Lion ate ALL my Mail

This is NOT good.  Granted I keep tens of thousands of messages in dozens of folders, but they're all important to me in one way or another.
With the Mail conversion that took place as part of my Lion install (conversion by itself took an hour or two), I was left with a message that said my Mail index was screwed, but that it would be recreated after the next restart.  Not so! Or at least there's no evidence that anything is happening. When I launch Mail, no windows or messages appear... just the bar at the top.  If I right-click the icon in the dock, it says "application not responding".
I know that "application not responding" doesn't always mean that nothing is happening, so I'll probably wait overnight to see if anything has developed by morning.
Anyway, I neeed to prepare for the worst. How do I back out of this new Mail app altogether, so that I can restore my email from Time Machine?

Just a quick update to anyone who may still be following this tonight.
Timothy, I really think that your problem is totally different from mine, so if deivy's suggestion for your issue doesn't work for you, you might get more responses by opening a new topic.
deivy... yes I know there is Help documentation if I could access it. The new Mail is dead to me, including Help. Thanks for copying over the relevant sections.  I tried that without success.
I wish there was something... anything... displayed when I launch the new mail. All I get is the standard bar of menus at the top.. none of which will open. And no windows at all.  You'd think that if it couldn't find mail, it would act like it was starting from scratch... waiting for me to set everything up.
Unless there are any further suggestions tonight, here's my plan...
1. Quit being impatient. At midnight, I'll shut down all apps, do a restart, and only launch the new Mail. I'll repeat deivy's instructions again if necessary to eliminate those files. Then I'll wait to see if it has done anything by morning.
2. Failing that, I'll try Rodney's suggestion on the Time Machine restore, but if the new Mail is totally unresponsive now, I'm sceptical about it reactivating and attempting the conversion again. We'll see.
3. Download and install Lion again. Since I haven't done an OS install from a download before, I assume that the installer isn't still sitting on my Mac somewhere? I'll have to do it from the Mac store again?
More to report tomorrow.

    Buffzap,
Make sure that you choose Mail>View>Show Mailbox List, then hover your cursor over one of the subordinate mailbox categories, and you should see "Show." Next click on "Show."

  • While downloading Mountain Lion I was asked to connect my mail account (gmail) to the cloud. I did so. Once I entered mail after Mtn Lion installed all sub-mail boxes I had set up disappeared. How can I get them back.

While downloading Mountain Lion I was asked to connect my maol account to the cloud. I did so. Mtn Lion was installed successfully. When I openned my mail all of the sub-folders I had created are gone along with the emails in them. How can I restore them or does the cloud wipe them out. Thanks

You may have to open Mail, go to the upper left corner of the screen and click on the word Mail, open Preferences, click on Accounts, and make sure your Gmail account is still fully set up properly with all proper account and incoming and outgoing Mail Servers properly completed.  When you added iCloud capability it may have upset the account settings for Gmail.
    Hope this helps

  • Mtn Lion ate my emails/folders!!!

WTH?!? I "upgraded" to Mtn Lion, and all my Mail folders with stored emails are gone??? Can I get them back?? Obviously I was saving valuable emails . . . do ya think?!?

If you open your Mail app, just to the left of each of the "Inbox", Sent" and Trash" folders in the left hand column, when in "Classic View" format, is a little triangle.  Click on each of those three triangles and the folders should Open, showing the folders inside of them, which should be your old email folders with your old emails.  Let us know if this does not solve the issue.
    Hope this helps

  • 10.6.8 update ate all my sent mail!

Never happened in all my years on Mac: The update to 10.6.8 disappeared the contents of all Sent Mail Messages folders. Why and how would it do such a thing?
All POP mail accounts, three GMail and one Comcast. Wondering if making IMAP accounts will bring them back ... but really, Apple, ***? I prepare for updates, keep a clean, updated machine—MacBook Pro 17"—repair permissions after updates ...
    Thanks for any clues/advice,
    Connie

Same problem as humorzo.  My inbox consists of 10 different email accounts, including MobileMe, Gmail, other IMAP and POP based accounts.  NEVER had any issues with Mail or OS upgrades until 10.6.8.  Literally did two hours of email composing and sending off, only to realize that NOT one left the building and there is NO record in the DRAFT, OUTBOX or SENT Mail folders of any of the emails I sent.  As humorzo very aptly states - 10.6.8 with Mail ATE all my sent mail.
I tried rebuilding mail boxes.  It has now otoally screwed up my SENT MAIL - more missing than before rebuilding, dates screwed up.
NOT Happy - deleted mail prefs file (after copying original to a safe spot).  That didn't help - so reinstated original mail prefs file.
Checked DIsk Utility.  Drive is fine - repaired disk permissions.  All to no avail.
Apple - you have a problem here - please work this out ASAP.

No, but that does not mean that you should not backup first, unless you like taking chances that is.

  • Can I use Unix symbolic links between Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard Mail folders?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I partitioned my iMac HD to have two partitions: Macintosh HD has Mountain Lion; I reinstalled Snow Leopard on Macintosh HD 2. Best part: you can access your user-created files from EITHER disk partition. But not so OS X Mail. I wanted to revert to Snow Leopard, since I don't like the iOS-like Mountain Lion (swipe THIS!), but Mail is a problem since all my Snow Leopard Mail was successfully migrated over to Mountain Lion during upgrade.
Is there a way to use Unix symbolic links between actual OS X Mail folders in Mountain Lion and OS X Mail in Snow Leopard?
It seems the (trial) symbolic link created pointed to a blank file.

