  • Instant Client for Linux for SPARC 64?

I'm running Linux on SPARC64 and I would like to compile PHP with the OCI module... BUT I cannot.
I either run in to TLS problems (which get fixed with LD_PRELOAD=libclntsh.so ) or I run in to missing Sun libraries (as expected, but I found no ports) like libkstats.
Is it possible to do what I want to do? I have thought about using the PHP and JavaBridge, but that doesn't seem to mean I don't have to use OCI libraries (libclntsh and etc)... and may be a huge performance hit (two interpreted languages? UGH!)
    Ideas?

just curious... which distro are you running on SPARC 64??? :)

  • Howto uninstall Linux for Sparc

I'm trying to install Solaris 8 on an Ultra 5 and it gives me an error after trying to create the swap space early in the install process. I think it's probably because I have Sparc Linux on the system and SILO is installed. Has anyone encountered this and knows how to fix it?
    Thanks!

In case anyone runs into this problem, I researched it and ended up using format to modify each of the partition slices under the partition menu in format. This forced it to label the disk and partitions and then the installer was able to work with the disk.

  • Oracle Linux on Sparc

Larry announced a while back (Sparc system launch in 2010) the possibility of Oracle (Enterprise) Linux being available on Sparc.
Anything happening in this regard, or not?
I've been asked to look at running Linux on an old Sunfire v890 (<i>sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V890</i>). I've found a Debian 6.06 release for Sparc, but would like to run a RHEL-based distro (as we do on all our servers - the only Debian around here is Ubuntu on my office desktop).
Should I plod ahead with that Debian distro? Are there better distros for Sparc? Or is this idea of running Linux on V890 a terrible one? (Solaris is not an option due to cost implications that management consider unwarranted for using a mothballed server for some basic Oracle RDBMS development)
Comments and suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Reading about ARM on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture I find a lot of interesting information, but I don't see much groundbreaking, though I must admit that I'm not a CPU engineer or have lots in-depth knowledge about it.
Am I a RISC fan? Well, I like good hardware. And I like to test hardware to see what performance is possible, storage systems in particular.
Personally I regret the loss of the Alpha chip and the loss of the Apple PowerPC. I had some interesting talks with a couple of HP engineers 10 years ago, complaining about the Alpha chip being superior to the IA-64 technology. I have forgotten the details. What I know is that video compressing tasks on my 8 year old PowerMac quad-core G5 with 4 x 2.5 GHz PPC 604e is noticeably faster than doing the same job on my Mac Pro 2009 with dual quad-core 2.3 GHz Intel Nehalem with all the latest and greatest.
Regarding RISC based and CISC based compilers. I think the advantage of CISC lies in simplicity for the programmer. I remember Apple developer guidelines from the early 90's to rely on system libraries residing in ROM. It had its advantages in terms of programming ergonomics, but caused more complexity and overhead in the CPU itself and thus making programs less efficient. I think the same applies to CISC. RISC is less efficient in terms of coding, but more CPU efficient, though shifting more work to the compiler. CISC versus RISC compiling was a valid argument in the past, but does it still apply?
Somewhere I read about the huge progress of the x86_64 architecture, which claims to outperform any existing RISC architecture, but I have not been able to experience that in practice. My experience with replacing old legacy RISC server systems is that it requires 4 times the hardware. But of course it is impossible to seriously compare old with new or different systems.
Looking forward by looking back, the best way to predict the future is to invent it. I wonder if some of the past developments are really coincidence. How does my future look and why I still have plans? ;-)

  • Arch linux for Sparc Ultra2

I have flat rate adsl2 24/7 and a sparc ultra 2 idle connected, I can trust some people on it to port all arch PKGBUILD,
    18Gb hard disk scsi3 15000 rpm 1280Mb rom 2 300Mhz CPUs.
I can make Arch base boot on it in a couple of weeks. Anybody with me?

I have an ss10 I can test/compile(once the port is ready) on
I would also point out that debian was compiling 32bit userland for all sparcs with some exceptions that saw speedups like the kernel so supporting older 32bit sparcs should be an added bonus
I have been trying to get T2 SDE (it just spits out binary packages you can build a custom distro with... supposedly supports sparc32) to build a bootstrap environment but the cross compiler build is broken and I can't figure out how to get on the mailing list to ask for help I may email the main dev directly. T2 should also be able to create bootable install images to get us started once the bugs are cleaned up. Gentoo has dropped sparc32 support which I don't really understand except that the machines were slow they are still pretty neat and would make decent personal servers etc.
I think it would be nice to get a single boot image ready and have 64bit additional repos for those that can run them.
Anybody could fix the T2 GCC compiler that would be GREAT Glibc and quite a few other packages needed for the cross compiler work however it fails here

  • Arch linux for SPARC, is there still any activity?

