Lion MBP Crashes Every Hour – Help Save an Aging Mac?
Hello. I could do with some advice!
The Issue
Almost exactly an hour after starting up (as far as I can tell), apps become unresponsive, and the beachball appears. I can usually still move the mouse, but iTunes playback ceases and nothing else works. It does not depend on what I am doing at the time. The only way out is to force a shut-down using the power key.
This has happened repeatedly for the last two days. For the most recent crash, I had activity monitor open in the background so I could see what was going on – it stopped working 8-9 seconds before I could no longer send iChat messages.
Spec
My MBP is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster – it is a 15" 2008 penrhyn model (with 2.4 GHz dual core). It originally came with Leopard, I think, but has since been upgraded to Lion via the App Store.
I have also upgraded the following: the RAM was replaced the day I got the Mac; the original hard drive was swapped out for a 500GB model two years ago; and about one year ago I stripped out the optical drive and replaced that with a 64GB SSD, which is now my boot drive. Another thing to note is that my battery ballooned recently so I have been using it without a battery installed (this has not been a problem).
My Progress
Here's a summary of what I've done so far and the results I've had:
Restarting: Obviously no dice.
Resetting the PRAM: No luck.
Hardware Test Mode: AHT was not installed with Lion, but I downloaded the SL copy posted in this thread. It ran (slowly) two or three times, but each time got stuck when testing the logic board (again, forcing me to do a hard shut-down).
Deleting new software: I uninstalled any software that I had picked up in the last week.
OnyX: I ran various cache cleaners using the OnyX app.
Safe Mode: I ran the system in safe mode, using it as normal. After an hour it crashed again.
So no luck so far – I can't tell if it's a hardware or software problem. I would love it to be a software problem because I would like it if my MBP lasted a little while longer. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else to try, they would be welcome.
I would happily post a log if needed, but I'm not sure where to find one (it doesn't come up with a crash report when the Mac comes back on).

Since I downloading the new FireFox, it crashes every hour or so, then will keep crashing when I try restart it. Only restarting my computer helps, but then it will crash again. 90% of the time, when sending crash report(s), a mesage that there was a problem sending it appears. Please fix the problem and/or tell me what I can do.

FCP7 crashes every hour on MBP9,1 an ML
Hi all,
I have had trouble with FCP7. It crashes every hour and i am working in a big project my client is being peeved so i need help please … !
I bought a new MBP9,1 because my old one is dead. First of all i recovered anything with TimeMaschine. an FCP crashed than i format the HD from my MBP an make a "clean install" from ML 10.8.2 than QT7 an Rosetta and than FCP. It works fine the next 4 hours. than i crashes … again and again. I have upgraded my MBP with 16 GB Ram … ok may be to much so i installed the original 4 GB -> and FCP7 crashed. May be the ext. FW Drive is to slow and i copyed the Data on the internal HD -> and FCP crashed. My Project is 500 GB / 220 GB with HDV Footage 200 GB with Pics from the timelabs Gopro. A sure way to crash FCP is to import a Timelabs-Pic folder (with 9999) into FCP - ok if it works without crashes than it crashes if you make a timeline.
At last FCP crashes if i am play a sub timeline,
or i will make a fast look with fast forward.
or i change the view of FCP.
If i load the Project the content in the canvas looks green or with green fine horizontal bars. So it looks like a codec error, or a grafic problem.
I dont know what to do - on my old MBP (Intel Core2 Duo 2,4 GHz / 8 GB Ram / 1 TB) FCP works fine. Unfortunately i can´t install 10.6.8 on my new MBP.
If anyone has any Idea i´ll realy realy grateful …

a good idea. The Pics are in 1920*1080 my MacMini and Photoshop was worked a few days to resize my 3-Month-every-Minute timelabs Pics so that i have finaly only 200 GB Pics. But i think my Project is to big! My FCP Project File is 157 MB!
I´ve have had a long Skpye session with a good friend who worked for the German Television in Washington, he worked with Final Cut since a few years. His Idea sounds good. I open a new Project and copy my Mastersequenze in the new Project - wow no crashes! So i copy Bin for Bin and Sequence for Sequence in the new Project. So i will see if it works.

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me. I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Dreamweaver 2014.1 crashes every time I save a file
Since upgrading to the latest version of Dreamweaver it now crashes every time I save a file.
I have tried doing a save as using Dreamweaver CC instead which works fine.
Is there something I can do to give it a lobotomy without losing all of my preferences?

How to Collect crash logs on win –
You need to add these entries in registry.
1. Go to run, type regedit and enter. This will open Registry Editor.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting->Right Click->New->Key. New key named "New Key #1" will be created. Rename it to LocalDumps.
Add two entries LocalDumps
2.1 Right click on LocalDumps->New->Expandable String Value (REZ_EXPAND_SZ). Double click on the entry created and add value name : DumpFolder and value data : %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps.
2.2 Right click on LocalDumps->New->DWORD (32 bit) Value(REG_DWORD). Double click on the value created and add value name : DumpType and value data :1
Next time when the application crashes you will find the crash dump at C:\Users[UserName]\AppData\Local\CrashDumps. Dumps will be created only in case of crash and not hang.

