Linux on the Dell Latitude E6400

Hi,
as there are probably more people than me out there using this laptop i thought it might be a good idea to collect problems/workarounds etc in a nice thread.
For my old Inspiron 6000 there used to be such a thread on the gentoo forums and it was really a great help to get things working.
(I am using the nvidia version, so if there are some problems with the intel graphics please post, so that we can collect them :-))
So lets get to it.
Known Problems:
Video
quick seems to have problems with the intel video, so if anyone has the intel version and has everything running, please help us out
Input
Q: The dualpoint produces erratic movement when eg touching the touchpad while using the trackpoint.
A: There is a patch at the lkml, it implements the 9 byte package format and seems to fix the issues for me[0]. Compiles against 2.6.27-29
Q: Pointstick settings, scrolling with 3rd mouse button
A: add the following to an appropriate hal fdi file
<match key="info.product" string="DualPoint Stick">
<merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheel" type="string">true</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelButton" type="string">2</merge>
<merge key="input.x11_options.EmulateWheelTimeout" type="string">200</merge>
</match>

As of 2.6.29-rc7 : add the following line to eg /etc/modprobe.d/options to make everything work
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
If you don't want to upgrade your kernel: have a look here
Q: The Internal mic doesn't work.
A: in the playback tab of alsamixer set 'input source' to 'digital'
in the capture tab enable one of the capture lines and set the apropriate 'input source' to 'front mic'
Q: The in/out jacks of the dock don't work
A: use import0/import1 from the capture tab of alsamixer to get the output of front/headphone cloned to the dock output,
ex: you want to have output only from the dock: mute front, enable headphone, enable mixer1
misc
Q: Bluetooth - Dell Wireless 370 isn`t working.
A:
$ pacman -S bluez
$ /etc/rc.d/bluetooth start
#make sure bluetooth led shine
$ hid2hci
$ hcitools dev
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bluetooth
These are all problems i've had so far, if you encountered others or have solutions, please share them :-)

Okay, maybe I'm too naive, but I'm using Arch on a Dell Latitude D620 which is the pre-predecessor of the E6400, so this might help you as well.
My mic didn't work at first either, but I just went to my KDE 4.2 Mixer --> configure channels and ticked the checkbox "Capture" and "Digital". Then back in the mixer interface I chose "front mic" from the input source dropdown menu and ticked the "Capture" checkbox.
These might help you as well when it comes to sound:
http://ubuntu-utah.ubuntuforums.org/sho … p?t=616845
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51246
In my /etc/rc.conf the modules look like this:
MODULES=(slhc tg3 snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel
soundcore !pcspkr !snd_pcsp !bcm43xx ndiswrapper)
That worked for me under KDE 4.2. From your post I realize that you're probably a far more experienced user than I am, but maybe my noobish tipps might help you anyway (if you're using KDE 4). Sometimes it's the small things...
Take care,

  • Connect Dell Latitude e6400 to iMac 27" with Displayport to Thunderbolt

    Hi,
is it possible to connect my Dell Latitude e6400 via Displayport to the Thunderbolt input on the latest iMac and unse the iMac as an external Display for the Dell Laptop?
    Best regards.
    Michael

Only other computer with Thunderbolt can use the 2011 iMacs as a display.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
Displayport to Thunderbolt is not supported.
    Sorry

  • Dell Latitude E6400 won't recognize 1600-900 dpi settings.

Just bought a new HP W2071d 20" monitor and installed the driver on my Dell E6400 laptop.  Then, when restarting the monitor shows 1280 X 768 as the recommended resolution and will not let you set it higher.   Do I have a defective monitor?  Why isn't the driver allowing the higher native monitor resolution?
I have tried just about everything including downloading and installing the newest Windows 7 drivers from HP.

The Laptop won't recognize the native resolution of the monitor no matter if I remove the HP furnished drivers or not.  I'm going to attach the monitor to my desktop and see what happens.  If the desktop recognizes the monitor and will allow 1600X900 resolution (It's a 1 year old Gateway desktop) then I will suspect some Dell issues.  If it won't recognize the 1600X900 resolution I will think the monitor is faulty.  The Dell detects the monitor but, again, won't allow the resolution it should.

