number #? WNxxxxxx ?   If so, could you send to me via PM ?
    Many thanks!

  • Lenovo g470 shutdown problems (in intervals of 10-12 days)

Hi everyone, I'm from Argentina, so I apologize for my english.
My problem with Lenovo G470 is this: every 10, 12 days it shutdowns and can't use it for a time. I'm doing anything (listening to music, writting a text, etc) or sometimes I'm afk and just doing nothing and it happens anyway. And then, for a time it's impossible to start windows. I turn on the laptop and the Lenovo logo appears, but then just shuts down.
Maybe 4-5 hours later it starts to work ok again. Im not sure aboout this because when this happen i usually leave it there and come back the next day.
I've been reading a lot of posts in this forum about similar problems, but I couldn't find this exact same problem that I have.
Also, this happens on battery or plugged in. Is the same. Another weird thing that occurs sometimes is that when I'm using it on battery and I turn it off, the laptop shutdown, but the on/off button light doesn't turns off. I need to plug it in to solve this.
I don't know if could be related, but I replaced the W7 home basic with the ultimate version. While I had it with home basic this didn't happened, but it was a short time (2 days) so I couldn't determine if this is related. Anyway I have the recovery CDs if a probable solution would be that.
I've read here about solutions like flashing the bios. I didn't do it but I could try it if you think it could work. I don't know if there are new updates. The truth is I'm a total newbie on flashing the bios.
In conclusion, any help you could give me will be appreciate. I'm in the Lost island right now. I can't understand why this happens.
So, thanks for your help and again, sorry for my english.
    * I didn't take it to the support because this is kind of random and I really need my laptop.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that when this happens, I can't turn on the laptop with the on/off button. But if I press space and escape it turns on again, and fails again of course.
    Solved!

    Dear Members,
    Good Day!
Over the past few days, I have being getting warning messages in Intel Raipd storage technology app that " Disk on Port 0: At risk"
I have ran a hardware scan on my Hard disk and have noticed few of the tests getting failed, I  have gone through many of  posts in this fourms and understood that, my HDD is having some problem and it may crash any time.
I have taken back up of my factory default recovery disks in to DVD's.  However I would like get clarified on  few things related to replacing the existing HDD and setting up windows 7 in my new HDD.
    1) After replacing my OLD HDD , In my new hard disk do I need to create the C disk  with same size as that of OLD HDD for the OKR to work and restore everything properly.
    2)  Will the one key recovery feature  work with my new HDD as well? If not , what should I do make it work?
    3) Will the OEM parition( having factory default backup )be automatically created in new HDD ?
Please find the Hardware sacn result below from Lenovo solution center.

  • Lenovo G470 ram upgrade should i choose 8GB or 16 GB?

I am planning to upgrade the 4GB ram on my G470 win 7 64 bit home premium laptop. Should i choose 8gb or 16gb? Regards

    hi pilot911,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Looking at page 27 of the HMM, the G470 can take up to:
    DDR3-1066/1333MHz SODIMM socket x 2 (max 4GB per slot).
If you're planning to max it out then you will need a 4GBx2 (8GB kit). If you already have a single 4GB stick though then you just need to get another 4GB.

  • Lenovo G470 Having Booting Problems.

My laptop is having problems while booting up occasionally where it boots up until the mouse pointer gets dispalyed, nothing else, just the mouse pointer at the center of the screen and nothing else. I have to then shutdown the laptop by holding the power button down till it shutsdown then turn it on again in order to use my laptop. This happens often after I shutdown the laptop, but NOT when I restart, or boot from hibernation. I haven't noticed any BSODs. This problem has been there since I bought the laptop. I tried updating the drivers and the BIOS and I used the DriverEasy software also to update the drivers. Yet the problem continues.
    Any solutions?

  • Linux Mint making deals with OEMs... would love this to occur with Lenovo!

I saw a headline today: "Linux Mint Forges New Deals with OEMs".  Mint tends to work pretty well with Lenovo hardware already.  Wouldn't it be great it Lenovo were to be one of them?   hint... hint...
As a supporter of Linux and a supporter of Lenovo, this would be very exciting news.
