Lion 10.7.1 intermittent jittery trackpad

This is a really annoying intermittent problem! I've tried the usual stuff - re-boot, fix permissions, fix disc, etc., but, intermittently, my cursor goes wild - it's as if a maniac has taken over the computer - it jumps about, opens other applications and won't allow me to control it. The only fix is a re-boot, and that works for an hour or more, or just a few minutes - sometimes the problem is still there on re-boot, so I have to do another at once.
What's odd is that it doesn't seem to happen with the recovery system that I use to fix the permissions...
I'd re-install lion, but I can't see that helping because, at times, like now, as I type this, it's all working perfectly well.
Any suggestions?
The most recent thing I've tried, which might be why it's working now (difficult to tell with intermittent problems!) was to turn off the 'show desktop' gesture. I've never really seen the point of the desktop, and I hoped that changing one desktop parameter might reset the trackpad driver. I'll follow up this post if it goes again.
The only error message that I can find that seems to be around the time is a M$ one - no surprise if that's causing a problem, of course, but it could simply be coincidence:
29/08/2011 10:29:57.681 com.apple.mdworker.i386.0: objc[593]: Class NLAssertionHandler is implemented in both /Library/Spotlight/Microsoft Office.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/MetroFramework.framework/Version s/12/MetroFramework and /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Outlook.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/Microsoft Outlook.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/../../../../../../../Office/mbuinstrument.fra mework/Versions/14/mbuinstrument. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

This has taken a while to deal with. I'm not sure it's fixed - after all, intermittent errors like this erratic cursor are difficult to fix and it's difficult to know if you've got the core problem.
I've now followed lots of advice here with other people who've had trackpad problems with jumping, jittery and erratic mouce movements. With me, as I said, it would start suddenly, with the moust opening applicaitons jumping around the screen and ignoring all trackpad input.
I've even worried if it might be a hardware problem - some people have swollen batteries which, apparently, can cause this sort of thing.
Mine seems in good shape:
Health Information:
  Cycle Count:          304
  Condition:          Normal
  Battery Installed:          Yes
  Amperage (mA):          591
  Voltage (mV):          12526
So I'm hoping it isn't the problem..
The Adobe Air problem seemed connected - so I've reset the  keychain, as recommended and deleted caches all over the place.
I've also, to try to fix the thousands of mdworker errors that might be connected, deleted the spotlight indices then stopped and started spotlight, using mdutil.
I've also made sure that I've got plenty of space on my hard drive, deleting old stuff, in case that was part of the issue.
Now I've not had an error message in the console for about 10 minutes, which is great - so the file-read-data thing seems to have gone. I'm installing a new MS Office update. I've installed the latest Adobe updates.
I've now been working with the trackpad for an hour without the erratic, jittery trackpad problem. So, some of all this must have helped...

    Hi Jason
I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

  • Are Lion gestures a significant improvment over Trackpad+Snowleopard

I have a magic trackpad with snow leopard for my iMac. The trackpad is brilliant and allows me to use gestures. Does Lion add significantly to that experience (mainly, the use of gestures)? I will eventually upgrade but I was wondering if I am missing out big time in the meanwhile.

Nevermind. A lttile digging and find out that the Magic Mouse has a limited set of multi-touch capabilities:

It appears the Magic Trackpad has the full set of capabilities:

  • Mountain Lion Server - Folder names intermittently change between Upper and Lowercase names on some user's iMacs

    Hi,
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong group, but I couldn't find a Mountain Lion server specific group.
I have a new Mac Mini Server running 10.5.8 that serves Mac only users. The Mac Mini has a 4tb Promise Pegasus RAID attached via thunderbolt. Today, some of the users on the network reported that a folder on the RAID was quickly alternating displaying it's sub-folders as all capital letters then upper and lowercase - I witnessed this and it happened 2-3 times a second. I have run a propogate permissions fix on the folder, then the whole volume from within Server App and also copied the contents of this folder to my Mac, then I deleted the original from the server and created a brand new folder with the correct name and copied the contents back.
The problem still persists. Server App does not report any issues and other folders don't exhibit this behaviour. I've looked to see if there are any weird characters in folder names that would do this. The volume is shared via AFP only (SMB and WEBdav are off).
Any ideas as to what could be going on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
I solved this problem. I fixed permissions on the Mac's that the users were using to access the server and this has fixed the problem. The server folder giving the problems had many nested folders totalling over 5000 items inside and this seemed to corrupt the permissions on the user's macs.
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues.

