Lion & Mountain Lion won't join domain
Hi,
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 network, with OS X 10.8 Server and various Macs running 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.
However, we are having problems joining OS X Lion and Mountain Lion machines to the domain, while Snow Leopard Macs work fine.
With Lion & ML, when we try and bind to the Windows Server domain, the following error is returned:
"The authentication server could not be contacted (5200)"
And
"The authentication server could not be contacted" (without the error code)
We have tried joining the domain using the IP address of the server, with no luck. The Macs can ping the domain controller and such. The domain controller also handles DNS, which is properly set in the DNS settings on the Macs.
Our domain name is similiar to this: orgname-idcode
All Servers, Macs are patched with the latest updates. We just can't understand why Snow Leopard works while the others fail.
Any idea?
Thanks.
Hi ChrisU,
It sounds like it may be DNS related. Although this article is older and references 10.5, I would make sure the reverse lookups are in place per this article:
Mac OS X v10.5: Verifying DNS consistency for Active Directory binding
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3394
Also, this article will enable debugging logs for the Mac side of things, both AD and OD:
Mac OS X Server v10.5, 10.6: Enabling Directory Service debug logging
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3186
I hope this helps!

Stuck in a limbo: can't install Safari or Lion/Mountain Lion, can't access App Store
If someone would take up this challenge and attempt to solve it with me, I would appreciate it! I have troubleshooted for 2 days now to no avail.
This is what happened:
1) I accidentally installed Safari 6.0, even if I have Lion 10.7. which doesn't run the new version
2) This disabled my use of Safari and my access to App Store
3) With a combination of AppDelete + Pacifist I tried deleting all Safari files, and re-installing old Safari 5.4 from scratch.
I rebooted, repaired permissions and did a disk check.
4) Rebooted again, tried to open the newly installed Safari, but it gives an error:
"Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X."
5) At this point I thought to revert back to a previous point in Time Machine. Unfortunately all the points in Time Machine somehow showed Safari 6.0 (even a month-old points), so reverting back to an old point didn't help.
6) I try logging into AppStore to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I can't do that, since it needs Safari to run and I don't have a Safari anymore!
7) Now I tried re-installing Lion from restart + cmd+R, and it asked for Apple ID to start the installation.
--> At this point I am getting desperate, as this computer was purchased second-hand, so I don't have the Apple ID used to install Lion!
8) I try searching for Apple's official support, but obviously my warranty has expired, besides it's based in another country so they can only call cellphones from that country!
So I cannot enter App Store; reinstall Safari; reinstall Lion; or upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have no access to Apple official support. I currently work in a developing country with limited access to any MAC support.
I don't know what to try anymore!
- How can I enter App Store without Safari?
- How can I reinstall Lion without the original Apple ID?
- How can I upgrade to Mountain Lion without App Store?
I'm STUCK! Please help!!Anyone?
I finally managed to download the newest combo update and installed it successfully!
However Safari still doesn't open. It keeps saying the following:
Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
I also finally got access to App Store: but the download of Mountain Lion doesn't complete, because it seems to need Safari.
So I'm still stuck with the two issues:
i) Safari doesn't work, and I can't get it to work unless I can reinstall/upgrade the OS.
ii) I can't upgrade the OS without Safari!
--- unless someone knows a way to install Lion/Mountain Lion _without_ Safari??
Thanks for all your help! -
What is the best way to upgrade my late 2008 mbp with Leopard on it to Lion/Mountain Lion?
For whatever reason I never upgraded to Snow Leopard when it came out, and then things were a bit clunky to go to lion so I passed. I would like to upgrade to lion/mountain lion but I am not aware of any easy ways to do it, so what are my best possible options for making this happen?
Hello,
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
* Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
* DVD drive for installation
* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.
Call Apple Sales...in the US: 1-800-MY-APPLE. Or Support... 1-800-275-2273

