Lion and FCP/FXFactory
It seems that Lion doesn't work well with FCP. I'm seeing certain easy functions not responding as they did with Snow Leopard. And a lot of rendering (slow) that I've never had to do before with the same video formats. It's almost like Lion has forgotten certain parameter configurations.
When will there be an upgrade to Lion that fixes compatibility issues or is Apple leaving FCP to pay more attention to X?
Also when is Apple going to update FCPX to include all the generators and plug-ins from FXFactory Pro. I don't think I'll go to X unless I can get more 3rd party plug-ins. Anyone know more about this or can Apple shed some light on these question?

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL ROSETTA IN LION (or Mt. Lion)!
There have been reports of earlier users of FCS2 and FCE 3.5 who did attempt to install Rosetta in Lion some time ago, now experiencing "unexplained" crashes and other symptoms of unstable systems, since applying updates to their Macs (updates of Lion or upgrades to Mt. Lion).
If you have already attempted to install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion, please review this thread on how to IMMEDIATELY remove Rosetta from your operating system:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/22004227#22004227
The SAFEST way to install FCS2 or FCE 3.5 into Lion is to use Pacifist, although there is also a method using Terminal explained by Jeremy Johnstone on his blog:

Is there something very wrong with Lion and Fcp x or what?
I have just spent a very frustrating two weeks editing a one hour fifteen minute project on FCP X with Lion as the operating system. Every edit session has been plagued with crashes. My mac is a 21.2 inch, with an I7 processor and 12gig of ram which I bought the middle of this year. I had set my computer up with two partitions, one with Lion and the other with Snow leopard. This morning, in an effort to improve the terrible instability of FCP X under Lion I decided to try it under Snow Leopard......What an unbelievable difference.....I've been editing for the last three hours now throwing all kinds of clips and effects and so forth at the timeline and have not experienced one crash. What is going on here? How can Lion and FCP X be so incompatible?

You don't mention whether this one hour and fifteen minutes long project consisted of just one FCP X project when you experienced problems with FCP X and Lion?
You also don't mention how long the project was that you edited successfully with Snow Leopard. If, as I suspect, this was a very short 'test' project, that would make sense. FCP X does not cope well with long projects.
I use Lion exclusively but I keep my projects to a maximum of 30 minutes (preferably no more than 20 mins). If the total programme is longer, I make create several FCP X projects - each being a 'chapter' of the main programme. When finished, I make compound clips of all the 'chapters' then I paste them into a new (full length) project.
I'm not pretending FCP X is perfect, but for me at least, it's very workable as long as you understand it's weaknesses. I have 16 GB RAM and since I upgraded from the 8 GB I had previously, it's made a huge difference.
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Other ways to improve performance:
Create optimised media.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project library and put any projects you are not working on currently, in there. (Twirl it closed to hide them).
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.

New Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP.
I got a new Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP that worked fine in SL. Is it not compatible? Is it really a PowerPC program??? I'm a videographer and rely on this software and to spend $300 to continue to use it after spending a lot more for this software 4 years ago! Tell me this is not the case and there is a solution to installing FCP.
How to run FCP 6 (FCS 2) under Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 (FCS 2) is a PPC app. The Programs themselves are Intel. If your trying to install FCP 6 (FCS 2) this work-around will work...
First you need to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard OS installation disc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html
After doing that you can install FCP 6 (FCS 2). Remember, after installing FCP 6 (FCS 2) you need to apply the updates. This has been discuss many times in the Final Cut Studio forum.
If your trying to install FCP version 5.1 (FCS 1) (a PPC app) and below your out of luck....
If you need further help, here is the URL for the Final Cut Studio forum:

