Lion or Snow Leopard for MacBook 3.1

Hi.
I just want a few opinions on whether its worth putting Lion on my MacBook and iMac.
I have two 2007 Macs, a MacBook 3.1 2.2Ghz 4Gb Ram with SSD and an iMac 7.1 2.4Ghz 4Gb Ram Core2Duo machines. I upgraded at the time to Snow Leopard from 10.5 and then kept them on that as they run CS5 fine for my needs. The company I work for has kept our Mac Pro's on 10.6 still as well so it's been kind of handy in that repect.
Recently I've been thinking I should maybe put Lion on so they are more up to date. I know they'll both run it (the iMac will even take ML) I'm just concerned about any speed impact this will have?
I know they're old machines, but they run Snow Leopard great and are not slow. Just want to gather opinions on whether I should or shouldn't put lion on from people that have run it on these machines?
Many thanks

Something to consider when upgrading to either Lion or Mountain Lion.
If the startup disk needs repairing or you need to restore OS X, that requires the built-in utilities in OS X Recovery
Apple does recommend a high speed broandband internet connection for that.
Lion requires 7GB of disk space, Mountain Lion 8GB.
4GB's of RAM would be sufficient for both.
Good user tips to read for both Lion and Mountain Lion ...

Original install disks may be obtained from Apple.  Give them a call and be prepared to give them the serial number of your MBP.  There is a charge.
    Ciao.

In addition to what Kappy suggested, please check your Mac against the hardware requirements of Lion before starting this project.

I have Snow Leopard on my imac and attempted to use i-chat with someone who has Mt Lion. An error message was given and no connection could be made.
Is this due to incompatibiity between the different OSs? If not what are possible causes and remedies????

  • Quick poll: Lion vs Snow Leopard for FCS

    What is everyone using?
I've nothing but trouble with FCS since upgrading to Lion and I want to go back to Snow Leopard.
What will I lose out on? iCloud? Anything else?

What will I lose out on? iCloud? Anything else?
You'll only be "losing out" if you believe iCloud is a step forward.
If you are running FCP on an older machine, I don't see any compelling reason to be on 10.7.
The only reason I can imagine for running 10.7 at the moment is if I picked up a new machine that would not allow me to install 10.6.8.

  • Snow leopard for Macbook 10.5.8?

I have a 2008 Macbook 10.5.8 and i want to install Snow Leopard. Is it possible?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Of course. You can buy it at the Apple Online Store > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After buying the DVD, make a backup of your data, because if the upgrade fails, you will lose everything. Then, insert the DVD and upgrade your computer to Snow Leopard. The DVD contains Mac OS X 10.6.3 so, after upgrading, open  > Software Update to install Mac OS X 10.6.8, the most recent Snow Leopard version

  • Downgrade Lion to snow leopard in macbook air late 2010?

Please, is there anyway to do this, lion its just too slow, and my battery drains faster in lion.
i am totally dissapointed of upgrading to lion, can someone help downgrading?
    Regards.

Sure there is an original USB stick. It came inserted in a white card with the rest of the documentation, neatly packaged in a black cover. On the card it is called Macbook Air Software Reinstall Drive and on the back of the card it is noted "This USB flash drive contains a backup copy of your Macbook Air software ... To reinstall MAC OS X ..." The stick is needed for MBAs because they don't have a DVD drive.
Erasing the disk: I meant erasing the internal SSD drive in my MBA.
iMac reinstall: I used the grey DVD that came with that machine (which does have a drive that will take it).
Apple Mail etc. I have a TimeMachine backup so I was eventually able to restore the mail AS IT WAS ON SEPT 1 when I installed Lion. However, it took many hours because the Library folder was "missing". I am a complete MAC novice so it took a while to figure it all out. My situation is that I have 2 drives in my iMac, an 250 Gb SSD and a 1 Tb normal drive. I had set up the User folder on the normal drive, but the OS on the SSD. When I upgraded to Lion this was kept, but the Library folder was hidden. After my fresh reinstall of SL on the SSD, I again moved my home folder to the normal drive, but Library still was not accessible. I tried unhiding it using "mv .Library Library" from Terminal, without success. I then renamed it to LibraryOld and copied its contents to a temp directory for easier access (you can reach this hidden folder starting from the home folder in Finder and going to Go, Go to Folder. I subsequently restored my last SL "Library" using Time Machine. That gave me my slightly old mail back. What a hassle and waste of time.
As to the MBA. Because I had messed it up so much, all I could do was reinstall Lion on it (from Apple Shop). That proved that the SSD drive was not harmed in any way. I then held the alt key when booting and tried the TimeMachine backup on the NAS (which is only reachable as part of this restore operation, not from within Lion). This worked, but I haven't played around with it yet to see if everything is back to normal.

