Lion freezes after upgrading to SSD

Hi all,
I just purchased the Mac Mini with a 2.7 GHz Core i7 processor and independent graphics processor. The Mini came with a 750GB hard drive. I purchased separately a 120GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD, and I installed it as a second drive (using the installation kit from ifixit). I then installed Lion (10.7.2) on the SSD, and made the HD the location for my home directory.
Lion now freezes all the time. I'll be using one app (say, Safari) when suddenly I'll get the pinwheel of death. I find I can switch to another app, but then that will freeze too. After that, I can't do anything; nothing will respond. Eventually, the entire screen turns white. After that, all I can do is a hard reboot by holding down the power button. At first I thought it was Safari, since it seemed to happen most often when having that open. After switching to Firefox (my preferred browser anyway), the problem didn't apper for awhile. But since then, the same thing has happened while using other programs, such as Mail, and it has now happened with Firefox too. The freezing happens randomly: sometimes I've gone several hours without it happening; others, it's happened within a few minutes. It seems to happen when multiple programs are trying to read or write to the drive.
I think it might be related to the SSD based on googling around for similar issues. I installed the SSD the day I got the mini, so I'm not sure if it would have happened on the HD also. (I only booted to the HD a couple of times, to make sure it worked, and did not stay logged in very long.) As bad luck would have it, I started getting the freezing issues just after I had deleted the installation of Lion on the HD, so I can't switch to it to verify that it is the SSD.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone who has an OWC SSD has experienced similar problems, and if there was anything they were able to do to fix it. Is this a problem with Lion? Would downgrading to 10.6 help (if that's even possible)? I know there have been similar problems with other SSDs, but I thought the OWC Mecury Pros were top of the line.

I got my drive from OWC (6G SSD) on the 20th, so pretty much the same time as you.  The machine will hang randomly, usually around 45mins-90mins after a reboot.  Seems like we are having the same issue.  The solution given to me by OWC was to install the new firmware (http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/OWC/SSD).  Apparently a new version came out right after we ordered it.
My specs are:
Early 2011 15" MBP w/8GB RAM
Using the Data Doubler from OWC as well, which now houses my old HD (750GB)
Just so you don't waste the time I've already lost, I've tried the following:
Clean install of lion and the using migration assistant
Time Capsule restore
Disabled Sudden Motion Sensor
Disabled hibernation mode
Cleaned my cache using Onyx
I'm going to give the new firmware a shot, and will update here if there are any improvements.
At this point, if the firmware doesn't work, I wonder if there has been a bad batch of SSD drives at the point where we got ours.

    Hi JZN1994,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that after updating your computer to 10.9.3 iTunes stops responding when an iPhone is connected to it. There may be few different steps you will need to go through to get this resolved. I suggest working through the steps in the attached article.

  • Bluetooth Mighty Mouse keeps freezing after upgrading to Leopard

My bluetooth mighty mouse has frequent, intermittent freezes (which appear to be a loss of sync to the iMac) after upgrading to Leopard (now 10.5.1) from 10.4.11 on my iMac 24" alum body. This mouse was rock solid on my iMac running Tiger. Luckily I do have a corded mouse which I've been forced to use the past week or so.
    Can anyone suggest anything?
    Thanks.

I was just trying to help my Dad with the same exact issue (Mighty Mouse stops working on waking from sleep & trying to open bluetooth prefs at that point causes the system to lock up. Have to hold down power button to reboot)
Oddly I have Leopard on my iMac 2.16 Core 2 Duo and have no issues with my Mighty Mouse.
Hopefully someone comes up with an answer .... My Dad is 80 and just bought a new Powerbook and Mighty Mouse. It's hard to explain why the mouse doesn't work.

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

After upgrading from 7 to 8 my iPad 3 will freeze using email, safari, games.  I never ever had a problem before this upgrade.  Have done all the temporary suggestions but nothing is a permanent and will come right back.  I am so sorry that I upgraded, can not go back.  I really want to thank the IOS guys for screwing everything up.  Seems like old times with the Microsoft Tech guys.  I have no problem with my iPhone 6 Plus phone.

