Lion External Hard Drive (and flash drive) problem

I recently installed Mac OS X Lion on my Macbook Pro. I plugged in my external hard drive and my computer recognized the HD and even let me access files on it. However, when I tried to copy a movie onto it, it gave me an error: "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)." I decided to try a different file, the same thing happenned. I tried a USB flash drive and the same thing happenned. I checked the permissions for them and it says "you can read and write" so everything is fine there. If it helps the HD is formatted as "MS-DOS (FAT32)" and the USB stick is "MS-DOS (FAT16)".
I don't really know what to do because I have never had this problem on the same computer with Snow Leopard in the past (the only time I did was when the file was too big to copy onto it because of the formatting or something but it definetely isn't the case now).
PLEASE HELP!

There might be a bug in the driver of the FAT-32 files systems. That is the likely cause, resolution, go for any free FAT-32 filesystem driver for mac. There is very less security feaures in FAT-32, and I am sure that the security messsagae is a red herring.
What you can possibly do is a unmount, and then a remount, manually.

  • USB external hard drive and thumb drive don't work any more...

I have a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5...and i've been using my USB external hard drive and thumb drives for a year with no problems....but now when i plug them in, my mac does not see them...the lights on the external hard drive and thumb drives come on as normal but nothing else...it does this on all the USB ports(front and back) BUT my iPod, keyboard and mouse, and HP printer (that use the same USB ports) works fine....(also i'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2)....help....

You can't transfer songs from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store (you can also re-download them using the iTunes Store Purchased screen).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, drag the files (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window, to add them to the iTunes library.

  • New hard drive and photoshop license problem

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 Ghz Pentium processor, 2 GB of RAM, and Win Xp/Pro SP3.
The hard drive in this computer failed, and it has been replaced.  I used an image backup from Acronis True Image 10 to "restore" the new disk.
Now, when I try to open Phostoshop CS2, I receive a message that the license is no longer valid (I have been using this version of Photoshop for a long time).
    I don't have this problem with InDesign CS3 (v. 5.0.2), FrameMaker 7.2b144, or Acrobat 8.1.6.
I didn't find any helpful info on the "Product Activation" web page.
I tried a forum search and a search of Adobe.com using the search criteria "new hard drive and photoshop license problem."
The only relevant item I could find is this:
"Backup and restoration of your system using standard tools do not require reactivation. While reactivation after backing up or restoring the system was required in early versions of Adobe software (such as Adobe Photoshop® CS), Adobe has continued to improve the activation process with new technology that eliminates the need to reactivate after system restoration. In complex situations where the system is being upgraded, we recommend deactivating the Adobe software before commencing the system upgrade. Once the system upgrade is completed, the subsequent install/restore will require reactivation, which is typically accomplished without difficulty and is completely transparent to the user."
So does that mean I have to "reactivate" Photoshop CS2?  If so, do I use the Activation window that is displayed when I open Photoshop?  The serial number has 20 characters.  Will the Adobe (re)activation recognize this old serial number?  If not, what do I have to do to get this product usable again?
    Please help.

    >replaced your hard drive and CS2 DRM is looking for the old hard drive number and not finding it
Interesting... I use http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm which creates a bootable CD and runs outside of Windoze
I have made image files and loaded those files to a new hard drive (I use drive swap hardware to make a backup and create a new drive every time I install or uninstall major software) and have never had any program complain about needing activation
But, since the program I use is Linux on a bootable CD, it copies EVERYTHING on a hard drive, even the hidden registration areas as far as I can tell, so when I do a restore to a new drive, everything is put on the new drive

  • With Lion, Mac no longer recognizes flash drive or Kindle.

I am using a 13-in unibody Macbook (late 2009) running OS X Lion 10.7.1, and I am having trouble using flash drives and my Kindle.  USB-connected printers still work, and my USB-connected tablet also works as normal.  Flash drives and my Kindle show up in Disk Utility, but show to already be mounted even though they do not appear anywhere else.  My only option is to eject them.
This is extremely problematic as I work off of my flash drive for school and need access to the files on it at home.  Immediately after upgrading, both my Kindle and flash drives worked just fine.  This seems to be a recent development, and I can't figure out what happened.  I have not installed any new programs or made any system changes since just after upgrading, and the drives still worked fine then.
    What's going on?

