Lion 10.7.1 system hangs after reboot

Strange, I have just updated to 10.7.1 (via SW update) on my Macbook Pro and now the system does not boot. It restarted and now hangs since minutes with the spinning wheel on a grey screen. Anyone experienced this, too? Any solutions?
Thanks a lot.

Regarding the occasional system hang on reboot people are experiencing. I have two troubleshooting suggestions to help you get to the login screen, but aren't solutions to the problem of whatever is causing the system hang. 1) I find my hangs are usually solved by removing my USB devices from the 2 USB ports (via USB hubs) and rebooting. 2) Furthermore, if I boot into verbose mode (holding command+v right before the chime) (sometimes after removing the USB devices, sometimes not), that usually helps the boot process along, either due to just chance (I don't know why booting into verbose mode would help it surmount the initial hang, but it seems to work sometimes) or some other reason.
Good luck.
Yeah that better be one big fat good luck there, because that advice is not going to help anyone that is having this problem. Not one little bit. Some kind of magic that Verbose Mode casts will fix it? Uh, no. That would be a figment of your over-eager imagination, Verbose Mode doesn't change anythig. Oh and by the way, in order to get to this stage in the probelm, you would have had to use verbose mode to get the error message.  I can only assume that you sir are the real troll here, because our friend above asked a question that is worth merit and consideration, given the compatibility disaster that Apple has on their hands. To call it a disaster is not in the least bit an exaggeration.
We're going to have to ignore This is not an "occassional system hang", this is a serious problem affecting my MacBook Pro 17" and my iMac 27"., and it occured on both of them for me after installing Lion Server.
My blog post tracking the issue is here:

  • Upgrade to Solaris 10/08 hangs after reboot

I upgraded to Solaris 10 10/08 however the system hangs after reboot.
I had never any issues with its previous versions. Any thoughts?

To be sure I upgraded to the latest BIOS.
Both kernel debugger and single user mode do not work.
This seems like a serious issue in my opinion.

  • System hangs on reboot/shutdown after kernel upgrades

I've been experiencing the problem that, whenever pacman upgrades the kernel, the system hangs on reboot or shutdown.  It only happens on the first reboot/shutdown after a kernel upgrade.  I've noticed it consistently for a while now.
    To reboot, I issue:
    # reboot
    To shutdown, I issue:
    # shutdown -h now
I should also mention that I typically reboot after kernel upgrades because hotplugged storage devices (USB, SD) fail to be detected unless the system reboots.  That is, devices plugged in during the upgrade remain usable, but plugging in something new appears in /dev.  There may be an obvious reason for it that I'm missing, but it's never bothered me enough to look into it.  Not sure if this and the reboot/shutdown issue are related, though.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When Apple Hardware Test says there is a problem, there definitely is a problem.
But like many diagnostics, it does not catch everything.
It can increase your confidence that you do not have gross flaws. The Hardware problems that remain may be more subtle ones.

  • System Hangs after adding Storage :(

First dont jump on me for mentioning a 4800 this is storage related.
    Solaris 8
    Brocade 3850(SUN Branded)
    SUN Samfs(4.2.8, running 5 months)
EMC Clarion(Old existing and always seen in config)
    Infortend FC-SATA array(Newly added)
I have added some FC-SATA drives to my 4800s. The process of adding these drives was done by a 'cfgadm -c configure <Controller #>'. Following this the disks are seen, striped and shared with SAMFS. All is good at this point.
During reboot the systems hangs just after the boot message of "System is coming up". I think it is at the point of finding mount points and doing an 'fsck', but the system never completes(+45 minutes).
When I drop back to the original configuration prior to the 'cfgadm' the system then boots just fine, but I then need to do 'cfgadm -c .....' to see the drives and mount my SAMFS partitions.
    Any ideas?

    SimonM
The disks can be seen when I attach the storage with a 'cfgadm -c configure <controller #>' and the system up and running. After dynamicly attaching the storage I can create filesystems, use SAMFS to share the filesystem out, and all is good across all machines.
I only have an issue later in life when a reboot(hate for a panic) occurs. Some sunsolve/goggle'ing found some old document that were very dated that pointed to the path_to_inst and fiber not playing well.
I am not 100% sure that the system has hit the mount/fsck processes or not but it is the next sequence in the boot process. I know it is storage/config related because (1) adding the new disks is the only thing that changed on the system, (2) returning the OS back to its original configuration before the disks being added allows everything to boot fine. I was just looking for some pointer of where to begin troubleshooting.
I will keep everyone updated. Like I said I only get a couple of hours every month if I am lucky.

