Lion Install thinks that the system disk "Macintosh HD" is not Mac OS Extended (journaled); it is. Exactly what do I do in Disk Utility to "reformat" the disk, I don't see that listed on the menus.

Error Message, during installation of Lion; “This disk is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Use Disk Utility to enable journaling or reformat the disk.”  The disk I selected to install OS X on, was the only one listed, “Macintosh HD”. The results of a Disk Utility check are; Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled), Name: Macintosh HD. There is a fresh Time Machine backup. The computer was Restarted and installation attempted again - same result. I have downloaded Lion a second time, and tired install again, same results. The computer is a December 2007, iMac 24” with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Memory, s/w version 10.7.5; Disk Capacity 319 GB, Available 117 GB. Macintosh HD has alway been the system disk, does it now have an identity crisis? Would reformatting the disk mean Erasing it? Exactly what do I do in Disk Utility to “reformat” the disk, I don’t see that listed on the menus. This computer is getting cranky, I no longer Shut Down at night, only Sleep. If it’s Shut Down, the next morning I am treated to a white screen, for a long time, before it finally shows me the Log On Screen.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

RRFS - This took me a long time to finally get to a fix. Your reply led me to investigate the Repair Disk Partition - as it turned out there wasn't one; the HardDrive was going bad slowly. The 10 to 40 minutes it took to startup in the morning, was the HD trying to find it's way. I had the 320GB HD replaced with a 2TB HD. All is OK now. Thank You very much!!  Also, the Apple store geeks couldn't make it better but the locally owned Apple retailer did just great with it. from San Luis Obispo County - Peace.

  • Snow Leopard won't install because drive is not Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

I cannot install Snow Leopard (from regular Leopard) on my other 21" Intel iMac (not this one) because the hard drive is apparently only Mac OS Extended and NOT Mac OS Extended "(Journaled)".
Is there a fix for this? Everything else on the computer is working fine (and has been for a few years)
I'm not sure how it got that way but a few years ago I used Disk Warrior to correct some problems - maybe I re-imaged the hard rive using Disk Warrior into the wrong format?
Disk Utility confirms that the hard rive is indeed Mac OS Extended (what is the difference with "Journaled" anyway?).
I'm loathe to erase the disk, reformat, and use Time Machine to reload the data (what if the back-up drive is incompatible with the reformatted Mac OS Extended Journaled)? Maybe I can use Disk Warrior to re-image the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Please advise best way to handle this situation.
    Thanks!

If you are certain the only problem is that the startup volume is not Mac OS Extended "(Journaled)" you may be able to fix this with Disk Utility: Select the volume in the list, then press command + j or select "Enable Journaling" from Disk Utility's File menu.
However, the reason the Snow Leopard installer may not allow the install is because the drive must be formatted with the *GUID Partition Table* Partition Map Scheme. If you, you will have to reformat the drive. To determine the Partition Map Scheme, select the drive (not the volume name indented below it) in Disk Utility & look at the last line of info in the window.

  • How to format an external hard disk Mac Os Extended (Journaled)?

    hello
I connect an external hard disk (2.5' IDE Western Digital Scorpio Blue, WD2500BEVE) via USB or FireWire to my Mac mini. The Disk Utility tool shows an external disk drive of 128 GB - but the disk has 250 GB. How can I format the external USB/Firewire-harddisk 250 GB "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"?
I tried also to format the disk on a Windows PC (Windows XP). But I could not find a software to format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Any hints on this? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

As I use theses hard disks in a external hard disk case, I'm asking me whether my hard disk cases do not support more that 128 GB disk capacity. Is that realistic?
It is not only realistic but probably the reason your Mac cannot see more than 128 GB of the capacity of the drives mounted in them. It has nothing to do with the interface between the Mac & case (like Firewire) but instead with the controller in the case that connects the raw ATA drive to that interface. Older ATA standards used a 28 bit LBA (logical block address) scheme to access the disk. For 512 bytes per sector this works out to a maximum of 128 GB of addressable disk capacity. The ATA-6 standard, also called Ultra-ATA/100 or just ATA-100, increased the bits in the address space from 28 to 48, with a disk capacity limit of 2 petabytes.
ATA-6 was introduced in 2001, so any external drive case made before then for ATA drives will be forever limited to 128 G. Even now, some come with a controller that does not support the ATA-6 standard, & essentially none have all the hardware to support its full 48 bits of address capacity. However, since 2 PB (2000 terabyte) drives won't be available anytime soon, all you really need is a case that is ATA-6 or better compliant & supports enough address bits for the largest drive you intend ever to put in it.
Case makers don't usually make this information easily available but many now include a "bullet" spec about the maximum capacity their case supports, typically rounded off to simple numbers like 320 GB, 500 GB, or whatever. If you can't find this info, you can assume that the newer the case the more likely it is to support larger capacity drives, or just buy one with a good return policy & test it yourself with the largest raw drive you own.

