Lion mail behaving badly

Hi all,
I just got my wife a a Core i3, 3.06Ghz 21.5" iMac. I bumped it to 8MB of RAM as she never remembes to quit anything. I updated he to Lion after using it for a week and finding no problems on my machine. As of late Mail has started to behave very strangely. After responding to one or two e-mails without problem in the next e-mail she responds to the charachtersshe's typing apper on screen with more and more of a lag until she can be three or four lines ahead of the on screen text. The problem doesn't happen all the time and she can't, so far come up with a definite way of replicating it consistantly. The responses that have this problem also can be very slow to send, with the general "rainbow" spinning system cursor and not the gray spinning "working" icon spinning next to the mailbox, that you usually get when the ISP is being slow. This again is not consistant. I could not replicate either problem when I tried it. She has probably 30 smart mailboxes that she uses for student mail in her various teaching jobs, is using the "classic" setup. She is composing in "Rich Text" with the spell as I type feature turned on, is using Helvetica as the font but has changed to Times to eleiminate any weird font corruption problems. She never had a problem in 10.6 on her old iMac or on this one. She also ran mail on 10.7 for a week or so with no noticible problem.
Any ideas where to even start? I'm not familiar with Mails preference files and can't delete anything that will mess with her smart mailboxes, as losing them would be a disaster for her. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Some things to consider.
Create another admin account and see if the same thing happens in that user account.  If not, then you have a problem in the primary user account.
I am assuming you zapped PRAM and did an SMC reset, plus unplugged all periphals for awhile.
If the machine recently started acting this way, look at recent installs.  If it has acted like this since you installed 10.7.2 you might reinstall using the combo update or install the 10.7.3 combo update.
You can also reinstall Lion and not lose your data.

  • Lion Finder Behaving Badly

My wife has a 27' iMac w. 10.7.2, 2.8 GHz Core i7, 8 GB Ram. She runs the iMac as Admin.
Finder preferences don't stick She does not want to see "All My Files" or "Air Drop" in the Sidebar. She changes the preferences, but those items keep reappearing.
She does want to see Macintosh HD in the Sidebar, so she sets preferences to show all HD's. It keeps reverting to a minus sign (partial), with Macintosh HD disappearing.
Occasionally neither of the above applies because the side bar appears completely blank.
Very frequently, clicking on a directory fails to reveal its contents, just a blank Finder window. Force relaunching the Finder fixes that, but usually causes AirDrop and All My File to reappear if they were hidden, and causes Macintosh HD to disappear if it was showing.
The Mobile Me Sync icon is still at the right-hand side of the menu bar. She logged out and deleted the MobileMe Pref Pane (why didn't Apple do that automatically when MobileMe syncing went away?). /System/Library, /Library, and Users/heraccount/Library contain a lot of MobileMe files. Are they necessary? How does she get rid of the sync icon?
Items disappear from Login Items. Camouflage, e.g.
iCal crashes regularly on launch then runs OK on re-launch. For a period of about two weeks it crashed every time she launched it, no exceptions.
We've done FSCK, trashed such plists, as we could find, but nothing helps.
Advice most welcome. We live not far from an Apple Store, but I am absolutely convinced that after lugging the iMac to the Genius Bar not one of the problem I have described would manifest itself, and they would think I took it in simply because I enjoy carrying a 27" iMac around the mall.

  • Mail behaving badly

    Hi all,
my mail account will not recieve mail but can send, when I hook up my old windows computer with the same mail settings the mail comes thru to that computer.
the mail has been working fine on the Mac but not now, I tried to send a large file it may be the cause ,who knows?
I have reinstalled 10.5 to no avail.
Can anyone help (I'm not too techi so go easy.
    Many thanks,
    John
(i have looked at past questions on this and implemented some of the solutions)

    Hi John,
Firstly, 'Repair Permissions' using Disk Utility, and restart.
    Rebuild your mailbox - Menu/Mailbox/Rebuild.
Are you using Synchronization in System Preferences/MobileMe? If so, try turning it off. Also check that your computer appears under the 'Advanced...' button.
If all else fails, then move the 'Mail' folder in ~/Library/Mail to your Desktop (do NOT delete it at this stage). Also, move 'com.apple.mail.plist' from ~/Library/Preferences/ to your Desktop. You will need to setup your mailbox again when you open Mail - follow the default setup procedure and setup your mailbox as an IMAP account - it will synchronize/download the emails you have stored on the server if you have been saving your data there.
Test Mail and if it is OK, then you can import whatever data you have in the old Mail folder on your Desktop - Menu/File/Import Mailboxes/Mail for Mac OS X and navigate to the Mail folder on the Desktop, follow onscreen instructions.