    Hello all,
I just got my hands on some sparc servers and I'd love to put arch linux on there.
I found a wiki-page about SPARCH, but the last real edit is over 2 years ago, and the repository is down.
Is anyone still interested in this / working on this?
    Ward

    Ok, so Dave replied.
It's been a while since he worked with the SPARC version, and can't find the files anymore.
However, he does have some very useful basic information regarding what the basic problems with the porting process were, the framework he used (Cross-LFS; http://trac.cross-lfs.org/) and so on. Dave also mentioned, it was far faster to do the compiling on his x86 desktop than the actual SPARC box.
I'm highly motivated in getting something done about porting Arch to SPARC. Haven't done anything quite like this before, but that's not a problem. Lack of time might be though, which is why I'm hereby announcing I'm looking for volunteers to participate in a group effort to get the porting moving along and fully available to the public as soon as possible.
What I can offer is this:
    - Server space from a fast x86_64 Sun Blade (running Arch) to host repositories and possibly do some compiling as well; 1 gbit uplink
    - A Sun Fire V240 with 2 CPUs (1.5 GHz if I remember right) and 4 GB RAM for compiling / testing
    - A plan, lots of ideas, an open mind and skills in areas such as design & co-operation
I would love to get involved in the actual porting myself as well, but as things look at the moment, I will only have the chance to do so occasionally and for short periods of time.
I can and very much wish to participate in designing the whole process though, and the first couple of people I feel the project needs would be designers / project leaders as well. Someone(s) with previous experience in porting any OS to any new architecture would be useful to say the least.
I'm also seriously thinking about kind of combining OpenBSD and / or DragonFly BSD with some parts of Arch. Can't really say which would be the dominating "gene" but Pacman and the rolling release approach are one of the key points of the whole thing. I used OpenBSD for years and loved it for its security and stability, but keeping it up to date and clean (no old libraries around etc.) means you will have to re-install it once a year. I got so tired of that I could simply not go on, and after lots of research ended up with Arch - which I love, apart from the fact that some things keep changing so radically that it's easy to drop out of the smooth upgrade track and get your otherwise super-stable server messed up.
So, this secondary plan of mine has to do with taking the best parts of OpenBSD, DragonFly and Arch, and putting it all together in a way that provides a super-stable, secure and KISS distribution heavily targeted at the server scene, possibly being available as 64-bit only. If it's based on Linux kernel then it will have things such as GRSecurity installed and on by default. Server software packages designed to be chrooted (or at least providing a chrooted version) whenever possible, and so on. Clear, unified way of how the system is configured and how the init works - this is where I'm thinking about the Arch way again. I am leaning towards using the OpenBSD kernel but importing lots of stuff from Arch / Linux.
If anyone's interested in either of these little projects, please pm or e-mail me at jyri (ät) archlinux (punkt) fi

  • Help Using Instant Client ODBC on Linux

I am familiar with using ODBC and visual basic under Windows. I would like to use the Oracle instant client ODBC under Red Hat ES3 within a C or C++ program to access an Oracle database.
Where can I find documentation related to this:
    a) setting up an ODBC connection on Linux
    b) installing the Oracle instant client on Linux
    c) building an application with Oracle instant client ODBC
Am I correct in assuming that any C/C++ ODBC code examples from windows could also be used on Linux.
    Thanks,
    Werner

We are also interested in the very same thing. We are using third party compiler called SIMSCRIPT from CACI which has a module called SDBC for database connectivity. SDBC requires ODBC to be installed/configured. Our application is for Linux, therefore we are interested in using the ODBC driver on Linux clients to connect Oracle database servers on Linux and Sparc. I see the odbc related zip (for 10g) and rpm (for 11g) instant client files on the OTN Instant Client download page. How to install/configure odbc instant client? Is there a document/whitepaper/Metalink Note ?
    Thank you

You can refer to cc man pages. Here is about predefinitions:
    Predefinitions:unix
    sparc (SPARC)
    i386 (x86)
    sun
The above are not predefined in -Xc mode.
These predefinitions are valid in all modes:
    __BUILTIN_VA_ARG_INCR
    __SUNPRO_C=0x590
    __SVR4(SPARC)
    __SunOS(Solaris)
    __SunOS_OSN.N(Solaris)

    __uname -s_uname -r
    __x86_64(x86)
    linux(x86,linux)
The following is predefined in -Xa and -Xt modes only:

  • Recommended file descriptors for Sparc Solaris

I'm moving an app from Linux to Sparc Solaris and the app keeps dying with a
    message of:
    java.net.SocketException: Too many open files.
How many open files should weblogic have on a process level and on a system
wide level? The sparc box has a standard SunOs 5.6 I.E. Solaris.

make it 1024, solaris' max, will save hassles. 'plimit' and 'ulimit' are the commands used to configure fd.

  • I want to run linux directly on ultraSPARC server t4.

I've been used to linux for a long time now and now i need to work with the UltraSPARC t4 server which has solaris on it. So, i am thinking of maybe removing Solaris and running linux directly on the server. But I'm really curious to know about the virtualization technologies that would be available if i run linux directly on the t4 server. And which of them serves better compared with the VM Server for SPARC and containers ? Any help will be appreciated..