  • PPC G5 system hangs after Leopard Install

Well I had been monitoring things with the new OSx for awhile before installing. I had upgraded my Macbook Pro (Intel first Gen model) and my newer Intel MacMini with no issues. So after using both of these machines for quite awhile, and with the release of 10.5.2, I decided to upgrade my PPC G5 from Tiger to Leopard.
Everything seemed to go fine. I installed all possible updates and have used several apps with no problems, such as Adobe PS and Dreamweaver, etc. But now I am starting to notice a serious problem.
Every time my system either goes into Screensaver mode or sleep, when I try and bring it back it is frozen. All I get is the beachball and the only thing to do is a hard shut down with the power button. My system never did anything like this under Tiger.
Has anyone experienced a system hang like this?

Do you have any external drives (especially Maxtor or Maxtor OneTouch Drives)?
I know on Tiger I had this same problem and it turned out that there was a problem between the Mac's Firewire drivers and Maxtor OneTouch drives. Maxtor had a patch that fixed the problem on Tiger, but I'm not sure if the patch is needed also for Leopard. Not sure if Maxtor drive support is continuing since Seagate bought them.
I'm currently having a problem on Leopard with hangs (not specifically the same as yours). I'm wondering if it is again a problem with compatibility between Leopard and the Maxtor drives.

  • System hangs after launching P2P

    Hi,
I have just installed a K7N2 Delta MB with a 2500+ Athlon and a 3200 DDR (PQI) of 512 Mo. My OS is WinXP SP1.
Everything works very fine until I load a P2P (emule).
I had not this problem with my defunct Elite MB (with a 1800 Athlon and a 2100 DDR).
I have an ADSL connection via an ECI USB modem.
WinXP and the MB Bios and drivers are updated (using Win update and MSI Live monitor). I have also updated the VIA chipsets with VIAHyperion4in1446vp6 and updated the NVidia drivers/programs SINCE the USB host controller is an NVIDIA one (therefore the VIA USB 1.1 cannot be installed)
I have uninstalled/re-installed all my USB ports and also closed the LPT port.
The ADSL modem is connected to an hub while I have connected my optical mouse to a separate USB port (since MSI writes that the mouse consumes a lot of energy).
I have aloso enabled the USB in the Bios and even the KB USB whereas I do not have an USB KB (I had the same problem when the KB USB was not enabled).
The BIOS indicates an 100 FSB.
    What should I do?
    Thank you in advance.
(pardon my approximate English and technical languages).

    Sharp,
I have re-installed WinXP, installed the Nvidia updates (and the MSI and Win XP ones) and installed a more recent and more efficient ADSL connection driver.
However, eMule hangs after less than 1 minute with a 166 mHz as well as with a 133 mHz FSB (this means: I cannot close it with the Task Manager and I am obliged to re-boot WinXP.
Moreover, the CPU temperature climbs quickly to 60°C at 166 mHz.
I know that I could solve the temperature problem by installing a new fan. However, I am not certain that this would solve the hanging one (although one may think that it's the temperature that leads to the hanging.
I have discovered in the eMule forum that other people with other configurations encounter the same difficulties as me. Therefore, their solutions will probably not be found on this site.
    Thank you for your availability.

  • System hangs after leaving any window manager rebuild xorg?

Just did a full system upgrade and everything is working fine except when I leave ANY window manager like fluxbox or gnome, the systems hangs and will not drop back to console, the screen just goes black with a white horizontal line about the size of a cursor at the top of the screen. I also start my window managers from the console with startx. Anyone else had this problem? And now X is just freezing at random, very random and not all that often. Should i just rebuild Xorg?

This is weird. It's like it shuts down different functions one by one like the scroll, mouse, keyboard and other stuff that is related to gnome. It doesn't freeze, it just shuts down some functions that make it impossible to use desktop environment and now I've tried to turn off Compiz, Emerald and using the Clearlook theme but still it's the same thing.

Yes, I'm using Nvidia but its not the same error. My computer doesn't freeze.

  • Lion upgrade seemingly hangs after reboot at the "Installing" prompt

I ran the Lion installer in the InstallESD.dmg file located on the desktop of my fully functional 10.6.8 installation.
The first part where the installer does various things, including "Downloading additional components", went well and completed with a Restart button, which I pressed.
Then the linen texture appeared with the big white Installing prompt and the blue-white candy/progress bar. But nothing else happens.
I left it for ten minutes and then pressed the power button on my Mac Pro until the computer shut off. Then started the computer again.
But I come back to the linen background and the candybar prompt.
Must I really wipe the drive and clone back 10.6.8 and start over?
    Thanks for any ideas.
    /p

I have tried the following, all without result:
    - resetting the PRAM
    - verifying the checksum of the downloaded Lion file
    - installing on the bootdrive (SSD) to which I downloaded Lion (thinking that perhaps it must be installed on that drive)
    - installing on an external harddrive by upgrading a Snow Leopard system with all updates
    - installing on a second internal SSD by upgrading a Snow Leopard system with all updates
I'm completely at a loss and have no fraking idea what to do.
The reason I wish to upgrade is to be able to use Office for Mac which uses a Rosetta installer. Were it not for that I would happily have done a clean install. But since the upgrading goes so badly I guess I will have to buy the new Office.
    Gah.