It seems to be caused by roboform 7.5.1. I upgraded to the latest version of robo and it's working now. Sorry mozilla, not your fault.. very frustrated.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.
    Any suggestions?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Kind regards

I did a clean install of mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and still it freezes at arbitary points. The very first time when it booted up it worked for longer and when I started to apply updates from app store, it froze. Successive boots froze much early, like within few seconds of booting.
I am going to check this by booting in safe mode.  I am losing hope with mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and will switch back to snow leopard (10.6.8) which was working seemless.
I checked so many things, based on other posts to make sure if my MBP is really Mid 2007. IT IS.
    Rgds,
    Raj.

  • Slow Sleep after upgrading to SSD

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I don't understand why but after upgrading my MBP to solid state drive 500GB the Sleep is now taking up to 30 seconds. My girlfriend has a similar MBP but with standard 750GB HD and going to Sleep only takes one or two seconds, in another words my mac is keeping the display active for up to 30 seconds every time I click on sleep buttom.
    here is my config:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro9,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.3 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          16 GB
      System Version:          OS X 10.8.5 (12F37)
      Kernel Version:          Darwin 12.5.0
      Boot Volume:          Macintosh HD
      Boot Mode:          Normal
Could you please share any knowledge you may have regarding this issue?
    Thanks,
    Gil

I found an article from a gentleman explaining how to turn off Safe Sleep Mode. I followed the instructions below:
    Turning Off Safe Sleep
Open the Terminal (in Applications > Utilities), then type the following command:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
Press Enter. You’ll be prompted to enter your password. Do so, then press Enter again.
    Next, type this command:
    sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
    Restart.
Now my MBP is going to sleep in seconds like before. I understand what it is happening, so my question now is, did it have the safe mode enabled when I had the HDD installed? Or is it trying to be smart and now that I have a SSD it decided to enable the Sleep Safe Mode thus increasing time before it sleeps because it is saving 16GB of RAM?
here is the link to the gentleman's article:
    https://www.rowlandblogs.org/users/robertquiroz/weblog/be6de/
Please SSD users let me know if you had to do the same thing.
    Have a great day!

  • Freezes after upgrade

My Mac Mini freezes a lot and sometimes the login cube don't stop spinning after upgrading to latest firmware. How can I solve that?

It sounds like something you have installed that boots drivers did not expect the firmware to change.  You can verify this by seeing if safe mode boots.  If it still has problems booting, then the firmware was not applied correctly, or there was already a hardware problem present that the firmware update simply brought to light.  Run then the hardware test that came with the Mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If there is nothing detected, it could still be a physical RAM issue. If the boot from safe mode works, then you need to eliminated all non-Apple hardware from the boot, and discover if any installed drivers aren't known to be compatible with that firmware by checking with their vendors.

  • IPhone 5 freezes after upgrading to iOS7

I've updated my iPhone 5 64Gb from 6.1.4 to iOS 7 yesterday via Wi-Fi. And after that upgrade the iPhone started to freeze randomly. Sometimes after opening notification center, sometimes after opening control center or settings, sometimes it reboots itself. But it constantly freezes after idling for 10-15 minutes. I've got a black screen and no reaction on any buttons and touchscreen, only soft reset helps (power+home for 10 seconds). I tried to restore it with my mac and itunes but not succeeded. I also tried to reset settings from iPhone but that also didn't help.
Any ideas except downgrading to 6.1.4?

This is pretty much the same thing that's happening to my iPhone 5 32GB. I installed it September 19 and worked flawlessly until today. So far, it's "bricked" itself (turning off) 3 times today and I have to hold power+home to get it to boot.
Seems fairly random. Bricked once while opening notification center, the last time was immediately after I received a text message while in the locked screen.

  • Why is my podcast application freezing after upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS7 ?

My podcast application is not working on my iPhone 4, after upgrading to iOS 7. What can I do to fix the problem ? Is it possible to play my podcasts on another application ?

