Lion OSX major network issue with MacBook but cannot restore from Snow Leopard disk - help!

I have a network with an airport extreme with two expresses and a time capsule extending the network.  The network has a Mac, apple TV and two iphones which all connect absolutely fine.  The macbook did too, until I upgraded to 7.6.1 on the airports.  I took the airports back to 7.6 but the Mac simply isn't speaking properly to my extreme.  It drops, speeds up, slows down and works differently in different part of the house.
Been to Genius who said, macbook is fine, try either a completely fresh install on the mac, or reset the network.  The reset of the network hasn't worked, so I wanted to reinstall snow leopard then lion on my mac.  Put the disk in, and it came up with the error can't install the Mac OSX from the install Mac OSX disc.  I have therefore tried the original leopard disks, which simply restart, chime and restart (continuously).
I need some help as this is my work computer and I don't seem to be able to get any help from anyone.
So I need to know the following:
1) Has anyone got any other solutions for the extreme problem (have tried dragging out the preferences but that didn't work either);
2) How do you reinstall an OS from the disk - as this in particular is a nightmare.
3) Anyone able to suggest a work round??
Would be very grateful for assistance.
Thanks

Hello ddownn and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Firstly it will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. That would include the OS and particulars about the Mac Pro.
"this system doesn't beep three times."
The normal diagnosis for that is RAM problems.
"I am able to complete the installation by using the DVD in my Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode with a FireWire cable"
But that shouldn't work because the install (build) would be particular to the Mac Pro.
"I recently installed a new HDD and formatted it from a Mac Pro via Target Disk Mode."
Partitioned to GUID?
"disk spins up and stops about three times, then ejects and a folder icon with a question mark appears"
These DVD drives in these old laptops can often go bad. Try this:

I'm having a lot of issues with firefox and cannot figure out how to get help. It began when I updated to 13. I get all kinds of ad popups, I cannot play one game on FaceBook called Farm Town at all, and I keep getting an AVG popup about cookies that I cannot get rid of. These issues are causing me to use Chrome very often even though I like Fox better. I've searched and searched how to get help and cannot find anything. How does one get personal technical help?? These issues do not happen in Chrome at all. Thanks.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • Networking issues with MacBook Pro

I have tried to find this issue on line and in the forums and couldn't   I have seen many people have similar issues using VPN connections or Citrix but nothing what I am seeing.  I have 3 MacBook Pros that connect fine to our company network.  They have the DNS settings from our DHCP server and I can see their leases and everything.  We can connect to network drives however we can't connect any of them to the company's intranet sites.  If we type in http://companysite  and hit enter both Safari and Firefox come back stating that they can't find the server companysite.  Not sure why it is looking for a server by the name of companysite when our DNS servers point to the servers that are hosting the sites.
If I type in the IP address of any company site then it works however using the name doesn't.  So it sounds like an issue with DNS but again the DNS servers are in the network settings and Windows machines have no issues with using the http://companysite instead of using http://IP Address.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

OK, figured out that if I added my company's domain to the search domain list in Network Settings this would allow the MacBook to use http://companysite instead of the IP Address.  However now I need to figure out the authentication issue.  We use the end user's network credentials for access to the company intranet sites.  Using http://companysite I get access denied.  Using the IP address allows the end user to enter in their network credentials.

  • My macbook won't read the snow leopard disk but my macbook pro does...why?

For better or worse I ran a clean install of the original MacBook OS for an early 2008.  It had been running Lion over the years it had never been wiped and reinstalled.  In any case, I successfully reinstalled 10.5.2 with the start up disks that came with the machine when we purchased it.  (That showed me the drive was operational.)  I then attempted to install Snow Leopard with the install disk we've kept and the drive rejected it; however the MacBook Pro's drive did not reject it.  (That showed me the disk is operational as well.)
Is the problem as simple as having to update Leopard to the max before the drive will accept the Snow Leopard disk?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC; then, try again. BTW, does the optical drive show up in Apple menu item->About this Mac->More info?

