Lion Mail Server - Rejecting Large Messages

Hi
Am running Mail on Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).
We want to limit the incoming message size to 10MB (which we can do in the Mail Server | Settings | Quotas tab) but we are needing to send customers an email to say there mail has been rejected as they currently think the mail has been delivered.
Is there anywhere we can set up and edit an email response if the incoming mail exceeds 10MB?
Any help much appricated.
Carl

Your mailserver should give an error code to the senders mailserver typically reporting an error 552 "Message size exceeds fixed limit" or something similar. This is then normally delivered to the sender inbox. However you can't customise this.
Some mailservers are better than others at doing this. Try sending yourself a too big message and see what you get.
For your benefit a list of typical error codes and descriptions for SMTP is available here http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/latest/?page=reference_error_messages_s mtp

  • Mail server rejected message: spam or virus detected (#5.3.0)

    Hi everybody,
for the first time ever I got this funny message:
mail server rejected message: spam or virus detected (#5.3.0)
This happens now with e-mails containing a pdf which I a) have already sent before and b) created on the mac. Checked with another pdf just for testing - same effect. Any other documents work fine - just those pdfs don't work anymore.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bettina

    Bettina,
There is the possibility of the MS Office and Word being infected (but not the Mac overall) with what are called micro-viri, and are cross-platform. Many AV filters will catch those. I am providing a link where some of us discussed this MS Office infection:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2782109&#2782109
Let us know what you find? See also:
    http://outlandishjosh.com/wp/index.php?p=861
which you will see in that topic linked above.
I have not confirmed the path you chose to create the PDF will transmit this virus, but this must be checked out, and is probably the source of the message you are getting.

  • OSX Lion Mail Server Junk Mail Filter blocks incoming mail from any Yahoo address

I have yet to be able to use OSX Lion Mail Server's Junk Mail Filter.  I have several contacts who use (free) Yahoo Mail addresses.  Whenever I turn on Junk Mail Filter, even at the Most Cautious setting, any incoming mail from Yahoo.com addresses do not make it into my inbox.  I was told last year by an Apple Enterprise Tech Support contact that "..we're still having problems with that Junk Mail Filter, sorry, just leave it off for now.."  WTH  In the meantime, the good news is I'm not missing any incoming e-mails; but, I'm having to sort through and delete a few hundred spam messages each day.
    Suggestions?  Thanks in advance

I agree with the points made by Strontium90. If you have any PCs then Apple's mail/contacts/calendar software is a poor choice. Kerio Connect as a mail/contacts/calendar server would not only support Macs but would also do a good job supporting PCs running Outlook.
If you are going to become a pure Apple site, then you could use just the Apple software and this would be cheaper than using Kerio. For 30 users this might be a suitable solution, however even in a pure Apple environment many people prefer Kerio. For example I find Kerio much more pleasent when dealing with email addresses across multiple domains, email aliases, email group addresses, and so on. Kerio also has built-in email archiving, that is keeping a record of all emails. Kerio also provides a web-browser client for accessing email, calendar and contacts. It is worth noting that as standard Mountain Lion Server no longer includes a webmail feature. While I personally find the Kerio webclient rather ugly it does work.
There are some annoyances I have with Kerio, firstly they have always charged a 'maintenance' fee for their software. This provided access to software updates, and in the past also provided access to Kerio technical support. Unfortunately they now only let you make two (2) support cases per year for that cost, and you now have to pay extra for any more cases. Also while they added support for EWS (Exchange Web Service) to allow using Outlook 2011 for Mac as a supported email client, they did a poor job of this so that it does not work properly with any other EWS compatible client. This means it will not work in EWS mode with Apple Mail, nor with Outlook for Windows. While there are other ways to connect these other clients, this seems a foolish move and there have been plenty of requests to fix this.
Apple's Mail client uses EWS to connect to a 'real' MS Exhange server.

  • Migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server

    Hi all,
I'm looking to migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server.  I work for a company with roughly 30 employees and they use exchange for mail, contacts and calendars.  We want to take full advantage of OSX Server and to completly get off of exchange.
What are the best ways to do this?  Are there any tools available to help this process?

  • POP server rejected password message??? What happened?

    I get this error message:
The POP server “pop-server.roadrunner.com” rejected the password for user “[email protected]
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
I just got it this evening and my mail won't accept my password. I tried to access my mail it via WWW and it won't accept my password either. What happened? It was fine this AM. My ISP is via time/warner. Any help is appreciated.

So I looked at your post again. Does adelphia.net now use “pop-server.roadrunner.com” as it's POP mail server?
On p.4 of this PDF, it says you should be using the following settings:
    Email Client Settings
    Username: {your [email protected]}
    Password: {your password}
    Incoming (POP3)
    Server: mail.adelphia.net
    Outgoing (SMTP)
    Server: mail.adelphia.net
So maybe some of your mail prefs account settings were inadvertently changed to the wrong stuff so you are now inadvertently trying to connect to the wrong server with the wrong username?
That still doesn't answer why you can't connect via webmail at https://webmail.adelphia.net/webedge , though...

  • Server rejecting outgoing message

    All,
I have no idea why my mail server has started reacting the way that it has, but this is the situation. I am running a 3.6 Messaging server on Solaris 2.6. After a reboot recently, the server started rejecting certain outgoing emails that it claims to have bad return addresses. I am not sure what this error means and I cannot see a return address in the mail header. The error returned to the user is below:
This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:
Your message was not delivered because the return address was refused.
The return address was '<[email protected]>'
    Please reply to [email protected]
if you feel this message to be in error.
If anyone has any input, advice, or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your help. The rejected emails seem to be going to the same 'set' of domains, but I cant find any details in the logs or error messages to point me in the right direction. Thanks,
    Pete

If you go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and select the offending account, is it's own outgoing mail server selected? If not, select it and put a check in use only this server. I would also confirm all settings against:

  • Mail: outgoing and now incoming mail server rejects password

Hello all. Hope you can help with this one.
I was using Mail as normal yesterday. I use the same incoming mail server and SMTP server (my university's Exchange server). Then sending mail suddenly failed. The error message I get is:
The SMTP server “exch.wlv.ac.uk” rejected the password for user “(null)”
Enter your password again or cancel.
The settings are port 995 for outgoing mail, using SSL and requiring password authentication.
I've verified my settings and passwords with IT support. They say they haven't altered anything, and nor have I.
I've tried Connection Doctor: it says Mail connected with the exch. server without any problems. However, under Account Information, the server says (offline).
I've changed ports (to 25 and 587): no success.
I've deleted my password from Keychain and Mail plist and reentered it. No success.
    I've verified and repaired permissions.
I'm now not getting incoming mail either: the error message is
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Staff POP” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to host exch.wlv.ac.uk on port 25 failed.
I can send and receive using web-based OWA.
Is there anything else I can do, or is it a server problem?
    Thanks,
    Aidan

May be no help to you Aidan except comfort in numbers. Mail has started behaving erratically for me in the past week. My inbox and account mail has disappeared and my accounts keep being rejected by the webmail host similar to your problem; password rejected etc.  Then Mail closes abruptly telling me there's a problem and offering to send a report to Apple. Mail is version 4.5 and the iMac is 10.6.8. Help!

  • Mountain Lion Mail Server force reply to address

Using Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 server and the built in Mail Server.
I want to use a group mail (mail listing) for a lodge. My problem is that people tend to use reply to all when replying to a message in the group. Every time a user uses reply to all, another recipient is added to the thread ending up with a lot double mails.
I have tried to make my fellow lodge members only to use the common group mail address when replying, but without luck. I have also tried to make them setup a specific reply-to address (our group e-mail address), but they are far from computer experts.
My question! Is there anyway to have the OS X Mail Server (or another mail server for OS X) force a reply to address for users using POP3?
Hope you understand my question and sorry for any misspelling as I am from Denmark, Europe .
    Regards, Chris.

