Lion lost my custom document icons

I have a couple of custom icons for documents of  particular File Types that are gone since I upgraded to Lion. By File Type I mean the old-style Classic kind, as in Type/Creator. The files have no extensions. These documents belong to an old Carbon application that has its own Type codes, one of which is ASQ4, for instance.
I did a search for files like this, and found that some of the files' icons were generic page-type icons, some were the dark gray executable Unix type, and perhaps half were completely missing- no icon at all.
Has something changed recently in the way icons are shown or assigned? Can I get the old icons back, or at least restore them from saved files? I've repaired permissions and restarted.

I just upgraded to OS X 10.7.4, and now my icons are back.

    help! i've modified (via copy and paste in "get info") one of my pages documents so it has a new document icon. then i dragged the document to the dock for easy access. it appears on the dock with its new customized icon. so far so good....
    HOWEVER, whenever i click it, pages launches and REVERTS the icon back to the pages default document icon. any idea why this is happening? any idea how to make my customized icon stick?!?
    thanks!

    as i understand it, this is a fault with copying packages.

  • Custom document icons

    I've been trying to create custom icons for some Excel documents. I have no problem changing the icon. The problem seems to be that once I change the workbook, resave the document and then restart the computer, it goes back to a generic icon again. Any suggestions?

    Just tried it myself and you are right. Leave to Microsoft to do something weird with their apps. I've change Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign but don't use MS Office very much so never bothered.
    There is no other app that does what CandyBar does that I know of so I'm afraid you are out of luck. Unless someone can tell you how to get into the guts of the Mac and change the icon manually. Or do some googling and see if you can find it. Or write to the CandyBar people and see if they have a workaround.
    The only other option is Iconit:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8839
    This is like an icon catalog. It puts an icon up in the top right menu with a drop down menu with all your icons in it. Just select a file, go to Iconit and place what you want. Fastest and easiest way to change an icon, but you'll still have to change it each time you save a document.
    Or, if you have categories of files make folders with the desired icons and save your files to each folder, which won't change with each saving.

  • Lost my document icon on bottom of screen.

    I lost the document icon on the bottom of my screen. How can I get it back?

    Click on the house icon in the Finder's sidebar and drag it back from there. In recent Mac OS X versions, you can also drag it back directly from the sidebar.

  • Acrobat 8.1 Pro Recent Update Lost PDF Document Icon

    Adobe Acrobat 8.1 on Windows Vista. With the update that came on 02/15/2008, after successful install, I no longer have any PDF document icons. All my PDF documents have the Windows generic icon and the files are not recognizeable as PDF documents. All PDF documents function normally. it's just the icons are missing. My .pdf file association is with Adobe Acrobat 8.1. Any way to get back my PDF icons on PDF files?

    Same problem here, and, as in your case, it showed up only after the most recent Adobe update--in fact, I started a topic on this before you did. Maybe you didn't see it--nobody else has posted a reply, either.
    The 2/18 reply-poster's FAQ link concerns file associations, but that's not the problem here; file associations are still correct. The problem is that what are called LIVE ICONS in Vista no longer work for PDF files. The 'preview handler' underlying functionality still seems to work--that is, if you have the PREVIEW PANE enabled in Windows Explorer you can still see an accurate, detailed thumb of the file. (You access the preview pane under Organize>Layout.)
    But the smaller, quick-and-dirtier preview that should show if you have the folder view set to 'large icons' or 'extra large icons', and that should also show in the DETAILS PANE, if you have that enabled, is gone--only a generic Acrobat icon now shows.
    In Vista, these live icons are automatically enabled on the desktop, at least if you have the 'aero' graphics turned on. Thus, if you drag a .jpg, .gif, or similar file onto your desktop, you now see a thumbnail instead of the generic icon you saw in previous Windows desktops. Up until last week's update, you also saw .pdf previews on the desktop. But no longer.
    I have no better clue than you do about how to get them back. The preview handler designations in the Registry don't show any obvious problem, although the recent Adobe update may have made changes in there that I'm not aware of. (In the CLSID and CLASS keys, for instance.)
    My guess would be that there's some changed .dll that didn't get registered properly, or have the right permissions assigned, in the recent update. But this is just a sheer guess. Given all the problems with Acrobat 8 I've seen in these forums, I'm not going to go blindly experimenting on CLSID/Class keys or dlls.
    I can't find anything at Microsoft.com or the Microsoft KB about this either--just boilerplate promo for users or developers about how great their live icons are. But for what it's worth, Acrobat is not the only program that has trouble with Live Icons. Microsoft office 2007 live icons are just as screwed up as the PDF ones have become. In fact, they have been screwed up from the beginning!
    Once in a great while an Excel 2007 .xlsx file sitting on the desktop will show its preview. But most of the time, just the generic icon shows. I have never managed to see a live icon for a Microsoft Word file. Only .jpgs and .gifs are completely reliable (so far, knock on wood).
    Pretty lame.
    By the way, there were also Windows Updates last week ('patch tuesday') and it is slightly possible that they had something to do with this lost functionality. But I don't think so. I can't spend all my time tracking & troubleshooting every update of everything, so I can't state this with 100% certainty, but I am PRETTY sure that the .pdf file live icon problem happened AFTER the last Adobe update and BEFORE the last Windows update.
    I wish the Adobe Updater would have a convenient way of showing you which updates were installed when. Vista has this.