  • Intermittent trackpad freezing

I have been working along just fine with my 2-day old laptop and I have been having some issues with the trackpad. The trackpad unexpectedly stops working for about 10 seconds. It resumes working then stops working again within a minute. This continues multiple times then the touchpad works well for half an hour or so.
When the touchpad is not working, I cannot get the cursor to move or select anything.
I do not have a mouse installed.
Is this a driver issue or is this a hardware issue? Is there a setting that I can change to resolve this problem?

    Hi,
I am having the same problem. The model of the HP laptop is 15-1010dx. I got it in mid-January of this year (2015) and I've been having the problem since about 3 weeks after I bought it.
The trackpad will stop working randomly. My computer screen is a a touch-screen, so I will have to use that at all times which is not always convenient.  Sometimes the part of the track-pad that moves the cursor around will work, but then the left and right clickers won't work at all. And then, sometimes it is the opposite problem. Most of the time the trackpad just does not wor kat all. I am finding I need to restart my computer in order for it to come back to life.
There must be a fix for this - can anyone help / share ideas/thoughts??
    Thank you!
    Danielle

  • Trackpad won't move the arrow correctly Lion.

My trackpad is only able to make the arrow go left to right, and only if I touch the top of the trackpad. Just installed Lion earlier today, was working fine. The mouse works. Any ideas?

I installed Lion yesterday and started using the trackpad. When it works it's terrific, problem is it's unreliable. Half the time it works, the other half it's all over the screen, barely tracks at all and gestures respond intermittently. I've taken to leaving a standard mouse set up and work both at the same time. Judging by all the forums I've looked at, no one has a solution and worst still Apple seem to be doing nothing about it.

  • Magic Trackpad and Lion

I just upgraded to Lion and also bought a magic trackpad, i knew i had to install the magic trackpad and multitouch update but did'nt know that i had to before upgrading to Lion, now that i have Lion the trackpad update says that it doesn't support Lion. Is there gonna be a new update or may be i didn't download the right one but can't find any other,

I was facing the same problem with my iMac late 2008! Magic trackpad wouldn't recognize 4 fingers gesture to enter in mission control in the vertical, but changed between desktops using 4 fingers gesture in the horizontal! Besides that, magic trackpad wouldn't let me drag icons or drag windows to move them around! I tryed doing what Tommie expleined and it worked! Both issues were solved! Thanks!

  • Single or double click with thumb doesn't work well on trackpad since upgrade to mountain lion

I'm using a 2009 MacBook Pro recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
The internal AND external trackpad behavior is disappointing compared to Snow Leopard.  Neither one seem to register my thumb single or double click unless I do it pretty hard. For instance, selecting a word or double click to select a line.
A single finger works better but it's inconvenient to change years of training.
Sometimes I tap w/ my thumb on a button or link and it works and sometimes and I get no response until I use my finger.  It's like the trackpad sensitivity is off. Single tap only half works.
I was really efficient with the old trackpad behavior and my thumb.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I'm the OP and I'm the one that listed the problem originally. I spent an hour with apple care and the genius level two guy suggested I wipe my whole system. LOL, for a 40MB app, yeah right. The issue with Safari 6 is javascript, according to yahoo javascript is turned off. If you try to change your classic yahoo mail to the newer version it will give you a javascript turned off error. So for whatever reason Safari 6 has javascript turned off even though it is clicked ENABLED in preferences. Crazy. I did find my solution though and that was to dump Safari 6 by giving myself "read and write" permissions and then dumping the safari chache, plist, and preferences files. Then I installed Safari 5.17 by downloading the dmg from the net using PACIFIST. I had complete directions but somebody at apple decided to delete the whole post.