I really want to get this laptop soon, but I'll be so irritated if I tried to install arch on it and it doesn't work. Thank you for your help.

Well, from the 'first look' reviews (there's a first look review dated today!), it seems to be a brand new model, which means there won't be many folks who have tested it. It depends on what you mean by 'work' as well. Arch is almost sure to install a basic system, but things like suspending, cpu speed changes, and wifi usually take some work on most distros in my experience. One thing to do is to google for some of the components to see if linux users have had success. Two important ones are the video card and the wireless card. If those look good, then give it a try. You might need to work at it a bit, but I usually manage with help from the forums You could even write up your experience on a wiki so that others can benefit from your experience...

Video driver in the image was originally out of date, changed the driver to the latest and greatest available straight from Intel for the Intel HD 3000 graphics card and this error still appears.  Driver 9.17.10.3517 exceeds the minimum requirement
for Lync 2013.  The faulting module is related to the graphics driver, but reinstalling does nothing, uninstalling and then reinstalling does nothing, it cannot further be upgraded.  This same error affects all the Dell latitude e6520's.  It
also only occurs in Windows 8.1.  The windows 7 image using the exact same driver version (both the outdated driver and latest driver) works just fine with Lync 2013.
Running Lync with administrative permissions does nothing, disabling hardware acceleration did nothing.  None of our laptops come with the bluetooth adapter, and also updated all other drivers such as chipset and soundcard.  Error occurs on the
RTM version of Lync, and Lync with SP1 fully updated.  The rest of Office 2013 works fine.  I am currently at a loss here short of telling the help desk to not image E6520's with Windows 8.1 because Lync 2013 doesn't work on it.  But there has
to be a reason for it.  Calling out for some suggestions here.
    Thanks!

We also have the same issue with Dell E6420 running Windows 8.1. Lync application does not respond after start-up. Did you try looking for the error file under
    C:\users\username\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\Reportarchive
it should create file like AppHang_lync.exe_some numbers. search for the latest one.
Interesting, I don't have any 6420's handy but figured the issue would exist on those also.  I looked up the location you mention and see many crash logs for Lync.  Not really sure what the error is, just says it stopped working.

  • Can I hook up my Dell Latitude for using iMac as display?

the Dell has VGA & HDMI so I wonder if it will work using a Moshi Mini DisplayPort to HDMI-adapter or similar?

If I understood you, you want to use your iMac as a display for the Dell Latitude.
See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt ports can be used as a display, and Apple says that this feature works only for other Macs.
That's not exact and that's not the truth because an iMac can be used as a display for PCs, but the PC must have a DisplayPort or a Thunderbolt port. If your PC hasn't got DisplayPort, you can't use the iMac as a display

  • Dell Latitude C600

Has anyone had success with the Dell Latitude C600?
This could be a bug in Arch itself but at boot say every 5 boots (this number will vary greatly but happens often enough to be annoying and worrying) it will freeze at the prompt saying something about udev uevents. The freeze will either be it just plain stopping, causing me to have to hold the power button down twice for some reason to reboot or it will turn my whole screen bright white by having it "spread" quickly from a few points.
I have no idea what could be wrong, I don't even know what udev uevents are but this seems to be a problem with Arch and not my laptop because every other distro or os you can think of has worked on it.
    Any help is appreciated.

I actually forgot all about this topic. I believe I found the problem though and it's good to know other people get it to, not just me.
This also fixes other prebuilt kernels for other distros.
I found out that most Dell laptops have their own special format for the PCMCIA bus and if a certain something is probed (which udev has been doing) the system will freeze. Anyway as far as I know this fixes it, I'm yet to have any crashes.
In /etc/pcmcia/config.opts for pcmcia-cs there is a range on an include line near the top: 0x800-0x8ff. Just get rid of that range it it should be fixed. If you use pcmciautils in the same general area there are lines and one should have 0x8ff at the end of a range, I can't remember the full range but just comment out the line with that in it.
I got that from http://www.whacked.net/ldl/faq/ which even though it looks to be years and years old still has a lot of useful information in it.
Wouldn't mind some feedback if this worked for any Dell users, seems to have worked for me. Thanks.

  • How do I install the builtin graphics drivers for my Dell Latitude D620 in Windows 8.1?