  • How to disable detection of duplicate messages in Lion Mail?

When Mail in Lion detects duplicate messages in a mailbox, it groups them together and shows the link in the header "x Duplicates", where x is the number of duplicate messages found. When that link is clicked the duplicate messages show in the mailbox separately. But I'd like Mail to stop grouping them together to begin with.
    Running OS X 10.7.3 and Mail 5.1

To disable automatic grouping of duplicate messages, quit Mail then run this command in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates -bool true
To revert to the default setting, run this command:
defaults write com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates -bool false
or simply delete the setting altogether with this command:
         defaults delete com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates
If you want to see how Mail behaves with this setting enabled, but without modifying your preference file, start Mail from Terminal with this command:
         /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail -AlwaysShowDuplicates YES
I learned of Mail's modifiability (is that a word?) from here:
         http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2004101603285984
    and here:
         http://erikslab.com/2007/07/16/os-x-mailapp-logging/
I found the AlwaysShowDuplicates option by looking for interesting words similar to 'duplicates' in the Mail executable like this:
              strings /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail | grep -i duplicat

  • Mouse/cursor behaving badly

Seems to have started recently, maybe with OS software update? My mouse is behaving badly as in it can't seem to capture open Mail windows to rearrange them on my screen - often takes 3 or 4 attemtps to "catch" the window. Also, can't rearrange stacked layers in palettes in Adobe CS4 programs, keeps wanting to bring up dialog boxes for layers instead. Have changed batteries in mouse (Logitech optical wireless) and changed mouse preferences, but seems to be getting worse. Any ideas? Could mouse be getting old? Have had it for quite a few years. Am working on a Mac 2x2.4GHzQuad-CoreIntelXeon, Mac OS 10.6.8.

Bluetooth is turned off. The 'wireless' is a direct wireless and not through the Airport. When I turn Airport on, there are three other networks visible but they are all locked.
But, given your suggestion about the mouse, I just tried the mouse on my laptop - AND IT'S THE MOUSE!! Same behaviour repeated on the laptop...
Thanks. Time to go get a new mouse and lay this one to rest.

  • Lion Mail unable to find "excerpts"/"character subsets" of email addresses (worked in 10.6)

    Hi,
I recently started using Lion and feel that Mail search has been downgraded.  In Snow Leopard, I could search for an "excerpt"/"character subset" of an email address, but this does not work in Lion, and when I called Apple Care about this issue, they confirmed this is proper operation of Lion Mail search and didn't seem to think this was an issue of concern.
For example, I have an account with First Arkansas Bank & Trust.  I've received email from FABT from four different email addresses:
First Arkansas Bank and Trust <[email protected]>
    FIRST ARKANSAS BANK & TRUST <[email protected]>
First Arkansas Bank and Trust <[email protected]>
    Account Services <[email protected]>
In Snow Leopard, I could search for "Arkansas" and limit to "From" field, and all emails from FABT would show up.  Now in Lion Mail, when I type "Arkansas" in the search field, Mail automatically searches all of my email content, so I get all my FABT emails but also emails from United Airlines talking about fares to a city in Arkansas and so on.  I am then given the option of limiting my search to "First Arkansas Bank and Trust <[email protected]>" or "FIRST ARKANSAS BANK & TRUST <[email protected]>" but not "First Arkansas Bank and Trust <[email protected]>" or  "Account Services <[email protected]>."  If I do a search for "from:arkansas," I get results for all but "Account Services <[email protected]>."  I can only retrieve that email address by searching for "from:aservices" or "from:first" because they appear at the beginning of the email address.  Apple Care tech support confirmed that Lion Mail cannot search for an "excerpt"/"character subset" of an email address like "arkansas" in the case of [email protected].  Is it also like this in Mountain Lion?  Is there any way to request that Apple improve its search functionality?
Snow Leopard Mail search had no problem searching for subset character strings.  e.g. doing a search for "rkans" (including full text search) brings up zero emails in Lion, whereas it worked perfectly fine in Snow Leopard.  I'm also not pleased with the loss of the scroll bar arrow buttons in Lion... :/
thanks for any advice you may have

Thanks for your reply!  To what extent does Apple listen to such feedback?
I am sure they will read it, but it's impossible to know whether they will take action.  I would guess that having a large number of people ask for something increases the chances.
For questions relating to how Mountain Lion behaves you should ask in its forum:

  • Lion Mail: Mailboxes won't stay in the order I want.

