Linux vs. linux-ck power usage - laptop users please post your results

Krum reported are rather significant increase in power consumption when using the linux-ck kernel vs. the linux (stock ARCH) kernel.
krum wrote:With the last ck i7-avx, I jump from 10W (stock arch) to 15W on my laptop with the same kernel options and same usage.
I will investigate further another time...
I began to wonder just how universal this was so I tested on my own laptop (Intel T9400 @ 2.53 GHz, NVidia FX, 2x2 GB, SSD and 17" screen) booted into three different kernels, ARCH, ck-generic, and ck-core2 with the latter two downloaded from my unofficial repo.  I took two readings per kernel.  The first was measured with powertop on battery after letting it settle for a good 3 min of idle.  The second was with the battery removed and on AC power measured with a Kill-A-Watt.  My results indicate no significant differences.
linux-3.0.3-1
Powertop: 37.5
Kitt-A-Watt: 41
linux-ck-3.0.3-4
Powertop: 38.6
Kitt-A-Watt: 41
linux-ck-core2-3.0.3-4
Powertop: 37.5
Kitt-A-Watt: 40
Can others running both kernels do a similar analysis with powertop and post the results here?

Hi,
I did my test with powertop.
I got also higher temp:

So it seems to be OK, I will do new powertop test when my battery will be full.

  • TO ALL 7690m XT LAPTOP USERS - PLEASE POST TO SHOW HP WE WANT A REPLACEMENT OR REFUND

Hello,  I am starting this thread to show HP that we HP customers did not spend $1000+ for a giant paper weight.  I purchased my HP Dv7t on Feb 6, contacted HP by Feb 9 to complain of graphics issues.  I was told that there is nothing HP can do till a newer graphics driver came out (which never came as we were promised).  I purchased this computer for one reason; to play games.  In the past 3 months it has been collecting dust, while I use my older laptop to play games on the lowest possible setting waiting impatiently for the new updates.
The issue is HP's most recent Dv7t Quad laptops were being sold with a 7690mXT graphics card which is known as a gaming card.  HP also markets it as a gaming PC.  Yet I am unable to play Star wars the old republic, Mass Effect 3, and Battlefield 3.  The games just crash.  HP told us back in Feb that in a month a newer driver would come out, never did.  Other issues are over heating, GPU throttling down fps on movies and games, and random crashes.
I read on formus today that HP achnowledges this issue and is now only replacing your Dv7t with their brand new option with the Nvidia GPU if you purchased your laptop within 21 days.  I feel as a loyal HP customer, with a faulty $1300 laptop withing its warranty, only purchased less then 3 months ago, reporting issues 3 days after receiving it, the fact HP cant solve their issues, deceived in purchasing a faulty laptop design, advertised as a gaming laptop, the fact I have helped more HP Customers on their forums then their own tech support, that we and I deserve a refund, or a replacement, so we may finally utilize our computers.  I have owned 5 computers in my life, never had an issue like this before, so [legal discussion:removed] they better do the RIGHT THING and give us our replacements.
Please post your issues so HP can see we were tricked into purchasing a faulty computer.
    Thanks.

