Lion Mail hangs, cannot be started after first MacBook shut down...

After installing Lion, Mail worked fine... Once, I shut down the computer, I have not been able to restart Mail in multiple attempts. Time and again, Mail is not responding and hangs consistently (see report below)... A Mail patch by Apple Computer is urgently needed!

By the way, the first step that I refer to should not be double click but right click:
1. Right click the Finder Folder in the Dock (and a popup menu will appear)
Hope this works for you as it did for me!
Recommended not by me but successfully used by me, here are the steps again...
1. Right click on Finder icon in the Dock
2. Choose "Go to Folder" in the popup menu
3. Type in ~Library
4. Open the Mail folder(s) until you find the V2 folder
5. As opposed to what was recommended, I deleted all files and folders inside the V2 folder
(After all, gmail and iMobile have my mail history and details on file anyway)
6. Restarted MacBook to be sure
7. Started Mail and added my iMobile and gmail accounts... From there the normal world presented itself!
Please, note below a more simpler solution suggested elsehwere (that I did not test myself)...
1. Open Applications in a Finder window and scroll to Mail
2. Right click on Mail then go to "Get Info" in the popup window
3. Unlock the lock at the bottom of the window by clicking on it (it will ask you for your password)
4. Go to "Access" and change it from "custom" to "read and write"
5. Restart Mail and it should work

  • How to stop maintenance tasks starting after mac is shut down?

Even when my iMac is shut down, it starts up in the early morning to perform maintenance tasks, then sleeps. When I have a guest staying in the room with the iMac it wakes them up so I would like to stop it (other than uplugging the power).
The startup initiation message is like the following:
    22/12/2013 5:55:12.000 am bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1387662912 0
Is there a way to inhibit this background maintenance operation so that it does not occur when the mac is shut down?
PS It also did this under 10.7 and 10.8 so is not actually a problem specific to Mavericks.

    Thanks for the responses.
    1. The iMac is actually shut down.
    2. There is no wake or startup set in the Energy Saver Schedule.
I've been using Macs since 1985 so I know my way around them pretty well, but I can't figure out this one ...

  • IMac (G1 Intel) won't start after having been shut down (for extended time)

I haven't been using 1st generation Intel iMac for about a year and after reconnecting it now it simply won't start. I have tried resetting SMC, no help. Also tried another outlet. The fans are not spinning up, nothing on the screen, no startup chime. It worked perfectly before I shut it down last tiime.
Any ideas what might be wrong, what to troubleshoot/fix?

Have you ever changed the PRAM battery - they run flat after a few years? Not sure if it would prevent booting if it were flat, but possibly.
Try leaving the Mac plugged in to a power socket for a few hours (if you haven't already) and then try again. If it does boot (bit of a long shot) get a new PRAM battery.

I think I finished installing Mountain Lion, and am at the "log in" page with the Mountain Lion icon, but I cannot do any of the functions on screen. That is, I cannot log in, sleep, restart, or shut down. I am running it on an Early 2009 Macbook Pro, which is said to have the capabilities of running Mountain Lion.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

Did you purchase the Mac new?
You have 14 calendar days from the time your items are delivered to initiate a return as noted here.
Even though you are past the 14 day limit, if it were me, I'd take the Mac back and explain what's going on. Your Mac should work out of the box.

