Lion + Macbook Pro 17 + Time Machine = Freeze

I recently upgraded to OS X Lion on my mid-2009 MBP 17" and I am also getting complete system lockups - the mouse moves, but no keyboard, no clicks, no window movements, and all menu bar items stop updating, including the system clock.  Power cycle is the only solution.  This is happening often while a Time Machine update is running on my external drive (after it's been running for several minutes).  I believe it has also occured with video playback (as others have reported), but not often.  I'm not sure if it is related to waking from hibernate/sleep; e.g., last night's big 60GB Time Machine backup ran ok (took several hours), but this morning, after waking the machine and working for a while, it kicked off again and froze at the 90MB mark (of 270MB) right after I clicked on the menu bar icon to view progress.  I had an xterm window and Firefox open, plus a few utilties like Adium.  No video playing anywhere.
Any others?
Other notes:  8GB ram; no "Automatic Graphics Switching" option on Preferences pane, probably b/c this is a 2009 MBP(?).

I see nobody is reacting to your problem.
I have (almost) the same problem, but with 10.7.5.
Not only Time Machine freezes up (over WiFi and USB-connected), but also my Music downloads (everything else works fine) to my iPhone 5 (with  iTunes 11.1) and also Spotlight (indexing for minutes and then freezes).
All these 3 actions (which usually take longer than anything else) freeze up after 3 to 15 minutes. Never the same, always different durations. Very annoying.
On the other hand: ever since I disabled Spotlight, my MacBook Pro A1286 is as fast as when I bought it in 2009.
This all happened suddenly, out of the blue. No added software, hardware. No changes in prefs.
I had my hardware checked. I have done a memtest. All the tricks in the book. To no avail.
Aopple techs tell me to wait till Maverick......some solution ;-)

  • Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.
    Thanks,
    brokenboy

    You can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts.

  • 17" 2008 Macbook Pro to 15" 2011 Macbook Pro - Time Machine

This might be a poor question, so forgive me. I was using a 17" Macbook Pro from 2008 and just bought a new 15" macbook. I transferred everything from Time Machine on its start-up. It feels as if everything is a bit choppier so my question is: is everything pulled from the old 17" macbook pro optimized for 17" rather than 15"?
    Thanks a bunch

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Do you mean you used +Setup Assistant+ when it first started up and asked if you want to transfer your stuff? If so, that's the best way.

No. If you used +Setup Assistant,+ you're using the version of OSX that came on your new Mac.
How full is your disk? Does the new Mac have a faster processor than the old one? More memory?

  • Macbook Pro: Time Machine to Buffallo Link Station

I've recently switched to using a Macbook - and had already been using a Buffallo LS for back ups with my old PC.
I'd like to use the Time Machine Software with the Buffallo LS, however when I open the app it doesn't give me the LS as an option.
I can see the LS however in finder and access files (via wireless) from there.
Any tips for how to set this up would be a real help - eg. do I need to install NASNavigator on the Mac first?
(I know there were some posts about this some time back but at that point apparently it wasn't possible)

Thanks for the link to that - worked well - although didn't come across anywhere where I needed to input the information in section 5.
I continued with the set up and Time Machine started working - only thing is I've got about 80 gig to get onto the NAS so its going to take some time if I do it via wireless.
Also, for some reason I can now see my Linkstation twice on Finder (once as guest, where it sees only the shared directory, and once as my own login where it sees all directories on the LS through the normal wireless)
Final question - does anyone know if Auto mode on Buffalo Link works with Macbook Pro's on wireless - so that it activates/deactivates with the Mac.

