So I downloaded the wrong Airplane Mode program for my operating system and I now have AppleScript Error message.  It will not allow me to quit the program.  Also, once that happens how do I remove the program from the computer?

What Airplane Mode program? To stop a running program launch Activity Monitor (in utilities folder) and quit the program from there. To remove the program drag it to the trash or better use the uninstaller that should have come with it.

    Hello,
The CCleaner Program form Priform does not support OSX Mavericks.
I personally feel that you do not need a 3RD party cleaning software on your apple computer, due to the fact that the computer performs these tasks automatically.

  • Java Program in Different Operation Systems

Just one question? can I use a java program (.jar) compiled in windows, in my solaris only by copying the .jar , or do I need to compile it with the solaris SDK?
Thanks in advance for your help and sorry for my ignorance.
    Javier

    Hi,
It is not required to recompile bcoz the .jar file contains .class files which are independent of Operating system which will be taken care (interpreted) by JVM.
Actually there is different JVM's for different operating systems(Windows 98,Unix,OS/2). No need to have differend java class file for different operating system. Pls, remember Java is platform independent language.

  • Can i have both Linux, Windows, and Leopard operating systems on my mac

Can i use Bootcamp to have a Leopard OS, a Linux OS, and a Windows OS partitioned on my single Macbook?

For Linux I much prefer having it under VMware Fusion because MacOS doesn't support ext3 and Linux doesn't support writing HFS, making it hard to share data between the two otherwise. The latest version of VMware Tools supports cut and paste between Linux and MacOS (last version of Parallels I used did not have ability to do cut and paste between Linux and MacOS and ran much slower with Linux) and Linux runs at pretty much full speed other than graphics (but I'm not running Linux for graphics, I'm running Linux for software development). Note that setting up your home directory (or a subdirectory thereof) as an NFS share, then mounting that within your Linux virtual machine, results in faster throughput than trying to do everything on the VMware virtual disk, all that lives on my VMware virtual disk is the actual operating system (I have my home directory mounted to a directory on my Mac where my source code lives). I usually use Aquamacs and p4v on the Mac side to actually edit and do source control on my source code, then pop down to the Linux window to compile it and do an initial smoke test to ensure that my fix actually fixed what I think it's supposed to fix, then pop back up to the Mac Finder to drag the result over to the open Finder window for the Engineering Test CIFS share on our corporate file server from whence the actual QA test systems in the lab can grab it and test it. It's a cool way to do Linux software development . Especially since I must develop for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms for multiple distributions of Linux, and VMware lets me fire up a couple of them at a time (why I have 8GB of RAM? Now you know!) to do all this in a sort of overlapping manner.
For Windows... meh. I've used both the latest Parallels and the latest VMware with Windows 7, and both of them are sluggish even after you turn off all the various GUI effects under Performance and Accessibility and if you don't give at least 2GB of memory to the virtualized Windows 7 it gets really slow if you try to do anything sizable at all (such as run Microsoft Office to edit things that for some reason don't edit correctly in OpenOffice/NeoOffice). So Boot Camp it is, especially for playing games, which simply is not acceptable at all under virtualized Windows 7. Oddly enough, Windows XP runs acceptably fast under both Parallels and VMware, so I'm not sure what Windows 7 is doing that makes it work so poorly under virtualization. But that's Microsoft for ya, I guess...

    Hi.
Is it possible to have just one CC account and installed programs on one windows comp and one apple comp together?

    Yes.
Can be installed on both Windows and Mac OS X (not iOS).

  • Arch Linux Programming Language Logos

    *update*
I've created a page for the logos on my site: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … age_logos/
    *edit*
This started out with just the Arch Linux Haskell logo (I really liked the new Haskell logo when I saw it and felt inspired). After encouragement from others I've made some more logos. If you request something, please suggest the appropriate logo for the language (and maybe link to it... preferably to an svg file).
    Haskell
The cutout and grey colors are based on the new Thompson-Wheeler logo.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … l_logo.svg
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
These colors are from the haskell.org site logo.

    Python

    Java
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … a_logo.svg
    Ruby
Son of a dirty bitch was this more complicated then I'd expected. When I found the Ruby logo svg I was thinking "nice, this should be straightforward" until I opened it in Inkscape. The vector image was so dirty I ended up recreating the gem shape manually using the old one as a guide. I don't mind though... it showed me how to do point and path snapping and some other things.
    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … logo_2.svg
    with thinner lines:

    Tcl

    C and C++
I'm not really happy with either of these... plain letters lack symbology and the colors are arbitrary. Anyway, I modelled the C on the impact font (but didn't actually use Impact as it's still a commercial font). The color for the C logo comes from the color used on the cover of the K&R book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kr_c_prog_lang.jpg

    svg: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/arch_linux … p_logo.svg
    Perl
This one was a bit complex too but it taught me how to take a very small image with dirty edges and convert it into a smooth vector image using GIMP and Inkscape.
The color is from The Perl Foundation's onion logo.