  • MacBook Shuts Down After Unplugging Powercord Although Battery is Installed

    Hi,
Whenever I disconnect the power cord of my MacBook, the OS shuts down within 2-5 seconds. The battery is installed and it has a 80% health and it has 185 charge cycles. I've been experiencing this strange behavior after two days of installing (Secrets Preference Pane). But I'm not sure if it was behind the problem. I even uninstalled Secrets preference pane but the problem still exist.
At first I though the battery is dead, but for some reason I tried running the laptop later on the battery power and it ran for whole 2+ hours until it was fully discharged. I then charged the battery fully and used it again and it was working like a charm. But later the problem returned and the MacBook shuts down whenever it is not connected to the power cord. If the battery was dead, then how come it runs without a problem sometimes? also the health indicator shows that the battery is 80% healthy and the charging cycles is not much and whenever the system shuts down, the indicator on the bottom of the battery shows that it is fully charged.
I don't know what is causing the problem, and why sometimes the problem arises and sometimes it goes away.
I am using a 2007 white MacBook with the original battery (provided with the laptop). I am running Mac OS 10.6.2.
I tried several solutions such as:
    - Cleaning the battery and MacBook ports.
    - Resetting the PRAM.
    - Fully discharging the battery and then fully charging it.
But it seems that I am not able to resolve the problem. I would appreciate any provided help.
    Thanks,
    shaknon
Note: Here are two pictures that shows stats about the battery:

I am having identical issues as you described - although I haven't installed secrets preference pane (so I doubt that's involved).
My problem went on for hours one night, I got sick of dealing with it and went to sleep with AC adapter unplugged and macbook off. The next day, it worked fine all day long. Now here I am in the evening - had a power cut, AC adapter went off obviously, and MacBook powered off. Again now I have this problem.
I tried everything you've talked about (PRAM reset) as well as SMC reset, no change. My battery stats look great, says battery is healthy. This started happening to me a few days ago, I upgraded to 10.6 a few weeks ago.. not sure what caused this to start happening.
I found one VERY interesting thing, maybe you can check this: when I have the problem, with AC adapter unhooked, when I try to power up my MacBook it comes up for 2-5 seconds (sometimes until the apple tone, sometimes not), and turns off. If I HOLD THE POWER BUTTON for 5+ seconds the MacBook remains on, the white light on the front flashes, and I get a long tone. This procedure is supposed to be used for firmware updates or something. Anyway, when I do this, the computer comes up perfectly and it uses the battery. When I hook an AC adapter up, that works, but as soon as I unplug it I am back to the same problem. You should try this and see if it works for you, it may be a clue. If nothing else, it's a good way to still use your laptop if you are on the go and can't be dead in the water
My wife has a MacBook slightly newer than mine, I'm going to try her battery when possible to see if that solves the problem. I hesitate to go to the genius bar as they are terrible where I live and it's always been a waste of time
(Also, the battery update fails for me as well).

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion
You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010.

  • Satellite L doesn't boot up after restart or shutting down

    Hello,
My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
I need to turn off the computer and wait 10 seconds and try again, after that it start ok.
    Any suggest?
    Thanks,

To be honest I dont know if there is the problem actually. Most important thing is that your notebook starts. I dont know if this is so important if this happen after 5 or 10 seconds.
We dont know which notebook model do you have, how old it is, since when you have noticed this strange issue, so it is not easy to understand the problem.
    >My laptop after restart or shutting down doesn't starting.
It is not easy to understand this statement. Does it mean that when you click on restart or shutdown option in start menu notebook react properly but cannot restart or be switched on immediately?

  • My macbook shuts down after 5 minutes

My macbook shuts down after 5 - 10 minutes, and I have to restart it each time. Can anyone help me with this? I've tried resetting the PRAM, re-instatlling the OS, switching HDD's. I asked a friend of mine what it could be and he said it may possibly be the power switch button. Any answers out there?

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
If that doesn't do it, you are looking at a hardware repair.
    Best of luck.

  • Feezing after Restart or Shut Down commands

Perhaps this is a common problem, as I have seen it happen before, but I have a Mac G5 in my lab that, after being told to restart, or shut down, the icons disappear like normal, but it just sits there with the desktop background up. No shut down, no restart.
I can restart manually by holding down the power button, but this machine is the master image for the lab and has to be able to shut down by timer, due to our college's "green" policies. If it won;t shut down on it's own, and has to be done manually, it defeats the purpose.
I've already resatrted from the CD and ran Disk Utility to repair and verify permissions. It did find errors, and said it fixed them, but after restarting from the hard drive again, it is still freezing after given the shut down or restart commands. The cursor still moves and the desktop background are there, just no icons or dock.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi-
The power functions of the machine are controlled by the PMU/SMU.
A reset may be what is needed.