Hi, I would like to be guided through the correct driver installation for the in-built integrated graphics driver for my "Dell Latitude D620" Laptop PC which is running Windows 8.1 Pro (32-bit). By default, Windows 8.1 includes ans installs the
"Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver" to maintain compatibility with the OS. I would like to install the original and genuine graphics driver supplied by Dell Inc. (not by Microsoft) on Win 8.1, how can I achieve this? please
    help.

Yes, Dell will have better answer for this issue
Since this PC quite old, I suggest contact Dell
Based on product spec, your Laptop maybe using 256MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 110M TurboCache or
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (Up to 224MB shared5)
    http://www.dell.com/us/dfb/p/latitude-d620/pd
there is no driver for Windows 8.1 32 bit
    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/latitude-d620
This is Windows 8.1 system requirement, I suggest discuss with Dell

  • I cant download all my iPhone photos onto my Dell Latitude laptop. I get the impression that Apple are trying to force me to buy iCloud space in order for me to do this. If so then I'm done with Apple products. I would rather buy a Samsung in the fut

If you cant read what I've written above then your system is just pathetic. At my age, I don't need to be instructed on "how to write a good question". Why must a brief detailed  technical question be summarized? Why cant I do the supposedly simple task of downloading "all" of my photos from my 64g iPhone 5s onto my Dell Latitude E6410 laptop in one simple press of the button process? Instead my Laptop is always trying to download mega gigabytes of all my laptop photos onto my iPhone. I am now totally convinced that the Apple Corporation has implemented a scheme trying to "force" me, and every other Apple customer, to buy more iCloud storage instead of allowing us the cheaper option of storing our own photos on our own lap tops and our own external hard drives. If this is the case then Apples tactics are back-firing, and I for one, will never buy another complicated, user-unfriendly, rotten capitalistic Apple product again. If there is a simple way of downloading all of my photos onto my laptop in one simple move then why cant it "simply" show you how to do it, like all the other companies smart phones do? From one **** of an irate customer. K.I.S.S. or lose customers. Don't try to rip us off financially, with devious money making schemes, the general public will respond accordingly and you WILL lose market share.

Go buy a Samsung if its suits you better then and don't be rude these are user forums !
Give Google more information about you what you do where you are etc....... TO TARGET adverts at YOU via Android at the same time.
Or whats wrong with the FREE photo stream conduit that over air transfers images to your pc pictures folder (And you don't need to buy any extra storage ever) the images just transfer !
Also what is so difficult with plugging in to a USB socket and having images automatically uploaded/downloaded into your Pictures folder ?
Unless of course your PC USB is a slow 1.1 socket !
True the sync process is all encompassing rather then delta but it does mean true syncing

  • Request for developers to include the Dell Quadro FX 3450 in their beta linux flashplayer for 10.1

request for developers to include the Dell Quadro FX 3450 in their beta linux flashplayer for 10.1.  i'm guessing it wouldn't be hard to do.  its the same chip that is used in the Nvidia Geforce 6800.  It has NV42GL core processor.  please don't leave this device behind, any acceleration that can be done to the existing flash player would definitely count, as great.
    thank you

Hi it turns out that the SVN version is the most up to date which does not need to be patched as it has the right version numbers. I have created a new PKGBUILD.

  • Trying to image a Dell Latitude D630

I am trying to image a Dell Latitude D630 laptop using PXE. It is set to PXE
boot in the BIOS. I select Maint Mode when the imaging screen comes up.
Output starts running on the screen as normal then all the sudden the screen
goes black and nothing else happens. I have to end up powering off the
    laptop.
I saw a previous post where someone was having the problem and suggeted
toggling between CRT and LCD display on the laptop but this does nothing.
We are running Zen 6.5 SP2.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help Marcus.
I tried adding the two lines but it did not work. I was finally able to
resolve my issue but using the Zen 7 SP1 Boot CD along with TID 3421576 to
get the laptop imaged. It looks like it is time to upgrade my Zenworks!
    Thanks again.

  • Dell Latitude D600 Wifi Issue

    Hello everyone,
This is my first time installing Arch Linux, and I like what I see so far! My only problem is getting the wifi card recognized on my Dell Latitude D600.

