Lion and PowerPC apps

I was aware that lion doesn't have Rosetta support for PowerPC apps, but it is affecting me in a way I didn't anticipate.  I have historic Word docs that I need to access from time to time — I didn't think through the obvious problem that they are PPC docs.  Is there any solution other than to keep a computer that runs Snow Leopard or prior?

Unless you created these documents with Word 5.1 (from back in the System 7.x days) you will be able to open them with the current version of Word, from Office for Mac 2011. You've also got a few other options, such as opening them in TextEdit, or Pages, or one of the free office alternatives such as OpenOffice that has been suggested.
What version of Word were they created in?

    Is your data backed up?
Are you running any non-Apple system optimization tools?

  • Lion and PowerPc applications

Be aware if you upgrade to Lion,
any PowerPc applications that you were running in Snow Leopard are no longer supported !
    and no easy solution.......

    Appleworks can be converted to iWork, at least for WP, SS and Presentation;
Just drag WP file onto the Pages icon in the Dock, or a SS file onto the numbers icon. Likewise presentation files onto the Keynote icon.
Or you can right-click on the file and use the "open with" dialogue to choose the relevant application.
    Databases are less easy.
You can export AW DB files as ASCII text files which can then be imported into Numbers. Not ideal, but OK for simple lists.
You can then export them as .csv files which can be imported to most third-party database applications.
For drawing and paint files, Intaglio looks OK, but pricey. You may find others with a bit of searching, but that's the only current app I found that claims to open AW draw and paint files (as distinct from MacPaint and MacDraw).

  • Upgrading to Lion and losing apps

Here's my dilema... I really want to upgrade to Lion for obvious reason, but am a little nervous about losing all my apps. For instance, I bought the new Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite on student discounts, so I only recieved one activation code for those. If I have to reinstall those apps after installing Lion, will that one activation code still work?
Would it be better to go the route of backing up everything to Time Machine? I hope I'm correct when I assume I won't have to activate any apps transferred through TIme Machine.
I would appreaciate help from anyone who can clear this up for me!
    Thank you in advance!

What's a body to do?  Apple may be shafting me by dropping support for older applications but they finally satisfied me by coming out with the new MacBook Air, so I got me a 13"/256 GB storage/4 GB RAM/i7 birthday present to myself, complete with Lion and I will go ahead and install Windows 7/Parallels so I can run Quicken 2011 for Windows.
This machine is also a compromise--I have an original iPad and find myself very frustrated by the lack of Flash support--too many of the web sites I use seem to have embedded Flash videos or other Flash graphics, but I need a highly portable computer to take with me when I travel and I want to be able to run both Flash and Quicken on it so I've been waiting for the new Airs.  And, while portability said "11 inch model", the likelihood of running Windows in a window on my MacOS screen (and watching movies) and the need for room to install both OSs led me to the 13 inch with 256 GB of space.
So I will be running Quicken henceforth on Windows and, I suppose, Turbotax as well.

  • Lion and "powerPC applications no longer supported" with hp Office jet printer

I have an HP office jet 5510 all in one printer that is no longer compatible with my recent installation of Lion.  The "powerPC applications are no longer supported" prompt comes up when I try to open the app on my dashboard.  Do I need to buy a new printer? To have it be compatible with Lion? If I do, which type of printer and software do I need to be sure of to make the two compatible with Lion?

    Elizabezzle wrote:

Possibly.  Check the HP website and make sure your drivers up to date.  If you need a new printer, look for one that says it is compatible with Lion.

  • Lion and PowerPC

Hi, I have Snow Leopard, and I don't know if Lion is better than Snow Leopard.
Anyway I have thought to update my operative system.
However, several applications (the powerPC applications) don't work in Lion because Lion hasn't got Rosetta, and this can't be installed on Lion.
So I would like to know if there`s a solution to run the powerPC applications on Lion.
I also would like to know if Lion is really better than Snow Leopard and why?
    thanks.

No you can not run PPC apps on lion. as of now, there is no workaround for that.
Lion being better is strictly opinion at this point. No major changes to performance have been made. In fact, you'll need more RAM to run Lion then you did SL. It's more intense, and is made for the new really powerful machines that have come out the last couple of years.
So you're best bet is to go to an apple store or somewhere that has Lion up for demo and see if the new features are something that is worth any troubleshooting you may have to go through getting new support for the apps that have been not updated since PPC became nearly obsolete. most applications that were usefull for PPC have been updated to support the intel chips. If not, write to the vendor of that software and tell them you want a port for intel macs. You also might want to google for ports to intel machines for some of your PPC software. Some of them have been ported by fans to work on intel macs since the original companies either are not around anymore to update it.
simple google the ppc app's name and "intel port" and see if some of your apps you were trying to keep have an intel port of the software that will run on intel machines.

