Lion: limited room for name desktop icons?

Lion seems to reserve only one line underneath a desktop icon for its name (OS 10.6 two). Names are also shortend if they threathen to get as wide as the icon size. It means you can only use short folder names.
With the smalles fontsize (10) you need an icon size of at least 100x100 to be able to use a proper name. That's a rediculous icon size, even on a 1680x1050 screen.
I store frequently used items in folders on my desktop. Am I the only one who is bothered by this? Or am i missing something?
Jerry.

If you haven't already done so, try clicking on the Desktop, type command-J, and in the resulting View Options window,  increase the "Grid Spacing."  If the Grid Spacing is set too low, you will lose the second line of the label as well as the middle portion of the text:

  • Limiting lowermost position of desktop icons

I use a third-party launch bar which is positioned horizontally along the bottom of the screen. Although it has a transparency feature, one inconvenience is that it obscures the lowermost desktop icons, and I periodically have to move it out of the way to find some icon I'm looking for.
Is there a way to limit the lowermost position of desktop icons so there is a clear space along the bottom of the screen? With my 21 inch monitor set to 1600x1200, I would need about 160 pixels of clear space to accommodate the launch bar without obscuring icons.
    Thanks in advance.

That's interesting. On my machine, all newly saved items fall right under the right-hand disk icons, populating down the screen's right-hand side. None go under the Dock, which does have some room on either side of my screen. Been that way since the Jaguar days, but then again, I've never used any view options for the desktop folder. Always found them a nuisance. Sorry I couldn't help. Good luck.

  • Applescript for hiding desktop-icons?

    Hi,
Is there a script for hiding the desktop-icons or moving them (temporarily)
to a map (on my extra harddisc) ,so I have a plain-colored background for working with Logic?
    Ron.

    Hi Chachi,
    Thanks for the script!!
The second time I run it ,it returns to the desktop like it was.Nice work!
When I close (by accident) the computer without returning to the desktop with icons, will it still be possible to return to it the next time I open the computer and I run the script?
And is it not "straining"(?) the computer?
A few days ago I downloaded "Desktop Curtain" .
I made a simple script to run it together with logic.
tell application "Desktop Curtain" to activate
tell application "Logic Pro" to activate
(I didn't need a 'end tell' at the end?)
If I want, it covers the desktop (also the image on my desktop!) with a plain color of my choice.
But it covers only one monitor, and I have two monitors.
Is it possible to make a script to also cover the second monitor?
Maybe with a second Desktop Curtain?
    Greetings. Ron.

  • FIX for moving desktop icons!!:)

Download OnyX , click the maintenance icon then the ' Rebuild' tab then tick 'Display of folder's content then click 'Execute'. Booom Done.

Yep, Onyx is the best free utility I've found yet and solves a host of issues.
I usually tell people to run ALL of it's maintenance and cleaning aspects, they get a clean machine, the caches get rebuilt, their maintenance gets done, their permissions etc as well as their smart status and so forth all get checked.
If they have a more serious issue with the drive, then OnyX will tell them and they tell me which I can then advise them to get their data off immediately as their drive is failing etc.
It also teaches them to fish, thus they learn how to do some basic repairs themselves, if they do all that and then come back and say their problems wasn't fixed, then I know to look elsewhere.

  • Strange behaviour of name used for desktop icon when mounting SMB shares

My iMac is joined to a Windows Active Directory domain. This works fine. User logins are setup to mount various Windows shares at login time using some custom scripts that I have written, invoked from an Applescript app that runs as a login item. Again this works very nicely. The one strange thing is as follows, and this is troublesome for me...
The sequence of commands used to perform the mount is:
    mkdir /Volumes/mountpoint
    mount -t smbfs //servername/sharename /Volumes/mountpoint
This correctly mounts the share on /Volumes/mountpoint
but the desktop icon that appears as a result is called 'sharename' not 'mountpoint'. Why is this a problem? Well consider that one has the following shares that one wants to mount:
//Server1/System (will be mounted on /Volumes/Server1System)
//Server2/System (will be mounted on //Volumes/Server2System)
what I'd like to see are two desktop icons with names 'Server1System' and 'Server2System' but in fact I end up with two icons both called 'System' with no way to tell which is which other than actually opening one of them in Finder.
    Anyone know
    (a)    Is this behaviour expected (i.e. by design)?
    (b)    Is there a way to control the name used for the desktop icon when mounting things this way?
    Thanks!

