If your NAS/TimeMachine manufacturer doesn't provide an update, you could probably revert to the old ways:

This has solved AFP issues for some but I haven't been able to verify it for TM.

How do I use Time Machine with a NAS drive?
I was hoping to use a USB drive with my new Netgear router to do Time Machine backups, but I have since learned that the router only supports Windows or FAT formatted drives.
Will a NAS drive work with Time Machine? If so, can someone give me a crash course on how to set one up and use it?

For the record, I have a Netgear N300 DSL Modem/Router combo, and I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro.

That being said, TM works fine on my WD 2TB MyBookLive NAS. The specs on the one I bought specifically said it would work with TM. Neither one of the links you posted mentioned TM so I would be leary.

I use Time Machine with an external hard disc which has worked perfectly for some years. Recently Time Machine has aborted backups if the screen saver starts when back-up is in progress. I use a Maxtor OneTouch4 back-up system. Any ideas?
Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine. I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake a back-up. I have now switched of all screen savers.Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
Time machine on NAS - shared with 2 Macs and some PC's
I just got a new MacBook Pro and have an iMac. I'm running time machine successfully on a USB drive hooked to my MacBook. I want to buy a big 1-2TB NAS drive, hook it to my network, and use time machine with both Macs as well as use the storage for 2 PC's on my network.
a) is this feasible?
b) If not, is it feasible with just the Mac's and no pc's?
c) is any particular brand of NAS most compatible with Time MachineTM will only back up to drives that are formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. NAS devices do not use OS X so TM will not work with them. TM will not backup Windows drives. Most USB based NAS devices may provide a pass-through USB port to which you could connect a separate USB drive exclusively for TM, but I cannot assure you that will work.
I assume you do know the difference between a USB external drive system and a NAS device? They are not the same things. Most NAS devices use Ethernet - preferably Gigabit because anything slower is really unsuitable for network backup (as are USB drives.) -
Hi.
I had a first gen time machine with backups all on Snow Leopard.
This died (power supply), and I bought a new time capsule, because to fix the old one would cost nearly the same amount.
Since, I have started using Lion, and backed up onto my new time capsule in Lion.
Unfortunately, there was a file I deleted that I really need for a Logic Audio project, that is only present on the old time capsule.
I got the old time capsule fixed, so it powers up. I even extended my current wireless network with it. I can see inside it -- all the data that I dragged onto its HD in the past is present, and the "Sparse Bundle" containing the data for the time capsule save-states is present too.
Now, when I try to "Enter" my old time capsule, I get this error message:
I tried entering the time machine via WiFi and via ethernet, to no avail.
Can anyone help me to access these old save states on my old "snow leopard" time capsule?
I was thinking maybe I need to try to access it from a machine with Snow Leopard?
Please help.

I was moving bookmarks in safari and 2 complete folders have emptied their contents. The folders are still there. I don't have a working time machine and icloud has caused the relevant folders to disappear from all my machines, iPhone, iPad and iMac as well as thge MacBook Air I was working on. HELP!!!

Now to your questing:
So, you moved some Bookmarks and now 2 folders are completely empty.
I think that they dropped in a other folder during dragging the Bookmarks.
Did you check ALL of you Bookmark folder if they are there?
If you didn't delete the they have to be still there.

When I use time machine with my external harddrive to back up computer, some music from iTunes library, and some photos from iPhoto library are missing when I check backup disk. I am using latest version of mountain lion. Am I doing something wrong?
First, Time Machine doesn't completely back up the iPhoto library while iPhoto is running. Make sure you quit iPhoto after making any changes to allow a backup to take place.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including both overt and hidden exclusions. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop. -
I cannot get time machine (with airport) to back up my mac. It worked previously but not now. It is working on my macbook. the message i get is "Time Machine couldn't back up to '(airport network name)'" Any help is appreciated.
OS is important.. What OS is on Mac and what is on the working macbook?
Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..
Does the AE show up in Mac airport utility?
Can you mount the disk in finder and copy files to it/from it??
Did you try a TM reset after mounting in Finder.. so you know it is available?
What about a network reboot.. does it work post a restart for a few minutes/hours/days??? -
Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.