  • Is this a "safe" way to upgrade to lion and transfer apps/data to new imac?

I have an older imac running 10.6.8 and I am considering buying a new one.
I read a link with guidleines to upgrade to lion. My question is:
After upgrading to lion, I am going to buy a new imac and want to move to the new imac with the least inconvenience. I have a lot of music app/usb interfaces so the time to reconfigure everything would be very time consuming.
So is the "safe" way to do it?
Do a time machine backup of current configuration.
Follow the link I saw outlining upgrading from 10.6.8 to lion on my current imac.
Get everything working again on the current imac with mountain lion.
Do a time machine backup of the lion configuration.
Get the new imac and on first boot, elect to restore from the time machine backup wiping out what came installed on the new imac.
Another time machine backup on the new imac.
    I should be done?
or is there a better /safer way?
I have been putting this off for almost year because of the number of apps I am running and devices I have connected. a short list.
file servers off firewire 800 and 400 ( I know I will need the thunderbolt to firewire adapters).
approx 12-18 usb devices all connected either directly or daisy chained through usb controllers connected to usb controllers.
    about 10 external USB drives.
    vmware
    midi interfaces for piano/guitar.
    m-audio fast track ultra
    multiple DVD/blu-ray reader/writers
Hence my concern for a smooth transition
    thanks in advance.

There is really no need to update the older iMac running 10.6 to Lion, especially if you have multiple backups of your User Data. You can easliy move or migrate data from any one of your External HDs or Server to the new iMac.
    As for your current iMac:
If you plan on selling the older iMac, Lion is not transferable and you will want to sell it with a clean install of 10.6 and let the new owner upgrade.
If you plan on keeping the older iMac around for others to use and it supports Mountain Lion, then in my humble opinion Mountain Lion is the better upgrade.
    As for your other devices:
    • Yes, Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter
    • Yes, external USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices are backwards compatible
    • Sorry, I don't use vmware
    • Sorry, I don't use midi interfaces
    • Sorry, I don't use m-audio
    • Yes, my external DVD drives work with various Mac's running 10.6 thru 10.8
Sorry I can't better answer your Audio questions. If no one else comes along with the answers here, then you might try starting another ASC question focused on those transitions.

  • OS lion and kindle app download error, why?

I've downloaded os lion for my mac but it always ends up in an error message upon installation.  Meanwhile, my kindle app was ok these past few days but then it suddenly crashed and i couldn't re-open it anymore. You're certrain your Mac qualifies for Mountain Lion?  >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Make sure there's enough available space on the install disk to install Mountain Lion (4.35GB file).
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then click Storage from the menu.
Make sure there's never less than 15% available spacce.

  • I just bought 2 $15 iTunes cards to buy Lion and the App Store says I have insufficient funds.

In the app store it says Lion costs 29.99. is there some taxes that I'm not aware of? I have never had a problem redeeming cards for iTunes or the App Store before.

If there isn't sufficient credit from your iTunes card then the balance is charged to your credit or debit card. If you don't have a credit card setup in your iTunes billing payment information then the purchase will not go through. Yes, taxes do apply depending on your residence.
Click Account under Quick Links right side of the Mac App Store window.
Click Edit to the right of Payment Information. If you update your billing info make sure and click Done when you are finished.

  • Mac to SOX Lion and PowerPC application

I have updated my Mac to SOX Lion but now I can't run PowerPC application, they are not longer supported. How can I solve this problem?

    Hello:
I am not being flippant, but you will need to update those applications.  OS X 10.7 does not use "Rosetta" (the routine that translated Power PC applications).  Many software developers have provided free updates.  I ran into that same problem myself (I am not alone!).  I was using an old version of Microsoft's Office (2004).  My options were to buy the new one or switch to Apple's iWork.  I switched as Word and Pages work together seamlessly.

  • OS X Lion and Adobe apps

I have heard of an Adobe patch to make earl;ier versions of Acrobat Pro, et al usable with OS X Lion. Does anyone know of such?

    Hi Dave,
Yes.... SOME, but not all third-party apps provide this functionality.
Edit to add: Not ALL Apple apps are showing the 'Assign To' menu as pointed out in the link you posted. Apple Preview & TextEdit provide the same options as CS6 apps. Not sure if Apple needs to get this working with Adobe apps or if it's in Adobe's court. I have also posted this in the Apple forums. Hope this helps.

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!