  • New unibody macbook pro time machine backup stalling/stalls

I have been using time machine to back up my Macbook Pro 17 (First Gen), I have 2 external Western Digital Drives connected via USB in a RAID (Striped) Configuration. Everything has worked fine for months and the backups are quite snappy...
I just changed to a NEW Unibody Macbook Pro 17 and formatted the drives, set up the RAID configuration again from fresh in disk utility and reset Time Machine and said OK when it requested to use the drive for backups.
The process gets some way into backing up... sometimes 7GB, 13GB, 17GB even 70GB and then just stops. The hard drives(at least one of them anyway i cant tell exactly) spin down and the file count in Time Machine window just stops. There is no error message and the window just stays there saying its backing up but there is no external HD activity. I have to cancel the backup (which sometimes - but not always - causes everything to stall until i unplug the drives by whipping the USB cable out). Everything then works fine i dont need to restart and it just brings up an error message saying that Time Machine failed to backup...
    Any ideas??
I do have antivirus software installed (VirusScan) but i have had that on my previous machine aswell so it cant be that...

I have a MacBook C2Duo (black 2008) customer who has upgraded to 10.5.7 with a new internal and external hard disk and a fresh install of the OS. After doing this, Time Machine constantly stalled at 12.55 GB when backing up to an external disk (USB2). After a lot of reading on the net, I think the problem marks the re-emergence of an old bug where the mdworker task used by Spotlight to index drives is crashing and starting to take up to 99% of the CPUs. At this point, TM simply does not have enough CPU time to work and crawls almost to a halt.
I messed around for a while with Activity Monitor watching the mdworker crash and it is very predictable. Time Machine buddy does not pick it up because of course TM is still working albeit at a snail's pace.
Since mdworker is very associated with Spotlight, I tried setting Spotlight to not index any folders—same problem.
Finally, I set the TM destination drive to be a Private drive in the Spotlight Preferences and it finished without an mdworker crash.
It might be a temporary workaround or it might be coincidence that TM worked this time, so YMMV and Apple should look at this too.

  • MacBook Pro + Time Machine Restore: Extremely disappointed!

I will keep this very brief, but I am extremely disappointed with Time Machine right now.
Don't get me wrong, it works great for when you just need a file or two that you accidentally deleted yesterday, but when you need to restore your whole system from it, FORGET IT. You might as well START OVER.
So long story short, an app called HamachiX was giving me some issues, so I deiced to reinstall it. When I did that, it created a duplicate entry of my MacBook on the network. So I needed to revert back to before I uninstalled it, somehow deactivate the computer, THEN uninstall it, and then reinstall it. - I had this same issue on a PC and that was the ONLY way to fix it. BTW - everyone STAY AWAY FROM HAMACHI, or in fact ANYTHING LogMeIn makes.....there Mac support is pathetic, and there support is even worse.
ANYWAYS, So I thought ok, its 5pm. an hour ago at 4pm, TimeMachine did its thing before I got myself into this mess, so I'll just boot from my Snow Leopard Disk, restore from my TimeMachine backup and now i'll be back to how it was just an hour ago becre I started any of this.
So I proceed to do the restore. 4 hours later, it finishes. Ridiculous. I boot up and the first thing I notice....lag. Everything is SLOW. And, then I start noticing problems. For example, my desktop icons have been randomly sorted all over the place and are not in the layout I had. I then open some finder windows to find that all of the custom "view" settings have been reset. Everything is in list view. I have to switch every window I open back to icon view, and even then they are sorted by name instead of date or something like that.
I thought, no big deal I can fool with that later. So then I start opening apps only to find that some aren't working. I'm getting "invalid license" messages, etc.
    What has gone wrong????
At this point everything is so "messed" up that I don't know what to do. Restore to my backup - no wait, THATS WHAT GOT ME IN THIS MESS! Do a fresh install of OSX - I'd love to, but its going to take sooooo long to reinstall and CONFIGURE my apps. Even things like Firefox. Getting all my addons set the way I had them, getting my bookmarks the way I had them, etc.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!
Someone please offer some ideas or explanations about this situation.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, not solved, but I know I will never be using TimeMachine to do a full system restore.
I will only be using it to pull single files from within OSX.