This is another one that I'm not sure about. I created the parentheses and lambda myself because I wasn't happy with any of the (free) fonts. Suggestions for improvement are welcome.

I've changed the () following andre.ramaciotti's suggestion. I've also changed the colors.
The colors and alien are based on Conrad Barski's Lisp logo.

I've added a Tcl logo. I used the svg image from Wikipedia because it was the neatest way to do it. I used the colors from the second logo.

  • Installing Multiple Operating Systems with grub and Arch Linux

NOTE: Please keep in mind that there are many different ways to achieve this same result using various loop and ramdisk methods, read this with a separate window to jot down your comments and suggestions... this is ongoing for me so any help would be appreciated!
Read the full article at Install Multiple Os without cds
This is my first post and I plan on making this topic an official HOWTO with www.tldp.org.
I have been into the computer security scene since 1990, but I realized that I had very little experience with the various LInux, Unix, and alternative Operating systems out there.
I have a CD-RW drive but being a struggling computer security researcher I had no money for blank cd-recordables.  What follows is how I managed to install various operating systems on my computer (1 hard drive) without having to burn to a CD the ISO and then boot from that.
I first partitioned my 120GB harddrive into 10 partitions, the 2nd partition is a small swap and the last partition is extra large because it holds all the ISO images..
I then wrote a small shell script to automatically download (I love wget!)  the following.
    OpenBSD
    IpCOP
    Libranet
    Arch-Linux
    Fire
    Local Area Security
    Packet Master
    Devil-Linux
    FreeBSD
    Knoppix
    Helix
    Gentoo
    Yoper-Linux
    NetBSD
    RedHat
    Slackware
The script also downloaded Installation manuals and md5 checksums.. (let me know if I should post... its pretty unsophisticated
I installed Slackware (personal favorite) on hda1 using my last blank CD-R, note that I do not have a separate boot partitino.  (Should I?).  I also installed grub on the MBR.  I love grub, if you read through the man pages and all info you can find about grub, you can learn a whole lot.  Grub has much more features and capability than lilo, even though lilo comes installed by default with slack.
I organize my kernel situation as follows...  In my /boot directory, I mkdir KERNEL, CONFIG, MAP, INITRD and that is a good way for me to keep my kernels and everything organized..  Another good way is a separate dir for each new kernel.
Since Arch-Linux is a solid distro, I'll use that as a first example.
Here is the Arch-Linux section of my shell script
    goge Arch-Linux
    $w http://puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/archlinux/arch-0.6.iso
    $w http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/archlinux/arch-0.6.md5sum
    $w http://www.archlinux.org/docs/en/guide/install/arch-install-guide.html
    md55
    cat arch-0.6.md5sum
    md5sum arch-0.6.iso
    md55
The first thing to do is to mount the downloaded ISO image so we can use it as if it were an actual CD.
    mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 cdimage /mnt/cdrom
Where cdimage= the ISO image.   EX. /usr/local/src/ISO/Linux/Arch-Linux/arch-0.6.iso
This mounts the iso as /mnt/cdrom.
Next you need to copy /mnt/cdrom to a separate partition for the booting process.  So mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda9.  ( I prefer reiserfs or even XFS to ext but if you use something other than ext2 you could run into some problems because some of the installation kernels and initrds don't include support for reiserfs and so can't recognize the files.  Although you could use mkinitrd to create a new initrd with reiserfs support, that might be pushin it IMO...   I use the 9th partition consistently for this.  I know there is a "right" way to copy the /mnt/cdrom files so everything stays the way it is supposed too, using tar or cpio, but I'm lazy so I just do cp -rp.
(What is the tar or cpio commands to copy with correct permissions etc??)
So you mount the 9th partition as whatever, say /mnt/hd and then copy the files.  Now what?
Now edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include the specific options to boot arch-linux installation.
A good idea is to find the isolinux.cfg file somewhere on the distro cd, this will tell you what to include in the menu.lst.
Here is the section in my menu.lst
    title Arch Install
    root (hd0,8)
    kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 root=/dev/rd/0
    initrd=/isolinux/initrd.img
This should be self-explanatory.  The root (hd0,8) is pointing to partition 9.  So the rest of the commands start from partition 9.
When you experience problems, remember you can always edit the grub boot options by typing 'e' and then edit the section.  Also, a good idea is to include several variations in your menu.lst so you can easily try other ways to boot efficiently.  And, remember to read up on all the installation guides that come with your distro, specifically, hard-disk installs.
There are special cases, Gentoo, has a semi-new compressed filesystem called squashfs.  BTW, this is AWESOME, so check it out.  It has to be compiled into the kernel, so some work is in order, but use this recompile to optimize your kernel.  You can get the squashfs patch for almost any kernel.  I use the latest stable 2.6 kernel.  Squashfs is incredible and although I don't think you need it to install from ISO, you do need it to expand the livecd.squashfs filesystem that comes with the cd.
Heres a sample Gentoo section from my menu.lst
    title Gentoo Install
    root (hd0,8)
    kernel /isolinux/gentoo root=/dev/ram0
    initrd=/isolinux/gentoo.igz init=/linuxrc acpi=off looptype=squashfs loop=/livecd.squashfs cdroot vga=791 splash=silent
A nother' tip is the shell that is provided if you experience problems, typically busybox or ash.  The key tools to get you going from here is mount and chroot.  Sometimes you will need to manually create a simulated file system and then chroot into it.  For instance, you might have to create boot, etc, bin, directories on the target partition.
I generally install each OS onto the next partition (careful of the logical partition) and add it to my menu.lst after install.  A good idea is after installation, copy the kernel and initrd(if there is one) to the slackware(or whatever) boot partition on hda1.  I copy kernels to /boot/KERNEL/ and initrd's to /boot/INITRD, then menu.lst is more organized...
You then need to add an updated section to your menu.lst (just comment out the install section for later)
Here is the finished arch-linux section from menu.lst
    title Arch Linux 6
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 ro root=/dev/hdc3
This doesn't use my convenient boot/KERNEL/vmlinuz26 as you can tell by setting the root to partition 3.
***NOTE: Make a backup of MBR using dd and save to floppy, also backup the partition table to floppy, using cfdisk or parted.  And boot disks (I use 1 with grub, and 1 with slack, and tomsbootdisk) will invariably come in handy.  Tomsbootdisk is recommended, and make the grub boot disk when you install grub.  install to floppy.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The final result after some fun experimenting, is when I boot, I have a cool grub boot screen come up with the option to boot into whatever OS I want, this is handy for multiple reasons.  One good thing to do after this is to port scan and vuln scan each OS, after you update of course.  Write this stuff down and you will know the weaknesses/strengths of the various OS's.
I can boot a custom Firewall, snort, or multiple honeypots using this procedure, as well as a graphical kde environment with a kernel optimized for graphics and my processor/architecture, or an environment devoted to forensics or even an environment suitable for programming.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
P.S. Some of the cooler alternative operating systems are BeOS 5, EOS, ER_OS, V2_OS, and my personal favorite Menuet.  Menuet is 100% assembly graphical operating system that fits on a floppy.  Its f'in money!
This should be a good enough example to get you started, this kind of thing should be learned and not just copied... Knowing how to do this stuff could prove to be exceptionally useful...

