Lion on external drive. No sound or camera

I have latest iMac running Snow Leopard and have downloaded and installed Lion on an external USB drive. The mic, speakers and camera do not work.
Hel+p appreciated.

The symptoms you describe correspond to the situation where you have your media on the external drive but the iTunes database (where playlists, ratings, etc. are stored) on the C: drive.  If you can access the old drive, look for the C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes folder, and in particular for the iTunes Library.itl file.  Then see turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for steps necessary to bring your library into a standardized layout - I'd suggest that you aim to have the complete library on the external drive, in this structure:
where you primarily make use of iTunes' consolidation functions to move files and folders into this structure.  Once everything's in place, get a second external drive and use this to create and maintain a backup of your library (much easier with this "well formed" layout since everything you need to backup is in a common folder).

  • Installing lion onto external drive frozen during OSX install

I was trying to install lion into a clean hardrive, using lion recovery.
it's downloaded the first part, and the imac has restarted once and loaded up the "install Mac  OS X " page, it said it was going to take 25mins to install.
It's frozen, about 20% into so install, and now i have the beach ball mouse pointer. and nothing is working.
    how can i fix this?

You will need to force quit the installer by shutting down the computer. When you restart look in your Applications folder to see if you still have the Lion installer application. If your do, then I suggest doing the following:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Use Lion DiskMaker 2.0 to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
To reinstall Lion on the external drive:
Partition and format the external drive properly:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Boot from the flash drive you made. Select the external drive as the target, then install Lion.

  • Lion on external drive

I own Lion, but, it's on my external drive. I would like to move it to my iMac's hard drive, like a migration. I would also like to keep my network information.

I really have no idea why there is a problem. You can move your TM backup to another drive. Just clone the TM backup drive to another drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the other drive. Source means the TM backup volume.
However, if you have an extra drive then why not try installing Lion on that other drive.
I guess the Lion installer must be balking at the fact that TM is using the drive for backup. Nevertheless, I tracked this down: OS X Lion: Installer reports "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer" The suggested problem is the inability of the installer to make the Recovery HD image. Try the suggested solution to see if that works before you go to any further extremes.

  • TS1550 OSX Upgrade (Mountain Lion) turned external drive to "read-only" and now I can not do back-ups on time machine.  How do I fix this?

I recently upgraded to mountain lion, latest version OS and now my external drives are read-only.  They are formatted Mac OS Extended and I have been using one of them for Time Machine.  How do I fix?
    Thanks

  • After installing 10.9.5 I keep getting "Application Not Responding" for iMovie, Preview, Elements 10, Quicktime. Also my external drive showing up as camera on in iMovie. I do not have time machine. All was working well before! Processor  2.5GHz i5

    iMac 2.5 GHz
    Intel Core i5
    4GB Memory

    I have a similar problem.
Moreover, as my external drive is split in 2 for (a) regular storage // (b) time machine usage, I can see in the Finder that I can connect to the (a) regular storage part and use it normally (image 1).
And I cannot connect to the backup part in Finder , nor see it in Disk Utility, nor use it in Time Machine (although it's listed in the Time Machine preferences, image 2), as it does not connect (image 3).
    Can somebody help?

  • Clean install of Mountain Lion on external drive

My wife's MacBook is running very slow. Her disk is almost full, so I'd like to upgrade her to a larger, SSD drive. My plan is to mount the new drive in an external USB enclosure and do a clean install on it. Then I'll drag over her user files and reinstall her apps. I have two (+1) questions about this:
    1. Can I do the clean install with the external drive attached to *my* computer? Or does the install have be be done from the computer on which the drive will eventually be used? In other words, does the ML installed on the drive differ in some way depending on the computer it will be used on?
    2. When I do the clean install, I know that I will eventually be asked for a admin user name, full name, etc. Is it critical that these exactly match those of my wife's current computer, so that the permissions of all the files that I will eventually move over (by hand, not setup assistant or whatever it's called) will still work correctly?
    3. Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks for the reply. This was indeed the key to my problem.
Thank you for taking time to help me out on this.
    Best wishes,

  • New (Oct. 2013) retina MBP. Can I boot to Mountain Lion on external drive?