  • Issues with Adobe CS and Permissions in Snow Leopard

    Me: Model: iMac7,1, BootROM IM71.007A.B03, 2 processors, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz, 3 GB, SMC 1.21f4
Running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (I know time to upgrade)
Also related to this I'm using Adobe Creative Suite 5 (Indesign 7)
So it started a couple of days ago when I noticed my external HD was locked on my home computer...Firefox can't update and then Photoshop tells me it can't save preferences and InDesign tells me it can't open (unexpectedly quits when opening). Uh oh.
I've used Adobe Cleaner to try and solve the issue along with multiple uninstalls/installs of Adobe Creative Suite. And so I've narrowed this down to a permissions issue (I believe it happened when I was trying to share my external HD to our Boxee).
I downloaded Batchmod to see if that would work and i managed to unlock the external HD but no luck yet for Adobe CS. I tried unlocking all the preferences in user/library/preferences and that worked (still locked but not grayed out) but user/applications and manged is still grayed out with custom access. And I'm sure there's other folders hiding that need to be unlocked.
Is there a blanket command for terminal to unlock everything? I know using * in Terminal could work but where do I start?

Started having issues with accessing camera raw from bridge. I have CS6 and LR5. Should I attempt to uninstall CS6 and reinstall. I have backup on external hard drive for my photos but will I need to reimport photos after uninstall? Some of the forums are suggesting that my program might be corrupt. Can anyone assist?

  • Issues with Bluetooth/Wireless Mighty Mouse since Snow Leopard Install

    Hi,
I am having issues with my bluetooth wireless mighty mouse. It was fine after initially having installed Snow Leopard. However, in the past week it has become progressively more and more unresponsive. It functions perfectly normal for the first while after startup, then after a short period of time it becomes slow to respond to the mouse movements that move the cursor. Eventually it gets to the point that moving the mouse results in no cursor movement whatsoever. It also becomes unresponsive to squeezing the side buttons. There are no issues with clicking or scrolling with the track ball.
I have searched the discussion forums to find issues that pertain to "bluetooth" and "wireless mighty mouse" and have tried the following suggested remedies... Repairing my Mouse with my Mac mini. Renaming my mouse. Deleting the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from Macintosh HD\Library\Preferences and restarting my Mac. Reset PRAM and NVRAM. Also tried to install Bluetooth Firmware update 2.0.1 but I get an indication that the update is not needed on my Mac mini. I have also checked for software updates but there are none...
I am going to attempt resetting the SMC but am doubtful that this will help...
    Can anyone help... Please... ?
    Thanks,
    Des

I had read in another forum where someone had an understanding that the bluetooth problem had something to do with Airport/Time Capsule. I had also read about how someone was having an issue with being unable to turn off airport. (I had this same problem.)
Upon deleting a few airport related plist files (see below url) I was able to turn off/on airport AND my Mouse issue has no longer appeared... everything is working a-ok now.