While there are versions of Linux for SPARC available, currently none are "qualified" by Oracle. You are certainly free to run any OS that you wish, but running an unqualifed/unsupported OS may prevent us from giving you service in the event you have any issues.
Currently, the Sun System Handbook lists the following OS's as Qualified/Supported.
    Oracle Solaris 11
    Oracle Solaris 10 8/11 Update 10 (U10) - pre-installed
    Oracle Solaris 10 09/10 (U9) plus Oracle Solaris 10 08/11 SPARC Patch Bundle *
    Oracle Solaris 10 10/09 (U8) plus Oracle Solaris 10 08/11 SPARC Patch Bundle *
Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.1
    Electronic Prognostics 1.2
    Oracle Solaris ZFS
Your best best will probably be to run either Oracle VM or Solaris as your Host OS, then run whatever else in VM's.
Specific configuration decisions will be up to you, but feel free to Open a Service Request (SR) if you need more help.

  • How to remove the OpenBoot's entries writen by SuSe linux

I installed SuSe Linux for Sparc to Ultra 10. When I
unloaded linux and re-installed Solaris 8, I found the disk slice0 was masked and could not be recovered.
I am looking for the idea to remove the entries set by
    SuSe.
    Thanks

On Windows, look in C:\ProgramData\Cisco\Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client\Profile. the profile entries should populate that directory.
New connections should add profiles or you can build one manually using the following simple template, substituting your values where I have typed xxxx:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/encoding/">
          xxx
          xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
          SSL
There are a lot more optional entries but that's a bare bones one.

  • Some questions for ressources provisionning.

    Hello people.
I'm currently playing around with LDoms on a new brilliant shiny T5520 and I have some questions about.
My actual configuration is the following:
    - 1 T5520 Server with 32 Gb RAM and a 8 cores 64 threads Niagara T2
    - 4 SAS 143 Gb disks on controller 1.
The disk are mirrored using raidctl in two pairs of raid 1, c1t0d0 and c1t2d0.
The primary OS is installed on c1t0d0 and I plan to use ZFS for creating vdisks LDoms guests on c1t2d0.
I have access to a netapp but only with iscsi and nfs.
    So, the questions:
    - Does it make sense to use ZFS on hard mirrored disks ?
    - Is it best to add the two disks non mirrored to my ZFS pool and backup snapshots on the netapp ?
    - Does my LDoms needs more memory that I planned ? Each guest will have between 2 Gb and 4 Gb for the bigger. I will have, at the beginning 4 or 5 guests for testing / integration, LDAP / DNS services, Licences services, Web Portal, and, maybe, if I could convince my boss a little SPARC Gentoo Linux, just for fun :)
    Thanks :)
PS: Forgive my poor English, I'm a French bas***d guy :)

You mean T5220, great machine anyway :)
    - RAID hardware is supposed to be faster than ZFS, but ZFS offer more functionalities.
    - you need both mirroring and backup, even if nice, ZFS snapshot cannot replace a backup software.
    - Keep a free memory pool not allocated and ready to increase the RAM size of a LDOM (rebooting the LDOM will be necessary). And hum... use it to play with linux for sparcs :-)

  • Troubles installing a 1.4.2 on mandrake

I'm getting a weird error when trying to open the .bin file... it says the following to me "j2eesdk-1_4-linux.bin
j2eesdk-1_4-linux.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" ... any idea why it's doing this? I'm in the right directory and i chmod 700 the .bin file and tried ./.... to open it... not working.. please help...

First of all, the distribution you are currently trying to install is J2EE and not J2SE. If you intended to install J2SE 1.4.2 only you will have to download standalone J2SE from here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
Scroll down to the section with title "Download J2SE v 1.4.2_04 " and select "32-bit/64-bit for Windows/Linux/Solaris SPARC SDK"
If you did want to install J2EE (which contains bundled J2SE 1.4.2) please check this thread for workaround for your issues:

  • Bug:  Fatal error in iropt

    Hi,
While compiling our code Octopus, I found a bug in the sun studio express fortran compiler (in x86 linux and sparc solaris). I made a bug report, but in that moment I wasn't able to reduce the file to a single file and in the bug report and I gave a pointer to our svn repository.
Now I was able to reduce the bug to a single subroutine and I would like to modify the report, but I couldn't find how to do it. My Review ID is 944794. Shall I submit a new bug report? As I will commit a workaround, my report will not be valid.
In any case I post here the code that triggers the bug, it appears when optimizations level is 3 or greater. The error is:
    iropt: ../src/sr.c:8153: af_create_ir_node: Assertion `af->type == AF_NODE' failed.

By the way, I am quite impressed with the perfomance of the sun studio compiler. I made some preliminary tests in x86 and for our code it seems to be faster than any other compiler.