    Hi there,
I edit in my office with a Mac Pro (2010) desktop, but occasionally I have to edit out of office.  My trusty old 2008 MacBook Pro just died, so I've ordered a new retina MBP.  It will come loaded with Mavericks.  The problem is that my editing software (Avid Media Composer) is always an OS release or two behind, and Media Composer doesn't run properly (yet) with Mavericks.
So... here's my question.  I've got a 250Gb SSD that I can put in an external enclosure.  I could install Mountain Lion on this SSD, and then install Avid.
Then, on those occasions when I need to edit out of office with my new retina MBP, I would boot up to this drive.
Does this sound good?  Will the new retina MBP work run on Mountain Lion?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Malcolm

You might be able to depending on the exact version of Mt Lion you have on that external. The newest iMacs originally got shipped with a special version of Mt Lion 10.8.4 (right not even the newest release of Mt Lion) that included the proper driver package for the new hardware. If you had a copy of that your new 2013 MBP might boot from it. But since you have a copy from a 2010 model I doubt it would. The only way to tell is TRY IT. No harm will come to your new MBP if it doesn't.

  • Video capture setup to external drive

hi guys, I'm a new FCP user, my Canon XL2 is about to arrive any day and I understand I'll need an external drive to prevent screwing up my internal drive. Maxtor has been recommended and has been reliable I see so I'm looking at one of those, but I'm just a little confused about how to capture to an external drive if I only have one FW400 port. I'll use the FW400 to capture video from the camera. But to get it to the external drive, does that mean I have to purchase a USB 2.0 external drive for my MBP 15"? What are my options to have an optimized performing system? Anybody with a MBP15 out there with the ideal setup for running FCP with an external drive (corporate video work, 2GHZ, 2G RAM) and how best to optimize it?
    Thanks.

quick clarification please? After some research I've netted it down to this...
For optimum speed when video editing, I'll can utilize FW800 support using my ExpressCard/34 slot:
Get an eSATA drive(Seagate 500mb? however no FW connect ports on it? some have FW400 and FW800 ports I understand?)
Purchase Express/34 FW800 adapter. This gives me optimum external drive transfer speed into my MBP.
Connect eSATA drive to adapter and I have FW800 external drive capability.
My camera is limited to FW400 for output so I can use my FW400 port to capture through to the faster external drive. Caputuring will always be limited to FW400 anyway (by camera default), however I will take advantage of FW800 external connection when editing the digitized captured material.
I think I got it! Any compatibility problems I should be aware of specifically? Brands? Sounds like a good reliable setup. However, no EC/34 dealers up in here in Canada yet. Any internet recommendations?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Windows on external drive

recently I have stumbled upon installing 10.7 lion on external drive:
+Playing with partitions is not for the faint of heart. Installing OS X Lion to a USB drive or external hard drive is a safer but likely slower option.+
Q1: Is it possible to do so with windows?
I would like to install windows on external drive and use it only when needed (hardly ever, but sometimes I have to)
    virtualization is not fast enough for me :{
I have a MacBook Air and SuperDrive, however when I plug superdrive there is no place for external drive,
Q2: Unless I use some kind of usb hub?
Q3: Will it work? Have anyone tried this?

    Hi,
OSX could be installed and run from external harddisk for quite some time.
Sadly, Microsoft choosed to not allow Windows to be installed and run from external harddisk.
However, you can find instructions on how-to do this nonetheless on the internet.
A good USB-hub (preferably one that is self-powered and not USB-powered) will let you use both the Superdrive and an external harddisk at the same time.

