Lion closes all previously open desktop windows on startup

I cannot figure out why Lion closes all of my open desktop windowas on shoutdown/restart, or how to prevent it.  Can anyone help?

Right.  It works as advertised.
What I am talking about are my open desktop windows.  The finder is closing all open (folder) windows each time I restart or shut down my machines.

  • How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?

How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?  I want to wipe all open files, since that seems to be the most efficient way to close lots & lots of open files (that build up over the course of normal activities)

One way is to always quit all applications before you shut down.
An easy way to do this (although in my own experience it doesn't seem to always work perfectly) is to simply hit CMD + TAB + Q and hold down all three keys.
When you do that the computer will cycle through all open apps and close them. If there are any open files that haven't been saved, it won't close them. So you should save everything you want to save before you hit CMD + TAB + Q.

  • Closing one of the opening windows tries to close all tabs on another window

I opened two windows, one with multiple tabs and another is no tab, when closing a window with no tab, a prompt window appears and ask if I want to close all tabs on another window. Prompt window appeared twice. Is this a bug?

I also had this issue and disabling the Awesome Screenshot add-on fixed it for me too. Its not doing it anymore after disabling that plugin. Thanks for the tip!!!

  • Before closing down the machine, how can I close all the open programs?

Now that the iMac automauically starts up with the programs in use when closing, I find that this is delaying my start.
There must be a shortcut to close all the open programs before closing the machine.
    Kindly advise.

If by 'closing' the machine you mean shutting it down, there is a checkbox in the Shutdown confirmation window which is preset to re-start all apps at startup which were open when the machine was shut down. Uncheck that item in the Shutdown confirmation window.
Unfortunately you'll need to do that each time you shut the machine down.

  • Close all the open Application in one-shot ?

Is there are any way to close all the open application in one shot in ipad rather than double-click the home button and close the apps one by one.

In principle, I agree with you...
But it appears that reality is not perfect. I observed on iPhone 3 that memory could be pretty clogged from time to time and I needed to restart it to free up memory and get it back to original speed again. It all depends on which apps you are running. Some appears to eat more memory than others. On iPhone 4, it appears to be less of a problem and I have seen that later iOS releases also makes this less of a problem. I only have a first generation iPad, but I have seen that later iOS releases have improved memory handling significantly there as well. However, it appears to be a good idea to reboot the device after a week or two just to flush the memory. I can't prove this theory scientifically, but I do see a difference in memory usage when doing this.
The reason I actually tried "Process Killer" was a tip that it addressed the problems many of us encountered with the first iOS 5 release: frequent crashes and slow performance. After the pretty quickly released iOS 5 update, that wes pretty much solved, but occasionally killing processes actually helped me at that point, It made both my devices more stable.
The original question was about battery performance, there I don't think that the amount of processes running is the key. A much better way of getting more out of your battery is shutting off location services in apps where they are not really needed. I would guess that turning off push notofications for as many apps as possible helps as well.
Also, turn off the Personal Hotspot on iPhone when it's not needed!

  • After update, opens all previously opened pdfs

This happens on both XP and Vista with Reader 9. After doing an automatic online update of Reader, then next time Reader is opened, it tries to open all previously opened PDFs. Of course this slams the machine while Reader is trying to open all of those files. This happens whether attemptig to start Reader by opening a file or starting Reader directly. This is unacceptable behavior.

    Repair the Adobe Reader installation.

  • Finder icon in dock for ALL currently open Finder windows?

    Hi all,
I'm an ex-Windows user and I'm kinda used to having an item in the taskbar for all Explorer windows I have open.
Is there a way to enable this in OS X? I'm pretty good with keyboard shortcuts and alt-tabbing back to Finder is easy but if I have 4 of 5 Finder windows open it's hard to find the one I want quickly.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks!

Question though - what do you mean by secondary function of the F3 key? I currently use it all the time for Exposé of course but that's all I use it for ... how can I make it do the thumbnail thing?
The thumbnail thing on F3 is an Exposé function. To clarify, hitting the F3/Exposé key (you can configure if you want F3 or Exposé to be the primary function of that key in System Preferences > Keyboard) brings up miniature images of every active window. Sorry if that was confusing.
Perhaps OS X Help says it best:
"Your computer has a feature called Exposé that makes it easy to find windows when your desktop is cluttered. Even if you have many overlapping windows, Exposé lets you view thumbnail versions of all of them so you can find the one you need.
To see all your open windows, press the Exposé key. If your keyboard doesn’t have an Exposé key, press Fn-F9. If your keyboard doesn’t have an Fn key, press F9.
Exposé includes several other shortcuts for working with windows. For maximum clutter control, you can use it in combination with the Spaces feature.
To set up Exposé, use Exposé & Spaces preferences."

  • After quitting a "private browsing" session, and I quit togo back to previously open tabs/pinned sites, 40% of the time, the Browser does not restore all previously open tabs/pinned apps/sites

Using HP Pavilion Dv7 with Windows Home Premium, 64bit, and only now and then will FF4.0.1 restore previous (normal) session after returning from a private browsing session, )I use the Quit Private Browsing menu item from the Toolbar right-click menu to go back).... In addition, previously Pinned sites (apps) are lost also, and all must be re-added.
Inconsistent failure and I've not been able to reliably reproduce-- sometimes (about 4-6 times in 10) it just loses all previous information.

I would add that bookmarks may be organised into folders and subfolders. You may wish to make more use of bookmarks if only to ensure you do not loose everything if your session restore becomes problematic.
Bookmarks are a bit more robust than the session restore system. Firefox backs them up automatically and you may do so manually. Possibly Firefox will behave better and faster with hundreds of bookmarks but only tens of tabs open. There is also the tabs groups, but that is something I think development has ceased on and may have similar issues to session restore / or open tabs.

  • Lion Mail doesn't open a window

I keep finding unwelcome changes in Lion, especially Mail. Now I notice that Mail doesn't open a window if I bring Mail to the front and no window is already open, and if a window is minimized it won't open it either as it used to do in Leopard. I have to go to the added trouble of going to File > New Viewer Window to get the regular window or click on the window in the dock. I don't understand why this was changed, it just makes more trouble.
I know people complain about changes, but I just need to know if there's a way, maybe with the help of Terminal, to bring it back to where it was?

    No problems,
Its caught me out before too.

  • Close a file opened in windows XP

     Hi guys,
I'm writing data in a text file and I saw if the file is already open in Windows XP the data are not written and I have no error message.
So my question is how can I close the file in Windows with Labview ?
And is there a way to check before closing it if the file is open by Windows ?
I tried with "close file" and with "close file+.vi" but it's not working.
    Thanks

Thank you smercurio_fc for you reply, but I didn't succeed to close my file.
If I understand it right  I should look on Microsoft side and not in a function in Labview ?
Like to use the command with the cmd.exe to close it ?
Yes, it is a command-line program made by Microsoft. The code that cheggers attached is basically how you would use it. As I noted, the utility is designed to track files opened by network users. To track files opened locally you need to run the command with the "/local ON" parameters. You only need to do this once, though a reboot is required. More information can be found on the Microsoft site.

  • How do I avoid closing out all my tabs by accident? a box used to come up asking "are you sure you want to close all tabs". Now I click on the X and it automatically closes all my open tabs.

Sometimes I, by accident, click on the X and close out ALL of my tabs that were open. A box used to come up asking "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CLOSE ALL TABS?" Now, it just closes them all and I lose all my tabs that I had open. Is there a way to fix that?

You can set the warn prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page to <b>true</b> via the right-click context menu or toggle the value with a double left-click.