Lion Mail: I drag my mailboxes to reorder them, which works. However, when I quit and relaunch Mail, the mailboxes revert to the original order. And it's not alphabetical; nor is it the order of the accounts preference window.
Also, the order in the Inbox does not match the order in the lower section of the sidebar. (My iCloud account is first in the Inbox, but last in the sidebar.)

    Hi.
The problem probably was in incorrect entry in prefs.js.
I had the same issue and that was in my config:
    user_pref("browser.search.useDBForOrder", '''"true"'''); -bad
    user_pref("browser.search.useDBForOrder", '''true'''); - good
The wrong value set search engines always in alphabetical order.
Some plugin responsible for context searching, has change this entry to wrong value.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion, Mail, Safari and Note need about five minutes to start.
After starting, Mail answers are very very slow. The same for Note. Instead of, sending mails is only a bit slower than before upgrading.
In Safari, I choose Goggle as starting page in Preferences, but at every restart misses that starting page and the search strip says "Seek Google or instert an address".

Well, I found the solution here in another thread.
i just want to mention that the samw thing was happening also for the notes and the reminders apps!! (they quit unexpectedly!!).

  • How do I stop Mountain Lion Mail from downloading emails?

I create html newsletter emails for a church organization using a combination of Dreamweaver, Safari and Apple Mail.  Since I moved to Mountain Lion, however, I have an Apple Mail problem.
Our organization uses an AOL email address.  Under Lion and previous OS's, I was able to create the organization's account in Apple Mail, unclick "Include when automatically checking for new messages" in Mail Preferences, click "Enable this account" in Mail Preferences, and be able to send the finished email without routinely downloading all the emails from the organization's AOL inbox.  Although I've followed this same procedure in Mountain Lion Mail, the app still insists on downloading their emails!!  Is there any other switch to shut it off?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have several email accounts in Mail.  'Sorry, I didn't indicate this before.  Prior to Mountain Lion, I was able to set Mail to automatically download email for all accounts except the organization's. Although the "Include when automatically..." checkbox in the organization's specific account preferences seems to provide this control in ML ... it doesn't

  • How to change To address in Lion Mail message list pane

I quite like the new Lion Mail app although I return to "Classic Layout" whenever I need to sort and clean up my inbox, but for general use the two-column layout with the message list on the left and the selected message content on the right works nicely for me. I would however like very much to change the "To" line in the message list. Currently my list of received messages shows "To" on the first line to the right of a picture of the "To" person. On the far right of this line is the time or date of receipt in blue. Under this first line is a little icon with "To" or "Cc" - sometimes, and that is followed by the subject. On the right of this second line is the mailbox and account. I have set preview to no lines to keep the list as compact as possible.
What I would dearly like to change is the To address in the first line. I know who the To is - it's Me! Occasionally the To shows another name if that person precedes my name in the list of recipients. What would be VERY useful is if this data showed the From address!
In the Classic View I can move the email columns around, adding new columns and removing them. Either way, in my inbox I can have the From address right in front of me. Is there any way of changing the To address to the Originator address - the From address - in the message list in Lion mail?
    Thanks - Lawrence

Thanks, but that controls the header detail shown for the message in the right pane. So if I select a message in the message list on the left pane, the method you describe controls what header detail I see in the right pane when the selected message is displayed. The piece of data I really want to change is the first line of the message information contained in the message list in the left pane. It currently shows the To address in this window, which is useless to me; the From address on that first line - next to a picture from my address book of whoever is sending the message - would be infinitely more useful.

  • How to not "read" Junk Messages In Lion Mail?

In the new setup in Lion Mail, the left column now has the subject line and first couple lines of the message.
To create any kind of action with the message, I have to select it.  It then appears on the right and is seen as opened mail.
For most messages, this is okay, but for junk mailing (foreign entitities wanting money etc.), I don't want to open it but I do want to delete it.
Does anyone know how I can delete without "selecting" the message and automatically opening it or do I just have to use the alternate older view of Mail that is provided?

I second this... Some emails I don't want to see at all. (i.e. Prince SoNSo has left me a gazillion dollars, all I have to do is reply...) Is there and edit button in the new mail as similar to the one used on portables?

  • How to save multiple attachments in Lion Mail?

In Snow Leopard Mail, I can save multiple attachments to my Downloads folder with one click. In Lion Mail, I see no way to save attachments except by right-clicking on them one at a time. I must be missing something. Information appreciated.

I believe you are missing something. I'm not on my Mac right now but there should be a setting where to save attachments and also muiltiples at one time.