It's not a matter of "letting" each maintain its own database, William. By default, I believe, I have no control over what gets written. In fact, if there were a way to set a preference that says, use this index named "spotlightindexSL' only [while in SL], that might solve my problem. Then when booting up in ML, it would just go after the index it last made.
My guess is that while I am in ML or SL and not the other, there are all sorts of changes to files and the system freaks and says "Oh, now look at what a mess I've made — there are all sorts of files unaccounted for. Now I have to rebuild the whole thing."
I have 2 had drives in my Mac, both 500GB. One (Working Disk) has no operating system and all my files, and the other drive is partitioned 470/30gb with SL on the 470 and ML in the 30. When I restart in either OS, the auto-start Indexing as if for the very first time, and do both hard drives (in total: 3 partitions of files, not counting the ML Restore partition).
I know it all uncoventionally — just wanted to see what my $20 new OS will cost me in software upgrades, in particular my $1800 Adobe Design Suite CS4 and a few others.

  • OSX Lion doesn't send mail but save it in the draft

I have upgraded OSX Leopard to Lion and I have this strange problem.
I have 4 business mail account and all receive mail correctly one of them doesn' send the email. I can edit the message, and when i press send, the message disappear, nothing happened, after ten second It appear in the draft folder. At this point all the buttons on the message are disable and I can't do anyting only delete the message.
I use the same SMTP server for all the account and the same configuration.
What can I do to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

I was having problems sending email with Gmail through Mail a few days ago.  I honestly don't know what fixed the problem but I removed my Gmail account and re-added it and that seemed to do the trick.  No settings were changed, to my knowledge, but perhaps something weird happened during the update to Lion.
This was done with an IMAP account so I didn't lose any email through removing the email account.  If you are using a POP3 email account then you might need to copy your email from the problem account to a local folder just in case removing the email account causes you to lose the content of your inbox.

  • How can I transfer all my mail and mail boxes to another computer using the same Mac OS 10.7.5?

I have 2 computers with the same OS 10.7.5. How can I transfer all my Mail & Mail boxes from one to the other?

    Hello Gene,
It sounds like you would like to transfer your mail and mailboxes from one computer to another.  I recommend exporting the mailboxes from one Mac and then importing them to the destination Mac.  You can find steps in the following articles:
    Lion Mail: Export mailboxes

  • Mail not downloading all e-mails from hotmail

    Hi,
I have a MacBook pro 15inch running latest updates on OSx lion. I am having a real problem with mail application and my hotmail account. I have setup the hotmail account in mail and it downloads any new mails I receive but it does not sync any of the sent mails.
I also have an iPad which I use to send and receive emails and every time I reply someone using the iPad, there is no record of it on my mac if I replied to that person or not. Whereas if I reply to anyone using the mac, iPad shows all sent mails in sent folder.
Another problem I had (which is not currently main issue) is that occasionally it asked to put your password in for iCloud and hotmail account even if i check save to keychain.
Is there any way I can get my mac to sync all folders from my hotmail to mac? iPad does it with no problem..
    Thanks in advance:)

I'm having the same issue and have tried deleting the account and adding again but I only have emails that came in yesterday after Mavericks installed. My thousands of emails from the server did not load. They are everywhere else but on the updated Mavericks computer.

Please always post your system when you have a query - in this case it makes a considerable difference to the answer.
Is your system pre-Lion? Earlier systems are not compliant with iCloud but you can set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger

  • IOS 8.1 Does Not Download All iCloud Mail/ Keeps Cache?

    Hello,
I have setup and enabled an iCloud e-mail account on all of my devices and was successfully able to use the Mail app in Mac OS X Yosemite to copy mail from my Yahoo! inbox to my iCloud inbox.  All e-mail copied from Yahoo! Mail appears in the OS X Yosemite Mail app as well as in the iCloud.com site, however, my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5 both running iOS 8.1 does not download all of the mail from iCloud.  I have tried the following on both iOS 8.1 devices with no success.
    - Disable iCloud mail and re-enable
    - Sign completely out of iCloud and sign in again, then reconfigure all iCloud services including mail
The result of both steps is that the incomplete list of e-mail in the iCloud inbox just reappears in the Mail app instead of downloading from iCloud again.  It looks like the incomplete list of e-mail is stored on the iOS device and signing out of or disabling iCloud mail just hides it; re-enabling or signing in merely shows it again.  This appears to work differently than my Yahoo! Mail configuration where if I sign out of or delete the Yahoo! account and reconfigure, iOS downloads a fresh copy of all e-mail in the inbox and all other folders.  Here are my two questions:
    - How do I get my iPhone and iPad Air 2 to download ALL e-mail from my iCloud mail account?
    - Are my suspicions true? Does iOS actually store a cached copy of iCloud mail on the device when the service is disabled and just "redisplays" it when re-enabled?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem. My iCloud it's a mess since the iOS 8.1 update.
Probably your iCloud isn't working too.

  • Not getting all my mail

I have an Imac and an Ipad WIFI and use a Time machine base station WIFI. I also have two email accounts, both on the same ISP. The Imac is not turned on most of the time and I use the Ipad for most of my daily computing. The problem is the Ipad is not getting all my mail messages from the server. Whenever I start up my IMAC, I get more messages that the Ipad received. I have done a full reset on the Ipad, but as yet can't fix the problem.
    Any ideas??

Very long shot - which might have something to do with it. The downloads are set to 25, and I don't refresh the load button. However, that is only part of the answer I think. This morning, I sent out two email messages to a group, of which I am on the list, and one my Ipad I received only one. Alos, one of the things that happens is that my wife is the other account. And we belong to a community which has a server which bounces email to all members of the community, when we send the server an email. Quite ofen, one of us will get the mail, but not the other, and it is not consistent as to who gets the email.
    Fun isn't it???
