Lion disables system info and software update in about this mac

hey guys I have problem with lion when I reboot lion,
it disables system info and software update in "about this mac"
actually it says "this button is disabled because there is no system profiler application" or  "this button is disabled because there is no software update application"
and also everytime when I reboot my computer it always changes default applicatons. for example
it changes from VLC player to quicktime,  from Archive utility to textEdit and so on.
each time i got to reinstall "Afloat application" if i want to use it.
for making them ok I just need to open software updater from system pref. and the button becomes visible again.
it is same with the system info. I gotto search system profiler via spotlight search and I run, button becomes visible again.
for the archieve utility i got to go to coreservices and open Archieve utility then automatically it becomes default app for .zip files again.

Did you just install Lion? If so, you might need to try to reinstall as something got messed up.
Alfoat uses SIMBL which will break at just about every update. The reason you may have to keep installing Afloat is because the Resume feature of Lion is not compatible with SIMBL. See here: http://roaringapps.com/app:383
SIMBL is a low-level system hack and may be causing your problems.

  • Why is "more info" greyed out in the About This Mac window?

The More Info... is greyed out in the About This Mac window... how can I ungrey it to get info?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • 10.10.3 supplemental update confused About this Mac

After the supplemental update my mac book pro has incorrect information in About This Mac. The storage tab shows that I have 223.86GB free of 249.77GB. That is correct. The graphic shows the entire disk consumed by Backup(140.74TB yes TB). This is obviously incorrect. IStat menu also has incorrect disk usage information as well and is reporting 140.96TB free.

    I have 10.7.3
I am wanting to find out if I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3 Supplemental Update installed ?
Because I am unable to see it in the Installed Software section of Software Update.
I am also unable to install the Mac OS X 10.7.3Supp.dmg file.
I click on the file and it opens a dialog box saying it is Verifying.
It then opens up a window in the background.
    The window contains this icon:
When I Double Click the the icon, it comes up with the dialog window to install the update.
When I get to the step where I select where I want the file to be installed, this domes up:
    What does this mean ?
Do I already have the Update installed ?
How do I install the Update ?

  • What is the backup tab and other tab in about this mac?

It's because they have over 60% of the memory of my computer and i dont know why because i dont have any backups in my computer

    William Boyd, Jr. wrote:
Thanks for straightening out my misconceptions.  When you write, "They're consolidated periodically into daily or weekly versions", how does that relate to the fact that snapshots aren't being copied any more?
It doesn't.  "Real" Time Machine backups are entirely different and separate from Local snapshots, although they're usually made at the same time, and displayed on the same "Star Wars" display.  The periodic thinning is similar, up to a point: both are kept for at least 24 hours, then reduced to one per day.
But the daily Locals will be deleted after about a week (and all are subject to deletion for space reasons).
Because of a quirk in my current configuration, I have automatic Time Machine backups disabled on my Lion system, so I'm not able to see how it works in "normal" operation.
You can turn Local snapshots on separately, via the Terminal command in #30 (I usually have them running on my iMac).  They may get turned back off unexpectedly, though, in some reboot situations.  I haven't figured it out exactly, but it seems to be if you boot to the Recovery HD, then back to Lion.  Sometimes.

    Dear Adobe.
Yesterday I installed the latest version of Flash Player that auto appeared on my screen. Ever since I can not play video, and my system has become painfully slow. I have Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and software is up to date. Before this everything was running beautifully. Can you please provide a link so I can uninstall the latest version only. Thank you. Stephen Kress. Melbourne. Australia

When you run the uninstaller, it will uninstall all Flash Player versions.
If you want to revert to an older version after that, get it from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html

  • I am a very brand new Mac user. So anyway, when I point to the apple and click on "About This Mac", it says the operating system is, "OS X Version 10.8.2. The question, is this "Mountain Lion", or is that additional software I need to download?

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.

  • IChat won't connect and Software Update will not run.