  • Macbook 3,1. Clean install of Lion. Two days later my keyboard and trackpad aren't responding.

Left my computer for a couple minutes. Came back. Tried to move my mouse. Wouldn't move. Tried to Command-Tab to a different program. Keyboard wouldn't type. Plugged in my USB mouse and restarted. Got to the login screen and couldn't type in my password because the keyboard, along with the trackpad, still wasn't working. Tried powering down and removing the battery. Nothing.
So I scheduled a Genius Bar appointment. But is anyone else having similar issues with Lion upgrades killing their keyboard and trackpad?

So it happens constantly, but shutting down my machine, unplugging the power cable, removing the battery, and hitting the power button/holding it down to reset the SMC works every time. Anyone know what this means?

  • Trackpad Failure for no Known Reason - Should Apple be Held Accountable?

About a week and a half ago while using my MacBook Pro, purchased December 31st, 2009, I began experiencing intermittent erratic trackpad behavior.  Untouched, the cursor would move across the screen and even opened Garage Band on its own.  I was unable to use the trackpad due to this, as the cursor would jump around causing me to select things unintentionally.   I attempted restarting, cleaning the trackpad, cleaning my hands, etc.  The only way I was able to use the computer was by plugging in a USB mouse and selecting the option of turning the trackpad off when a mouse is present.
I began searching the discussions on here to determine what may be the problem at hand.  I hadn't spilled anything or mishandled the laptop in any way, so that was not to blame.  I came across discussions of battery swelling disrupting trackpad operation and thought it seemed possible.  Not wanting to attempt a diagnosis on my own, I called customer service.  The woman I spoke with said it didn't sound like a software issue as the mouse did not behave in the same manner.  She did tell me that because my phone support had expired I would have to pay a fee to receive any troubleshooting help.  This infuriated me - a company not willing to help a customer troubleshoot via the phone???  Mindy informed me that I could take it to the nearest apple store (over an hour away, might I add) and see if they could be any help.  She set up an appointment for me the next day at 3:00.
At the Apple store, I checked in with a man whose role was not entirely apparent to me; he seemed disinterested in the swarm of people in the store and more focused on looking important with his iPad (A sales rep. had to tell me that he was the one I would need to check in with - I don't even think Mr. iPad made direct eye contact with me during this process).  After I was paired up with my designated  "Genius" I informed him of the problem, and what I suspected it might be.  He turned the computer off and back on running his diagnostic tests.  Nothing seemed to be out of sorts, so he took it to the back to inspect the innards of my beloved MacBook Pro.  He came back a few minutes later, and told me the battery looked fine, and that everything else looked fine as well.  He then told me that the trackpad itself must be to blame, and that it would cost me 50 some dollars and an additional 30 something for labor.  I asked why the trackpad was malfunctioning, as I had taken good care of my computer.  I was informed that sometimes trackpads stop working.  Sure, they may stop working, but not on a computer under two years old that shows no signs of mishandling!  I told him I shouldn't be expected to pay for this due to this reason.  He told me that he couldn't waive the parts fee and that IT WAS A CHEAP REPAIR ANYWAYS.  I was appalled and told him that actually, $50 is a lot of money to me - the computer was a gift and I don't take $50 lightly.  He backtracked, saying that in comparison to other repairs it was cheap.  I asked to speak with his manager, who came out and told me the same thing.  They would waive the labor fee and charge me for the part.  The labor wound up taking about 15 minutes - definitely not justifying the cost of the "labor".  The final paperwork I received stated:
    Issue Verified:  No
    Known Liquid Damage:  No
    Issue:  Trackpad tracking issues
Steps to Reproduce:  Checked at the bar
Proposed Resolution:  Replace trackpad and waive labor
Cosmetic Condition:  Minor scratched and abrasions
Seeing as how a laptop is useless without the mouse, and the fact that I have no car and had to get a ride for the over-an-hour trip, I really had no choice but to have them replace the trackpad.  I am, however, FURIOUS that I was made to pay for a new trackpad when I had done nothing to cause the first one to fail.  I thought that when you purchased a MacBook PRO that you were purchasing a top of the line product "DESIGNED TO LAST...FOR A LONG, PRODUCTIVE LIFE".  No one in their right mind would shell out over a grand for a machine designed to last...less than two years!  I have babied this computer and rarely ever take it of the house - solely because I did not want to make a stupid mistake and ruin a very expensive, very important piece of equipment!
I am wondering if Apple is ever held accountable for these sorts of issues?  In the case that a piece of hardware malfunctions on an otherwise pristine computer with no known reason, should Apple be obligated to fix the part?  As Apple states that their products are "designed to last for a long, productive life", shouldn't they be required to fix problems like this?  Isn't that false advertising?  I wasn't even given a real reason as to why my trackpad failed!  Also, if the trackpad has a manufacturing/design error, Apple should be required to replace this for me - warranty or not.  (After over a month of calling about a problem with an iPod out of warranty for over a year, I finally found a rep who recognized the manufacturing error presented and had it repaired, free of charge).
Has anyone else had success in holding Apple accountable for this on a product that is out of warranty?  If so, I would love to hear about it - I am going to be writing Apple a formal letter of complaint and would like to know if anyone has had them own up to the problem, along with the case #.  Also, does anyone know what could have caused the trackpad to malfunction in the first place?