  • How to print custom documents through custom program

    Hi,
    I am printing custom documents like Commercial Invoice, Shipper's Letter of Instructions,  Shipper's Export Declaration , using communication tab of custom declarations. SInce user wanted output with a changed layout( different from standard), so new Activity messages ( like ZP100 in place of standard P100) are created to call Z forms ( new PDF from created using SFP and called for this Message type). This part is done our fucntional team. This customize message type is calling my custom Z forms. But all these Z forms are not allowing printing of the document from Preview of PDF. Print Icon become disabled in the preview. Used wants to print from preview of PDF itself.
    There is a parameter in BADI  DOC_PERSONALIZE_BCS method parameter 'NOPRINT', which is passed with value 'X' in the function module to create PDF. SInce this is set to 'X' it is not letting us print from preview.
    So, can anyone help me in finding what can I do to get this print enabled from preview. If I need to change this method, then what are the steps and how standard configurations will be changed to call Zprogram in place of standard.

    Hi Swati,
    The Badi you mentioned should help you, try changing the importing parameter in your local structure and pass this local variable, instead of the imported (IS_outputparams-noprint = 'X' ) to the function below. This is an example, you`ll need to declare data as well :
    Method IF_EX_DOC_PERSONALIZE_BCS~PERSONALIZE_PDF_DOC_PDFIF
    ls_output_options = is_outputparams.
      IF NOT ls_output_options-preview IS INITIAL.
        ls_output_options-noprint = ' ' .    " Allow printing
       ENDIF.
    call function '/SAPSLL/PRN_FORM_PROCESS_PDF'
        exporting
          iv_guid_cuhd       = lv_guid_cuhd
          iv_function_name   = ip_function_name
          iv_form_name       = ip_form_name
          iv_appl_log_handle = ip_application_log
          is_output_options  = ls_outputparams " put your LOCAL structure here ....
        importing
          es_formoutput      = es_formoutput
          es_joboutput       = es_joboutput
        changing
          cs_docparams       = cs_docparams
        exceptions
          output_canceled    = 1
          others             = 2.

  • Invoice image in vendor and customer document

    Hello,
    We have got following requirement.
    Currently we are storing pysical invoice copies of vendor and customer in a pysical file. But now we want to see the image of invoices in vendor and customer document respectively.
    It means, if it is possible to have an attachment button or some icon available when we see vendor and customer document.
    Please advise how can we link the pysical invoice with SAP document. And is this something related to DMS or Archivieng Link.
    Please suggest.
    Best Regards,
    Tapan

    Hi Tapan,
    At my company we are currently doing just this.
    We have a server outside of SAP that stores our images.  We did not want to store the images within SAP.
    We use the SAP document number to link the image to the SAP document.
    We do all our AP input from images. After an invoice is entered, and the document number is generated, we forward the image to a
    e mail address for the server using the document number in the subject line. The image gets attached to the document. Then the image can be viewed by clicking on the Services for object icon.
    I am sure there is some more techical stuff that goes this, like an RFC connection. I am sorry I am not technical. I am the functionala AP person. We also have a program that takes the image and attaches it to the cross company document if there is one.
    Hope this gives you some ideas.

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

    I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
    This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
    I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
    Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

    It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • Document icons showing for aliases, folders with .

