Lion and cloud query

Just wondering (again) . . .
I have asked before about speed increases in Lion (re Pages) and this is a further variation . . .
Some of our Pages documents are pretty long (big) and they can take a long time to open and print. I’m wondering if the new cloud computing feature can speed things up?
I have poked around the Internet and what I'm not understanding is if Cloud computing is simply a storage medium (like dropbox) or can you actually work on the Pages file that is in the 'Cloud' -- and what the performance will be on this type of workflow?
Thanks in advance for your time.

The cloud feature isn't designed to speed the app behavior.
It is supposed to give you a simple wauy to exchange datas between different devices. Absolutely no link between the two things.
At this time, given the quick and dirty way lion compatibility was embedded, it's a slowdowner.
And when the app will be optiomised, if will be slower with the new features than it would be without them.
We will not work upon the doc in the cloud but upon the doc stored in the machine and the datas will be send in the cloud.
The transmission between your machine and the cloud will always be slower than the transmission in the internals of your machine.

I just downloaded lion and cloud does not show up in my system preferences. Where is it hiding so I can set up icloud and see what lion is offering that is different from snow leopard.

I purchased Lion on the app program but that did not seem to update my software or my operating system. Curious. It showed up on my menu bar saying it was downloading then disappeared. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Suggestions where I should look to make sure it is installed (which clearly it isn't)

  • IPad wi-fi not working after Lion and cloud updating

Updated to LION OS 10.7.2 and updated iTunes today along with updating to the "cloud."
    Updated iPad to 5.0.1.
    Wi-fi is not working now.
On my desktop iMac I went into system preferences and went to "sharing" and have "internet sharing" checked. This is how it was working before.
I am trying to finish my iPad update. When I get to "wi-fi networks" it shows my iMac G5 but just keeps searching after I try to select it. It will not connect to my wi-fi. How do I get it to work????

I am using an intel i3. When I said above about my G5...that was just what my computer was named. I have a new iMac but when information was transferred it must have kept the name of it as my G5.

  • Forward and reply icons not showing since upgrade to lion and cloud account

The forward and reply icons (the arrows) are now usually not appearing after an email has been forwarded or replied to by me.  This all began after upgrade to Lion (no problem in snow leopard).  Anyone know a fix?  Spoke with apple on the phone, but they could not resolve the issue.  Thanks

Assuming you are using Safari for iCloud.com....
    Go to ~ / Library / Caches / com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac.
    Login to iCloud.com.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
It looks like Apple will have Lion available on USB drives for $69...

  • Recently installed lion and lost my I tunes library

    Hi
I have an I Mac I bought last Christmas, just got an I pad 2 and have an I phone 3GS .I was trying to get them all synced up using lion and I cloud,it seemed like it was all going well...I could view my whole music library at home on my I pad,and it played.later that day every time I tried to play a song on my I Mac I got an exclamation mark for some (many but random) songs and after thre hours on the phone with applecare and a "genius" helping me create a new folder ....I tunes 1 and transferring my 70 G of music into it with the intention of deleting my original file afterwards. I went out to dinner as it was taking a while ,when I got home 20G transferred ,and the rest is gone.....????i mean really gone form time machine,my hard drive and my external hard drive....
Any ideas so it doesn't happen again?

Are you sure its gone? What about in your Time Machine rollbacks? Search Time machine by accessing it through the Finder rather than the TM 'star wars' interface.
Alternatively, get a free copy of EasyFind and look for this folder
    'iTunes Media'
Select 'All Volumes' in the drop-down menu.
From the results, look for one that has a creation date prior to when your tried to sync. Double-click on it in EasyFind and see if it contains your missing content.

  • Will mountain lion and iOS 6 force me to use ICloud?

Reading the previews of mountain lion and ios 6, I get the impression that I'm going to be forced to use ICloud.  Is this true?  I don't want to be in the Cloud. And I don't want apps like Twitter mining information from or sharing information with, my Contacts.  Should I upgrade?  What happens if I don't?  I have a macbook running lion and an IPhone 4 running Ios 5.  Thanks.

I can just access Twitter through Safari to avoid that?  (Before you tell me that Twitter isn't that private, I'm on there with a pseudoname).
    Yes.
The integration of Twitter with Contacts is mostly about storing your contact Twitter and Facebook accounts much as you would store their phone numbers of email addresses.

