Lion 10.7.5 slowed videos down & many pop-ups

I have an old MacPro late 2007 bought in 2008.  6 hard drives...24 Gb RAM...I was running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Now 1) I keep getting pop-ups such as MacKeeper almost anytime I click on  a web page now...  2) When viewing YouTube all the videos stop and go with a spinning circle cutting the scenes to ****... I used to be able to watch MacProVideo sample tutorials and now when I select one nothing happens... My internet line speed is 160 mbs/sec.  any idea of what this might be the problem? Running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 never ran as slow. Vids were played straight on... appreciate any insight!

  • Mac running slow and many pop ups

    Hi!!
My mac seriously became slow after my husband started messing with the chrome properties. Now it directs me at every click to a pop up with crap and plays video really slow.
    Can someone please help??

Please review the options below to determine which method is best to remove the Adware installed on your computer.
    The Easy, safe, effective method:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:

  • So many pop ups

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro running Mavericks and have been getting a crazy number of pop-ups on both Chrome and Safari. I am running ad blocking add ons and some still sneak by. Even sites that never usually have pop ups have issues. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

You may have installed malicious software.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; AC="com.autodesk.AutoCAD  com.google.GoogleDrive"; H='^[[:space:]]*((127\.0\.0\.1|::1|fe80::1%lo0)[[:space:]]+local|(255\.){3}255[[:space:]]*broadcast)host[[:space:]]*$'; NS=networksetup; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; AT () { o=`file -b "$1" | egrep -v '^(A.{16}t$|cann)'`; Ps "${1##*/} format"; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; l=`wc -l <<< "$o"`; [[ l -gt 25 ]] && o=`head -n25 <<< "$o"`$'\n'"[$((l-25)) more line(s)]"; Pm "$1"; AT "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed -E '/^ *$/d;s/^ */   /;s/[-0-9A-Fa-f]{22,}/UUID/g;s/(ochat)\.[^.]+(\..+)/\1\2/;/Shared/!s/(\/Users\/)[^/]+/\1-/g' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Computer is being slow, with plenty of pop-ups; is it a Virus?

    Hey community,
My computer is being slow, and has a lot of pop-ups. Sometimes a pop-up comes out and asks me to call a number saying my computer is infected and doesn't let me click anything on firefox screen affecting my homework, since I have to click the firefox button on the upper right and then click "quit firefox" so I can exit the internet. Its the only way I can exit it since that pop-up doesn't let me click anything else. Is there any solution to this? I want my computer to be fast again and with no pop-ups. Are there any products I can buy to clean my computer completely? So I can have a brand new working computer. I don't care if I have to delete all my information on this computer. I simply want a fast good working computer again.
    Thanks for your time,

  • Labview - How to create custom menu bars, drop down menus, pop ups etc.

    Hi,
I have  a very naive question. How does one create menu bars with custom labels (not NIs defaults), drop down / side menus, pop ups etc.?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

Search for the following on the NI website: Run-Time Menus, Run-Time Shortcut Menus.
For pop ups, search for 'dialog' in the Examle Finder (Help -> Find Examples)

  • Slow video down to single frame, pause a few seconds, then speed back up?

I'm working with a video clip where I'd like to show a single frame for a few seconds. I think I can figure out how to slow down the video for a second or two surrounding the desired frame, but I can't figure out how to pause or freeze it at that point.
I'd like it to be fairly smooth on the slowdown, stop, and start up, I'll also have the audio slow down and stop, I think it will be a neat effect.
    Any good ideas?
    iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'd like it to be fairly smooth on the slowdown, stop, and start up
A possibility is to use the Time Remap free filter. Use the default Mode (Variable Speed) and keyframe the Speed control from 100% to 0% on the frame you want still, and back to 100%. You can also use the Smooth contextual command on the 0% keyframe to get a smooth speed change.
What the filter does not do, though, is to change the audio speed...

