Lion DNS Server not answering reverse IP queries

I just upgraded my server to 10.7 lion. Everything works great, except that the DNS sever will not answer queries about reverse IPs. Interestingly OD isn't affected yet though as I add more replicas I'm afraid that problems might start cropping up.
Queries for forward zones work fine. Reverse zones don't
I tried restoring from backup without luck.
I found a directory called "/etc/dns.migrated-2011-08-06-002722" with the standard "loggingOptions.conf.apple", "options.conf.apple" and publicView.conf.apple.
I checked another server that was also upgraded to Lion, the DNS service is running (it only has the original DNS name of the server when it was set up) and it shows the same symptoms; forward zone works, reverse doesn't.
Has anyone seen this? Any tips for "fixing" my 200+ IP addr zones?

I've got this problem, too.  I've tried a few things that have not worked.
1. importing a plist from another working (SL) DNS server.  The zones all get imported, including reverse; however, the reverse zones are missing their nameservers.  After I fill in all ~50 rev zone NS entries (it validates to make sure they are all filled in), it looses all of its data.  All that time I spent is wasted.
I've tried this on my backup server with a fresh lion/admintools install and again after software update
2.  I've deleted /etc/named.conf and /etc/dns/db.* and placed a fresh named.conf in /etc
added one reverse zone, setting its NS.  same thing.
i was much happier with snow leopard, which is what i ordered from cdw, but they delivered these

  • Just resolved Back to my Mac issue called Apple Suppport in the UK and they were really helpful if the error DNS server not responding the problem is with Apple server not your server ( I had tried to reboot by router, restart my laptop etc.

I was having problem with my Back to my Mac as message was saying DNS Server not responding . I tried to turn my WIFI off, then my router  to no avail. Decided to call Apple Support line in the UK . I got a call back immediatly and great support.  The advisor took over my screen and we check that my laptop was synchronising   with I phots and it was.  The adviser also told that when the message DNS server is not responding next to Back to my Mac is has to do with Apple Server not mine , router etc... Hope this save others some time! Rather than spending time truining on and off changing IP address etc...

Thanks for your thorough post. I too need to use BTMM on almost a daily basis for my job, and it has fallen short countlness times. I too have taken great pains to check all of the typical trouble shooting steps within iCloud and in the Apple keychain on each Mac etc, but after the latest rounds of system updates from Apple a few weeks ago to Mountain Lion, BTMM on one of my Macs is completely broken and unusable. I would concur that if you need remote access for "real" mission critical use, just bite the bullet and pay for a service like LogMeIn. You won't regret it and you will get real software support.

  • I am getting "dns server not responding"

I am staying in a hotel and my 3gs iphones keep getting "dns server not responding"  my computers work fine in my room.  My iphones don't but if I walk out in the hallway the iphones work fine. Help?

Found what was the problem on my configuration.
Since NLB VIP did not respond when traffic was going from other networks (Internet  included) i had to reconfigure NLB from unicast to multicast. Then thing started to work but i had DNS resolution error.
    Solution:
A BUG! When you change NLB cluster type, ipv6 that is configured on it gets removed so you have to enter it again. That's the same IPV6 IP under Infrastructure servers - DNS that ends with :3333::1 for your .domain.local

  • Windows server 2012 standard second DNS server not automaticly detected by Windows 7.

    Hi!
We have configured a second DNS server on our domain just in case.
I have tested the second DNS by activating manually the second dns server in the IPV4 config in windows 7 pro.
My question is: the second DNS server is not supposed to be detected automaticly by windows?
    Thanks you.

    Hi,
There may be some misunderstanding about how DNS works.
DNS client doesn't detect DNS servers. DNS client doesn't know which zone is hosted by the DNS server. DNS client can only send DNS query to the DNS servers which are configured in the client.
As I mentioned above, the DNS Client service queries the DNS servers in the following order:
The DNS Client service sends the name query to the first DNS server on the preferred adapter’s list of DNS servers and waits one second for a response.
If the DNS Client service does not receive a response from the first DNS server within one second, it sends the name query to the first DNS servers on all adapters that are still under consideration and waits two seconds for a response.
If the DNS Client service does not receive a response from any DNS server within two seconds, the DNS Client service sends the query to all DNS servers on all adapters that are still under consideration and waits another two seconds for a response.
If the DNS Client service still does not receive a response from any DNS server, it sends the name query to all DNS servers on all adapters that are still under consideration and waits four seconds for a response.
If it the DNS Client service does not receive a response from any DNS server, the DNS client sends the query to all DNS servers on all adapters that are still under consideration and waits eight seconds for a response.
In your case, if you configure the DNS2 as the secondary DNS server on Windows 7, when the DNS1 is down, Windows 7 will send DNS query to DNS2 after 3 sceconds(Step 3).
    Best Regards.