Kudos to all the gamers and other notebook savvy users for their posts about the 7690M and 7690M XT. In February, I purchased a dvt6 i7 quad core with 2 gb of Radeon 7690 m XT. I chose this notebook after reading about it on various forums where gamers mostly post. Not knowing much about computers it seemed the gamers knew a lot. I wanted a really nice laptop. with good graphics. I love visual arts and product design. I was thrilled to order this notebook and was assured by the HP sales staff that I was making a wonderful choice with the dvt6.. I got the 7200 hybrid drive and the 1080p display and looked forward to fast performance and visual wow. Because of the cost, over $1000, it was important to me the notebook stay in stride with future technical advancements for  the next two to three years., at least.
I felt aggrieved when HP walked away leaving me alone with the 7690M XT. During the 21day return policy I hammered at testing the components. Lacking many computer skills, little did I know I had been I thrown into a radeon/ intel marriage, dysfunctional. at its quad core. Intuitively something about how the graphics worked seemed off. Calling tech support confused me more. Tech after tech told me I did not have an intel display adapter. I did not have switchable graphics. "Your order form only lists the Radeon card.!." I went back and forth with different techs with different takes. I imagined the techs were right , despite tne fact the device manager had two adapters, the order form trumped all.. One night I had this dream.
Intel: " Honey, call the driver we need to take Crysis to school."
Radeon: "Yes dear, but the AMD agency fails to update his license.".
Intel: "That's it, I will take Crysis since all you do is look good and make promises you pretend to keep." "Why didnt you call for a new driver?"
Radeon: "Call? When? All you do is takeover and run everything?" (Radeon huffs, turns red,and leaves.)
Inel: " Oh,not another black out, I am leaving you for Nvidia !"
I know very little about how a computer works I made repeated calls to tech support and was led down one dark alley after another. I have spent twenty+ collective hours with support. Reputably, I was told that I did not have an intel display adapter or switchable graphics: only the AMD 7690M XT. Last week my HP case manager mailed me an email with downloads to fix my graphics with updates from July 2011. Strange. I will have to investigate these updates as it seems I already have more current updates. The case manger insisted I do the downloads to see if my games play. The only other alternative he offered was to send my laptop in for repairs. I emphatically told him there were no repairs for the graphic problems because HP does not have a proper driver for the 7690M XT.

  • MSI Neo2 users, cpu temperature!!!, please post yours!!!

    Hi Guys
for the MSI Neo2 865PE users,i want to know, what is your guys cpu temperature while your computer is idle and stressed/underload.
    my rig:
    MSI Neo2-S (bios ver.1.0) P4 2.4C @stock speed with stock heatsink fan
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro (not oc'ed)
80 GB WD and 60 GB Seagate HDD
Antec 1080 AMG with 430Watt psu
    4 fan running = 2 intake 2 blow out
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    1x512 MB Ram Kingston
    and,
i'm using pcalert4, and it shows:
    CPU idle=45 Celcius
    CPU when playing games=60 Celcius
    System Temperature = 29-32 Celcius
please post yours, please... because, i think it is too hot for p4 to have that kind of temperature.
    thank guys!!!

    Quote
I am wondering how accurate the sensors are on these boards.
I don't think MSI (nor any other manufacturer) has a step to calibrate the temperature sensors, so the answer is - not much
They are just relative temp readings, and probably vary from board to board.
    Quote
system temp. Board readings are from 39c to 43c but the air temp coming out the back 120mm fan is 31c to 33c.
Air cooling is achieved by transferring heat from hotter components to the cooler air. This will raise the temperature of the exhaust, but never higher than your hottest component. It actually depends where the sensor is located. If you put a card on the PCI slot above the Winbond chip, you would probably observe higher SYS temperatures.

For what it's worth: I'm merely a hobbyist and have no production-level experience with video editing.  Nor do I want it. ;-)  So my use of PPro is somewhat limited.  I didn't upgrade, rather I nuked my system disk from orbit and re-installed from scratch.  I don't like doing OS upgrades, regardless of the OS (WindBlows, OS X, Linux, etc).
All that said: I haven't had one lick of trouble with Lion and PPro.

  • MacBook Retina users please post screenshots

My trusty 2009 MBP 17" just fried, I'll regret it except that it had become unbearably noisy... The old white macbook I borrowed is so much quieter, and it makes such a difference to my stress level at the end of the day, that for the replacement of the MBP I now look for the Retina, whose flash memory only, special unevenly spaced fan blades, new advanced design etc make me think that it's by far the quietest option. Just guessing.
The retina comes with this 2880x1800 screen. Since I highly doubt that Logic 9 will be ever retina compatible, I'm curious to see how it looks like "as is", see how legible it is, hear experience from users...
And of course I'd love to see a Logic benchmark on that new machine
    Thanks !

    mlehmann, you say
    > Logic 9.1.7 is already Retina-compatible
    and
    > I don't see the point [in using Retina's 2880x1800 definition in Logic] since everything is way too small to be usable.
I thought that making an app retina compatible consisted in adapting the size of controls so that they would be usable on a high-def 15" screen. If not, in which way is Logic retina-compatible ?
I understad that you can reduce the retina display's definition to 1440x900 without any degradation since it just uses 4 pixels as one, but what about the 1920x1200 definition, is it usable with Logic ?
I wanted the shop to install Logic on their demo machine to let me test, but they say they don't have the right to do that. Intead they suggested that I come to the shop with Logic installed on an external HD. Trouble is, you can't install Logic on an external HD... so my only solution is to wait for existing users feedback
    Thanks

  • Laptop Vs Desktop Power Usage

Does a laptop such as the PowerBook use less power than a desktop such as the PowerMac or iMac? It is a general question on power usage?