    Hi, all,
Sorry if something like this has already come up, and I apologise if this is the incorrect forum to post this in. I searched and didn't see anything identical to my issue (I didn't search very hard, but I did search), so I figured posting a topic might be the best way to go. I know this is two problems, but I decided to post it in the iChat forum in case the two were related.
I bought this computer and received it yesterday. It's a 15 inch MacBook Pro, i5, 10.6.4. It worked fine this morning, software update ran, ichat worked fine.
Now, when I try to connect to iChat, it takes a good ten minutes to try to connect, and then it sends me an error that says "You have been disconnected from iChat services. An internal error occurred that disconnected you from all iChat services. To resume using iChat, log in again to your instant messaging account." So, I quit iChat, and restarted it, but now it won't even show me my buddy list saying "connecting....". It just starts and sits there, and all the options are greyed out. I tried going into the security settings and changing the port to 443, but that's greyed out, too.
So I thought I would try to run software update, and software update opens, but it doesn't ... go. It shows the little blue bar, and it's not frozen, but it doesn't advance at all, and it never gives me the option to go to the "install updates" screen because it doesn't check. I went into my network settings to check my connection, and I'm definitely connected to the internet (I mean, I'm typing this ON the MacBook Pro right now), but the panel says I'm not. I can hit "cancel" and quit software update.
I already reinstalled the OS and the update to 10.6.4, and it's still the same issue.
Help, anyone? This computer is brand new and I really don't want to have to erase and reinstall.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
On the changing the port front stop off on the Account Info tab on the way a deselect "Use this Account" to take it Off Line. (you can get half way states)
You should then find the port 5190 is dark text so it can be edited.
You should press the Enter key to "Set" the port change (this is different to earlier versions of iChat)
Also try it with the SSL option disabled.
If this is an AIM Login (AIM or Apple Name) their SSL server is more prone to "Falling over". iChat should default to using an Non SSL Login on a reconnection front it can be subject to a time frame issue.
Next check the Mac Firewall (System Preferences > Security > Firewall tab)
If this is On in Snow Leopard you have to go to the Advanced Button and Allow Signed Apps and Add iChat to the list.
I favour the last suggestion as this may also block Software Update (Although I nm not sure how you got to 10.6.4 although it is a separate Download you can get).
I would also check you have DNS servers listed in System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Wierd system behavior after software update

For some reason I got this great idea to reinstall my system from scratch, last week.
I did two identical, redundant backups...both with Carbon Copy Cloner, onto 2 different external drive partitions.
Then, I reformatted my aluminum powerbook g4 HD and did an OS 10.5.6 clean install.
Before the install, i used Disk Utility to ensure the SMART status was OK.
    It was.
Immediately after that, I did a software update, updating it to 10.5.8.
Next, I use Migration Assistant, to restore all my docs and apps from a clone of my original HD that I had made with Carbon Copy Cloner, on an external drive.
Reboot was OK and all my files and apps were back.
Then, being a diligent Mac user, I ran software update again, and saw that there was an apple security update and some other updates that needed to be installed.
    I went ahead with that.
Now the mac won't boot...the spinning gear runs for 2-3 minutes, then all i get is the grey Ghostbusters circle with a slash through it.
But If I put my original system 10.5.6 installer CD in the slot, and reboot, System 10.5.8 restarts from my HD, after which I can then remove the CD from the Mac and everything works fine.
Except that, for every restart, I have to use the Installer CD.
And now I'm afraid to ever update the OS again.
I went back and did the whole thing over again in the same order...with the same results.
The system apparently finds something on the CD, that it needs, so it can start from the system 10.5.8 that's installed on my HD.
    That's wierd.
In one sense this suggests to me that I was probably right in thinking that a clean system install was a good idea; it seems like there might be something awry in the old system, since as soon as I do the Migration Assistant, any further software update, hoses the OS.
About This Mac reports that I'm using:
    System Version:          Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a)
    Kernel Version:          Darwin 9.8.0
Just wondering if this might ring a bell with some Genius out there, who might have a simple fix, versus re-clean installing, then software updating to 10.5.8, then reinstall all my apps, then do the security update, and hold my breath.....over and over again, until I hopefully hit the right  combination.
Or, I guess I could just restore one of the redundant backups, and forget about a clean system install...but now I'm getting stubborn.
I WANT that clean install! :-)

First, I would install the 10.5.8 combo update, which contains all fixes for Leopard. It's available from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866 . Often Software update does something odd, and applying the combo update fixes it. Repair permissions first, apply the combo update, then repair permissions again. You might try this with the system in the state it is today to see if it brings everything back into sync.