    After rebuilding launch services database to resolve other issues, I'm now seeing a display glitch as follows:
    aliases folders, symlinks to folders, and any folder that has a name ending with a period are showing as a generic 180x180 plist document with an alias arrow in the corner:
    As you can see the problem is intermittent. Most have this problem, but some don't.  Issue is the same in the Finder or Path Finder.
    The keen among you will notice the folder color.  I replaced system icons in the CoreTypes bundle with those from Mavericks (because I hated the Yosemite blue color).  This could have something to do with the issue but can't really see how, as the problem didn't exist after changing the the system folder icons across many reboots; only after rebuilding launch services database.
    The get info from Path Finder shows everything the same:
    Kind: alias
    UTI: com.apple.alias-file
    alias bit: on
    custom icon: false
    type: fdrp
    creator: MACS
    permissions: 644
    owner: (me); group: staff
    open with (oddly): ViewIt
    The size is weird. On the incorrect one, it's 300kb, on the correct one it's 1.8MB. Though maybe those are the right sizes considering they are each folders that contain other folders.
    For the folders that end in a period:
    kind: folder
    UTI: public.folder
    alias bit: off, custom icon: false
    permissions: 755, owner (me); group (staff)
    open with (oddly): Path Finder
    A similar sort of problem is posted here, but it doesn't seem to help.  I could try trashing ViewIt, but not PathFinder:
    Re: Icons for Aliases not Showing up...
    Any ideas?

    Seems this was a problem with PlistEdit Pro. (as I should have guessed from the document icon.)  Trashing that app and rebuilding icon cache and rebooting worked.

  • Old Lion Finder bug reappears in Mountain Lion -- lost options

    There were a number of problems with the Finder View options under Lion which were fixed bit-by-by, upgrade-by-upgrade.
    In general, folder placement was scrambled and view options were lost/reset after certain operations.
    Now, with Mountain Lion, some of these problems have resurfaced:
    -- I use Show View Options to increase the size of icons and to set the background of a folder to a color
    -- I use Mail to attach a file from this folder via the Attach window
    When I return to the folder after sending my Mail message, icon size and background color have been reset to default.
    In Lion, the Always Show in Icon View option was also reset.
    So far this hasn't happened in Mountain Lion.
    Anyone else haveing this problem?

    I tried and don't see any issues. When you say the "Attach" window, what does that mean? Do you mean the "Share" contextual submenu or button (or does it translate to "attach" from another localization)?
    If it is something other than Share submenu, then is that a third-party program that provides that function?
    You might consider deleting the .DS_Store file from that folder. Various utilities can remove them, like OnyX, or you can use the Terminal.

  • Preventing Custom / Preview icons

    Hello
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.7 and want the Operating System to leave my icons alone. For example, I prefer my PDF documents to have the generic Adobe PDF icon instead of a custom icon indicative of what's in the document. Likewise with my other document types!
    I want to do this for two reasons:
    1. My computer would start up a lot quicker if it didn't spend all that time converting icons to their custom "preview" icons.
    2. It would be easier to quickly identify at a glance what type of documents I'm looking at.
    I thought there was a setting somewhere in preferences, but can't seem to find it.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Hi Joe,
    That setting is configured on a per-folder basis. With said folder open in its own window, bring up the 'View Options' from the 'View' menu and uncheck "Show icon preview" box. Should you want this to be your default setting, click on the "Use as defaults" button.

  • Custom Folder Icons

    Alright, 8330 Curve with Sprint, running 4.5
    When I upgraded from 4.2, I wanted to get rid of the Voice Activated Dialing feature, as well as several other carrier-specific features that I didn't want to take up space.....so I went in and removed the associated files, using a tutorial widely available.  I did know when doing this, that I would lose the ability to create custom colored folder icons.  No biggie.
    Especially no big deal, when I used the standard Sprint theme, which has some very nice looking folders for IM/Social Networks/Entertainment.
    However, I recently changed themes just to the simple BB L theme, and of course, lost all of those icons.  I found a post taken from another page, which gave a tutorial, using BBFileScout to load custom folder icons into the BlackBerry.  However, I have a small problem.  I don't have a subdirectory for "Folders" where it should be - presumably due to the removal of the VAD.
    Any suggestions?

    I don't think there is as the custom icon information is stored as a separate fork, which SMB has no knowledge of.
    A couple of possiblities are:
    1) Enabling SFM (Microsoft Services for Macintosh) on the windows server. You can have the share mapped via SMB and AFP.
    2) On the server use ExtremeZ-IP http://www.grouplogic.com/products/extreme/overview.cfm
    3) Maybe on the clients use DAVE http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html
    I would recommend downloading the following Webcast, the first half gives a good overview of Mac's in a Windows environment:
