Lion OS X automatically opens excel/word upon start-up?

I recently upgraded to lion OS X  Seems now when I start up my iMac the MSOffice apps open automatically.  For instance when Excel opens the first pop up says cannot open file due to corrupt file or extension.  Is there a reset available for this?

This is likely to be OS X Lion's 'Resume' feature.
Firstly make sure that none of the MSOffice apps are open when you shutdown or restart and also deselect 'Reopen windows when logging back in' when this window is presented:
Also you could 'untick' this setting: System Preferences>General> 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps'.

    HELP!
I have run a search on google to solve the problem but the solutions appeared far too 'techie'.
I can follow reasonable guidance but was lost even reading their proposed solution.
    Any guidance much appreciated.

I am using Microsoft Office 2008.
I used the Activity monitor to read System Memory to determine how much RAM is being used:
    In response to your Questions:
Total Memory in the Mac = 4 GB
Free (Green) = 1.41 GB (1 third of the pie)
    Wired (Red) = 733.7 MB
    Active (Yellow) = 1.64 GB
    Inactive (Blue) = 232.6 MB
    Used = 2.58 GB
    Page Outs = 0 bytes (0 bytes / sec)
    Swap used = 0 bytes
Does anyone have any solutions now I have provided a bit more information?
Thank you, I can't function without being able to access word & excel.
    Reinstall Office 2008.

  • How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?

Being a relatively new Mac User, I haven't yet figured out how to associate programs with particular file types.
How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?
    Thanks.

    Hello Argelius
If you select a word file in the Finder and do File>Get Info you will see a section in there where you can specify which application should be used to open files of that type.

  • Automatically open excel spreadsheets with numbers

can anyone tell me is it possible to set numbers as the default application to ALWAYS open excel spreadsheets? each time i try to open an excel spreadsheet the computer starts up the trial office software. I then have to cancel and choose "open with" and then set "always open with" numbers.
Having just converted from Windows, I was able to set certain programs to always handle specific file formats, e.g. .jpg, mpeg, avi so I did not have to choose the program every single time i wanted to open a file.
thx., same goes for pages ,in lieu of word?

Select an Excel file and option-select (Right Mouse Button) and select Get "Info". See attachment below to set "Open With."

  • Upgraded to OS2, can't open excel, word documents

I just upgraded to OS2 and now my playbook will no longer open my word or excel files.  They worked just fine with the older OS
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have successfully narrowed down, but not solved the problem. I have a large number of old files with commas in the file name. At first I thought it was the age of the file (created with Word 2000) but copying it to Word 2007 and saving as docx with same name doesn't fix it. Turns out you can't have a comma in the file name although periods and question marks seem ok.
I can work around this easily by renaming to open these archival docs when I need them, I use Files and Folders for this and browsing.

I received an email that shows a paperclip in my Inbox on my iPhone 3G. How do I open the Excel and Word documents that are attached to the email?

See if this iphone tip and tricks helps:
    Open an attached file:
Tap the attachment. It downloads to iPhone and then opens.
You can view attachments in portrait or landscape orientation. If the format of an attached file isn't supported by iPhone, you can see the name of the file but you can't open it. iPhone supports the following document types:

  • How can I make safari automatically open a word/pdf doc after it has been  downloaded?

If I want to open a pdf or word file in safari, the program just downloads the file to the  map downloaded files. I must then manually find the file and click on it to open. In firefox this happens automatically.  Is it possible to make safari do this?
    Best Per

Safari can view a PDF file without downloading it to the computer.
Word files can not be opened automatically after download.
Check Safari preference / General tab and look at the bottom of the window.

  • Docx does not automatically open with word

I have selected Microsoft Office as my default reader for docx. I have checked the "do this automatically for files like this from now on" box. Yet I still get the dialog box (with the automatic option checked) when trying to open word docs. I click "okay" and it works fine. However, I want it to open automatically. I have windows 8 and microsoft office 2013.

You can only set an automatic action properly when you save a file that is send by the web server with the correct MIME type for this file, otherwise it will likely fail.<br />
A MIME type as send by the server will always prevail the file extension, so servers need to be configured properly.

  • Lion OS - I cannot open old Word Documents

I have recently installed Lion OS. I can no longer open old versions of Word Documents (.doc) in Office 2011
I have tried to install the Service Packs 14.0 and 14.02 but I get the message that "essential software is missing." I have tried to run Software Update, but "all my software is up to date". I have also tried to re-install Microsoft AutoUpdate (successfully). But still no joy....
    What do I do?

Pages 5 will not open Pages '08 files or earlier.
Pages '08/'09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder. Use that.

  • I updated to Firefox 4, and now it won't open Word documents. It doesn't even give me an option to open or save. When I looked under Tools, Applications - Microsoft Word was not in the Content list. What can I do to restore automatic opening of Word?

Word opens fine in other browsers.
The web link, ending in doc, appears at the bottom of the page - but Firefox just stays on the original page.

Ok, when you go to the Content menu, you see a list of files which are set to open with a particular program by default.
To change the application, click the one which is assigned to it already and then from the dropdown menu which appears, click the bottom option called "Use Other".
This will open a menu where you'll see another set of apps you can use to open the file with. If Microsoft Word is not in the list, click the "Browse" button and then navigate to the folder containing Word.exe. I don't have it on my system, but I believe you'll find it in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Word

  • Image automatically opens each time I start Photoshop

Every time I open photoshop, an image I created opens with it.  Only one.  I can close it; but it reappears every time I open the program.  How can I delete it permanently?

    Hi,
What operating system and version of photoshop are you using?
It sounds like the recovery file from a photoshop crash is opening.
If your using tabs in photoshop and after the image opens, you should be able to right click on the tab and choose either Reveal in Explorer or Reveal in Finder
and then delete the file from the folder that opens.