  • New MacBook Pro Time Machine Data

    Hi guys,
I just got a new MacBook Pro and I want to transfer stuff from my old MBP, but not all of it. I only want to transfer over my emails (Mac Mail), documents, photos and music. Nothing else. No applications or anything. Is there any specific way of doing that? Can't really find a way. Thanks for your help!

two options,  hard drive or migration assistant
    Migration Assistant
After your Mac is up and running, with at least one user account, you can use the similar Migration Assistant app to transfer those same categories, with the same restrictions.  This is mainly used to move an account from one Mac (or it’s backups) to another Mac that’s already set up.  (Accounts transferred this way may have problems, especially permissions problems with files already on other drives, including backups.)
If you have any user accounts on the new Mac with the same name as any you want from the old Mac, there's a conflict.  See the pink box in the Using Migration Assistant page below.
Note that user accounts transferred via Migration Assistant may lose permission to see and restore from files on other volumes, including backups.
But if you're already got data you need to keep in any of those other accounts, see Transferring files from one User Account to another.
For details and instructions, see the appropriate page:

  • MacBook Pro & time machine

I was running a time machine back up and did a couple other things, now the machine is totally frozen, complete with the beach ball of death. Can I do a hard reboot and not lose my entire hard drive?
    Thanks!

    Abyss Images:
I need to have all my data, photos, videos and applications "transferred" to my new laptop but won't have the old one anymore since it will be gone with the new owner.
I concur with DaddyPaycheck. Clone your entire volume on your old computer to an external firewire HDD, and you can then clone it to your new one. If you don't have an external firewire HDD, I believe you data deserve at least one. Many of us maintain multiple backups. I have SD clone on two separate external firewire HDDs, and one of those drives also accommodates my Time Machine backup.
Once you have your new machine, boot from the clone on your external firewire HDD, format the internal HDD, if necessary, and clone your entire volume on the external firewire HDD to the new computer. Alternatively, if it comes with an OS installed, you can move only the data and apps you need. Kappy's schedule in A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs works fine, or you can try using Transferring data with Setup Assistant/Migration Assistant, although some folk have had difficulties with that.

  • I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing.  I first noticed that the track pad would not work for short periods of time.  Is anyone else having a problem?

My MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing up.  It seems that it is happening more often as time goes on.
I first noticed that the track pad would freeze then whole computer would completly freeze.
    Most annoying.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?

    Hey B-bram,
For issues with video resolution not being consistent, I would start with resetting the NVRAM on your MacBook Pro. That will reset the resolution to its default as well as resetting other default settings like sound volume and start up volume. Take a look at the article below for more information about that and how to perform the NVRAM reset.

  • I want to re-install my Pre-Installed Lion Macbook Pro, but I can't get the Lion OS from App Store with my Apple ID. Please help, thanks!

Hi, I want to do a clean re-installation of my end 2011 Macbook Pro which comes with pre-installed Lion OS. I go through the installation steps and after App Store verified my Apple ID, it prompted me that I did not purchase the Lion OS. I am very surprise to see this message which my pre-installed Lion Macbook Pro should have it. Please help and advise how can I get the OS? All other bundle softwares were in the purchase record except the Lion OS.

That was my mistake - sorry - it IS Command-R to boot to the Recovery disk, not Command-D: I either just hit the wrong key or am just now coming awake from my nap.
Let me see if I can just explain it in a few steps - I don't know of any link (but it would make a good User Tip):
Create an up-to-the minute back-up of your internal hard drive using an external hard drive and Time Machine.
Boot to your recovery partion - holding down Command-R on boot.
Use Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD - use one GUID partition and format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Unless you're selling the machine, there's no need to do a secure erase (which can take hours).
After you erase the disk, re-install Lion from the same Recovery partition.
After installation is complete, reboot, again holding down the Command-R keys to boot into the Recovery Partition.
Restore your Time Machine back-up. This could take several hours.
Reboot after restore and you're back in business.
That should take care of everything - all you need is an Internet connection.
Call back if I didn't explain things too well - at least I got the Command-R right this time!