    Hi Jeffrey,
Many thanks for your input.  I did it the way you describe it.
But meanwhile I found the real reason, and aI'd like to share it with others.
If you created a local network user in the user section, this user is created in the OD.
When creating this user I like to use the initials as shortname.
My emaildresses however are configured as [email protected]
When Postfix is searching the OD for a user he searches for " firstname.lastname" and if during the user creation you omit to give this as a shortname as well, Postfix can never find this user.
So I went to all accounts, added the "firstname.lastname" combination to the shortname (the initials are kept for easy login reasons), and suddenly email is correctly routed to the users.
Seems very stupid, but t was hard to find and took me a lot of time.
    So problem solved.
    Now back to Apple:
If Postfix is looking at the sequence before the @, than it would seem logic to me that when we created users in the users section or in Workgroup Manager, and when we define emailaddresses, the sequence before the @ would be added automatically to the shortname list where Postfix is searching.  Now we have to do this manualy.
For experienced users it's no big deal, but for novices who want to setup things it's not obvious at all.
For me there is clear improvement potential for Apple.
    Thanks again for reacting.
    Bernard.

Although I have no problem getting hotmail and other yahoo account messages, my PRIMARY email account has been returning an error message "Cannot get mail, server unavailable".  But my server is working just fine for everything else except my main yahoo account.  Could anyone shed some light on this for me?  Thank you all!!

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Intermittent "The mail server rejected the password" on SBC-Yahoo

I have Mail set to automatically check email every 5 minutes from an SBC-Yahoo DSL line.
*Every day* when I come home, the "Server rejected the password" error dialog is waiting for me. Of course, the password is correct. When I re-enter it, Mail downloads the mail correctly.
This problem seems to occur more often since I switched over from the old prodigy.net to the sbc.yahoo.com servers.
While I sure wished that Mail was not totally boneheaded in handling the occasional failed POP connection attempt, I wonder whether:
    1. I am the only one having this problem
    2. It's a Yahoo problem
    3. Is there a way to fix it?

I am having the same problem. I have to re-type my password for two POP accounts each time I start MAIL. It doesn't hold the SMTP passwords either.
Once I go into the preferences and re-type them it will connect fine until I restart MAIL and I have to start all over again...I too wonder the same things!

  • Lion Mail Server Engine

    Greetings All,
I'm currently researching the Mail server used in Lion Server 10.7.2. Specifically, I'm trying to figure out what engine is used to run the mail server and also the more intriquite and internal workings of the mail server. I'm researching this for a project that I'm on so the more I can figure out about it on a technical level, the roots of the software, etc. the better off I'll be.
I'd appreciate any information that anyone can lend me or direct me towards that would help satisfy this inquiry.
    Thank You.

The only thing I've determined is that Roundcube provides the webmail portion.

  • Mail server rejecting messages and carrying out old sieve scripts

A week ago I upgraded to 10.6 and am now experiencing strange behaviour: occasionally, incoming messages do not make it to their recipient and the sender gets an old vacation reply that I had set up using sieve scripts in Leopard. Here is what the SMTP log reports when a message does not make it:
"Recipient address rejected: Service is unavailable"
I do not know how to go in and investigate what is going on with sieve scripts because it seems sieveshell has been gutted in 10.6. I currently do not have SL's new vacation message feature enabled, but it worked fine when I tested it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can remove all of the old sieve scripts...
    sudo rm -rf /usr/sieve/*
    copy/paste into terminal.