  • System hangs after bootup

I have a MacBook Air 11", installed windows 7 without a problem, everything was working fine until this afternoon when I went to reboot into mac system.   Under options it showed the mac drive, windows drive and other hd, could not get any response from either the mac or windows drive.  Rebooted and this time was able to log onto the mac drive then everything is hung, couldn't get any response from any of the programs and was forced to use the power button to close down.   Waited a while and everything appeared to return to normal and after doing what I needed to do I shut the computer down.   Next time I tried to boot up the same thing happened.   Does anyone have any idea as to why this should happen.  The other problem I have and am concerned about is that obviously I don't have any external way to re-install the mac operating system should it become necessary at some time in the future, I purchased my machine a few weeks ago and it did not have a cd or dvd with it.  Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the operating system to download from Apple.
Sorry for the long drawn out message and thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

posible is the logic board problem.....that day i just exchange new mba2011 due to this problem
you still can use your lion just connect wire mouse

  • Lion nfs vers=4 client hangs after writing to Linux nfs server

I have a Fedora 14 Linux server with nfsv4 setup, since that's what I use for all my nfs clients.
I tried setting up nfsv4 client from OSX Lion 10.7.3 and 10.7.4 but somehow I get the following problem:
Whenever copying a file (tried about 10MB) to nfs mounted directory from command line, the cp command just hangs. I cannot kill it using Ctrl-C. If I open another terminal and try to access the mounted directory from there, that also hangs. Any command that accesses the mounted directory (df, ls, etc.) all hang. The only solution is to shutdown the machine forcefully.
When I look at the server, I can see that the file has been fully copied. It looks like some protocol negotiation after the file write is done is somehow stuck.
I tried bunch of mount_nfs options like async, rsize/wsize with various sizes, dirplus, nolocks (actually this gives an error), etc., but none of them helps.
    My nfsv4 server options are
    (rw,insecure,no_subtree_check,nohide,no_root_squash)
For now, I'm using fuse4x and sshfs installed from macport, but this is limiting since I can't mount to any mount point unless I own the directory (which means only inside my home directory), and the files are not synchronized across mounts with other clients.
Would netatalk 2.2.2 file server be of help? I only seem to hear bad stories about netatalk, so I'm a little hesitant.

How are you doing the mount on the Mac side? Are you using the command line or the Finder? Do you have any non-default options on the client side?
NFS is an older protocol designed for enterprise networks where users share the same set of uids/gids on all systems. Typically, root does all the mounting and then handles all the permissions. On a modern desktop, things are usually more complicated than that. The standard Linux solution of doing everything as root and ignoring everything is unlikely to work. You could either do it the traditional UNIX way with root and properly mapped users, or do it the pure client way in userland with properly mapped users. My suspicion is that something else is going on since you want to mount outside of your home directory. That can be done, but only if all the permissions are done properly.

  • [Solved]System freeze after reboot after upgrade

    Hi,
At first I encountered the problem that "loading udev uevents" took forever, so I loaded a live cd and upgraded everything. Since then, my computer does boot and doesn't hang at loading udev uevents, but it now freezes when it shows a login field after booting. The keyboard doesn't do anything, and the screen just keeps frozen like a popsicle. I wanted to downgrade my nvidia and kernel version, but when I try to downgrade my nvidia version it states that My kernel version is too high, and when I try to downgrade that, My nvidia version is too high, seemed like an impossible loop to me.
Ow, and between booting I can see a lot of errors starting daemons and mounting the systems as well, but as I can't boot it's quiet hard to look them up (if I knew where to look, but I don't because I'm kind of a newbie) and post them here.
I've been thinking about installing arch all over again, but it seems to mee that I then have to lose all the installed programs, daemons and configurations which took me over weeks to create and make work, so any other option would be very helpfull.

    rc.conf :
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs @crond hal slim fam cups @sshd @mpd @alsa @samba mysqld httpd @transmissiond @xinetd)
I use an nvidia card, I boot to x using slim
I currently can boot again normally, loging and use the command prompt (thank god), also the daemons are all running, except for slim. When I start slim in the terminal I get the error:
slim: Stale lockfile found, removing it
Somehow I managed to fix this by removing and reïnstalling the kernel, but slim isn't running yet.