  • I want to uninstall my version of adobe elements 11 in order to upgrade my operating system and then re-install. I have the original disk but not the code or registration info - where can I find it or how can I contact someone who can help me?

Do I have to alert adobe if I'm moving my product from one computer to another? or will they recognise my intentions when my product is removed from their database?

Is there a way to export my movie timeline (as in the organisation of my

  • Operating System specific variables

I would like to determine the operating system on which the application server is installed.
We have a Linux and a Windows operating system running Oracle application server 6i and Oracle application server 9i.
The forms look in the database for the path from where to run reports. Initially we had only the windows machine so we have path specific to windows, we have added a new linux operating system with Oracle 9i application server, so we are having problems with path.
Is there a way by which I can determine the operating system and accordingly change the path.
    Thanks in advance.

You have presumable noticed that the System.getenv() method is deprecated.
You might look at bug ID 4199068
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4199068.html
which calls for it to be reinstated.
In the user comments there is some JNI code to implement your own getenv function, and other workarounds. Unfortunately this RFE is now closed, so we can't vote for it.

  • E71 and Symbian or S60 operating systems

    Hello, all!
I have loved my Nokia E71 smartphone so far. The only thing that really tweeks me is not being able to try or use the ton of new things that come out daily for other operating systems like Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile. Is there a site or Symbian program that would show Symbian alternatives to programs from other operating systems?
It almost seems like a punishment to see what the other operating systems get to play around with when Symbian is treated like a re-headed step child. It seems like we are left out in the cold often.
I know the fix would be to buy a phone with one of the more popular mobile operating systems or use a cell carrier that uses one of the above mentioned operating systems. The company I use gives me unlimited text, internet, and voice services for $45 a month which is tons better than the $75-$110 I would be paying for limited usage. The sad trade-off is less choices of upper-end cell phones. Where I'm at, Straight Talk only offers 3-4 smart phones and all of them are Symbian or S60 operating systems.
If similiar apps were offered for our opearting system, I'd be tickled beyond beleif! Any thoughts or advice? I really don't see myself going with a more expensive cell plan or utilizing anything besides Nokia phones. Nokia is what I have to choose from and, quite honestly, I'm very pleased with Nokia phones aside of the operating system sadness.
Thanks in advance for any input! I hope y'all have a great week and weekend!