Found the solution : deleted the frozen screen Podcast application, restarted the iPhone, downloaded the application again, deleted all podcasts from the application (edit, and delete one by one) and synchronized with iTunes via cable. Now it works !!!
IMPORTANT : before deleting all podcasts don't try to do anything else with the newly downloaded podcast app. it will freeze !!! and you have to delete and reinstall the application again !!!

After upgrading to Firefox 35 on Ubuntu 14.10, I keep experiencing browser freeze every time when I open a new tab. The browser freezes about 30 seconds when a new tab is launched.
Is there anyone encountering the same problem? and How can this problem be fixed?

Thanks for the reply. Tried, but didn't work. The freezing is actually trigged when I type in the address bar. I have tried different trouble shooting methods, but none of them works. The browser keeps freezing. There was no problem before upgrading to version 35. Maybe there is a bug. How can I submit a bug report?

    Try this:
Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and start the installation process. After you select the Language, the next screen will display a menu bar. Go to Utilities in the menu bar and select Disk Utility. When DU opens, select your drive on the left, click the First Aid tab (on the top) and click on Repair Disk.
When that is done, click Repair Permissions.
When that is done, quit DU and restart the computer in the usual way.

  • Not maximum size after upgrading the SSD on GT70 2PE Dominator

    I have a GT70 2PE Dominator Pro.
i upgraded the SSD to increase the size to be able to install more games.
I removed the two SSD (128g each under raid 0) and replaced with one Samsung EVO series 500g SSD.
But after running the recovery DVD on the new SSD, the program split the new SSD into two partitions.
one partition has 270g (OS install ) and the other 180g (data).
How do i recover the system with the new SSD (500g) with only one partition? so that i could have bigger space on drive C:

    Hi emorterajr,
There might be a way to use your Recovery DVD so that it allows you to control the partitioning of your new SSD. But I'm not familiar with it. It would be helpful to know how your SSD was partitioned to begin with. It might have been partitioned into those partitions from the factory. If it was, then you simply need to re-partition it like you want before using the Recovery DVD.
It is also possible to eliminate your 180 GB partition, then expand your 270 GB partition into that area and thereby make your "C" drive as big as possible. You'll need to obtain partitioning software that will do that. There used to be several programs available years ago for that purpose but I'm not sure what is available now. The trick is to grow your 270 GB partition without erasing it---many partitioning programs would erase your 270 GB partition if you resize it. But it can be done without losing anything---you just have to get the right software.
About capacity, the advertised size of an SSD or HD is almost always its unformatted capacity. Once the drive has been partitioned and formatted, the usable capacity is always less. Plus, if you are savvy and wise you'll understand about "wear leveling" which is used by SSDs to distribute use evenly across the entire storage area in order to prevent premature failure. This "wear leveling" works best if you leave a portion of your SSD unallocated. You'll read different advice around the internet about this. Some say to leave 5% unallocated. Others claim you need to leave 20% unallocated. I use 10%. What this means is that you'll only partition a total of 90% of the available capacity of your SSD and leave the remaining 10% unpartitioned. Obviously, this further reduces the available storage capacity.
Leaving part of our SSD unallocated is not essential---your SSD will operate okay even if its full capacity is allocated. But this technique will help you get the best life from your SSD and it will help it to maintain its read/write performance over that lifespan.
    Kind regards, David

  • OS X Lion crashes after upgrade to 10.7.4 halt by_netbios

After upgrading my 10.7.3 system to 10.7.4, the system crashes (shutdowns) on bootup. I booted into single user mode and the following is in the
/var/log/system.log file immediately preceeding the shutdown.

Anyone have any idea what would cause this and how to fix it?
If I do a clean install of 10.7.4 it boots fine.
I tried diabling likely but nothing seems to fix it.
I tried upgrading using the following methods and all fail
    10.7.4 upgrader
    10.7.4 combo upgrader
    10.7.4 software update
I also tried cleaning caches with Cocktail, running diskwarrior on the volume before upgrading etc.

This seems to be happening to quite a few people.
I've seen it suggested that booting into the recovery disk (power on while holding down 'command' and 'r'), going to Disk Utility in the menu bar and repairing the disk might help.