  • LION and LION apps frustrations

I simply cannot understand why the Mail application in Lion deletes the "Address" or "Address Book" button, or the abllity to add it, in the outgoing message window.  Yes, the button is available in the Message Viewer window; but this requires one to leave the window in which the message being prepared, to go to a separate window, then to return to the message.  This is ridiculous.
The other alternative, remembering "Option-Command-A" is not satisfactory; nor is going to the menu bar to select "Address Window."  Put the darned Address Book button back in the outgoing message window, where it has resided very effectively for years.  Or, add it to the customize option in the message window so we can put it there ourselves.
This is just one of the many unnecessary and annoying changes implemented in Lion.  Despite the major features, some of which may be useful (many are not), the myriad minor changes that make things more difficult to find simply make Lion an annoyance I wish I had not purchased.  I am still trying to work with it, but I am seriously considering returning to Snow Leopard - with that, at least my Intuit (Quicken) and Photoshop Elements applications would still work (yes, I reboot to a drive with Snow Leopard to use these; yes, I plan to update to Photoshop 10 when it comes out; and yes, the decision not to update Quicken for Mac after deletion of Rosetta so that bill paying could still be done from within the application was a boneheaded choice by Intuit, not Apple).  But the bottom line is, switching to Lion has caused disruption for me in many things I (used to) use daily.
In addition, some of the new interfaces are simply ugly - the grayed out left-side bar in the Finder window, same in Mail - are awful.  Even the log-in screen background is ugly.
Perhaps Lion is supposed to prepare us for "Cloud computing" but I abhor the idea of sending my files and data off to someone's server, with no idea of where that server is, or what measures are taken to secure the data, or who else has access to it.  It is another feature I will not use.
Lion, and its supporting applications, are a disappointment - and I haven't even addressed the utter failure of Safari 5 to properly handle cookies (I addressed it at length elsewhere).  But basically, no matter what the security settings or the selection/non selection of "Private Browsing," Safari 5 accepts cookies from any site visited.  It's bad enough that the cookie handling selections differed unnecessarily and confusingly from previous versions; it doesn't matter, because they don't work!
    Bad job, Apple.

Thanks for your comments. Your opinion is really important to us.

That article is a bit dated.  Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question, with more updated information:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion or Mt. Lion.

  • IWeb and cloud options

Hi, I'm a longtime iWeb user. But I'm frustrated at the lack of progress with this product. Apple seems reluctant to do much (or I haven't heard of new updates for a long time) so I'm seeking an alternative that is cloud-based. Would you mind throwing out a few cloud-based options that you like? I want it for a website, not a blog, and want it to have good social media integration, slideshows, etc.
I've looked at Wix, Weebly and GoDaddy's new website builder, which is ridiculously confusing in my opinion. Any thoughts about these or other options? Looking for something that will most likely be around in a few years. Thanks and have a great weekend.

Apple stopped supported iWeb a long time ago after stopping selling the iLife boxed sets both in store and online. iWeb was really designed as part of .Mac and then MobileMe, which included one click web publishing.  Once they decided to get rid of MobileMe at the end of June last year and replace it with iCloud that does not offer web hosting, there was no need to for iWeb, so no longer supported or sold.  If you search this forum, you can find literally thousands of post regarding it.
As for replacements, Wix is no cloud based, but is based on the Wix servers - they are what are known as online web building services, of which there are a lot, including Weebly and Wix.  Wix is really not that hard to use and is flash based and you can publish a free site to the Wix servers or use the site with your own domain name.
Other alternatives include, RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express 6, Flux 4, WebAcappella 4 and Quck n Easy Website Builder.  There is also something called EasyWeb due to be released by Rage Software, but initially you will have to sign up for their hosting to be able to use it.  You can download free trials of most of these, so you can try before you buy.
There are also the Content Management Systems that you can look into using, such as Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.
At the moment though, iWeb still works with Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion, so continue to use it.  It may not work any longer once the new OS Mavericks comes along, but it does still work with Mountain Lion.
I have started using WebAcappella and like this, but mostly, I have moved to the CMS's and am currently using Joomla, as you can do more with this, such as membership sites etc.