  • Too many pop-ups

I can't even look at a website...any website because the pop-ups won't go away. I close them and they come right back. I have deleted everything from my computer that is not necessary to run the software I have but nothing helps. The pop-ups are about Java, Windows drivers and some vieo player thing. I don't trust them. What should I do?

hello, you may have malicious addons present. please try these steps:
    # [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
    # afterwards go to firefox > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
    # finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.

  • Firefox is blocking too many pop-ups, eliminating some essential pics

When I go into Ebay or Paypal there are pop-ups being blocked. My pics on Ebay listings are not appearing in Firefox, do appear in other browsers.

All you have to do is add those sites to your exceptions. You can find the instructions [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Pop-up%20blocker?s=pop-ups&as=s#w_pop-up-blocker-settings here].

  • I have recently gotten many pop-ups with my blockers on.

I thought this was from a virus because it started when we found a virus or infection "acer arcade" a week ago and it was very hard to get out of the computer. I got everything out and the computer says it is totally clean of viruses but I am still getting pop ups with my blockers on. Is there something the computer can't see or is there something i need add on from firefox??? The pop ups come about every 5 minutes and it is very annoying!!!

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • Real time effex in iLife 6 slow my video down not bad but some what slow.

Real time effex in iLife 6 slow my video down not bad but some what slow. When I go to try out different effects it makes my prevue slow as I am looking at it in real time seeing what the effect looked like. I am using a i Mac G5 250gb and 1g of ram. Is there something rong are is this the way the i Mac G5 works with video thanks.

Be sure you're using the latest drivers for your Decklink...
If you didn't perform a totally clean install of the studio 2 when you got it, that might help. It's always been my habit to rebuild my startup disk any time a new OS comes out (i.e. Panther to Tiger) and when a new studio is released... I just have a very stable system as are the ones I watch after. I'm totally convinced this needs to be done periodically. At the school I teach at part time, there are about 65 FCP bays. They do this totally clean install every single semester. I'm convinced that this is the reason they are so stable in general, even being used by many user accounts etc...and by novice users to boot.
Also keep in mind that as drives get fuller, they get slower... so need to keep at least 10% free... they actually start slowing down at 70% capacity. As a side note, CalDigit's new HD PRO unit is stripped in such a manner that it doesn't slow down as it fills up... Apparently they stripe it so that every other drive is using the fastest part of the platters and the others start by using the slowest part of the platters or some such...

  • How do you stop Mountain Lion slowing everything down

I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion - which I so regret doing now.
I have a 24 inch iMac core duo 2.6ghz with 8 GB RAM (mid 2009) and a mid 2010 Mac Mini core duo 2.4ghz with 4GB RAM - so both with maximum RAM installable. Both Hard drives are under half full.
I use the Office 2011 for Mac software as well as the normal iLife suite. I occasionally use parallels to run some Windows software, but I always swith parallels off when not using it. And I occasionally have logmein running when I am going to be away for a few days, but switch it off when I am back. That's it - nothing too weird.
Since upgrading both to Mountain Lion I now experience a hige slowness in using anything. Web pages take ages to load. A Word dociment can take 30 second to open. It takes over 90 seconds to start up iMovie etc.
I saw posts on this formum suggesting that I
    a) Repair disk permissions
    b) delete the caches in ~/Library  and in /Library
    c) reboot
I have done all these things. Immediately afterwards my system speeded up to a more acceptable level. But 2 days later and it is back to an unacceptable slow speed
Surely I dont have to keep doing the three things above every day?
is there a way of going back to Snow Leopard? That will be much cheaper than having to buy a new iMac (which are way too expensive and the 21inch screen would be a downsize from what I have now and the bigger screen is even further beyond my budget
Or can anyone help me get Mountain Lion working quickly - all the time?
    Many thanks

