Lion OS X 10.7.3 and printing

I have a new MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, (2 weeks) and when I first got it, I was able to print on two of our printers, but after I upgraded to 10.7.3, I can no longer print. It just sits there and acts like it is spooling to the printer, but never does anything. We have two Canon Pixma printers: ip4000 & ip4600, and a Brother HL-2240D laser printer I tried deleting one printer to re-add it, but now I can't get the software--it says "Unable to download the software from the server at this time." I print through a network, which I don't really understand, but the ip4000 and the laser printer worked until Lion 10.7.3. Please help!! Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

You could try a reset of the printing system. This will remove the two Canon's and the Brother from Print & Scan but not the supporting drivers. So you will only have to add them via Print & Scan again.
When you select to add them again, if you get the same issue with the Mac trying to download the drivers, even though they already exist on the Mac, then we could try removing the folders where the drivers are saved to see if that helps.

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • How do I set a default page size, orientation, and printer for a particular document in Pages?

I have a simple label document in Pages which I print to my label printer. The label is 1.49 x 3.47 inches and needs to print in Landscape, and it needs to print to my Dymo label printer. How do I set up the Page Setup or Print Setup so it defaults to this document size, orientation, and printer, every time, without me having to manually enter those settings every time?

Thank you for your reply. However, I could not get Templates to work correctly for me.  Following your instructions, I opened my document, opened Page Setup, set the printer, paper size, orientation, and printed a copy to make sure it was right. Then I re-opened Page Setup to verify that the settings were still correct. Then I saved the document as a Template. Then I found my template in Pages, opened the template, and tried to print. The first thing I noticed was that the template did not remember my printer. Then I set the printer, and printed, but I found that the template also did not remember the page size or the document orientation. So, did I miss a step here? Lion 10.7.5 and Mac Mini.

  • Macbook Pro w/ Lion 10.7.2 & Windows 7 Shared Printer (Lexmark X5650)

I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro with Lion OS 10.7.2 for my wife and have been trying to connect her Macbook to my Lexmark X5650 Printer that is connected to my Windows 7 Professional PC.  Tried everything with no success.  Any ideas?  I have always been a PC user and this is my first MAC and really know nothing about them.  Wife had to have it for Dental School and I am getting very frustrated
List of things I've tried thus far:
    -Installing printer using CUPS
         smb://server/Lexmark
         smb://workgroup/server/Lexmark
         smb://username:password@server/Lexmark
         smb://username:password@workgroup/server/Lexmark
where the server is I have tried using both the IP Address and Computer Name of the shared Printer
-Installing printer using "Advanced" options under "Print & Scan" to which I used the address settings as above
-Tried the LPD setting as well as just setting it straight up by selecting "Windows" under "Print & Scan", selected workgroup, computer name, and printer and everything appeared to install correctly until attempting to print test page
-Printer is shared on Windows PC
-Even tried creating an Administrative User and Password specifically for Printing
-Made sure I had the latest MAC Driver for the Printer
I have pretty much tried every setting and suggestion that can be found on google and always get the "Authentication Required" error or nothing at all printing just pauses.   When I click resume and enter in the username and password for my windows pc, it says that its sending the job, but then nothing happens and also whenever I try to print another test page after that, I have to constantly click resume and enter the username and password manually regardless of how I set it up.
Is this a printer compatibility issue, is this an issue with Mac OS 10.7.2 (Lion) w/ Windows 7 or what?  Every thread that I have read does not appear to have any responses from Apple with a workaround or any kind of explanation.  All that I have come across is that most people had no problems printing through shared Windows 7 printers until they upgrade to Mac Lion OS.

The "Authentication Required" error can be related to the print driver. Many vendors create their OS X drivers for direct communication from the Mac to the printer. As soon as you stick a Windows computer or 3rd party print server in between the Mac and the printer, then you can get this error.
The thing to note is that when you added the printer via the Add Printer > Windows pane, vs CUPS or the Advanced SMB, you would have been prompted for your Windows credentials to see the printer share after selecting the Win7 computer name. If entering these details then showed you the shared printer, this rules out the problem being related to authentication information.
Working on the premise that the error is being caused by the driver then there are other driver options for OS X, such as Gutenprint. However, looking through the supported driver list for Gutenprint v5.2.7, there is not that many Lexmark printers and certainly not the X5650. And looking at other driver packages available for OS X, I cannot see this model so you may need to look at other options.
One option is LPD which you have tried already. But I think this would have failed due to the service not running by default on Windows 7. While it is certainly present on Win7 for you to connect to a network printer using LPD, the service so that other computers can print via Win7 using LPD has to be enabled. This is done via Control Panel > Programs & Features > Turn Windows Features ON/OFF > Print & Document Services > LPD Print Service. With this enabled and running (you can check via Services) then the queue should be created in OS X using a syntax of lpd://ip_address/printer_share_name. Note that no authentication is required and if the driver will support this type of connection then it could be a quick win. But again the driver could be the issue, although I believe you will see a different error if it has an issue with this type of network connection.
So another workaround is detailed in this blog. This allows you to use the vendors driver on the Mac but I have to say that I have not tried this with Lion and Win7. My last test with this setup was with Win XP and Snow Leopard.
What may prove to be the easiest win is to purchase a Airport Express. With the printer connected to the USB port of this wireless device, the Mac can use the Lexmark driver and Win7 should have no problems printing to it either, although it would be handy to install the free Bonjour for Windows utility to help with locating the printer.
Hope this helps and please respond if you need any further information/assistance.