I have recently purchased MacBook Pro with Mac OSX 10.7.3 Lion and I would like to install Final Cut Pro 6 Studio2, and it came up with this error: 'you can't open application FinalCutProStudio.mpkg because PowerPc apps are no longer supported......Is there a way to run FCP6 on lion withoput this error? Any help would be appreciated.....
Hi Shane,
Just one more quesiton re: this topic, I am looking to get rosetta but do not have Leopard or Snow Leopard...
I read that it is not on Snow Leopard only on Leopard....so do I need to get only Leopard? Can u advise?
Alternatively I do have Mac OS X Tiger so is it on this and can I install it from here?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge here, just trying to get my FCP 6 up and running asap....
Best Rgds. -
Lion and Final Cut Pro X.
Anybody got it working? Final Cut Pro X crashes and system looks so slow, like it wold be 10 years old. All started after update to Lion.
Hey Apple, what's up?
I do a lot of video edits, but now it impossible to work with Final Cut Pro X at all. Too many crashes.
Every day I think more and more about return to Premiere Pro.
Lots of people waiting for updates.Same problem, Lion totally stuffed everything up. (even though the problem first surfaced with Snow Leo - at least that time we could switch of automatic graphic switching as a work around)
Apple have replaced two logic boards so far along with memory and something else I don't know I am so fed up.
I Have not been able to use my computer for over a month now because of Apples incompetance with this issue.
I've wiped and reinstalled Lion three times now. Ran the computer with a clean new Lion install and only FCP installed. BSOD.
Two logic boards later as mentioned and three visits to Apple having to leave it with Apple for them to come up with "it's software related" as there finding - so this is my problem apparently. The joke of this being that before I left it with them this last time they ran a diagnostic with the specific purpose of rulling out software as a cause.
Apples new OS Lion makes Apple software not work on a Apple computer - and this is the consumers problem and not Apples?.
Come on Apple, Really?
You can do better than that.
Admit theres a problem, and replace our useless aluminium bricks if you cant work it out? -
FCP 7 and FCP-X on same partition: what problems are caused?
I'm trying to figure out if the performance issues I'm having with FCP-X can be remedied, or if the problem is just buggy software. Apparently, even a newer, faster, more powerful Mac is not the answer, as I read complaints from people with new, suped-up Mac Pros who say the software slows to a crawl. Sounds familiar to me, but I'm on iMacs and a MacBook Pro -- all my Macs are 3-4 years old, and are from that Core 2 Duo era, not Quad Core processors. All my Macs are maxed out at 4 GB or RAM. So I'm certain new machines are in my future. But judging from what some people say about their newer, faster machines, I'm not entirely convinced that it would solve the problem I'm having with FCP-X.
There are numerous threads here reporting sluggish performance (perpetual spinning beach balls) relating to a memory leak or a problem relating to FCP-X's usage of memory (some say it happens worse in Lion). Is that the problem? And if it is, why hasn't Apple addressed it?
Then there is this matter of having FCP-7 (FCP Studio) and FCP-X installed on the same partition. Apple's "Best Practices" article clearly states that it's best to have the two applications installed on separate partitions. Only problem (for me) is, I already had FCP-7 installed on the primary partition. When I purchased FCP-X (the day it first became available), I hadn't read that article, so naturally, the software got installed...you guessed it...on the primary partition. And yes, I could uninstall FCP-7 (FCP Studio), create a new partition, and then re-install it. But I remember how long it took to install FCP Studio (about 4 hours, as I recall), so I've put off the ordeal of heading down that road.
So I'm wondering.......
What problems are known to occur as a result of having FCP-7 and FCP-X installed on the same partition? Would my sluggish performance be related to this? Or would going to the trouble of uninstalling FCP-7, re-partitioning, then re-installing FCP-7 (FCP Studio) into its own play space, only be a waste of time?
What evidence is there that this co-install is the culprit causing sluggish performance?
What ARE the problems that the co-install causes? I've never heard anyone address this specifically. When FCP X first came out, Apple recommended keeping FCS 3 on a separate partition, so I did that.
Recently I did a clean reinstall or Lion and installed FCS 3 as normal, followed by FCP X 10.0.3.
During the FCP X install, FCP 7 was moved to a new folder called Final Cut Studio.
'Studio' and FCP X now work happily on the same partition - but I have not tried opening both at the same time!
Just now, both applications are the most stable they have ever been.
These are my standard tips for improving performance:
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Other ways to improve performance:
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
Contrary to what Ian said above, the biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