I have the same early 2009 24" iMac as you do and I just completed reverting back to Snow Leopard from Mountain Lion.
The process was time consuming and took about 3 days to do. I also reverted an early 2011 MacBook Pro which also took 3 days.
Basically the first thing is to completely backup your machine as it now is under Mountain Lion. You may also want to drag and drop all of your user folders and shared folders onto the backup HD. Make a copy of all of your passwords, software licenses and the Mountain Lion keychain onto the backup HD.
iLife '11 and iWork '09 run under Snow Leopard and so those are not an issue. They can just be reinstalled after Snow Leopard is running.
The four parts of the reversion that entail some work are; 1: converting your Mountain Lion Mail boxes to Snow Leopard, 2: converting your Mountain Lion iPhoto Library back to Snow Leopard, 3: converting your Contacts (Address Book) to Snow Leopard and 4: converting Calendar (iCal) to Snow Leopard.
Converting Mountain Lion Mail to Snow Leopard
              1. From your user Library, copy the Mail folder to your backup HD
              2. Double-click the Mail folder and the V2 folder will open
              3. Double-click the V2 folder and your will have a list of your email addresses and a folder called Mailboxes
              4. These folders contain your mail box files (mbox) from which you can recover all of you email and import it back into Snow Leopard. In each email account, you will need to open a number of folder to get to the actual mbox file. The Mailboxes folder contains your On My Mac mailboxes (you may or may not have any of these).
Converting Mountain Lion iPhoto Library to Snow Leopard:
1: Control-click (Right Click) the Mountain Lion iPhoto Library file
2: Look for a folder named Masters
              3. The Masters folder contains all of your original, unmodified photos
              4. Copy the Masters folder to your backup HD as you will use it to import your photos into the Snow Leopard iPhoto Library
Converting Mountain Lion Contacts to Snow Leopard
              1. From Mountain Lion, export all of your contacts as vCards and save these on your backup HD
              2. These vCards will be imported into the Snow Leopard Address Book
Converting Mountain Lion Calendar to Snow Leopard
              1. From Mountain Lion, export all of your calendars as iCal files and save these on your backup HD
              2. These iCal files will be imported into the Snow Leopard iCal (Calendar)
Be sure to do all of this preparatory work first and that the backup files are usable.
Using the Snow Leopard installation DVD, restart your machine while pressing the C key to start from the DVD. Use Snow Leopard's Disk Utility to erase the hard drive completely overwriting it with zeros. (Be sure to select the hard drive itself and not just the Macintosh HD partition as you want to completely erase the HD). This will take about an hour and a half.
Next, Install Snow Leopard and then apply ALL software updates. You will need to repeat Software Update until Software Update displays the software is all up to date message. Next install iLife, iWork and all other Apple software and again, apply ALL software updates. The point is to get the standard Apple software running and configured before installing any other applications.
The iTunes library is the same for Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion so just restore your iTunes library from the backup and it will work.
At this point you can restore your Mail, iTunes, iPhoto Library, Contacts and iCal. When all of the Apple components are running correctly, install all other software and restore your user data.
I've been a programmer and in the IT industry for over 30 years and if there is one piece of advice I can give you it is this: take your time doing all of this and be sure that each component is working correctly before moving on to the next. It's tedious and time consuming but it can be done.
For me, the deal breaker with Mountain Lion is the way that saving files is implemented. This is a type of version control and version control has always been problematic just as syncing is. You never know what syncing really means and what is changed until it's too late.
Also, there was a lot of useful functionality removed in Mountain Lion and a number of things added that have no place in an operating system.

  • I shot a time lapse video by mistake, how can I slow it down to see it

HHow can Islow down a time lapse video to see it. Shot by mistake

A time lapse video records frames at a set interval. There is NO other information recorded between those frames.
You can slow it down and watch each frame for a longer period of time, but you will see no other information than what is originally recorded.

  • Why has OS X Mountain Lion caused my powerbook to slow way down?

Why has OS X Mountain Lion caused my powerbook to slow way down?  With OS X Lion  and Snow Leopard my laptop was very fast--now it seems to take foever to load or respond.  It there something I am missing?  Help, as I am very frustrated.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