The answer to your question is yes, portables tend to be more power efficient than desktops - of course they also tend to be less powerful in terms of performance. The components in portables are chosen to minimise power consumption, in order to maximise battery life (and minimise heat in the small confines of a laptop where cooling is difficult).
Here's a list of the maximum power consumption (per hour) for some of Apple's current line-up (information gleaned from Technical Specification pages and Apple Support documents)
    12" PowerBook: 45W
Mac Mini: 85W (Power consumption of monitor needs to be added)
    iMac: 180W
PowerMac Dual 2Ghz G5: 604W (Power consumption of monitor needs to be added)
Like I said, this is this is the maximum power draw. For instance, with the G5 it would need to be fully loaded with RAM, Hard disks and PCI cards and processing something both disk and processor intensive to reach 604W.
Real world power usage would depend on how hard the computer is working (rendering video or 3D uses a lot more power than viewing a web page) and what components are installed (faster hard disks consume more power) and peripherals are attached (USB and FireWire devices can draw power over the bus). Airport (Wi-Fi) and BlueTooth also draw more power when activated.

  • X300 power usage

    Calling all X300 users!
I'm curious what your power usage is like when on battery in Windows. I have no idea how you would measure it, but I assume there must be some software which can tell you.
For me, in Ubuntu, with Bluetooth disabled (I have no WWAN, so disable that too) with the screen fairly dim I run at about 8-9Watts, but I have no idea if that's good, bad or average.
    Post your results please!

195 cycle already, so the battery holding 75% of the original charge is about right. In Windows Lenovo power manager can recover some of the lost charges, by reconditioning the battery... but since you are not using Windows, then you would have difficulty doing the battery recondition...
basically battery recondition fully charges up your battery, then fully depletes your battery and then fully charge up your battery again, it is recommended that you do this maybe every couple of months and every 50 to 100 charge cycle.
You can do this battery recondition without the software by fully charging the battery, then fully discharging it (by disconnecting the power supply), then you can fully recharge it again.

  • Slow Modem Users-Please Test Download Speed & Report Back

    Dear iMac G5 Users,
Several of us have tested download speeds using our built-in 56K modems. Nobody has been able to get our iMacs to download at anything over about 29 kbps or 3.6 KBytes/sec. That looks to be about half of what is advertised. (No surprise really - I can only burn DVD-R's at half Apple's advertised speed). My old G3's modem will easily download at least 5.8 KBytes/sec or 46K. That's much more reasonable for a 56K modem.
Could you users check your download speed at some place like: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and post your results here?

I did the Speakeasy test from my home, and I got 24 kbps. However, this is the same speed
I got on an iMac DV with its built-in modem.
Yesterday I took my G5 iMac over to a friend's house; I wanted to test the modem
speed from a better line, and to verify that the airport card worked properly.
When I connected, Internet Connect app reported 50667 kbps.
When I did the Speakeasy test, it reported 43 kbps. This location used to
get 40000 on a Bondi iMac when it first came out (OS 8.1) so I figured this was about right.