  • For all like me who have been fooled by rss disapearing in Mountain Lion Mail

I have read lots of threads regarding the discontinued support of RSS feeds in Mountain Lion Mail, but unfortunately, after I have installed Moutain Lion (I am really angry with Apple not to have communicate on this point and to have discover it at the end of the install!).
So, after reading a lot on the subject, here's what I have made to get back everything I needed.
First, I wanted to get all my saved articles back. For this I have gone in ~Library>Mail>V2>RSS> (you have to show hidden files) Here you have the list of your old rss mailboxes. Select the ones you want to restore and drop them into a folder that's not hidden (in a folder on your desktop for example) because you won't be able to see this folder in the file selection window in the next step.
    Then go to Mail->File->Import mailboxes
Select "Apple Mail". Then go to the folder previously created and select all the .mbox files you moved in.
Now you will have a new mail box with all imported subfolders and alle your saved articles. You can then rearrange them as you like.
Now, to renew your feeds subscriptions, you have no other choice than to use another rss app. And to find all your feeds links, go to ~Library>Mail>V2>RSS> or the folder previously created and in each .mbox open the info.plist file. In each file look for the string in front of "RSSFeedURLString", double click on it and copy and paste it in your new rss reader.
It's not a clean solution, it's quite long (mainly for the import of rss feeds in the new reader), it forces to have old saved articles in mail and new ones in the new app, but that's the only solution I have found.
If anyone has a better one, I think lots of us will appreciate.
PS: please accept my apologies if everything is not clear, as English is not my mother tongue

    Harry Heck wrote:
Can anyone recommend a good RSS reader? One I can use on my Mac and iPad?
I wrote one to integrate with Mountain Lion's notifications. The iPad version is not yet available. You can download it from: http://www.etresoft.com/etrefeed
Disclaimer: I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my link.
I just noticed I have to run spell check when leaving a post here. The old Safari would automatically redline misspelled words.
Seems that they are taking many things away when we upgrade- don't understand.
That is a function of the forum software. Safari 6 has nothing to do with it.

  • In Mountain Lion, Mail why no "view as icon" option

I used to be able to compose a message, attach a PDF and right click to "view as icon." Now when I attach, I see a preview of the doc. When I save as a draft, the PDFs appear as icons. When a PC user receives them, will they arrive as PDF attachments icons only showing or will it show a preview of the doc in their opening window?

In Mountain Lion mail, it is still possible to switch between a preview and an icon of an attachment.
How somebody else is seeing it when he/she is receiving it it totally up to their mail app. It has nothing to do with PC or Mac or whatever system they use.
So you have basically no real chance to control what the receipient will see when looking at your mail.

  • Yahoo! Mail glitches with Lion mail client and Address Book app

I had really been looking forward to using my Yahoo! mail account in the Lion mail client but now that it is here and I have set it up and used it for a few days I am noticing the following issues:
New mail is not always received or is received late. Yahoo! Webmail portal shows new items but these sometimes do not appear in Lion mail client even after a manual 'get mail' check.
Mail marked as read in Yahoo! Webmail portal or in mail clients in iOS devices such as iPhone or iPad is not marked as read in Lion mail client, however the reverse does work (i.e. mail marked as read in Lion mail client does mark the message as read in webmail and in clients on iOS devices).
Yahoo! Aliases are not supported. Yes, you can add aliases by inserting the other email addresses in the 'Email Address' field of the account settings, but you cannot add more than one display name.
I have also found that if you turn on Yahoo! contacts via the tick-box in the new 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' pref pane in System Preferences that I end up with random duplicated contacts. These duplicates are not seen on iOS devices, just in the Address Book app. If you delete a duplicate contact, it deletes the contact altogether. However, I have found that if you keep contacts unticked in the pref pane and add your Yahoo! account the old-fashioned way (i.e. via the Address Book app's own preferences) then the contacts sync through perfectly with no duplications.
I would be interested to know if anybody else is experiencing these issues. It may be worth noting that mine is not a @yahoo.com address but @xtra.co.nz which belongs to my ISP here in New Zealand, but the mail is managed by Yahoo!. The account works perfectly as a Yahoo! account on iOS devices and does appear to be working in Lion, except for these small glitches but I don't imagine these are specific to @xtra.co.nz addresses.
    Thanks
    Steve

i've had the same experience here.
essentially it seems like lion mail.app just takes an incredibly long time to pickup new changes from the IMAP server at yahoo.
ios and webmail are obviously much quicker.
if it is working on ios, why does is it so delayed in mail?
    any solutions out there?