MBP crashing every 5 mins Please help!!
Hello,
I finally decided to make the 'Switch' just to find myself with alot of trouble. Right after getting my brand new MBP 2Ghz out of the box two days ago, it started crashing.
Problem seems to be happening when I download updates, or try to see heavy webpages.
I used my old computer to download the latest firmware and OS X update and installed it into my MBP using a USB memory thing, but that does not solve the problem.
I also ran the disc utility to make sure that my new computer didnt have problems and nothin, still crashing.
Please help!
ThanksSorry you are having problems. Here are some suggestions:
[1] To make certain you are not having hardware problems, insert Installation Disc 1 and restart while holding down the D key. Choose the extended test option. If you get an error message, call AppleCare.
If no errors reported,
[2] I would recommend you do a disk wipe and a clean install of the operating system. To do that, restart from Install Disc 1 while holding down the C key. After bootup, choose Disk Utility from the menu. Select your MBP startup disk and choose Erase (some recommend Secure Erase, which may catch any bad blocks on your drive). Secure Erase takes more time.
Then do a new install of the operating system and the included applications and demos.
Play with the computer a while. It should not be crashing. I've had mine since March 30 with nary a panic, crash or freeze.
Don't add any files from your old computer yet, or download any apps from the Net. Now hook up to the Net and select Software update. Install everything. Note: Some people have had crashes related to the setup or hardware of their wireless routers. If that happens, try an Ethernet connection to your modem and do the updates. Read this forum and search re router problems.
Play with the computer some more, web browsing, etc.
If you had used Migration Assistant to bring over files from a previous Mac, that may have been the source of problems. Think about fresh installations of just those applications that you need and that you know to be compatible with your Intel Mac. Then bring over just the data for those files.
Good luck. It's possible, though not likely, that there had been a problem with the original installation of your operating system. If so, that problem should have been corrected. -
Not sure if this is Snow Leopard related but my MBP is crashing every day on average for the last week. Not sure if it is 10.6.1 related but things have definitely got worse since I upgraded to SL. I get the 'Grey screen of death' and have to power off and re-boot.
I have the 2.66ghz model with 4gb RAM.

Wrt610n crashes every hour when I use VPN
With complete consistency, if I am VPN'ed into my work network, my wrt610n (version 1, with most recent version 1 firmware) crashes every 45 minutes to an hour. My wireless connection locks up, and it necessitates that I unplug and plug in the router. I've tried various wireless settings, security on, security off, WPA2, WPA, etc, to no avail. I tried changing the security association parameters, also to no avail. The router gets warm, but not hot, and has no issues for another 45mins to an hour after reboot. I tried cooling down the router (I've run into many Cisco devices that lock up when even slightly warm), but this did not fix the issue either.
If I do not use VPN, the router stays alive for days at a time with no issues.
Has anyone run into this issue? Were you able to resolve it? Is it worth calling technical support?

Message Edited by iamgiantherockstar on 03-01-2010 08:12 AMI chatted with tech support. They asked me to turn on port forwarding for 47, 50, 1723, and 500, and to set the MTU size to 1300. I tried this, and unfortunately it didn't fix my problem. Also, I disabled the wireless radios to isolate the issue. I plugged in to my ethernet port, and had the same issue, which was surprising to me. Even using the wired connection with the radios off, after about 45 minutes of VPN tunnelining through the router, it locked up.
If I use VPN for a little while, under 30 minutes. Turn it off for a while, say 5 minutes. The router does not lock up. It seems that it might be hitting some buffer overflow or threshold, etc. Not sure, but it is a very weird problem.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

ServerBackup delegates some of its work to sharePoints_backup. The latter crashes but ServerBackup seams to proceed with the rest of its work (Timemachine completes successfully).
Still wondering why sharePoints_backup crashes.

Did not find anything in event log.

I read all info about my problem but nothing works
I dellete totaly FF from notebooks ,even clean regedit. Have last version of flash player and video driver (there is only one version of video driver on vaio support) But it still crashes.

Premiere CS5 Crashing every 5 to 7 minutes on Mac Pro
Hi Forum,
I know it's been asked by many people before, but the situation described by other editors for some reason seems a little different than in their cases, so I need to ask my own question.
I work with video/audio files recorded using Canon 5D Mark II camera. After I launch the project I wait a few minutes until the software loads all media. Due to the job requirements I have to have all footage placed in a sequence on the timeline. I scrub through the timeline selecting the good shots. I save the project about once a minute as per client request. I copy some of the clips to the clipboard and paste them to different sequences.
From what I could observe, the software crashes in four situations:
– sometimes while or immediately after I paste the clip into a different sequence;
– sometimes when I just begin scrubbing through a new clip after I deleted a small portion of the previous clip;
– sometimes when I save, usually after deleting a small portion of a clip (in that case the save bar freezes and if I'm fast I can prevent the crash bu canceling the save);
– and sometimes when I extend or shorten a clip with a Trim tool, after I used the Razor tool on a clip.
In all cases I get the rainbow ball first and then the software crashes.
All cases seem to have one thing in common: they all occur after I do something to the clip, on the next action. Maybe this information is not relevant though, correlation doesn't imply causation.
Is there a doctor in the house who could help diagnose the patient?

Any "crashing" is highly UNpopular on this forum. We all hate it, whether PC, or Mac. Unfortunately, I believe that a lot of folk are still "thinking" about how to help you. Also, some folk are probably out of the mix, as they are PC-only. I know that I am totally lost with things-Mac, so am pretty much useless here.
Not sure that I have poured over the entire thread, as I hope that a Mac-user would be around to get this solved almost instantly. However, if you have not posted the full details of your workstation, I'd do that, in case someone spots a potential issue for you. If it's up-thread already, just ignore that request. Also, if it's not a Mac-specific issue, but maybe some hardware issue, then perhaps the PC-folk can offer something useful.
Wish I even had something for you to try, but you know how Mac-illiterate I am.