    I was afraid of that.
I'm looking for functional apps mainly. I don't game or do anything but use the phone for texting, calls, and very light surfing. The main app I want is a very good paid or free app for blocking SMS and unwanted calls. I use Kaspersky 8 currently, but it doesn't quite do everything I want.
I want the SMS and calls blocked or refused completely. Kaspersky puts calls in a Black List for me, but the callers can still leave voicemail. I have not found a setting to stop that. I have seen several blocking apps listed in the app store but hate having to pay for something and then discover it's not what it's cracked up to be. My budget doesn't allow for that kind of experimenting.
I'm also looking for a better antivirus and internet security program for my phone. I have not been real happy with Kaspersky 8 or 9 and have even gotten rid of it on my computers. I now use Vipre Antivirus and I'm happy with them for my computers. They do have a smartphone program, but not for S60 and Symbian operating systems. Sadness.
Thanks for your input! Have a great weekend!

  • Linux/Unix administrator's programming language of choice

    Greetings,
I finally got everything running to the point where i have 1-2 hours free time during work
So i was wondering which programming language i should learn with focus on linux server administration. (read below)
Some background: Most of my tasks atm include standartization and developing typical solutions for common business processes. I worked with MS AD enough to understand that it sucks (yes, honestly.. a time deviation of 1hour from the domain server preventing 70% of equipment from functioning) so my aim is to find (or develop) alternatives.
My "programming" background to this day involves only small tweaks with html and bash scripts (switching to reserve internet connection, basic server status scripts, backup, cleaning of old files etc.)
Hardware currently in use: Arch with drbd, kvm for virtualization and redundancy. CentOS - mailserver with Apache, postfix, mysql etc. FreeBSD as gateway cluster with BIND, NTP and stuff, also backup servers. And way too much microsoft running on the VMs.
Choosing a programming language i wanted to keep in mind following tasks:
    1. Improving server monitoring script (which currently is really just a server pinging bash script that prints something on a webpage with apache)
    - needs some way to check services beyond pinging the servers, f.e. telnet the mailserver on pop3, checking whether shared folders are mounted, printers are visible, checking the time on the AD server (hate this one )
    - checking whether the backup is working (some way of analizing the logs and sending "ok" would be enough)
    2. automatization of starting and stopping VM's in case of failure
    - currently i have to assign primary and secondary drbd, change the autostart script on all nodes according to who is the new primary for the VM and then start the VM manually - which is annoying, especially if i forget to change even one line in one script and the whole MS servers start to hang because of an IP conflict.
    3. Something to get rid of Acronis Enterprise Suite for backing up
    - it hangs almost every time that someone forgot to close his damn xls file after work.
Therefore i worked out some guidelines for the language:
    - crossplatform (MS, Linux and BSD servers in use)
    - replacement for bash, should be as easy to implement on any linux and able to work with bash commands (or replace them without the need for much hassle)
    - easy to implement with other languages and the web and maybe some common API (like the python script in O'reilly that steals the coffee bean prices from a webpage)
    - able to create simple filters for analizing and reformatting huge chunks of texts
PS: i know there may be ready solutions, but i prefer to learn things by doing them myself
I'm looking forward to people sharing their experience in similar tasks,
    Rip

I've actually had a hard time finding something that does exactly what I want (linux admin automation, and a "overview" of the general system status). Munin will give you graphs which is "ok", Nagios looks like its from the 90's and has better support for "paying customers", etc...
I'm wanting to build a standardized admining system, so I can actually have time to work on other things. I think it should be KISS, and modular (to keep it lightweight, and to do anything "extra" that someone might want). Webmin comes close, but I don't think it has a CLI. I've tried Puppet and I have problems maintaining Arch and Ubuntu (server), and I want something to fix that.
I've actually started this too, (in Python 2), https://github.com/Afterburn/hal. Its by far not complete, but I'm trying to adhear to what I've stated. Here is a pic http://imgur.com/MZls5. As of now it just logs stuff to a postgres db, and will email you if something is wrong (you have to tell it when it should email you, ie if free space in boot is less than %10).
Sorry if I've kinda skipped around (tired) but at the least I want a solid (lightweight) alerting system (mainly through email, but as I said I want it modular so people can receive updates via RSS if they choose). I'll sub to this thread and explain further when I get a chance.

I want to install a third operating system on my macbook pro. I already have windows and i want install unix or linux in there. Is it possible??

Yes, it's possible, but if your Windows system is on a Boot Camp partition then you have to first remove it. Then create however many partitions you want for the operating systems. You have OS X on one, so you need two more - one for Windows and one for Linux. You then install Windows and Linux separately to their respective partitions. Download rEFIt
Use it as the replacement bootloader so you can properly boot from each OS properly.
