Lion crashing whole system. Mouse scroll lame.

LION has crashed my system 3 times in two days since loading. It's slow to boot up too.
And, what's up with the mouse options. You have to drag your finger down to go up and up to go down. This has been the most frustrating! System prefs don't give you options. UGH! Any help?

LION has crashed my system 3 times in two days since loading.
That's not normal, but difficult to diagnose remotely.  Perhaps you have incompatible third-party software (try rebooting in Safe Mode).  Perhaps you have a damaged hard drive (hold down command-R at startup and repair the drive with Disk Utility).  Perhaps there's something corrupt in your user folder (try testing with a new user).  Perhaps you don't have enough free hard drive space, perhaps you don't have enough RAM, etc.
And, what's up with the mouse options. You have to drag your finger down to go up and up to go down.
That's natural scrolling, and can be turned off as tonefox has said (though in System Preferences -> Trackpad on a MacBook).  You'd be very surprised at how quickly it starts feeling right...  you just have to get your brain re-trained.  Imagine that you were putting your finger on the screen instead of the trackpad and moving the document around as if it were a piece of paper.  Then it makes a lot more sense that moving your fingers up moves the piece of paper up.
In any case, though, if you don't want to give it a try or don't agree that it feels natural after trying it for a while, you're free to turn it off.
System prefs don't give you options.
Since System Preferences is nothing but a collection of options, I'm not sure I understand your complaint here.  Are you unable to open System Preferences, or is there some specific option you are not finding?

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues Adobe Flash Player Help page].
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on '''Settings''' in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
    # Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/>[[Image:fpSettings1.PNG]] <br/>
    # Remove the check mark from '''Enable hardware acceleration'''.
    # Click '''Close''' to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    # Restart Firefox.
This [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player Help - Display Settings page] has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
Does this solve the problem? Let us know.
If this does not fix the issue, you may need to reinstall Adobe Flash Player on your computer.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 64-bit crashes whole system when using Wacom Cintiq 13HD

    Hello,
I've got a big problem and Wacom Support/Forum wasn't really that helpful at all, so I hope someone here has the answer.
    I'm using:
    - Windows 7 Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 1
    - Intel i7-267OQM 2,2 Ghz CPU
    - Nvidia GeForce GT 635M 2GB
    - 8GB RAM
    - Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 64-bit
    - on an ASUS N55S Laptop
My new Wacom Cintiq 13HD runs just fine while just browsing on the internet, with Adobe Illustrator (so far...) and Easy Paint Tool SAI.
But everytime I open my Photoshop it's just some minutes before my system freezes for a second, than blue screen appears und my whole
System crashes down. Every. damn. Time.
I read in the Wacom Forum that more people have this problem, but all suggested solutions by Wacom just don't work.
    Here's the link: http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14060
The one thing I didn't try is using the USB Extensions, so I will buy some tomorow and try that too.
But maybe someone has an other idea that could help?
I tried all drivers Wacom has avaible but it still happens. I updated my Adobe Softwares, my BIOS, my graphic card, I restarted countless times,
    but nothing seems to work.
    Help me, please!

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any new installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

  • Firefox will not open on my mac; crashes whole system when I try to open!

Firefox crashes my whole system when opening for my Mac 10.5.8

Unfortunately, Firefox 4 requires either MacOS X 10.5 or 10.6. For 10.4, you can run Firefox 3.6 from here:

  • Starting HAL crashes whole system

    Hi,
I have encountered a serious issue with HAL.
If I try to start HAL, either by issuing the command "/etc/rc.d/hal start" or appending "hal" to the "DAEMONS" array in /etc/rc.conf, my machine eventually stops responding (after about 1 min).
But worse, when I leave it running and try to run some commands in another console, I get errors from the file system saying that it cannot access any files (I can try to reproduce it if you want me to be more precise).
So this seems like a kernel mode bug (is hal running in kernel mode?).
To get some debugging info, I used some parameters found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHal
    I edited /etc/rc.d/hal and replaced
    /usr/sbin/hald
    with
    /usr/sbin/hald --verbose=yes --daemon=no 2>&1 | ssh user@remotehost tee hal.log
The reason for using a remote file is that my log file is gone after crash and reboot if it is stored locally.
The resulting log file can be found at http://www.tinysave.net/files/download.php?file=496341
I thought this might get fixed if I just waited, but it has been around a few months with my fully upgraded Archlinux 64 bit, so I decided to ask for your help.
My system works otherwise flawlessly if I don't start hal.
Please let me know if you need more information like command outputs or log files.
Thank you for any help on this issue!

  • Mountain lion crash the system

Yesterday I download the new OS X Mountain Lion.
    It crashed my computer bad
    Apple mac book pro.
I had already the Lion running on it without issues.
I went to the shop and they told me that I have to replace the Disk without eventouch the computer.
Now I have to contact a third party and pay a lot of money to recover my data.
    This is absurd!
I have been trying to save the data!
    Help please

that will teach you to keep a backup of your data.

  • Why is my wireless mouse scrolling backward

I upgraded to Lion. Now my mouse scrolls backward. Anyone know why?

That does not appear to be the usual Mouse prefs window in Lion. Don't have a clue why that would be.
This is what it looks like on mine -
However, the equivalent to the 'inverted/natural' choice would probably be the first item, "Move content...." - try unchecking that one.