  • Lion and external disk freeze/erase

    Using a 2008 MacPro 32 GB RAM LION 10,7,2
I have had a LOT of screen freezing issue with lion and external drive acces.
The worse was lion ERASING the fat of all external 1Tb Fat32 formated e-Sata drives, then freeze and grey screen with critical error.
No more access to the disk after need to reformat them !!! Using a Tempo E4S pci-e card
It was the that with EVERY Fat32 e-sata 1Tb drives I tryed ... Frightening ! hopefully it was some extra backup disks !!!
plus at least one freez a day when I do access external HFS+ e-sata drive USB3 drives...
    ennoying
    really ennoying

Got the exact same problem, and I also did this operation many times before, from 500Gb to 750Gb, and then from 750Gb to 1 Gb. Not My HD got a little such complaining about bad sectors when in windows bootcamp, but still runs fine though.
So I bought a new 1Gb drive exactly same drive as the one thats getting sick. I did the clone thing, with super duper, CCC, DU, but no matter it will not boot when i move the new drive inside the macbook…….**** thing exuse me, but wasted so much time.
Now I get this strange feeling that something must have changed in the macbook itself. Just wondering if this could be a EFI "mac bios" prevention thing, they made just to sell more new computers, when you can't improve or fix your old one.
If so, then its pretty scary. If not then I simply can't figure out why this suddenly becomes a problem for so many people, as I see so many posts about this!!

  • Error when using 2nd external drive

When I went to use Time machine on a 2nd external drive the following error came up:
+You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file “.0016cba062f1” in folder “Backup”.+
I rebooted and then erased the drive and redid the time machine backup, but now the 1st drive has the same error when trying to reassign as the TM backup. I have successfully done this a few times in the past, but no go today.
Anyone have any ideas on what to do with this? Thanks.

this is a bug introduced by 10.5.6 update. see this thread for a workaround.

  • Time Machine external drive not displayed in Migration Assistant

I have been suffering repeated lockups with my iMac, so I decided to bite the bullet and reformat the drive and restore from a Time Machine backup. I have been backing up to an external USB drive, not a Time Capsule. It seemed to be working fine and I have successfully restored the occasional file. However, having reinstalled Lion, the external drive was not offered as a possible source for restoration. Similarly, having chosen not to restore during reinstallation, I attempted to use the Migration Assistant: once again the external drive was not offered as a source. Luckily, I also had an up-to-date cloned drive that was offered and I managed a successful restore.
Can anyone explain why the external drive was not available as a legitimate source? Must I always use a Time Capsule for a full recovery?

    It seems that
in order for Mac OS X to realize that it's a Time Machine drive, there should be an invisible "flag file" (0 bytes in size) at the root of the drive, called com.apple.timemachine.supported - if this file is missing for some reason, Migration Assistant won't pick it up.
not sure that it's true but worth trying.

  • Firewire incompatibility w Video and external drive

I recently purchased an iMac G5 for video editing and wanted to use my external drive mainly to store my iMovie projects. Obviously the video camera and the external drive are disturbing each other that much, that the external drive stops working when I am capturing video on the internal drive. Capturing directly on the external drive did not work anyway; daisy-chaining camera and drive neither.
Following configuration: iMac G5 2 GHZ, 20 " screen, 2GB RAM, OS 10.4.1, LaCie 250GB external drive with FW 800 and 400 (done firmware upgrade on this drive); Canon MV 750i.
Any help would be really appreciated!

The external drive is formatted MacOS extended.
Of course I don't have to transfer large files simultaneously, but it would be nice not to have to capture everything to the internal drive first and then transfer it to the external drive.
Moreover, there are situations where it is not easy to disconnect the external drive each time the cam is connected and turned on. For example, I am working on an iMovie project located on the external hard drive, find a clip archived in FootTrack that I want to add. To import this clip I have to capture it from the camera. Now I have to close the project, disconnect the external drive, capture the clip (assuming the FootTrack archive is on the external drive I have to close FootTrack and can't control if I am really importing the right clip), disconnect the camera, reconnect the external disk transfer it and import it into iMovie...... done!
Better than nothing, but not exactly how one imagines to work.

  • External Drive HELP ASAP

Why wont my hard drive show? did it crash? or can i recover it.? it is still on warrenty.

    Hi demarial;
Maybe in the future you will backup important data!
If your use of Tech Tool Pro does yield the results you need, you might consider download a demo copy of FileSalvage. After running the demo it will tell you what it can recover then you have to pay for it to actually recover the files for you.