  • Can't log in to my (mobileme) email on Mail/Server rejecting password, Can't log in to my (mobileme) email on Mail/Server rejecting password

    Hi all,
I went to check my email in mail last night and my mobileme account was offline. (Gmail account is online no problem). I clicked to take it back online, but it wouldn't accept my password. My parents also have this address on their mail (2 x macbook pros on lion, 2 x iphone 4, 1 x ipad4 -if this is relevant!) as its our main business account. The same situation was on their devices.
I came into the studio this morning and tried the following on my computer:
-Re-setting password on iforgot. (This took a few attempts as I can't use alternative email address as it doesn't work and is years old, and it kept telling me my security question (Bday) was wrong when it was correct...) I got there in the end and changed the password successfully.
-Went to remove keychain, but there was nothing there at all for the account
-Deleting account and re-setting up. This didnt work, as it wouldnt accept my password (new or old).
This happened a few weeks ago as well, and resetting the password and resetting the account worked.
I also did the same on my parents devices, and the new account was set up fine, so we can at least access the emails via their computers.
The differences between the computers, and what I'm guessing the problem is, I am on Snow leopard (10.6.8), on old version of mail (4.5) and obviously not connected to icloud. They are on lion and the latest versions of mail, and on icloud.
I desperately don't want to upgrade to lion as I run lots of expensive software off my machine, (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, after effects etc) and don't want lion to mess them up.
Do you think the fact i'm on such an old version is the problem? Why would the account have been taken offline on the other devices initally though?
I have had different messages popping up:
"The MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” rejected the password for user...."
"Logging in to the MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages."
And something about the certificate not being secure.
Sorry, this has been all over the place - very behind now and rushing!! Hope it makes sense and someone can help soon, as I need to send a ton of emails this afternoon off my machine! :-) Thanks in advance!!

You can continue to run most PowerPC software in Mt. Lion by installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8:

Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping costs at 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).

  • Mail hang during large message download

I've noticed several times when I get emails that either exceed the auto download size threshold, or have large attachments on them that Mail will 'hang' during the download. I can exit out of the message but it's still spinning away and won't get any more email from the server.
I'm using a Pop email account. The only fix I've found is to "magic power cycle" the mail app using the sleep button / home key hold down. Once mail starts after this the message will fully download. It's been happening for a while, but I wanted to be sure it wasn't a fluke.
Anyone else run across this & find an easier workaround?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I have been having no end of problems with email since upgrading to 10.5 about a month ago.
Generally, after some time, various activities hang around in the Activity window (such as "evaluating message n of m") and prevent normal email updates and quitting. Neither Apple support nor the local Apple Genius were able to assist. Even reinstalling the OS (10.5.2, 10.5.3, or 10.5.4) and rebuilding the user account manually did not work. I tried running "Sample Process" in Activity Monitor on Mail.app and noticed a lot of "semaphorewait_signaltrap"s that seemed to be related to AddressBook. This led me to the following process which has (at least for now) fixed my problem:
    1. Quit (or Force Quit) Mail.
    2. In Address Book, use File>Export>Address Book Archive... to dump the contents of the address book.
    3. Quit Address Book
    4. Rename your ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder to something else (in case you want to restore it later)
    5. Start Address Book
    6. Use File>Import>Address Book Archive... to restore the contents of the address book
It may be voodoo, but it worked for me.

  • ICloud SMTP as Freemail.hu's outgoing mail server "rejects sender address"

Using verified settings of iCloud's as outgoing server (smtp.me.com, working iCloud username and password, SSL on or off, password authentication, server port 587) as of my freemail.hu (hungarian mail service provider) account on my iPhone 4 iOS5, letters sent from my freemail account arrive in Outbox as Unsent Message with the error message "The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server" - with checked working apple server at sending and otherwise perfect iCloud mail account. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

I realise you don't intend to send spam, but unfortunately there are plenty of spammers in this world who would happily use Apple's servers to send out spam. That's why Apple lock it down to @me.com and @mac.com addresses only.
GMail will allow you to send external email through their servers once you have performed some identity verification through your external email account. That may be an option for you.