  • Time machine on Lion crashes the whole system when used with external HD

    Hi all,
Anybody got the same problem? I did a Time Machine backup just before I did the upgrade to Lion (using an external USB HDD) after the upgrade (that went well in my opinion) when I ask TM to do another backup it stays on "Preparing" indefenately and ultimately crashes the whole system ( reset with ctrl+cmd+power button) is required otherwhise the system stays non reactive.
    Regards,
    Iwan

Start by verifying your internal HD, and repair your backups, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a possible way to cancel the backup.  If that works, use the widget in #A1 there to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

  • Magic Mouse scrolling died after last Lion update

Since the last OS lion update, my Magic Mouse stopped scrolling. It just works as a normal mouse, and a bad one.
Moreover, everytime I lift it, or sometimes even randomly, the cursor jumps from place to place on the screen. That's very annoying.
Anyone with the same problem ?

I had the same problem, followed captfred's instuctions.
My macbook air crashed and a grey box popped up asking me to restart.
I did and the scrolling went back to normal. Plus the jumping around of the cursor stopped too.

  • Mouse scrolling in lion problems

I'm using a traditional mouse with a scroll wheel.  The mouse scrolling behavior is really odd in Lion and it seems to have something to do with bounce scrolling.
Scrolling in apps like Safari works fine and is very responsive where bounce scrolling is disabled.  For apps like Xcode where bounce scrolling is enabled it feels like the the app is "catching up" to scroll movements and it has this acceleration effect.  It only seems to happen for me in apps where you are scrolling through text and it just feels sluggish to me.
Everything felt find in Snow Leopard so I'm not sure what changed behind the scenes in Lion.  I'd just like it to work the way it did in Snow Leopoard!  Thanks for any help you can offer.

It's been moved to System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse & Trackpad tab > Trackpad options... button.
    Check Scroll with inertia.

  • Lion mouse scroll speed scrolling too fast

System Pref > Mouse > Scrolling Speed is set to the slowest level and it is still way too fast!  Heard others complaining about this on a Parallels discussion group and thought I would post here.  Incease the range of scrolling sensitivity in an update please!  Reply to this post if you are having the same issue.
Scrolling was always way to fast in leopard when using Iphoto, but this with Lion it is too fast everywhere else except for huge files.

I suppose you are using a non-Apple mouse. You will need to update the software, and adjust the tracking multiplier within the software.
Logitech just came out with an update for Lion.

  • I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGID MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN

I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGIC MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN.

If you go into System Preferences> Mouse. There is a box at the top of the screen that states Scroll direction: natural.
Be sure to uncheck the box after installing MOUNTAIN LION, then the mouse ball will scroll in uthe normal fashion.
       Thanks for all the help...

  • Can't set up new Magic Mouse scrolling with Lion

I am running Lion on my MacBook Pro and just got a brand new Magic Mouse. I can pair it with the computer and move the pointer, right and left click, but no scrolling or middle button clicking. When I go into System Preferences and select Mouse, I only have the options to "Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling," Tracking Speed, Double-Click Speed, Scrolling Speed, Primary mouse button and Zoom using scroll wheel while holding ^Control.
Nowhere do I see the little video and gestures window like I see for my trackpad preferences. I thought maybe I had to install the Wireless Mouse Software, but all I can find is a version for Snow Leopard and my computer will not open the file because it says it's incompatible.
Is scrolling (just up, down, left or right like in a browser) not possible in Lion with a Magic Mouse? What am I missing?

Your missing the Magic Mouse Preference pane.  Sometimes 3rd party drivers interfere with this.  USB overdrive has been reported the most.  Your Magic Mouse Preferences should look like this:
If you can find the culprit and uninstall it, this pane should return.

  • Possible temporary fix for mouse scroll wheel problem in Lion

This is a potential temporary fix for those users of Lion who are unable to fix the reversed mouse scroll wheel issue. I myself have a Microsoft Arc Mouse (not the touch version but the original version) and when I went into the mouse system preferences there was no checkmark box option to return the scroll wheel to its original configuration. When I called Apple about it I was told it's an issue with Lion not recognizing the mouse as being able to reverse the scroll wheel and that Microsoft will need to update the firmware to allow for this change. On a whim, I tried out my wife's Logitech mouse (can't remember the model but it's a fairly recent one) and checked the system preferences. This time there was the checkmark box to allow the scroll wheel to be returned to its original configuration and I could use the scroll wheel as normal. When I plugged my Arc Mouse back in, the scroll wheel had reverted to its original configuration of rotate the wheel down for down scroll and up for up scroll.
So, for those of you who are unable to correct your scroll wheel through preferences, you might want to try plugging in another mouse, making the correction in system preferences, and then plug your original mouse back in.

I mean it. Apple makes major changes in the way things have worked for years, then makes that change the default, causing 1m people to struggle. Bad Bad App le.
There other changes like this in Lion as well, which are arbitrary and are "App le" policy now, which even App le themselves do not follow! (e.g. Cmd-Delete for "Don't Save" in a few App le applications, where 900 million people have used Cmd-<first letter of button> already, for years)
And yes, I did have to go next door and borrow a mouse. "Why?" they said... "I have a Mac" I said. "<laughter> get a real computer" they said. App le does itself no favors by pulling this stuff.
Many of us cannot buy new equipment when arbitrary changes are made, and "get a new driver" is a slap in the face, especially when such changes as Reversing scroll for many-millions could easily be done by making the "new way" an Option, not a default.
Don't get me wrong, Mac and iPhone etc are way ahead of MS and all, but the rabid arrogance inside App le is App aulling.