  • Some issue with appstore and software update

    Hi all,
I have some issues with app store and software update.
Sometime App Store report that it was available software update for Mac OS X ML. When I enter in App Store to upgrade something goes wrong and I cannot do anything.
If I close and open again App Store, it start to look for update and aftware 5-10 seconds App Store reports that there aren't update available.
I take a look in /var/log/install.log and I found this:

  • WSUS and Software Update Points

Hi,  We are looking at expanding our use of Config Manager 2012 SP1 to handle all of our WSUS patching needs.   Today we use a local standalone WSUS install that is on the config manager server and have the software update point setup on this
same config manager server.   We are using this setup to update a small collection of System Center machines.
We also have a full blown wsus server on a different machine and this wsus server has been doing all of our patching for all the corporate servers/workstations,etc.
we would like to start using this full blown wsus machine as our software update (wsus) synchronization source since it has much more space and is dedicated to Patching alone.
Is it better for me to install a software update point on this full blown WSUS server, Or is it better for us to use this older WSUS server as an upstream synchronization source?    I have read that "The software update point site system
role must be created on a server that has WSUS installed"
If we are better off installing the software update point on the older WSUS server, does this have to be the first software update point installed?  Do I have to remove the software update point we setup initially on our config manager server and start
over?    I ask because the technet documentation says "The first software update point that you install is configured as the synchronization source, which synchronizes the updates from Microsoft Update or from the upstream synchronization
    source."
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks Lance

First, how many clients are you managing?
Next, space is irrelevant. The WSUS instance once integrated into ConfigMgr does not handle updates, it only handles the update catalog. So no space is really needed except in the DB to store the catalog (EULAs are also downloaded and stored; however, these
    are quite small text files).
The software update point is simply a thin layer of management on top of the WSUS instance thus yes, it must be installed on the same system as the WSUS instance.
Also remember that once integrated, no management should be done in the WSUS console at all because as managed, WSUS simply downloads and provides access to the update catalog and no the updates. The updates are deployed using ConfigMgr itself.

  • Safari, iTunes and Software update can't connect, firefox can

    Hi all!
Since upgrading to Leopard I've been unable to get my macbook to connect using Safari, Software Update or iTunes. I get unknown error messages from iTunes and Software Update and a message that the server can't be found or times out from safari.
Strangely Firefox works perfectly and the other Macs on my network (some 10.4, some 10.5) are fine.
I have tried checking the proxy settings and creating an new user account but both times the problem persists.
The only thing I can think it could be is that someone configured proxy settings through firefox a while ago (pre 10.5) when they used it at their office. could that affect safari etc?
    All help gratefully received.
    Adam

Hi. Sorry this will not help, more of an observation. I posted a while back that I was having much the same problem at work when connecting through a proxy. Any Apple app that needs an internet connection did not work, ie Safari, Widgets, Software Update etc. But iChat works, as does Mail although not the RSS function. Firefox on the other hand works fine. I am absolutely certain my setting are correct and when I revert to using my 10.4.10 boot disk that all works fine. I think Apple has some how changed the way user info and password is sent when making a net connection through a proxy and now with 10.5 it does not work.
I also spoke with a mate yesterday he has just upgraded to 10.4.11 which means he now has Safari 3. He now is also experiencing the same problems I have with 10.5 and proxy connections.

  • Safari and Software Update wont open anymore when connected to internet.

My Safari and Software update and Internet Explorer cannot connect to the internet anymore after 4 years even when I'm connected to the internet... I once got a 'Posix 54' error message. Firefox does not have a problem!
I'm using Mac OSX 10.3.2. Which I reinstalled just now, Xmas 07 and reinstalled all the software with no luck. I've wasted three days trying to solve this problem. Can any one help please. London UK.

    Hi,
Check under here to see if you have any proxies selected. If you do, unselect them and retry the applications.