But, to invoke your app you will need to include it, otherwise you get the error above
    sometimes you call
    http://host:port/blank/page.jsp
    instead of
    http://host:port/blank/faces/page.jsp
In the last one the Faces Servlet will get your request and locate page.jsp inside the faces context. If you don't include it then you get that error

Have you purchased a perpetual license or subscribed to a Cloud plan?
To access Lightroom Mobile you must subscribe to a Cloud plan.
    Adobe Lightroom mobile – FAQ
"Does Lightroom 5 include access to Lightroom mobile?
Lightroom mobile is included as part of the following Creative Cloud membership plans:
    - Creative Cloud Photography plan
    - Photoshop Photography Program
    - Creative Cloud complete plan
    - Creative Cloud Student and Teacher Edition
    - Creative Cloud for teams complete plan
If you have access to Lightroom 5 via your Creative Cloud membership, then you have access to Lightroom mobile.
Since Lightroom mobile is a service, it is available only via membership plans. Lightroom 5 perpetual license does not include access to Lightroom mobile"

  • Redirected Desktop Icons auto arranging and grid aligning randomly

    Hi,
I'm having an issue with desktop icons losing position and auto arranging randomly. Users have desktop redirected, auto arrange and grid is off. They are WIN 7 Machines that are part of a domain, it occurs a couple times a week. No virus or malware.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
As far as I know, there is no group policy for controlling desktop icons arrangement.
Besides, we can try turning on Align icons to grid to see if it helps.
In addition, we can also try asking help in the following Windows 7 forum.

First, you are running a very old version of Firefox. Please update to Firefox 11 ASAP.
As for your desktop icons, read [http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/changing-windows-7-desktop-icons-size.aspx http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/changing-windows-7-desktop-icons-size.aspx]. Mac OS X 10.8.2
Use Software Update or the OS 10.8.4 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.
    Report back the results.

  • Desktop icons disappear intermittently with Lion 10.7.3

Some of my desktop icons "disappear" intermittently ( not always the same icon(s)).  The title
still appears but the icon is blank. I can still click on the blank spot and the app will launch.
Annoying but not "fatal" - Anyone have any ideas ??
Oh and my personal "Avatar" photo also reverts to an earlier choice ( intermittently ) as well.
Can change it to the one I want to use but it reverts back to the old picture also from time to time ...
Maybe part of the same "problem".

    Hi..
    MIght be corrupted preferences (.plist)

  • Full desktop icon name visibility

my desktop icons have an ellipses (e.g "xxx...xxx.filetype") on them. Is there a way to see the full name of the file?
I don't seem to see this in the GetInfo dialog and clicking in the window as if I was going to rename it is really a PITA.
In this case I have three scans in pdf form and all start with "taxes" and end with "...y.pdf".
    Any ideas?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi j.
    Thank you.
Man - I seem to be in a continuing debate as to whether I should do a full reinstall of the OS even though I definitely do not have the time for this right now.
Can you tell me whether the fact that I did this (sounds like a good suggestion) and then the icons on my desktop all got basically slapped up against the right hand side of my desktop on my MacPro tower? I mean is this /normal/ behavior?
I have to totally re-configure my desktop icons because I just changed the grid size?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Extend supported icon sizes for AIR Desktop Apps

Currently AIR Desktop Apps seem to only support a limited set of icon sizes (16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128px).
It would be great to see bigger icon sizes (like 256x256 and 512x512px) being supported as well. For example, Windows7 does not display 128x128px icon size so the maximum icon size for AIR apps on Windows is currently 48x48px (which actually is pretty small and results in pixelated icons).
Can you please consider the option of extending supported icon sizes?

Feature request for this issue: Bug#3844899 - Adobe AIR does not support 256x256 desktop icons on Windows Vista, 7 or 8.x