  • How do i copy and print groups from my address book?

How do I copy and print groups(with contact information) from address book? I want to copy a group of contacts in list form that ideally I can paste into Excel.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking.  If you are coming from pre-Mountain Lion, then Address Book has changed to Contacts.
    Open Contacts.
Select an Account in the group list, if you want the contact in a specific group. If Groups aren't showing, you can display them from the View menu.
Click the Add card button ( + ).
Enter the information for the contact.
If you need multiple entries for a particular field type, a new blank entry will show up below the one you are adding.
If you need other fields, use the Card menu to Add a new field type.
If you want to change the default fields available when you create a new card, choose Edit Template…
If you have sent emails to someone and you want to get that address to add to a Contact, use the Previous Recipients command in the View menu in Mail.
If you need to add a new Group, hover the cursor over the account name, and a + button will appear. Click it.

  • Monitor and Printer Calibration

I am running a MacPro 4.1 (early 2009).  I have older monitor and printer hardware and their related software. Unfortunately, the software will not run because the Mac will not run PPC software.  The software has both PC and Mac versions on the CDs. I originally ran these on a PC before switching to Mac. It appears that the manufacturer does not have new or updated software to enable these devices to run on the MacPro, and a Google search has not revealed any other devices that will run on this machine.
My question: Is anyone aware of any new such hardware with software that will run on this Mac?

Check out the blog and topic articles index, and the sections on Lion, RAID, and other issues, plus at the top, "Cloning as Backup Strategy"
    http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2011/20110915_2-LionFullScreen.html
No Mac Pro should be without redundant systems and backup methods.
Definitely not TimeMachine alone, and definitely not when moving to a new OS.
Backup now. Clone you drive. Or just get a new system drive - you will want and need a new OS drive and a backup drive for SL TimeMachine with at minimum room partition set aside for clone.
WD Green 1.5TB $109 makes a good size for both but it is always best to have separate drives / separate backup sets.
Install OS X 10.6.3 and update.
As for "old Sl FILES" you mean your old data? other than Apple Mail and some prefs, should all be the same. And keep your data files off of and on their OWC "data media drive(s)" or something if you don't already, and that makes sense to you. OS / Apps on one, media and projects on 2-3 drives, some external backup drives.
And keep anything you download. Updates, installers, programs, whatever.
Ask Lion Community. There were/are changes in what and how TimeMachine Lion works.
I personally never really had a good warm fuzzy feel about TimeMachine, especially when it was pushed out in "1.0" form in 2007 and had so many bugs and problems even in 10.5.2.
A lack of configuration options and preferences; why do I need to use 3rd party to configure Apple's? So I stick mostly with other programs. To clone, to make backups and archives, to synch.

  • Faint colors and print

Is there a way to make the colors and print in the new Lion ical less faint??
    Perry

I found this post looking for information on the same problem.  Screen angle doesn't help.  Enhance contrast in Universal Access makes the typeface show up better but it also makes all the colors disappear completely.  In Display/Color calibration, when I messed around with that fortunately it made it a different profile because although it looked better in the calibration process the appearance after applying it was all wrong--washed out--so I just went back to the standard profile.
This has been an issue since I got this computer in 2007 so with Tiger, Leopard, and Sn L as well.  But more pronounced in Lion.  iCal, also other applications, like the gridlines in Numbers.  Too faint for my aging eyes.

  • Why does Pages ask me to save changes when I only open a file and print it?

I have documents that I open regularly but only want to print (and not make changes to).  But, even if I open them and do nothing other than print them, Pages prompts me to save changes when I close the file.  Why is this?
If I've had the document open for a while, I'm always concerned that maybe I've made changes that I want to save and forgotten.

But it always, always, always ignores it, fruhulda. That's what I'm saying. A brand new document on a brand new computer with a fresh install of iwork, and the same thing happens. Every time I open it and print--Do you want to Save? Do you want to Save?
For instance, I have a contract form I use regularly and I get that every.single.time even though I always use the same printer, and have hardly ever used the printer that pages has chosen as my default printer (a medium format inkjet with archival ink that costs far too much to use for things like correspondence). It is not my default printer in OS X, incidentally. No matter how many times I tell Pages to save the information about the printer, it will not. And I also get the same nag on the rare occasions when I do use the printer that pages has chosen (usually by mistake because I forgot to change it in the print dialog).
Perhaps this is a localization-specific bug and that's why you don't see it.
EDIT And most oddly, it happens just the same in lion with the current version of pages, which I would have thought should have autosaved that change without asking me about it.
