Lion makes me sad... :-(

Guess this just a rant and/or call for emotional support, but...
I'm really sad Apple made this horrible Lion thing. I upgraded my circa-2008 MacBook Pro -- which had been running perfectly fine under Snow Leopard -- and now it's so slow I can barely use it.
Worse than that, it's simply a terrible design. I've taken it for granted that Mac products "just work;" you never need to think about anything. Totally intuitive. Nothing gets in the way.
Now, I run into things I have to work around constantly. The "restore everything when you log in" thing. The "versioning" in TextEdit (I just want to save out a copy of a file! Why can't I do that??) Even gestures: I liked being able to clear everything off the desktop with a single swipe. Now, it's a different gesture, which I can't physically do. Why am I forced to re-learn this??
*What* were they thinking??
Make it go away! :-(

Firstly, no this is not an emotional support site. Best to talk with your therapist.
Secondly, you were in not way betrayed. No one twisted your arm to install Lion. You could have tested it out without affecting your old system in any way. Apple's website provided everything needed to determine if you even needed Lion.
Thirdly, as I mentioned just go back to Snow Leopard if you aren't happy with Lion. No doubt had you been using Leopard you would be complaining about Snow Leopard.
Things change, learn to adapt. Only those who adapt will survive. That's my experience with Lion and everything else. So, I live quite comfortably with Lion. I find autoresume and versions useful tools.
Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

• ICal Lion makes it very hard to read overlapping events

iCal Lion makes it very hard to read overlapping events: often one can only easily read one of them. How can we get the interface in iCal for Snow Leopard and before when they were placed size by size rather than on top, and thus obliterated.

Use Terminal.app to turn on the iCal Debug Menu -
defaults write com.apple.iCal IncludeDebugMenu 1
Then in iCal go to the debug menu > Top Sekret (sic) > Uncheck "use iPad style event layout."

• Will Lion make my Office documents not open?

I have MANY .doc and .docx documents from my PC days that I NEED. Does this upgrade to Lion make those not open in Pages like they used to? I enjoyed using Pages for .doc and .docx files along with Pages files. I was hearing that Lion makes Office files not open or work anymore. Is this so?

No, no. That's just silly confused people who have old versions of Office which require Rosetta to run (or an older PPC-based Mac), and Lion no longer includes - and can't run - Rosetta.
An upgrade to Lion will not affect the ability of your Pages application to open those files.

i cannot install apps that are upgraded to ios4. im using iphone 2g 3.1.3 this makes me sad.. why does apple need to updates many apps when we cannot update an iphone 2g anymore..

I am having the exact same problem with trying to sync my iPad with my computer. To make a long story short, I had to reinstall Windows for my computer and therefore had to reinstall itunes.
I have done back ups in the past for my ipod touch and other ipods with no problems, but unfortunately I have never been able to back up my iPad. During a sync, the iPad would always disconnect from my computer and it would never finish. it would say the connection was lost, but nothing is wrong with the connection.
So now I have over 100 apps and thousands of pictures that I am afraid will be deleted if I run the sync in itunes. I have tried to transfer purchases and it goes through the list of apps, but nothing is ever transferred.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not interested in jailbreaking my iPad to solve this problem. There should be a fix for this and I want to upgrade to ios 4.3 as the original poster. Please help

• Does OS X Lion make start up slower if you install it?

I know a Mac is not a PC but my parents are going to buy this (OS X Lion) for me but my dad has said in the past the new opperating system makes start up on a PC slower. I was pretty sure the same thing would not happen to a Mac (being the better of the two) but i just want comformation.

Initial startups after a large system upgrade are always slower, but thereafter should be fine.

• Will Lion make FCPX better?

Hi Guys
I'd appreciate any thoughts whatsoever to help unscramble my brain regarding my below query about Final Cut Pro X, which I currently do not own (have FCS3).
Based on the short article below, thanks to the imminent arrival of MacOS X Lion, could 3rd parties do "interesting things" to Final Cut Pro X?
"In MacOS X Lion, AppleScript apps have access to all the operating system class libraries. Third parties might be able to do interesting things with AppleScript access to Final Cut Pro X data using specialised commands in an AppleScript menu within the application."
http://alex4d.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/secret-fcpx-xml-multi-user-editing/
I'm no programmer, but by "interesting things" I'm wondering whether 3rd parties might be able to bring extra features to the color grading aspects of FCPX and also extra features to the sound editing aspects of FCPX?
I'm thinking in terms of how programmers create extensions for the likes of Chrome and Firefox. Do you think something like this could be possible with Final Cut Pro X thanks to Lion? If this was possible, could it make FCPX a much more attractive proposition for professional editors?