I have a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, Early 2011(2.3 GHz Intel Core i5) with 4GB memory, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB graphics card. I am running OS 10.9.4 on it. What do I need to upgrade on the MacBook Pro to get it to work efficiently with FCP X? Most of my work with FCP X is done on an older MacPro tower which uses Lion with FCP X 10.0.9. How do I get this older version of FCP X from the App store so that I can do work on both machines?
Just as you would copy any other file.
Plug in a hard drive or thumbdrive and drag the FCP X icon from the Applications folder onto it.
Wait until it is copied onto the hard drive etc., disconnect the hard drive and reconnect it to your MBP, and copy FCP X onto your MBP desktop.
You can then put it into your Applications folder.
It's also a good idea to keep a backup copy as you can never be sure whether you will be able to download it from the App Store . . . only the latest version is normally available.
Your backup copy could be on a hard drive, memory stick, SD card or burned to a DVD. -
Exporting Reference Movies with Lion and QT X
Has anybody else had issues exporting Reference Movies from FCP7 under Lion?
When we open a Reference Movie created with FCP7/Lion in QT X 10.1 (the version that ships with Lion), we're only able to see the first frame of the movie, followed by black/blank video, and audio only.
Curiously, QT7 (on Lion) and QT X 10.0 (on Snow Leopard) are able to play these movies without a problem. However, a number of 3rd-party applications and devices that we use in our facility (most notably an Omneon Spectrum) choke on the reference movies in a similar manner to QT X 10.1.
We've got a support ticket open with Omneon, although they claim to have never heard of the problem, and are currently picking their way through the issue as well. However, there are scattered reports of others who are having similar problems.
For the sake of thoroughness, it's worth mentioning that this is a brand-new Mac Pro with Lion 10.7.2, and FCP 7.0.0; both fresh installs (apparently downgrading to SL is unsupported on this machine). We tried patching FCP to 7.0.3 with Pro Application Update 2010-02, which did not resolve the problem. We've since reverted to 7.0.0, to rule out the patch as the culprit. The reference movies in question do not contain any edits that would require a render, and everything's stored on a NAS that's accessible to the whole office (hence the fact that we're able to view the files on our Snow Leopard machines.
Picking apart the reference movie using Apple's Atom Inspector shows one curious detail in the alias data inside 'dref' atom inside of the reference movie (which is how QT figures out where the original media is). Rather than being a simple file pointer, the alias actually contains a whole bunch of information, including the "relative" path to the video data, relative to the original location of the reference movie, as well as the absolute path of that file, starting from the root of the filesystem. Both of these paths are presented in "Mac" and "Unix" formats, ie:
Mac: volume:folder1:folder2:filename
Unix: /volume/folder1/folder2/filename
Key difference is the use of colons, rather than slashes to separate folders in the path. At least, that was the key difference prior to Lion. We've noticed that, while the SL machines export reference movies with paths that resemble the above, our Lion machine generates:
Mac: volume:folder1: folder2: filename
Unix: /volume/folder1/folder2/filename
(Notice the spaces)
When we attempt to play the movies with our Omneon applications or in QT X 10.1, our NAS throws a whole bunch of 'File not Found' errors. Presumably, those spaces are the culprit. Removing the spaces with a hex editor completely mangles the QT movie, and renders it compltetely unplayable.
Unfortunately, the alias data inside the dref atom doesn't appear to be a standard Mac OS alias, and the only documentation of the alias file format (linked above) is hilariously out of date. Presently, the format is undocumented, and it appears that developers are discouraged from interacting with the files directly. In other words, I have no way of knowing whether or not the spaces are actually significant, or are a completely innocuous and documented part of the file format.
Has anybody encountered anything similar, or found a solution? I'm at a bit of a dead-end here, and would welcome any advice.I totally understand where you're coming from; Apple's support of some of QuickTime's more advanced features has unfortunately been waning for some time now.
Avoiding the buggy parts of the program is always a good strategy, although the ability to quickly export reference movies is something that is absolutely vital to our workflow. Simply put, losing these files is an absolute dealbreaker.
Two things seem to be going on... FCP on Lion appears to be generating slightly malformed reference movies, and QT X 10.2 seems to be freaking out when it tries to play back those movies (while prior versions are seemingly able to work around the problem). I suppose this could have something to do with the introduction/evolution of QTKit and AV Foundation on Lion, although I'm surprised that this would be affecting FCP7, which was built around older APIs. -
I am running Parallel 7 and my quick books on SL. I am buying a new computer with Lion. After installing Parallel 7 can I just replace all the files and quick books to Lion? What files do I need to transfer?
Thganks.I have a clone drive (using Super Duper). Is this new feauture in Lion? I never heard the migration possibilties. So it will insert serials, activation #,? Some of the plugins in FCP require online registration. For example anytime I start my FCP it checks with the developer the serials.
I was to clone my new computer with Lion and make it SL, only because of time consuming. I hated to go backwards, in spite of some photoshop plugins are not Lion compatible.
You just saved me a ton's of time. Thanks a million! -

I downloaded mountain lion and then the new office suite (word, ppt, excel) but now when I try to display one of my ppt's it says 'ppt cannot open the file...the file may be corrupt, in use, not a type recognized by ppt etc.." how can I fix it?? HELP
Did you try to open teh fle by double-clicking its icon? If the file was made with an older version of Office, you may get that message. Try opeing PP and, from its "File" menu, see if you can open the ppt. I've foundthat often gets around that message and then yo ucan save the file from the newer version.
If that doesn't work, consider asking in the Microsoft Office: Mac forums here:

PowerPoint is not an Apple product and it seems a lot of people around here avoid Office. -
Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.
Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck. As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.” As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#. Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X. -
The difference between Lion and Mountain Lion
Can some one explain to me the difference between Lion and Mtn Lion? I'm currently 10.6.8 Is it beneficiall for me to upgrade?
Mountain Lion is an enhanced version of previous OS X and so that is Mavericks.
About upgrading it all depends on what your needs are and if your hardware supports it.

Please check also applications compatibility. From Lion onward, you cannot run PPC application. -
I used to use this feature multiples times a day as it was a great way to look up all correspondance that a person had sent through.
This option is gone now with mountain lion and I am wondering why as it was great! you just had to click on an email address and you could select looking it up within mail.Hi There Linc Davis,
Wow, you are the best.
Yip this is what the website looks like. Great job Linc Davis.
Not surprised that the "Shop" tab is missing. Darn.
Well can you try to access it's "sister" website: astralmusic.com and astralmusicshop.com?
Since you are awesome with the "Flash" can you investigate if this website has a issue withis this "Flash" too?
Please Linc Davis -
I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance
Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP. Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear. Select the 'restore' icon on the right. When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility. Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
Ciao.

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to SL OS 10.6.8 and now have pink lines around the desktop borders and some menus. There is also a horrible red colour that appears in the background of photobooth and parts of Safari. The screen saver looks like an