This is going to be a hard argument and you may not like the answer.
Were you ever offered the AppleCare extended warranty when you purchased your MBP? Like you said above ..its a "Pro" model and it should have good quality parts.  Believe it or not the MBP is very well made.  However, like all stuff we buy it there is a chance it breaks.  Unfortunately you had a failure.  There isn't much you can do when you purchased the MBP you were made aware of the one year warranty and were giving the option to extend the warranty through AppleCare.  Thats the arguement that Apple is going to make.
If I were you I wouldn't write a angry letter to Apple.  If you write a reasonable letter that expresses your concerns over the quality of the Apple product you will be suprised what you may receive rather then writing a angry blast of their company.  Basically write the letter step away from it for a couple hours reread and rewrite it.

  • Intermittently losing pop smtp and isp connection

Intel Mac Mini, Mountain Lion, 8 GB RAM
Intermittently losing pop, smtp and sometimes isp connectivity.
Can ping to IP address, not to isp name
Same for wired and wireless connection
Other Macs on network do not have the same problem
ISP says no POP or nameserver issues
    Have:
run hardware diagnostics - all OK
disk utility -> repair disk - no issues
    memtest - no issues
Onyx full maintenance and cleaning - no issues
Erase HD, fresh media re-install, time machine restore
    started to lose sanity

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test will take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Late 2011 macbook pro a1278 no keyboard or trackpad