My wifi card is the last entry.
I've installed the recommended driver (ipw2200-fw) from <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/De … eless_2200>, but the wiki page is pretty old, and the setup requires the rc.conf file which no longer exists (as of this year).
    iwconfig shows:
    lo        no wireless extensions.
    eth0      no wireless extensions.
...but not the wlan0 I need.
    I've tried:
    rmmod ipw2200
    modprobe ipw2200
as shown on <https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … nd_ipw2200> with both the ipw2100 and 2200 drivers, but with no avail.
I really don't want to trouble the community with such a simple question, but the wiki has me stumped at this point.
    Any help please?

02:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)
...but not the wlan0 I need.
    I've tried:
    rmmod ipw2200
    modprobe ipw2200
I would have thought that you should only need in your case the package ipw2100-fw installed by making sure your system is up to date with the command pacman -Syu as root - and then pacman -S ipw2100-fw
If you reboot after that then the ipw2100 module that seems to be needed at least according to the lspci output you quoted should automatically load and work.
What desktop are you running?  If you have KDE then you should be able to use the network icon to click and select a wireless network and work from there. If you are using only the console then you will need to use one of the command line wireless facilities (eg wicd) to get the wireless up and running.
Since your device is listed as 2100 loading the ipw2200 module likely won't work. Hope this helps.

  • Can´t draw on Dell Latitude 10 - Windows 8 ???

    Hi guys,
i have a pro version of Dell Latitude 10, it´s a tablet with a touch screen that works fine.
I can even launch paint and draw with my finger, but when i install photoshop cc as trial, i can´t draw anything.
What should i do ? Is there any special drivers needed ?
    best regards, Dimitri.

IE favorites sinking with you iDevices.
Today I too noticed favorite links that had previously been deleted reappeared. After finding list thread and reading @Paulio999 reply I did the fallowing
to solve the issue, because I keep all my web browser's, computer's, and device's favorites synced.
Open iCloud control panel on all computer you use iCloud on.
    Under bookmarks-Options, un-check Internet Explorer.
    Click OK button
    Click Apply button
    Close  iCloud control panel
    On one iDevice open Safari.
    Open Bookmarks
    Delete all bookmarks
    Select done
    Close Safari
On your Windows machine under C:\Users\-user name-\Favorites
Delete all the links that are no longer wanted
    Open iCloud control panel
    Under bookmarks-Options, check Internet Explorer.
    Click OK button
    Click Apply button
    Close  iCloud control panel
Your favorites should now reappear on you iDevices and any changes you make from your windows machine to your IE favorites should now work correctly between your devices.
I tested this on two Laptops, one tower, an iPhone5, and an iPad3.

  • ITunes has stopped working error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  Why?!

For some reason, I keep getting the "iTunes has stopped working" error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  I am using Windows 7 on my 64-bit computer.  iTunes will begin to optimize the photos in the folder I have directed it to (I am trying to load almost 3000 photos and videos), and it will go through optimizing all of them singularly, then get to the step where it says "optimizing" again, but does so in bigger groups.  It will get to about 2000, and then the error message "iTunes has stopped working" will pop up, and say that "Windows must close the program and will search for a solution, and if it finds one, it will notify me".  Why can't I sync these photos, and what can I do?  Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it!

Same problem here! Moreover, for some reason, the pictures in my iPhone 3GS somehow have been divided into 2 folders, Photos and Medialibrary. And when I open iPhone as a folder through the explorer I can see only the Photos folder, but cannot see the Medialibrary folder which stores the photos taken before updating/upgrading the iPhone and getting separated folders!!! What the hack with all of this?!!! When I connect iPhone to PC it automatically opens iTunes and starts syncronizing it, but at the process of OPTIMIZING the photos (and according to the number of photos it shows, I see that it tries to syncronize that invisible Medialibrary folder) the process suddenly stops and error message pops out Tried the sync test, tried the button DEBUG in that pop out message, but NOTHING HELPS!!! Also, when I open the Medialibrary in my iPhone, the screen get sblack all through scrolling it down, only the video clips are shown there... >.<
So, could you, apple developers, please, explain WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS ABOUT?!!!!!! FIX IT! I am getting ****** of to spend hours at the computer and reading those lame advises which do not help at all! I have my own things to do except reading your support websites. And I payed for the product ready to use, but not a halfproduct which problems should further be solved somehow by users..