  • HT201364 Why can't I upgrade to Lion or Mt. Lion (from Snow Leopard) - older MacBook but adequate processor, HD space and 4GB of RAM?

Many applications appear to require newer OS, which I get, but what is the technical reason (other than performance) that the newer OS won't run on the older albeit capable machines?  I don't want to upgrade hardware, but...
So is there a work around or not (advisable?)???

Thanks, but at the risk of sounding like one of my kids...  WHY?
I read your link provided - thankyou!  But still a bit perplexed because of my configuration seems to match the minimum requirements indicated:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook3,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB31.008E.B02
      SMC Version (system):          1.24f3
      Serial Number (system):          W8******0HC
      Hardware UUID:
      Sudden Motion Sensor:
      State:          Enabled
But the upgrade scan tool must be picking up some other limitation.  I guess I'll need to ask one of the "Genius Bar" at the local Apple store.
    Thanks again!

  • Upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

im pretty sure i have a very old software version for my macbook pro, how do i buy or download os x mountain lion or snow leopard?sof

Make sure you read the system requirements. Also install Rosetta if you want Power PC applications to run.
    Snow Leopard Purchase
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Hi JoeyR.  Well, according to this link at the Apple Store, OS X Moutain Lion became available in July and I downloaded it for $19.99.  I figured I would do that before renewing my Norton security SW.  Are we talking about the same thing?

  • Do I have to get a hard copy of Snow Leopard for my iMac if I already have it for my MacBook?

I have Leopard on my iMac, and Snow Leopard on my MacBook (both with all available updates)~I tried to use the Snow Leopard Install DVD from the MacBook to upgrade the iMac, but it said "Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer."  Why???  Do I have to get a hard copy of Snow Leopard for my iMac?  Are there different upgrades for the iMac vs. MacBook?
I think I understand that once I have both computers on Snow Leopard, the Lion upgrade would be ONE upgrade for BOTH computers {I'm guessing I would need the client version for at home use}.  Also, once Lion was on one computer, would I just go into the Mac App store on the other one and download the upgrade on the other one?  But no additional fee would be charged?  Lastly, I read about the combo option that includes all updates to Lion since it's release~would that be the main Lion upgrade on the Mac App or would I have to search for it?
    Thanks for your help!

The disc you used would have been the install disc that came with your Mac. These can only be used on that as they are made for that specific model.
Make sure your machine meets requirements
Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
    At least 2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later (Mac OS X 10.6.8 is recommended)
7 GB of free hard drive space is recommended
Once you've purchased it would be a good idea to create a bootable DVD or USB

  • Running Lion and Snow Leopard on the same MacBook Pro

So here's the thing .....apparently Lion won't run Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 (which I'm quite happy with and not about to shell out silly amounts of money to Adobe for even CS3) and apparently there may be (and I stress may be) problems with Word 2008 (likewise money to Microsoft for Word 2011).
I think, and probably won't know till I've installed it, that I'd like to try Lion on my Macbook Pro but keep Snow Leopard as a separate OS to run Photoshop, Illustrator and if necessary Word until I can afford to pay Adobe (& possibly Microsoft though I can't really see what improvements they can make to Word 2008) the large amounts of money they seem to think they deserve for an upgrade.
Does anybody out there know if it is possible to run both Lion and Snow Leopard on the same machine and if it is how do I do it?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Snow Leopard on MacBook 2008 to Lion OSX

    Hi,
I have snow leopard on macbook 2008 and I would like to update my mac to lion osx. Currently I have found only mountain lion osx on apple store, not lion osx. Mountain Lion is not sipported for early 2008 MacBook (as my macbook is) and Lion osx seems not available any more.
How can I update my Mac to Lion?