Hi
I'm also getting Choppy playback working on my mac mini, even using proxy.
(at home) I'm on FCPX 10.0.3, OS 10.6.8
Mac Mini 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 GB Ram, but only 256MB VRAM.
Is the small VRAM causing this issue? I've been editing the same project from a FW800 Hard Drive for several days and never get the type of choppy playback when at work on an 2010 model iMac. Same version of FCPX and 10.6.8. That's all I know at the moment im afraid. I can update the iMac details tomorrow morning.
Do I need a faster Mac Mini at home? Should I go to Lion?
Any help will be very much appreicated.

• Downgrade Mountain Lion to Lion - Makes me crazy!

Hi there,
Just want to remove Mountain Lion and get a fresh install of Lion.
Pressed Command+R, used Disk Utility to Inizialize the disk, rebooted but I now get a logo (denied) instead the apple logo.
Tried to press ALT and I selected the boot the dvd disk where there is Lion in it but it doesn't work too!
Any guess?
It makes me crazy!
Thanks to everyone.

Not true I have ML and run X11 no problem. The confusion might be because X11 was removed from the OS install and made a separate package to download.
See https://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.7.5
X11 while included with OS X was always really maintained by a seperate group. With ML they just made the break more obvious. This actually helps because the X11 updates no longer depend on the OS X update cycle, they can issue updates and fixes for X11 when they need to/
Apple maintains technical mailing lists in additon to these boards. For X11 support see https://lists.apple.com/mailman/options/x11-users/

• Signature feature on Lion makes Files too large

Is there a way to make the file size smaller after adding a signature in preview on Lion?

There may be other possible solutions, but here are a couple that I can come up with.
1) If you're running Web services and have a registered domain, you could make a folder in the web directory - "filegrab" for example - and use ACLs to share that folder out to your users. They could then place the file in that directory and roll a link to it, such as "http://mydomain.com/filegrab/document.pdf" to include in an email that would download it via their browser. I've done this myself so I know it works. Of course, this entails having Web and DNS services configured and running which is not without tribulations for the novice sysadmin.
2) FTP - or a derivative thereof. I would NOT recommend using the FTP services in OS X Server for this. I've found that CrushFTP serves very well for FTP services on OS X Server, is very reasonably priced and runs its own Web server interface. User creation and access permissions are easily done, including unrestricted access, though I would suggest using a "public" account with password to prevent snoopers from gaining open access to the files you post. Best to have a public static IP for doing this. Still, your users can email a link to the FTP server with the login credentials and have the client grab the files right through the browser.

• Listen up people!!! Before upgrading to Lion, make a backup!!!

And not just a TimeMachine backup -- go out and buy an external hard drive (they are cheap) and use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make a bootable clone of the disk.

I wish I had done a backup other than TM. Lion is working perfectly on my MBP (2010) except it will not recognize my TM backup on a WD MyBookWorld external drive any longer. I posted elsewhere and had a response that said that Western Digital is aware of the problem and is working on a work around.
Does anyone here know of a fix for this?

• "FF makes me sad" makes me REALLY SAD. it doesn't work. Spent 10 minutes articulating my problems and the "submit" button doesn't work!!

As others, I am having many problems since upgrading both Adobe and Mozilla programs. Firefox crashes so consistently that it has been rendered useless. If I check my processes, Flashplayerplugin repeatedly makes it way through the list even if I "End the Process".
If I am LUCKY enough to be able to open FF without it crashing and can actually access the upper menu, then proceed to "Manage Add ons" and disable the "shockwave media player plugin" or whatever it is called, then the crashes cease. No more crashes. Bad news is that I can obviously no longer view any .flv files. So I can see/read the news without crashing but God forbid I want to watch a news video or youtube. Then I have to re-enable the plugin and here comes the crashes (FF not responding, etc.) Please help me with a workaround. I have read numerous post and Adobe blames FF, FF blames Adobe, etc. Personally, I think the fault lies with Adobe, but I would just like a solution. All of my programs are up to date, although I have not tried the new Adobe Beta, but I hear it has it's own issues. Thank you for any help regarding this problem.
Chris

This can be caused if the text that you want to submit is too long (there is a size limit).
If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more crash reports that have this format:
*bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.
*You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website.
See:
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Mozilla+Crash+Reporter
You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

• Why is Firefox spamming me? I open it and it tries to update, fails, as soon as I close it, it starts an update, it won't stop and I can't use Firefox, which makes me sad because I love my Firefox :(

Firefox opens in a window that says please wait a few minutes while updating and than it opens directly to a new window that says... "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer and than restart Firefox to start again. I exit out and it repeats, and repeats, and repeats etc. I don't even have to open Firefox for it to do this... I can't get onto Firefox and I'm really frustrated. Please Help!~

Surely somone at Apple owns a Macbook