Has anyone figured out a way to make the first desktop on Lion/Mountain Lion moveable?
Has anyone figured out a way to make the first desktop on Lion/Mountain Lion moveable? I.e. I can reorder all the other desktops but I can't change the position of the very first one. I just don't use it becasue I am changing the order of my desktops a lot, and it's annoying to not be able to put any other desktop before Desktop 1. Thanks!
or my actual question is -- is there anything inherantly wrong with this approach.. i mean, if i can get it to make it through consistently, is there a problem with it repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row? is it a drain on system resources or can it break anything etc.?
Although I'm far from being an expert in programming, I would answer NO. Imho, you've just got a brillant idea! (As for “repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row”… you could add a short delay (like “delay 1”) inside the repeat block, but I don't think it's a must.) -
Question about Lion/Mountain Lion installation on a new Mac
How is Lion/Mountain Lion installed on brand new Macs? Is it freshly installed from scratch or are they done by way of upgrade like when you buy it from the app store? Thanks.
When I got my new Macbook Pro (with Lion already installed), I purchased a 16GB USB Flash Thumb Drive, than used SuperDuper (or was it Carbon Copy Cloner) to copy the mostly original contents of the new Macbook Pro to the USB Thumb Drive. And because I'm the paranod type when it comes to backups, I did it again, on a SD Card and did it again.
I also used the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant to put a recovery partition on a few external devices (including the USB Thumb Drive and the SD Card), so I have multiple ways to recover Lion should something go "Bump in the Night".
As to how Apple gets the OS on the disk, my guess is that at the factory they clone a master image onto the disk using a very fast sector by sector copy or a utility similar to SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (but most likely something of Apple's creation). -
I have a Macbook pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (2011). Will Lion, Mountain Lion or Marverick makes it run faster or slower?
Snow Leopard is still the most efficient OSX from Apple. I have a late 2011 MBP running Lion with no performance issues.
I suggest the following; Install 8 GB RAM if you do not have that already. (The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial). The newer OSX's are trifle more RAM hungry.
Partition your HDD and install one of the newer OSX's in the new partition and try it out. This allows you to 'retreat' to Snow Leoprad if you find the newer OSX is not to your liking.
Also note that the newer OSX's do not support PPC applications. That means that there is a possibility that some of your current applications will not work and may have to be updated or replaced.

Boot Camp - Lion / Mountain Lion latest video drivers Win 7 64-bit
I've been running Boot Camp on my late 2008 Mac Pro w/ OS X Lion and Windows 7 64-bit for some time now, no probs. Two years ago I installed the Apple version of the Nvidia GT 120 video card...has been working like a charm. Currently all latest OS updates are applied.
At issue: I'm trying to get a new plug-in for After Effects to install and it requires a more up-to-date video driver than the circa 2010 driver installed w/ Boot Camp (Leopard?). When I upgraded to Lion, I assumed all latest drivers would be installed in Boot Camp, and I've seen no info on whether Mountain Lion would provide more current video drivers...running 'Update Driver' (just to see what would happen) within Windows 7 yields "You're using the latest driver", which is not actually correct, but may be in the 'Boot Camp ecosystem'.
Are there any ways I can reliably update the video drivers? I know the retail/Nvidia latest is "296.10" from March, 2012...but likely that won't install or work properly in a Boot Camp setup (or am I wrong?).
Any info/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Wait for GTX 670 down the road then.
You had to have used BCA, downloaded and then run the setup - you can even just navigate to, find Nvidia driver folder and check the Details of that. Or why bother, the real driver is Nvidia anyway.

How to tell: Device Manager for one. But the easiest way to see everything, including temps, fan speeds, chipsets and driver versions - and more:
http://www.aida64.com/product/aida64-extreme-edition/overview
Also, most every Mac Pro owner has needed to manually download and install RealTek driver too for audio out the back ports.
Go to www.realtek.com though instead of using MediaFire - they have started causing a lot of pop-unders and other adware that I find disgusting and questionable, even if the site and service needs "ad dollars" popups were something users ran from and why we (try) using and turning off all those things they manage to find ways around. And the malware/adware and SQL-injection schemes are still with us. So watch for and personally avoid MediaFire - might be paranoid but then I consider it reasonable caution.

Updating Blackbook with lion/mountain lion?
Hello,
I was wondering if any of you has any experience with updating an older macbook/blackbook from late 2007 with lion? Do I get any advantages at all, or can the Macbook even handle the update. All the gestures and so forth cannot be used, that I am aware of, but I was just wondering if any advantages could be reached with the update?
Thanks for any replies..Hi..
Lion's requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available spare

Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks
Hello!
May be it is a stupid question, but I would be happy to get some answers...
I have MacBook Pro early 2011, 2.2 Ghz, 4 Gb RAM. Pretty powerful machine. Currently I have Snow Leopard. It was his first OS. In beginning of November I updated my Mac to Mavericks, I thought that if my Mac has very good hardware it will run new system very good. Instead of the nice performance, I got many problems! Mac was lagging, the usage of the RAM was 3,99 of 4 Gb with one app opened (common problem for many people, since they've upgraded to the Mavericks). After all those troubles I decided to go back to Snow Leopard, I have my original SL CDs and formatted my whole HDD ( deleted Bootcamp partition as well) and did a clean install of SL, and it began to work perfectly, as it was before Mavericks!
So, now I have important question, I would like to upgrade my current SL to something newer, I have a hope that new Mavericks update 10.9.1 will be better than previous one that I had (10.9). If not, than I would like to upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion, whoch one would you advice?
I want to upgrade it because there is majority of apps that are developed to work on 10.7 and they do not support my current 10.6.8.
May be somebody from you knows what update will be better to do, to not lose current performance of my MBP. I am already afraid to do any upgrade because I had bad experience with Mavericks...
I have to add that my MacBook Pro is clean in physical and non-physical sence. I did the AHT, I also opened back cover, cleaned it from the dust. Everything is perfect. And I am pretty sure, that after any upgrade to above mentioned OSs, my MBP should not lose performance and speed!!!
Looking forward for your ideas! Thank you in advance
Best regards,
Eugen4Gb too litle? Not True at all. Of course more is better, and i do swuggest 8GB, but only because it's often cheap and easy.
First, i dont have my long write up, but using 3.9 GB/4Gb with ne app is normal. 10.9 manages RAM very, very differently. You hsould rally only look at "compression level" and "swaps" - both should be low.
on a 2011 with 4GB 10.9 runs great. And in fact it runs similarly to 10.6. IMNSHO, the two best modern OSes are 10.6.8 and 10.9.1. If your 10.9 didnt run well, something was interfering or somethign was corrupted.
I'm running it on 2009 MBP hardware, with 4G.
I think the OP needs to identify the source of slowness, adn ignore the % of RAM used. Ping me and i can send you my writeup on Memory Management.

HT1461 Office for Mac and Lion / Mountain Lion
Hi everybody,
Could you tell me if Microsoft office applications will run under OS X Lion or Mountain Lion?
Because I'm using now Office Mac 11 with Snow Leopard OS X vers 10.6.8, and I'm expecting to update to Mountain Lion if...
Thanks a lot for repliesMicrosoft Office 2011 works fine (well, as fine as Office ever works ) on OS X 10.7 Lion. Any information provided about Mountain Lion comes from developers using beta versions of that OS (and violating their agreements with Apple by commenting on it) and may or may not hold true with the public version of Mountain Lion. Contact Microsoft for full compatibility information, though they probably will not post details until ML is released.
Regards. -
I called 1800-my-apple, to purchase OS X MOUNTAIN LION. I have been told by the representative, that I'll be receiving a email containing the software and later on. I'll be receiving the product key. Would i be able to transfer it to a flash drive. just to perform a fresh install on my macbook, when ever I want.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. After installing Mountain Lion, you should know that the installer is deleted, so before upgrading and after finishing the download, close the installer and use Lion Diskmaker to create a DVD or USB drive with Mountain Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com
The USB drive or DVD will contain the OS X Mountain Lion installer, which can be used without an Internet connection. To start up from it, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting and choose the DVD or USB drive. After starting up from this USB drive or DVD, you can use Disk Utility to erase the hard disk. Make a backup of your files before erasing the hard disk -
Canon A1 iPF605 and Lion / Mountain Lion Crashing
Have had this problem with Lion and now also Mountain Lion.
I have two printers on the network, our Brother A4 colour laser workhorse and a newer Canon A1. The Canon iPF605 has drivers from Canon which should I believe work at least with OSX 10.7 but they never did on my machine with Lion and still don't now after Mountain Lion upgrade.
The symptom is that no matter what program I am using (Safari, Firefox, Preview, Adobe, Mail even!) if I go to the print menu, and in the drop down menu select my Canon A1 printer the program will crash presumably in trying to load the Canon driver software. I have three other Macs in the office which all run Snow Leopard and the printer software works OK on those. I really want to bring some of the other machines up to Mountain Lion but A1 printing is a necessity here.
I am using latest Canon drivers 2.66 from here: http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010633.asp. I don't know if I can maybe install a generic driver? Don't need any flashy features just want to print A1 to the printer in colour.
As a note the Canon utility software works OK

There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver. Refer to our FAQ section for connectivity issues.
In such a case as this I offer the following solution:
People who need to SCAN and/or PRINT without a compatible Lion or Montain Lion driver from their manufacturer can use Apple's very basic "PRINT & SCAN" utility in System Preferences:
Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click System Preferences .
Click Print & Scan ( ).
Click Print .