  • Bought new Hitachi HD can't install Mac osx there is no destination drive and i already formatted to mac os extended journaled

So i tried upgrading my hard drive to a new hitachi HD and when i tried using the mac osx dvd it doesn't find the hard drive in the destination page. i formatted it to mac os extended journaled with 1 partition and nothing i'm stuck.... here is a picture of the disk utility page i took a screenshot of.... please help

"i tried upgrading my hard drive to a new hitachi HD"
Your havnt said what your trying to do so your posts are very confusing
with this new drive do you want to:
install the operating system on the new drive
format the drive to use it as storage
    create a standby bootable drive
    something else entirely
Your screen shots show you have an internel drive and three other drives
The drive you have erased is an external USB connected drive - youv erased and partitioned the drive and it shows it is working OK
what do you want to do now?
if the idea is to replace your original systen drive with this new drive youv bought the wrong kind of drive it should have been an internal drive
but you need to explain wahat as the drive shows it functioning correctly

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select

Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item.

        Hi Atepastt,
Congrats on your new Z10! I know having the right features is important. The Z10 uses Blackberry link software. The device uses the mobile hotspot feature to non-cord tether the device. The mobile hotspot feature is an additional cost. You can add this feature online http://vz.to/1di2TlT .

  • Mac Fusion drive: The disk "Macintosh HD" could not be unmounted

    Hi
I recently purchased a Mac Mini with the fusion drive.  When I perform a verify and repair of the disk, I get the error "The disk Macintosh HD could not be unmounted".  This does not occur with any of my other computers, imac or powermac (also running mountain lion).  So I am wondering if I have a defective Fusion/HD or if this is simply a peculiarity of the fusion drive itself.  Please comment.

If your Fusion drive can be repaired with Disk Utility, it will be shown with red lettering. If you are not seeing red lettering, then you need to boot into Recovery mode to use that Disk Utility. When you order a Fusion drive equipped Mac, there is a special version of Disk Utility included in OS X specifically for operation with Fusion Drives.
If you have any open files on the volume you wish to verify/repair, then Disk Utility will throw its hands up and give you that cannot unmount drive message. Make sure you have quit all applications you were using that may be accessing files on the disk in question.

I seem to have deleted Passbook off my iPhone. How can I get it back? I can't see it listed in the appstore anywhere.

It is not possible to delete any of the bundled apps. You may have moved it to another home screen or inadvertently dropped it into a folder. If you search for the app or reset the home screen layout - Settings/General/Reset - that should bring it back to the default location. There also may be a setting to turn Passbook off in the General/Restrictions, but not having an iPhone with iOS 6 I'm not sure.

Can you use Apple Pay without also needing to use a passcode to unlock your phone? I don't see that combination of options in settings.

I too don't like this. I would like to be able to use Touch ID for purchases on the App Store, Apple Pay, & Apple Store without having to use a passcode to unlock my phone. Why not allow the Touch ID to be app specific? Let us use it when we need it, not force us to use it for everything or nothing at all. That ***** that you have to set up a Passcode for your phone if you want to use Apple Pay. I didn't know about that. I haven't set that up yet because I'm waiting for them to support my credit card. Now I'm thinking I may not use Apple Pay. What a pain! Come on Apple, let us pick and choose what we want to lock down on our phones!!!

I want to reformat my external hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted ) but before formatting it, I want to make sure that if I loose the hard drive or the hard drive get stolen, no one will be able to retrieve or recover the information on it so could you tell me what kind of encryption will be used or is there any way to recover the information?
    Thanks!

I think FileVault is used to encryp internal hard drive but I wanna encrypt an external hard drive with Mac OS Extended Journaled Encrypted which is completely different!
