Lion Guest Account Question

I heard on a podcast that Lion 10.7.2 has a new guest account. It is different that previous versions guest account in that is the only access allowed when logged in under the guessed account is to safari for web browsing...i.e. no access to files or the finder. Is this true? I have upgraded to 10.7.2 on my macbook pro and the guest account still has all the same features of a standard account, which can be managed with parental controls of course.

What the podcast said is true. There is an additional Guest account, not the one that you see in System Preferences > Accounts, that gets enabled when you enable the Find My Mac feature within the iCloud settings. With FMM enabled, when you logout from your current account you will now see an additional Guest account, that is for the purpose mentioned in the podcast.

Mountain Lion Guest Account and Managed Account

I'm trying to setup a Managed Accout that has the ability to delete files on logoff. Just the same as a Guest account. Is this possible. Reason behind this is that, with the guest account. I currently have Office installed and everytime I launch the WORD. It gives me a pop up box that says Word would like to access contacts. Then it would ask me to personalized Office (basically treating it as a first time use) Is there any work around that.

How do I customize the Guest Account in Lion

There is a discussion thread on how to customize the dock for the Guest account in Leopard <https://discussions.apple.com/message/6511435#6511435> but I do not think it will work in Lion.
I would like to customize the desktop and dock for the Guest account. I want a true Guest Account that will erase files when they log out.

I'd like to go back to the original question. I don't see an answer here yet.
We just set up a new iMac in the front office and need the "Guest" account for those who float through the office. Unfortunately, the way it currently works, each time they open Microsoft Word they are asked to register since the user files are deleted.
I would also like to update the dock removing things they won't use like "Mail" and adding Pages and other applications they will use.
Other constant customizations would be great (setting system preferences like printer, custom desktop, Safari Home Page, etc.) but at least not having them asked to register applications each time would be good.
The original poster, Richard, added a link to how to do it in Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work in Lion.
Anyone figure out how to do this in LION yet?

Question marks on guest account dock???

I logged onto the guest account and another non-admin account only to find questions marks on the dock where all of the application links should be. When I click on the applications folder, I get a message saying I do not have access to that folder. The admin account appears to be normal. I didn't do anything to cause this...just happened out of the blue. Does anyone know what might have happened?

Thanks, Niel. I ran the disk utility as you suggested. It reported a bunch of access settings that were seemingly incorrect. And they were related to applications on the dock, so I was hopeful. When it finished, I logged in as guest, and the question marks were still there and access was still denied to the application folder. Do I need restart before the changes take effect?

After upgrading to Lion, and then running fire vault I've lost my guest account from log-in and can't edit it in system preferences!

I upgraded successfully to Lion.
I then decrypted the legacy filevault and started the new firevault.
After this completed I noticed that I no longer have a guest account at log-in.
And I am unable to edit the guest account at system preferences even though I am admin.
(The guest account is unticked in system preferences - allow users to login).

Same here. Looks file FileVault2 disables the possibility to use a Guest Account as it enforces all accounts to have a password. In addition Auto Login is no longer possible. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4790 for details.

I recently upgraded to Lion and am using the current version. I cannot remove the guest account from the startup screen. I disabled it in the system pref but it still appears.

I downloaded and installed the most recent verison of Lion for my iMac. After doing so I noticed that my start up screen now has a "guest" account. I went into settings and disabled the "guest" account. Still, the startup sceen displays a "guest" account and allows one to start the computer in a "safari" only mode.
How do I removed the "guest" account from the start up screen and disable access via the "guest" account?

Macbook Pro OS Lion couldn't access guest account and new user account

Hi I bought this new MacBook Pro a month ago. When I try logging into my guest account, it froze. I had no other alternative but to get out of it by pressing the power button. Then I tried open a new user account to see if it also has the same problem. Unfortunately it did have the same problem - froze after I logged in. I had done a harddisk check, there seemed to be no problem. So I wonder if this is a common problem of OS Lion? And are there any way for me to solve the problem?

That is not a common problem with Lion.
My suggestion is to take it to Apple and ask them to fix. Besides if you take it Apple then they are aware of your problem just in case it returns in the future.
You might try a safe boot by holding down Shift during boot and seeing if that tells you anything.

When i upgraded to Lion, it deleted my main user account and only left my guest account, how can i fix this?