You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each. -
Cannot Reinstall OS X Lion OR Restore from Time Machine
With Firevault enabled, I attempted to reinstall OS X Lion from Recovery Mode. After being asked to enter the password to unlock the encrypted 'Mactinosh HD' disk, the reinstallation began. Everything seemed fine until the install process was supposedly finished, then a window popped up explaining that there was an error and to try again. I tried again and the same thing happened. I also tried to restore from Time Machine with no success (the same thing happened). I opened Disk Utility via Recovery mode and verified/repaired the 'Macintosh HD' disk and its permissions, but the reinstall/Time Machine restore still fails. Then I erased the disk with Disc Utlilty, and attempted this again with no success. My computer no longer boots into OS X at all (it didn't even before I erased the disk via Disk Utility). It can only boot into Recovery Mode or Windows--I'm basically running a pretty overpriced Windows PC.
I am using a 21" iMac with an Intel Core i5 processor, CPU @ 250GHz, have 4 GB of RAM, and am (supposed to be) running OS X 10.7 Lion. Right now I'm using Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 bit on a Bootcamp partition on the same computer if that matters to anyone. If there's any useful information I could provide to help you help me then please let me know! This is a pretty sucky issue that I'm having a great a deal of trouble and frustration with and any help would be very very appreciated.Whenever I try to do this it says "Error trying to turn off encryption". The message does not offer much in the way of an explanation aside from that. Maybe that's simply an 'incorrect password' message? I entered my adminstrator password which works to unlock the drive, but apparently not to turn off encryption unless the error has nothing to do with my password. I opted to have Apple hold on to my Filevault restore key which I was too lazy to write down when I first enabled the feature, so if that is the password required to turn off encryption I suppose I'll need to call Apple Care to retrieve it. =/
By the way, the computer no longer boots into reguar Recovery Mode but now boots into internet recovery. Interestingly enough, another attempt at Time Machine recovery also appeared to work (saying that it was done successfully) but in fact it didn't.
Also, whenever I try to change startup disc to Macintosh HD it says "Error: Building boot caches on boot helper partition failed". Whenever I restart holding the Options key to view available drives/partitions, only Windows and My Passport (external hard drive) appear. -

I have a specific question about using Time Machine with a NAS drive. I have a NAS setup, and I just installed a 2nd drive there specifically for backups. I have 2 macs, a MBP & an iMac. I followed instructions somewhere for creating a sparsebundle disk image on the NAS drive for each machine to get time machine to work over the network, and got it to work. Since the drive is 1TB, I made 2 images at 450GB each, even though the 2 machines only currently need about 90GB & 150GB.
Now, based on advice elsewhere, I set up Superduper to back up to the same drive. This uses a similar process of creating a sparse image on that drive. Note that I say sparse image, not sparsebundle - I tried using the existing sparsebundles already created, but superduper didn't seem to want to do that, and in fact although sparsebundle is a choice in their menu, only sparse image would work. So I went ahead and did this but only with my MBP. It indeed created a separate sparse image, and it takes up the full amount of space necessary to back up the entire drive (90GB).
What I'm wondering is if I'm running the risk of quickly running out of room on my NAS drive, since I think TM will fairly quickly eat up as much space as you give it (450GB X 2 = 900 GB), and the superduper backup is taking up the full amount of hard drive space needed (90GB) to make a full backup (based on what I had read, I thought that somehow using superduper onto the same drive as your TM backups would mean superduper would 'piggy back' on TM's backed up files and only add the components needed to create a startup disk, and therefore not take up much space.) I was still hoping to also back up the iMac (120GB) with Superduper onto the same drive, but don't want to do that yet until I have some peace of mind about this question...

you should know that TM backups to 3rd party NASes are not officially supported. you used a hack to make it work. but you use it on your won risk and with no guarantees.

no, that won't happen. TM is very economical in how it stores backups. on every backup it only backs up afresh new and changed files. everything else is *hard linked* to existing backup copies. that's why incremental TM backups are usually quite small and fast.

NO. nothing like this is remotely true. superduper and TM backups are fully independent and don't interact at all. use separate sparse bundles for TM and superduper backups.
I was still hoping to also back up the iMac (120GB) with Superduper onto the same drive, but don't want to do that yet until I have some peace of mind about this question...

Reverting back to Mountain Lion from Mavericks via Time Machine?

I'm wondering if anybody has successfully downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion. I am fed up with all the bugs with Mavericks...I should never have upgraded. However, I did make a system backup via Time Machine before upgrading. I'm not sure if it is possible to go back, though. Has anyone successfully done it via Time Machine? I'm also having trouble getting to the restore menu - I have a PC keyboard (which works fine for the Mac), but it doesn't do anything when I hit Command (well, the PC equivalent) + R or Option when I restart. The only thing that seems to work is Command+Option+R, which takes me to the Internet recovery, though I'm not sure if I can go back to my old system via Time Machine on that. Anyway, would appreciate any thoughts on this.Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. OS X Internet Recovery, which you were able to invoke with your non-Apple keyboard, will work just as well.
Once the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, select Restore from Time Machine Backup.
Select the TM backup of your Mountain Lion system prior to upgrading - their backup dates and OS X versions will appear, so you will be looking for the most recent backup of your system when it was running OS X version 10.8.5.
When it completes, your Mac will restart and your previous system state will have been restored. After that, uninstall any third party software and system modifications incompatible with Mavericks before contemplating an upgrade. -
Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?
Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port? My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB. I'd like to double or triple its memory. I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive. I'd like to use it in addition to. Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back. So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
Thank you for your time!Well, what you mentioning is possible. However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up."). Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule. I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule. Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it. Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first). If it works, you're all set. -
I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme. Some forums say yes, some say no. I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC. Any help would definitely be appreciated.
You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:

In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.