  • What is causing my macbook pro to hard freeze?

My 2011 15" MacBook Pro started hard freezing recently a couple months ago. The screen goes black and the computer seems to be stuck on a loop. If music is playing, it will repeat the same second of music over and over until I hold the power button. Sometimes I can even hear the sounds from inside the computer (the sounds of the hard drive spinning?) repeat at the same frequency.
It was rare at first but became much more frequent (once a day) and I finally decided that maybe an update from Leopard to Lion would help. So I updated but the problem is still getting worse. It is now freezing a few times a day, sometimes only minutes after starting back up following a freeze.
It does seem to be linked to activity, that is, the more I'm doing, the more likely it is to freeze. But I can skype for hours and hours with no problems even though the fans are running high and the computer seems to be working hard, and then try to preview a pdf on my desktop and it freezes.
If the update to Lion didn't help at all, what else can I do? Could this be a hardware problem?

Ok, so I looked through the system.log and couldn't see any obvious error messages but here's everything that happened after I woke my computer from Sleep and before the crash:

As for the System Diagnostic Reports, there are tons of them (mostly .panic, 2 .hang and 1 .crash). Most of them start with "Kernel," one Firefox and one Thunderbird.
    Anyway, the most recent (Kernel_....panic):

  • Time Machine freezes during back up to Passport Ext drive

Time Machine freezes during first back up to My Passport Ext drive. It is a 1TB, and seems to keep stopping at 6 to 10GB stage so never actually backs up. I have excluded files to limit first backup to about 40GB.

you sure this is a Mac Pro and not a MacBook Pro first. Most every report  of issues with bus powered like Passport are best solved using a drive case with its own power instead.

  • Time machine freezes during back-up.

Time machine freezes during back-up. Have to unplug HD before I can regain controll over Time Machine In System Preferences. Tried loading folders the old fachion way—sometimes freezes during that also.
At first I thought I had a bad exteral HD, but I am on my fourth and still the same problem. My first Time Machine HD (THAT WORKED) now has the same problem.
I have been working with someone with apple support for weeks. We just replaced the interal HD, and still have the same problem. My iMac is only five months old
    Any ideas ? ? ? .

  • My Macbook Pro Retina keeps freezing on up...

My Macbook Pro Retina will freeze on start up just about 1 out of every 3 cold boots and it's been happening for a while now.  It will start up to the log in screen and after I type in my pw and log in it will freeze with a black screen.  I'll close the lid and the display stays on and I have to hard reset it for it to work again.  Has this been happening to anyone else or do I maybe have a faulty macbook?  Any ideas?

    Hi,
I have exactly the same symptoms on my MacBook Pro Retina. It freezes with a black screen right after login, half the time. I have to hard reboot... sometimes the second boot gives the same result, and at the third boot it's ok.
I've installed gfxCardStatus to check if it's an issue related to the graphic card switch, but this hasn't given me any clues.
Sometimes my session opens normally (no freeze), but the system becomes really instable when I launch an app which makes use of the Nvidia graphic card. For example, Adobe Illustrator. In that case, Illustrator freezes and the system is slowly becoming unresponsive, even after a force kill af that application.
It's really annoying, I can't work on that machine... it's like the Nvidia graphic card is half dead.
I hope it's a software issue, not hardware.
If we could have an official answer from Apple, that would be great!
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.
    Any suggestions?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Kind regards

I did a clean install of mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and still it freezes at arbitary points. The very first time when it booted up it worked for longer and when I started to apply updates from app store, it froze. Successive boots froze much early, like within few seconds of booting.
I am going to check this by booting in safe mode.  I am losing hope with mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and will switch back to snow leopard (10.6.8) which was working seemless.
I checked so many things, based on other posts to make sure if my MBP is really Mid 2007. IT IS.
    Rgds,
    Raj.
