Lion gives ghost icons on startup

Since upgrading to lion, any icons on the desktop appear transparent at startup.  They are surrounded by a dashed line and the label below is proprely written out.  Only by clicking and dragging the icon a little will it revert to the normal appearance of a folder, document etc.  Only the icon for the hard drive appears normally.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.

  • Ghost Icons on desktop after attempt to move them into a folder

I was trying to clean up my desktop so I highlighted a few files and tried dragging them into one folder. After this happened the icons that were highlighted remained on my desktop, completely grayed out with no way of clicking on it or moving it. when I checked the folder that was supposed to contain the files they were all there but the ghost icons remain on my desktop with no way of accessing them. Restarting will usually take care of the problem but I want to know if anyone can tell me why this is happening in the first place?

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • Ghost icons of imported videos are driving me crazy

    Hi all,
I searched and searched but I don't think anyone has my problem.  I imported a bunch of videos from a trip via the Apple Camera Adapter, and the videos were on my iPad and consuming about 20GB.  I tried to clean them, but they don't exactly go away.  They become these ghost icons on my iPad and viewed from iPhoto.  Deleting videos were often crashing iPhoto and the deleted ones were coming back to life, but after many tries I think they are just now ghost icons and are staying dead.
I just want to know how to eliminate them for good.  I am running iOS 7.1.
Here are the screen shots I took.  First I deleted a bunch, notice that iPhoto actually skips files when I tried to delete
Then some of the videos actually came back!  Crazy huh?  (Both screen shots were at the top of scrolling)
I finally got them all.  Now they won't go away.
When I tried to tap one of them, it will give me the following error message.
View from my iPhoto.  Different but equally annoying icons.

  • Strange Big Firewire Icon on Startup

I am on a 24" iMac and I am randomly getting a grey screen with a big scrolling firewire icon on startup. There seems to be a pattern. I start up and the icon appears so I restart hitting the power button (keyboard and mouse don't work) 3 to 4 times and the computer boots. I have no firewire peripherals plugged in. Aaaah, help

Just to make sure there are no issues with the startup volume and give it a clean bill of health, do a Repair Disk, Repair Permissions and Check for Preference File Corruption.
Repair Disk: boot from the installation DVD, once past the language selection initial screen, run Disk Utility off the Utilities menu and do Repair Disk. If any errors appear, repeat until none. If unable to get no errors, you will need something stronger, like Disk Warrior.
Repair Permissions: boot normally, run Disk Utility off the startup volume, do a Repair Permissions. Beware, Leopard takes an awfully long time to finish this. You don't need to repeat.
Check Preference Files: get a third-party utility such as [Onyx (free)|http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html] or [MacPilot (shareware)|http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php]. If using Onyx, follow the path Verify/Preferences. If using MacPilot, follow the path Tools/Disk & Files/Verify Preferences Files Integrity.
You can also try purging all caches, user and system. Also, how old is the iMac? Cause the internal backup battery may be dead or dying, causing PRAM corruption.

In that case, there may be a problem with your Finder preferences or window settings.
Try removing these files, then restarting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
Let me know if you're not sure how to do that.

After installing the mountain lion on my Mac at startup a stop sign appears and i cant loguin or do anything.. What should i do?

If you mean the "no entry" sign, a circle with a slash through it, then you need to reinstall Mountain Lion.
Boot into the Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r at startup tone until gray screen.
    From there, reinstall Mountain Lion.

  • How do I remove duplicate icon in Startup Manager?

    Hi,
I had an unsuccessful attempt at upgrading my already boot camp'd MacBook Air to Mavericks. After successfully upgrading to Mavericks, Startup Manager now shows 2 Mac volumes which are actually the same volume (both icons will startup the same Mac volume ok) as well as 1 Windows volume. How do I remove one of the duplicate Mac volume icons? Disk Utility only shows the 1 Mac partition and 1 Bootcamp partition running Windows.
    Thanks

From iTunes' menu, choose View > Show Duplicate Items.  Then choose one of each duplicate.  Control click on it and choose delete.

  • Ghost icon deletion problem

    Hi
I have iphone 4 running ios 7.1.2.Recently i got the usual app update of angry birds:star wars.As the automatic app update was getting downloaded,i deleted the app.It was then when things got weird. After successfully deleting the app, another angry bird icon appeared on my home screen showing the loading blue round circle.
I pressed the loading icon to turn it into "waiting",then pressed and hold the app icon to make it wiggle and clicked on x.That is when the things got weird.I couldn't delete the ghost icon and it is still on my home screen.i took the following steps to make the ghost icon disappear but none of them worked.
1.I re-downloaded the app from app store but instead got two app icons on my home screen. The clickable and working app icon and the ghost icon.I deleted the original app again and tried to delete the ghost icon by hold n press icon and clicking on x.But no luck.
2.I once again downloaded the original app and tried this method of going to settings-general-usage and waited for apps to populate and clicked on angry birds app and pressed delete app.The original app icon disappeared from home screen but ghost icon is still there.
    3. Long pressed both home button and sleep button to reset the phone. When phone restarted the bloody icon was still there.
    4. Signed out of app store and tried deleting the ghost icon but no luck there.
    5. I even reset the network settings.
Please help me to delete this ghost icon
    TIA

why would you delete the app when doing the update? its automatically updating the app thats on the home screen
as for deleting it try opening settings > general > usage, choose angry birds from the list and then choose "delete app"
if that doesnt work you could also try resetting your home screen layout, i do suggest a backup before doing this. settings > general > reset, choose "reset home screen layout"

  • I installed firefox on OSX Mountian Lion and the icon disappears off of dock when I restart

I installed firefox on OSX Mountian Lion and the icon disappears off of dock when I restart.  I get a question mark instead but when I click on it the firefox icon reappears.

Drag Firefox to a location on the hard disk and launch it from there instead of the mounted dmg.

  • Ghost icons/files on Mac HD

A few months ago I noticed the appearance of "ghost" icons, feint, marked "cores, bin, var, tmp, math_kernel, net alias", etc.  What do they indicate?  How can I delete them?
    Thanks, Mitoedit

Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    end if
    delay 2
    tell application "Finder" to run
If you change your mind later, run the script again.

  • Imac G5 ALS shows grey screen with blinking folder icon on startup

Helping a friend - her imac G5 got the blinking folder icon with question mark and grey screen and then wouldn't start. She had OS 10.4.11. I booted from install disk successfully- Disk Util said No repairs Necessary. Disk Warrior hung (never had that happen before). Performed Safe Boot. Multiple reboots were all successful.
But a few days later, it happened again. Then I did a clean install of 10.5 and all software updates. Restored her user folder from a clone I'd made before starting. All seemed well.
Now, the grey screen with folder question mark still occurs fairly often. If she restarts, she does get booted. (so far anyway)
My question: what do I need to do to resolve the grey screen with blinking folder icon on startup?
Additionally, the computer is slower than before. Does Leopard run slower on these machines than Tiger? (I'd already advised her to get more ram)
    Thanks for your help!

The blinking folder means just that, it can't find an OS to boot to. Tray zapping the PRAM and it wouldn't hurt to run Rember and if the RAM checks out, she might want to add some, 512 is really a minimum, and Leopard should really have at least 1GB.