  • SAP 64bit Linux application server (Linux on Power) memory config issues

    Hello Everyone,
Let me give some background. I have been tasked with replacing our AIX6.1 SAP application server with new Linux on Power servers (SLES11SP3)
Our current production BW application servers (AIX) are running fine given their current setup. We are fine implementing the same size of the AIX systems on the new Linux systems, but we now have more room to grow in the fur, however when I tried to implement the Linux server using the same memory sizing I am getting runtime errors: "TSV_TNEW_PAGE_ALLOC_FAILED" with a specific user created program and process chain. The AIX servers do not run into this issue running the exact same program. When this process runs, it utilizes 3 BTC process for the program.
Using the note 941735, I have tried to correctly setup the system using STD memory implementation, however I have a feeling that I am missing something or setup something incorrectly which is causing the above issue. Looking in ST02 here is the SAP buffer parameters for two of the systems. Perhaps someone might notice something that I am not see or point me in the right direction. Please let me know if more parameters from the profile are needed. Thanks!
    AIX system (existing):

Yes sapconf has been installed. sapconf however only sets the kernel settings.
I was able to resolve the issue by having Zero Admin tool using 'es/implementation = map' and setting the PHYS_MEMSIZE to the desired amount. Then commenting out all the values that are defaulted in the 32bit version of the memory management guide for linux and let it size many of the values. Then I simply copied those from st02. I updated the profile with those values to override default for  'es/implementation = std' and commented out PHYS_MEMSIZE as it is not needed. In a nut shell, the following parameters were updated.
    es/implementation = std
    em/address_space_MB = 4096
    em/blocksize_KB = 4096
    em/initial_size_MB = 14320
    em/max_size_MB = 14326

    rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS = 131072
    rdisp/ROLL_SHM = 131072
    ztta/roll_area = 6500352
    ztta/roll_extension = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_extension_dia = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_extension_nondia = 4000000000
    ztta/roll_first = 1

  • Unable to install Oracle 10.2.0.1 Companion CD on Linux on Power

I have been unsuccessful in trying to install the 10.2.01 Companion CD (to install HTMLDB and HTTP server) on a new RHEL 4.5 Linux on Power. Please tell me what I am missing...
    - Downloaded Oracle Database 10g Companion CD Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) for Linux PowerPC (10201_companion_lin_ppc.cpio) ...finally got the right version of the companion CD!
Followed the documentation in the oracle Database Companion CD quick Installation guide 10g release 2 for Linux on POWER (#B25152-01)
Also looked at the Metalink 317085.1 (Don't think that this applies since it's for Linux X86 systems)

What the heck am I missing...... (frustrated since it's taken me 5 days to try and figure this out...I am sure it's simple and staring me in the face, but I can't see it) Thanks in advance for helping.

Was able to resolve the issue by downloading the 32-bit version of JAVA's SDK from IBM and issue the runInstaller command pointing to this location of java's jre:
    1. Install IBM Java 1.4.2 32-bit :
    IBMJava2-142-ppc32-SDK-1.4.2-1.0 or higher (IBMJava2-142-ppc32-JRE-1.4.2-4)
    From: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux140/older_download.html
    2. Run the installer with -jreLoc pointing to the location where Java 32-bit is installed. % /products/Disk1/runInstaller -jreLoc /opt/IBMJava2-ppc32-142/jre

  • HOW TO Install Oracle 10g on Linux on POWER

    Hi Linuxers,
SAP has released the Oracle 10g Database Software for Linux running IBM's <a href="http://www.ibm.com/systems/linux/power/">POWER(TM)</a> platform in the first half of 2006. The release has come with a few headaches. SAP's Development Support receives so many of the same questions that I thought a little how to would be in order. In my first <a href="/people/patrick.hartman/blog/2006/10/17/how-do-i-install-oracle-102-on-ibm-linux-on-power">Blog</a> entry on the SAP Developer's Network, I have taken SAP Note <a href="https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/945315">945315</a>, <i>SAP installation with Oracle 10.2 under Linux on POWER</i>, and tried to thoroughly explain each and every point. If you plan to run, or are running, SAP on Oracle and plan to install on the IBM System p line of servers, this <a href="/people/patrick.hartman/blog/2006/10/17/how-do-i-install-oracle-102-on-ibm-linux-on-power">Blog</a> entry should help you.

    Hi,
I think you can forget it. Oracle 10g R2 was the last version supported on Linux PowerPC.

I've installed RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.4 on IBM PowerPC server.
Now I want to install Oracle 11g on it. But there are no Oracle 11g downloads for Linux for Power.
Is there any workaround so Oracle 11g can be installed on Linux on Power?