  • Osx lion dns server, forward certain domain searches to other dns server

    Hi!
i'm configuring the DNS service in OSX 10.7.1. I want to forward all queries to certain domain (f.e. *.special_domain.com) to certain dns server (f.e. 192.168.0.1 & 2)
i remember in previous OSX Server versions that you can do that in an easy way:
there were a /etc/resolver directory where you can place a text file in order to forward certain domain queries to certain dns server, like this:
    filename: /etc/resolver/special_domain.com
    content of this file:
    nameserver 192.168.0.1
    nameserver 192.168.0.2
now in lion there is no such directory... someone knows how to do that??
    thanks for reading and regards!
    D

i've just read about the "scutil" tool
From the reply of the command "scutil --dns" i understand that is possible and also supported (i guess)
Now i have to discover what files that tool reads, and which is the proper way to modify that
I'll keep investigating tomorrot, now i'm saved by the bell!!

  • External DNS server not replicating records to secondary after migration from 2003 to 2012

    Hi
I have a query relating to 2012 Server and DNS.
Last week we de-commissioned our primary external DNS server (Windows 2003 Server) and moved the role over to a new Windows 2012 server.
Since this point replication to our secondary server (3rd party hosted) does not seem to occur and our DNS records seem to have expired on the secondary server as we cannot look these up via nslookup.
I cannot see any failures in the event log of the server; I have checked our external firewall logs and nothing is being blocked inbound/ outbound as far as I can see. And the server’s local firewall has been disabled.
The server is a standalone server in a workgroup with a standard filebased primary zone, with no AD integration and recursion disabled.
When I created the zone I copied the .dns file from the old server and selected this in the interface during the creation of the zone on the new server.  The new server has the same internal and external IP as the old server and the old server is off-line.
I have also manually increased the serial number of the zone and still no joy.
One thing that I have noticed is when I open the zones properties/Name Servers and click edit on the external nameserver I get the infamous "The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone" error.
Any help Would be appreciated, thanks in advance

Nice to hear that you are close in finding the problem. So in short:
You have enabled Zone transfers in DNS management console for the applicable zone
You have verified that your DNS is listening to the correct interfaces
You have enabled firewall rules to accept TCP and UDP traffic to port 53
You have checked if "BIND secondaries" option is applicable to your case
You have initiated a zone transfer from the secondary server

  • Direct Access: DNS error on Operations Status (DNS server not responding)

    Hi!
I am testing Direct Access on Windows 2012 R2 Standard. So far I have deployed the Remote Access role to our server "ABC-DA1". I have completed the configuration wizard for a Single NIC deployment and defined a FQDN as the "public name"
    (da.domain.com).
After completing the wizard I go to the the Operations Status page and find the an error telling me one of the DNS servers is unavailable. The mentioned server is no longer operational as it was running on an old Win2k8R2 DC server that was demoted.
Is there a way to remove the reference to the old server? I have 3 new DNS servers running on the new Domain Controllers but it seems like the old DC did not completely remove itself.
Below is a screenshot of the operations status.
Thank you for your help :)

    Hi,
Please go to the Name Resolution Policy and check if you can change the DNS server there.
Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Name Resolution Policy
    Hope this helps.

  • DNS Server not working. Start Time "Not Available"

I lost power to my server last night in a power outage.
Today the DNS Server doesn't seem to be working. I verified that my server's IP is the primary name server on the clients, however all lookups are going to the secondary (public) name server and therefore giving the public IP address for LAN services.
To test it, I typed in Terminal (both on a client machine and on the server itself) "nslookup [myinternaldomain.com] [mydnsserverip]" and get ";; connection timed out; no servers could be reached"
When I load up Server Admin, I see that the DNS service is running but for Start Time it says "Not Available".
Tried stopping and starting the service.

Thanks for that link. It looks about at my level so I'll have a read tonight. I am on 10.6.8

  • DNS Server - How does it resolve queries that aren't in it's zones?

    Footy wrote:
Also if you have multiple DNS servers pointing at each other and no root hint or forwarders you get stuck in a loop of the two machines querying each other over and overNo. It doesn't. If the DNS server has no forwarders or root hints then it doesn't know how to get any further answers to the query so it returns a negative response. Read RFC 2308.

So I'm trying to learn more about the basics of DNS, specifically DNS servers as that's what I'm having trouble with in my environment and trying to learn more about to fix.I know what DNS is and I think I have a pretty good handle on how it does what it does, but where I'm having trouble keeping up is figuring out how it resolves things outside of my local domain. For example, everything I've seen in searches says that if you've got two DCs on your domain you should have it set up like this:On DC1:DNS1: DC2DNS2: DC1On DC2:DNS1: DC1DNS2: DC2And you should have the workstations in your environment set with DC1 and DC2 as their primary and secondary DNS servers. Is that correct? If it is correct, then what happens when someone in the network goes to say www.google.comconsidering I don't have that name or IP address in my server's lookup...

  • DNS server not responding

    Hi!
I've been having problems lately about my network. I cannot find any connections on my computer, and I have to use an ethernet cable to connect and use the WiFi. The trouble shooter told me to plug the ethernet cable in and try if it works, but later on
it tells me that my computer is configurated correctly and the device or dns server isnt responding.
Now i have searched up some things, and to fix the dns server response you have to type ncap.cpl and click on the wifi connection. After that you go to properties and enter in the dns address code.(208.67.222.222)
Can anyone help me?The Problem is,