    LATE 2011 MBP a1278 , i5  , running Mountain Lion 10.8.5
Keyboard and Trackpad stopped working after a regular shut down with no peripherals attached or bluetooth on.
Keyboard allows pram and smc reset before entering OS X environment . Only power button works while in operating environment- all other functions kb and trackpad do not work while system is booted. External Usb keyboard, usb mouse and bluetooth keyboard work fine except the usb port nearest the screen, it supplies power to devices but will not transfer data. The  Trackpad is new , and works on a test machine without issue. The fan stays on high regardless of pram and smc reset as I believe it does not see the trackpad, and as a result does not see the heat sensor built into it.
Have the latest firmware upgrades installed to current, Tried turning bluetooth off booting with no peripherals attached, restarting in safe boot, putting to sleep then waking up, repaired disk permissions a few unrelated to the problem, tried different os x on other hard drives... then fresh installed Lion 10.7 then updated, upgraded to ML 10.8.5 , deleted that then clean installed Mountain Lion -no change.I have even tried terminal command to re enable keyboard and trackpad. I have read other threads that suggest it`s a software issue but have went through all that. Why is the keyboard working at boot but not in the os x itself? Trackpad as mentioned is new and works fine in a test machine.Frustrating when there is no reason as to this problem - given external mouse and keyboard work fine..
Running Apple Hardware Test soon and will post back- it`s extremely slow given a kernel is at 94% in normal OSX , and while in safe boot drops down to 1% . In safe boot, the internal trackpad and keyboard still do not work but externals are all fine, with web pages loading quickly. This internal keyboard and trackpad worked fine in a different system.
The original recovery partition on the HDD is lost as the hard drive has been replaced. Are there drivers specific to this machine that are potentially missing and need to be reinstalled, like the system recovery discs that came with early 2011 Macbok Pros?
If anyone has ideas as to what`s up, appreciate the response. TIA ...

So that's got to be a software problem. Have you tried Internet Recovery?

  • Trackpad/Keypad issue.

    Hey everyone,
I have a Blackberry Curve 9360 and noticed today some issues with the trackpad. When my curve is on the home screen, the trackpad will not work. I have to press a punch of random keys all at once in order to get some keypad to work. Using the search option I can then access other menus and the trackpad will work in these other menus, It will not work at all on the home screen and will only scroll in the other menus. I can receive calls and texts still but cannot answer calls as my keypad only works every now and then. After looking through the posts I tried to update the OS using Blackbery Desktop Software. It successfully completed the software update, however now my phone is stuck on the terms and conditions page, which I can not scroll to the bottom of to accept. My phone did not get wet and I have tried pulling the battery out and letting it sit. The trackpad does work since it scrolls in other menus, so please do not say the trackpad is broken. Any ideas? Is anyone else having this problem?

I am having a similar issue with a Curve (9360) and Bold (9900)... I support a wide range of BlackBerries for work. Intermittently, the trackpads will stop working vertically on almost any screen (messages, menu screens, etc).
The workaround I have found to temporarily resolve the issue is to move left and right; this will work and seems to allow the user to move vertically again. Since this seems to be a widespead issue, will different models and different OS versions, I believe it might be hardware issue, hopefully the next update will resolve the problems!
The Bold has the latest OS installed.
The Curve is one OS version behind. I've been trying to get the client in so I can update, but he's been busy.
Has anyone else had this issue? If so, try moving left and right, then up and down again. It should work.
Here's what I'm having them try now:
Options -> Device -> Device and Status Information
On this screen, type in the word test
Press the BB Menu button, then select Start.
Click on Yes for all of the popups and de-select all the options except for Trackball (at the top). Click on Run.
Go through the testing and if the trackball isn't working properly, enter the reason during the test.
After this, try going to the following:
Options -> Typing and Language -> Trackpad Sensitivity
I would try playing with the vertical sensitivity, since this is where we are having an issue. Assuming it is at 70, move it up to 80, save and test this out. If you notice you continue to have issues with it, move it up to 90, etc.

  • Trying to select option in Lion Recovery Assistant

    Hi There,
I'm trying to do a fresh install of Lion on my Mac Mini using the recovery assistant, however when I boot up using Option r into the 'Mac OS X Utilities' screen that has the 4 options to select from, I can highlight any of the options however it doesn't allow me to select them or press continue (using my keyboard or touchpad)? Any ideas how to fix this?
I'm the only user set up on my mac mini so am guessing it's not to do with not having sufficient permission?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks for the help. I actually got things going after I realised that going into Lion recovery mode messed up my trackpad and keyboard settings. Once I sorted these out it all seemed to work fine.
    I appreciate your help though.