My main user account was deleted, and only my guest account remained. I don't know my password for the guest account anymore, so i couldn't log in, i had to use my time machine to restore to the day before when i was on 10.6.7. How do i fix this?

I've stumbled upon the solution to get back into our machines.
At the login screen, when presented with 'guest account' only, do the following:
tap enter while holding down 'control' + 'option' + 'command'
...you should be reunited with your usual login personalities.

Permanently Modify Mac OS X Guest Account (Mac) Mountain Lion

Hey All,
i am shure, some of u might know the problem.
So, everytime u close a guest account, all data gets erased. And as well all settings get reset.
So, i searched around quite a bit, and what came out as helping the most is the following:
1. enable guest account
2. enable fast user swithing
3. switch to guest account
3. do ALL ure settings, run all apps and programs, that need registration, and so on. some more often for not asking u stuff again..
Modifiy the Dock, change Desktop, etc...
(dont forget to CLOSE/END all Programs, otherwise they will be started everytime user logs in.)
4. simply fast-change to main account without closing the guest account.
and then the trouble started... coping, giving yourself rights, etc... videos online about it, etc...
easiest thing to to is the following:
5. execute the following command in a terminal window:
sudo cp -r /Users/Guest/ /System/Library/User\ Template/English.lproj/
!!! Importent for other language users then english !!!
when u run ure systems mainly in another language, u need to do it ALSO with that language. OS X seems to be mixing information. so simply past line
AGAIN, but change last language part.
sudo cp -r /Users/Guest/ /System/Library/User\ Template/German.lproj/
some ppl said, it is also possible while logged into the guest account. Doesnt work for me, cause guest account want the
guest-account password. which i dont have, or is somewhere hidden in system files.
And for ppl that what to copie settings across systems, beware, there is a "Keychain"-Folder that messes up the accounts.
u cant copie that one around.

You are really confusing this here:
The idea of the Apple Standard Guest access is to let a person use your computer just now for an hour or two without being able to make any lasting changes to your Mac.
He can use your applications, he can save his documents, access webmail etc. etc. And he can then connect to remote servers and store his work there or he can use his email to send his new documents via email.
When he log out again the guest user will be empty, set back to standard and that ready to be lent out to the next user.
IF YOU WANT A PERMANENT ACCOUNT FOR SOMEBODY ELSE - ONE OR MORE PEOPLE SHARING
Create a new account, call it something understandable, like Michaels guests and give the rights to those users you would like to give them. You could even give them access without a password, like with the guest account, although this is definitely not a good advice.
This should, I hope, help.
And you should not have to go to the terminal or use other strange and radical methods to accomplish your goals

Guest Account Login forced Lion Installation

I wanted to let me friend log into my MBA 2010's Guest account. Now I am forced into Disk Utilities after every restart, I can't log back in.
WHat can I do?

2. What do you mean 'forced into Disk Utilities after every restart'? Do you mean the OS boots up into the Recovery partition? What is the context in which the DU window appears?

Guest account campus question

I want to setup some application prefrences but still would like ot use a guest account -- how can I do this ?

I found that I also needed to delete the contents of the Keychain folder from the English.lproj library, but NOT the folder itself to keep from having keychain issues, particularly with Chrome.
All our students use the guest account and just log in to their Google account in Chrome once in. It has saved us a ton of headaches.
One caveat is that anytime you make a local account now, it will get whatever you set up in this procedure. Which actually is usually better anyway.

Unable to permanently modify Guest Account in Mavericks

I have modified the Guest Account to customize the dock, set homepages and go through first-run sequences in Mountain Lion in the past, but when I follow the same instructions in Mavericks I run into a rat's nest of hidden folders.
I am also trying to copy settings for a new copy of Final Cut Pro, but I don't believe that was the reason I was unable to successfully overwrite my User Template/English.lproj/Library folder.
Any help out there? I'm willing to execute terminal commands, but not too smart about them, so my question might turn into: Do I muck about a lot with unfamiliar and untried commands in Mavericks or roll back to Mountain Lion and do what I know how to do...

I work in a Public Library and I have been able to customize the Guest User so that:
Homepages for Browsers are set
"First Run" personalization does not need to be done - esp. MS Office
Certain Apple Apps are suppressed (Mail, Contacts etc.)
Icons appear in the dock for software (Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office)
But Mavericks makes many more folders hidden and inaccessible than Mountain Lion did