    Hey lorrainefrommalibu,
Thanks for the question. I understand that your iOS devices are not being recognized by iTunes on OS X. The following article may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/TS1591
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
If you haven't connected your iOS device to this computer before, unlock the device and tap Trust. Learn more about the Trust This Computer alert.
    Restart your iOS device.
    Restart your Mac.
Make sure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.
Check USB connections. iOS devices need USB 2.0 to work properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, check the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
    Try another USB cable.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Is there a way to use an ipod touch 3rd generation as a hard drive or flash drive?

I have an ipod touch 3rd gen thats all cracked and tourn up, it still will boot up but it wont respond to touch and the headphone jack doesnt work.  it still shows up in itunes and i can restore it and put music on it and everything, but sinse the touch doesnt work, i cant do anything with it. its also missing the top black part of the screen so you can see all the hardware and stuff. Is there any way to use it as just a hard drive or flash drive so that when i plug it in, it mounts to my desktop?

Well you actually can use it to hold all kinds of files.
If you don't like the itunes interface there are a whole lot of apps that will wired or wirelessly swap files back and forth with your iPod.
a few come to mind are/
    phonedisk dropbox
    shovebox
    filemagnet
    USBDISK
    Air sharing
    photoshare
amd these are just the ones I use on a weeklly basis, most were cheap or even free, check them out at the itunes store or from appshopper or something like that.
OR goto ifixit and order a new sceen and put it on yourself for cheap
    HOpe this help.

  • Legacy IDE Hard Drive and DVD Drive

I wondered if anybody could send me in the right direction with this...
I have got the A55M-E33 motherboard and try to connect my old hard-drive and DVD drive (both IDE) to the motherboard using IDE to SATA converters. The BIOS detects both drives, however I don't think I got the right BIOS settings to accommodate the way the drives should be addressed. Has somebody used this kind of setup and would kindly share their experience please?
    Thanks

  • G-Drive and Airport recent problems

About every hour or so the drive that is connected to my airport will automatically wind down. This occurrence started to happen shortly after the system was updated to 7.4.2.
I have isolated the G-Drive and had no problems with it running alone.
Is there a way to stop this from happening without resetting the system?
    Thanks--R

I'm having the same issue. My 2 G-Drives were working and then all of a sudden stopped when connected to the AE. Works just fine when connected directly to the MBP.
Has anyone found a fix for this? Really quite annoying.

  • I have transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files.

I transfered all my library on an external hard disk and lost the itunes library files. Itunes created new ones but I lost all the playlists.
How can I copy the playlists presents on the Iphone directly on Itunes ?
If I want to syncronise now, I lost all playlists datas.

    Hi,
I did the same XP to Windows 7 upgrade about 18 months ago.   I decided to keep iTunes permanently on the external drive than the c drive to save c: drive space.
ITunes database has pointers to MP3 files located in Artist's directories.  If you want to use a different location than the default C:\ drive for iTunes, then you need to recreate the Itunes database by deleting all songs in iTunes, then change the default location for iTunes files to your external drive.  Then import the MP3 files from the external drive into the empty iTunes database through the iTunes import facility.
If you screw up the timing of the import and find you have multiple iTunes directories (instead of just the default location), then iTunes has a new feature to consolidate all iTunes MP3 files back into the central default location.  In iTunes, FILE, LIBRARY, ORGANIZE LIBRARY, then CONSOLIDATE FILES.
To change the default directory for MP3 files, in Tunes go to EDIT, PREFERENCES, ADVANCED and then CHANGE the location to where you want the Itunes MP3 files to be located (including the iTunes subdirectory under which all the artist directories are held.  Mine are on the F: drive or whatever your computer states is your drive assignment for the external drive.
Note iTunes 10.5 has many problems that Apple hopefully are working on....we seem to have gone backwards on working components in this iCloud based release.  So maybe keep on using old computer until 10.6 is released.
    Enjoy

      Windows XP

Happens, its a commonly documented error with Windows and alot of burning software installed on one machine.
Your going to have to work thru this article to resolve it. Now it is going to be in the registry to fix it. Which is pretty indepth. The document works tho. Used to work for a company that wrote burning software and we did this on a hourly basis. If your not comfortable, your going to need to find someone who is experenced in the registry.