Late 2013 MacbookPro downgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion
I recently purchased one of the newer macbook pro models with Mavericks pre-installed. Is it possible to downgrade the OS to Lion or Mountain Lion? It's fine if the drive is erased in the process.
Unfortunately my company's IT department doesn't support Mavericks yet - I need to use one of the older versions to use the computer on the company network. We just ran into this issue ourselves.
We work in a secure environment that for any new OS's, HW, SW, etc, we need to run through a lenghty testing/tiering process. We just spent the last year trying to get 10.8 Mountain Lion approved so we can upgrade our current outdated macs (still running 10.6).
When they displayed the new 15" Retina MacBook's a few weeks back, we talked to our vendor who initially stated that these systems would be backwards compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and did not see any readily available information that stated otherwise on the Apple Support sites.
I initially wanted to order one system for testing when they first came out but management decided to order a few dozen, thinking that they were compatible.
We finally get them in and of course they are not compatible with 10.8 Mountain Lion, which is currently the only Mac OS that is approved for our environment, and we can't just test/approve 10.9 Mavericks to use since again there is a lengthy process we need to go through to test/approve the OS.
So now we have to send about 50 of them back and hope that we can somehow get our hands on about 50 of the previous gen 15" MacBook Pro's that we need.
Hopefully Apple will come out with some sort of fix for these new systems to be compatible with Mountain Lion. -
Question about updating from Lion Mountain Lion
Hi,
I am currently running Os x 10.7 Lion on my Macbook Pro and thinking about buying Mountain Lion from the App Store. I have a few friends who have dowloaded it and have not been able to run their messages because they do not have a serial number. What is the cause of this? How can I ensure that this will definately not happen to me? I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion purely for the use of messages and the other cool features that there is now. Is it worth it?
Thanks.nnectw wrote:
My friends 'About this mac' section looks like this and because of this he is not able to use messages and facetime? Anyways, if I have a problem with Mountain lion, am I able to get a refund and then downgrade to lion easily?
Has he had the logic board or any other major part replaced? -
Repeated Hard Drive Corruption + Lion + Mountain Lion
About a month ago, I noticed very slow performance (spinning beach ball) etc on my late 2011 MBP (MacBookPro8,2).
I ran Disk Utility > Verify Disk, which advised that my drive needed to be repaired.
I then ran the repair as advised only to be told next that the drive could NOT be repaired and that I should backup as much information as possible.
Alas, the system was rendered useless at that point and I was forced to wiped the drive, reinstall Lion, and recover my data from Time Machine.
I ran disk utility after all of that, and everything was fine.
Within 7 days of doing all of this however, it all happened again... then again 3 days later.
Suspecting hard drive failure, I took the opportunity to replace the factory installed HDD with an SSD.
I also took the opportunity to replace the memory, increasing the system memory from 8gb to 16gb.
Lastly, I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and upgraded all my software, periodically running Disk Utility along the way to ensure that all was fine.
That was last week.
Yesterday, while using the computer on battery power, and while doing nothing processor intensive, I noticed that that the fan was spinning up to full blast and my battery was being drained as a result. At first, I looked here in the Community for solutions, and found several reports of overhearing and fan issues by Mountain Lion users. I thought therefore that this was related to my recent Mountain Lion upgrade. Perhaps it still is.
However, I ran Disk Utility again as one user here suggested, just to check.
To my shock, the data on the new SSD is now corrupt, see below from Disk Utility.
I ran this from within OS X Mountain Lion, but I get the same thing when I boot from my Mountain Lion USB Stick and run Disk Utility there:
Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking file systemPerforming live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file Lost_Photos.storedata
(It should be 102 instead of 6480)
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 41853982 instead of 41847604)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
Based on all previous experiences, I suspect that running Repair will render the machine useless; unable to reboot once again. I'm also concerned about the sudden drop in battery life, the overheating and the resulting fan activity.
Some helpful facts:
1) As I write this my fans are spinning faster than usual, and all I have running is my browser (Firefox)
2) Activity Monitor seems fine to me, nothing out of the ordinary there.
3) I'm using the intel graphics chip (it's set to switch dynamically, but I have tried an app (gfxCardStatus) that tells me for sure what I'm running.
4) On reboot, the moment that my desktop is displayed, the fans spin all the way up. This may be related to the disk issues, but still highly unusual and wasn't happening yesterday morning.
5) Mountain Lion was installed a week ago, all of the necessary indexing that usually happens post upgrade have been done and the machine was running perfectly fine, and quietly until yesterday.
6) Other than running Apple system updates, and actually removing old apps, I haven't made any software changes.
7) I have a 512GB SSD with 379GB free
I am overseas, and therefore unable to visit an Apple Store. I'll have to get my support from this forum.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks. I have exactly the same setup as you, including the Crucial M4. Good stuff.
I already had iStatPro installed.
At boot, the fan spins up to full, then slowly spins back down to ~3600 RPM where it remains when completely idle. It never goes below that these days. In the past I wouldn't hear it at all when the system was idle, now I hear it constantly, and the battery drains faster than before.
The temperature right after boot for me is in the 130+ degree ballpark by the time I am able to get to iStat. After the fans kick in at full blast at boot, the temperature comes down to about 101 degress on the CPU. This is with the machine doing virtually nothing.
I was wondering if this spike had anything to do with the installation of the M4, and the fact that the machine now boots far faster than it used to. However, I find it odd that this just started a few days ago, and days after I installed the SSD.
Thanks for responding.