  • Two external hard drives and Time Machine Problem

I have two external hard drives I use with Time Machine. One is for constant backup and the other I keep off-site and back up weekly.
Problem: Each time I connect a different hard drive it wants to start from scratch and create another new backup file. What I want is called smart copy in Superduper! but can't figure out how to do it on Time Machine
    Thank You

    Anybody?

  • Replaced my hard drive and now the problems begin

I replaced my 60GB hard drive with a Seagate 160 GB 5400rmp PATA drive following the instructions on iFixit. I reloaded 10.4 from my disk, and when prompted to connect another Mac on to my Mac to transfer data, I connected my LaCie external instead, which had a Carbon Copy Clone of my computer on it.
    NOW;
    1) if I leave the computer alone for 5 or so minutes, the display flashes on and off until I touch another key or the hard drive goes to sleep.
    2) Photo shop quits, and every time I try to restart it, quits again
    3) Quick time quits when I try go into Preferences and update.
    4) If I run a movie or stream video on Firefox or Safari, they quit.
I am upgrading to 10.4.11 in the hope that this fixes the problems, but if it doesn't..............
Is there a fix for any of these?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts and insight.
    Jamie

    eww;
Thanks for the welcome. I guessed you were going to suggest that I reformat the new hard drive and reboot with the external drive and then download everything from my external to my new internal. I tried that and after restarting and pressing "T" all I saw on my display was a floating fire wire symbol. In other words even though Carbon Copy Clone said that my external was a bootable drive, it didn't boot. So disk utilities wouldn't let me reformat the new internal drive because it was the start up drive.........
SO, I replaced the new hard drive in my computer with the old one, re formatted the external drive and made another Carbon Copy of my System Partition on my external drive thinking that the original copy wasn't a complete copy. This time I tried to restart using my external drive again. Again only the fire wire symbol.
I am at a loss as to what to do. I don't have another computer to down load into from my old computer and then up load with. I can't re format the new drive because I can't start my computer using my external drive, and I have less than 1 gb of open space left on my old internal hard drive, which is making my computer move slower than a snails pace.
Like I said, I am at a loss.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Did I not download something properly?
    Thanks;
    Jamie.

  • Installed new hard drive and flashing question mark appears

I bought a new hard drive for my macbook pro (mid 2009) because my original harddrive bit the dust... I purchased it off of amazon which states that its specifically for macbooks and the reviews appeared to back it up. I saw a lot of people with great reviews of the same model of macbook that I have so I figured it was the best solution.. I connected the new hard drive but I am getting the dreaded flashing folder/question mark. Is this normal before re-installing the OS x? Heres the problem, I am out of town on business and do not have the original OSx disc on hand. So my question is, is the flashing question mark normal upon installing a new harddrive? and if so, is there away to install the OSx onto the new harddrive without the disc?
my macbook was running mavericks before the harddrive went to poo, however I did try to re-install mavericks before i ultimately realized that I needed to new harddrive. I noticed that rebooting my mac with command+r would give me the option to reinstall mavericks without a disc or anything. the next question I have is, would this still be do-able on the new harddrive? I tried the command+R option on the new harddrive but nothing happens.
Can someone help me out here, I am getting a little desperate as I have gone over a week without my mac and theres so crucial things I need to get done! Luckily I have all my stuff backed up on an external hard drive, I just need to get the mac running again. Thanks for taking time to read!

    1. Yes, it is normal. If there's no OS on the drive, there's nothing to take the computer past that point.
    2. No, there's no way on that Mac model. You need to use an existing system(see #4).
    3. Not on that Mac model; it doesn't have the Internet Recovery system, and there isn't a recovery partition on the new drive.
    4. If the backup drive contains a bootable clone of any compatible OS, or a Time Machine backup created from Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, connect it and restart the computer with the Option key held down. If it doesn't contain either, you can't.