  • Getting a Sharp AR-405 with AR-PB2A to print from Snow Leopard

I made this work, and thought I'd share (after not being able to, and going over these boards).
Maybe I can help someone else...
Backstory: This is $12,000 printer circa 1999/2000, and not so easily replaced off the shelf! The AR-PB2A is a networking box attached to the machine that allows it to use several protocols, and adds features. It has a parallel port as well.
I'd gotten a new MBP 2 months ago with OSX 10.5.6 (to start the move from OS9) and thought I'd die when it wouldn't print (but the gimp folks helped out). Sharp no longer supports this model, and judging by the printer list from Apple, they don't support this OS either. Last week, we added an imac, which came pre-loaded with Snow Leopard.
Imagine my horror on the "no appletalk" issue!
Long-term, printer-sharing isn't going to cut it. This printer may outlast a few system revisions yet.
After many restarts, and crashing the printer dozens of times, here's what works.
All you need is a PPD file that works from an earlier system.
This works for both 10.5.8--10.6.1 ... it may work on earlier OS X versions. It may help for other Sharp AR series printers of this vintage.
    1. Go to the printer interface, and set the printer's IP number if it hasn't already been set. Refer to the AR-PB2A manual if you need to figure out how to get to the right panel and what I type below makes no sense:
A.If the printer is online, toggle the button to OFFLINE.Click the "MENU" button on the lower right. Navigate to TCP/IP settings.
B.Make sure the printer's IP number is set to your LAN network (ie 192.168.1.xx)
Pick that last number to be one not already used on your network/LAN.
    C.Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
    D.**Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
E.Close the settings panels, and shut off the printer and let it sit a couple minutes, then restart.
** -ROUTER address actually. Not being a network guru, this alternative terminology stumped me for awhile
2.Print a NIC page (startup page with the network info on it). If it doesn't auto-print one on startup, go into the printer's panels and either set it to print or tell it to do so now. (Default PW for the "key operator" thing in case you're interested is 00000. If it's been changed, you'll need to know what it was changed to.)
My printer was never set to be on TCP/IP network, we only recently were able to migrate to DSL, router etc. (We left the appletalk settings intact, and the appletalk-capable machines still print to it fine.)
    3. When the machine is up and running again, try to access it with a web browser. Just type in the IP # of the machine into your browser. It should bring up a web page. If not, check the IP to be sure it's correct. This will help verify that the printer is accessible.
If you are successful, you'll be presented with some settings pages. Here you can poke around and see all what you can change (including the IP#).
    4. HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART:
The default PORT is 10001. CUPS wants to default to port 631. You can't set this printer's port to 631 (but you can set it between 10001 and 6xxxx). Just leave it. This port number will be shown at the bottom of the NIC printout page, under
    "TCP/IP Connection Information
    Port Number : 10001"
If you need or wish to change any settings via the web access pages, you'll need a PW. For this particular model, default is "sysadm". There is no place to input a user name, so other "default Sharp" pw's don't work Although, they may work for other sharp models.
    5. Now the big fun:
System Prefs > Printers & Fax > click the + to add a new printer
Click the IP printer button at the top.
Drop down menu has three options:
    Line Printer Daemon
    Internet Printing Protocol
    HP DirectJet - Socket
    Select HP DIRECTJET-SOCKET
(the other two crashed my printer every time, causing it to be shut off and sometimes the settings completely redone)
In the first line, type in the IP of the printer followed with the port--
    Here's my own example:
    192.168.1.195:10001
If the port number is not there, it will not print.
(be sure to match the IP number to your network and what you set the printer to)
    Leave the next line Blank.
The 3rd line down (Printer Name) starts out with the basic IP number. Give this printer a sensible name here.
Location line: Name it or leave it blank
Drop down menu at the bottom, go look for your PPD file. (if you can't find it now, you can reset it later). It should default to "Generic..."
This will bring up a dialog with a progress bar, you can wait for that to finish or click configure. Set the printer's options regarding memory, trays, duplex module etc.
Click "Add" at the bottom of the panel.
The printer should now show up in your Printers & Fax panel, and be available.
    Try a test print.
Notes: I can't figure out how to rename a printer once it's been set up. If you don't set the name when you add the printer, you won't be able to later (although the unix folks might know the way around that). Otherwise, you'll end up with the IP# as the printer name. If you don't like this, delete and set it up again (naming the printer).
Presently, on this 10.5.8 machine, I have this printer set up to print via AppleTalk and as an IP printer (both are listed printers now). I can print to either one from this machine. But only the IP printer version (via HP JetDirect-Socket) works on the 10.6 machine.
I write this in hopes it helps someone else in some way. Maybe you too can save 10 hours, when it can be done in about 10 minutes (less if your printer is actually in the same room as your computer!) Who knew that "HP JetDirect" would work when the other two more "obvious" choices for a Sharp printer would crash it? Ha!
Now, we're off to get some ancient Epson LQ-570+ online. We've managed to get one to work on 10.5.8 ... and therefore, we are hopeful! Anyone remember PowerPrint LT and the dongles?? Mwah ha ha ha... yes the insanity continues....

  • Network Issues with Macbook Pro Retina will Apple Router solve issues?

Hi, I just purchased a Macbook Pro Retina 15" and have been having major WIFI/Internet issues.  Slow connections, constant spinwheel of death, half loading pages if the website has a lot of images (Facebook, etc).  Sometimes I have to wait a fair bit of time and they may eventually load, or I'll have to close the browser and reload the page.
In the area I live in, Bell offers only Fibe 5.1 (802.11 g/b) at this time.  I wondered if I purchased a separate router with an 802.11n connection (and disabled the router on the 2Wire modem from Bell), would this solve my issues or is Fibe 5.1 just unable to handle the new "n" technology/speed.  I'd like to utilize this computer the way it was meant to be used, but the internet connection that I have leaves much to be desired.  Bell won't be upgrading in my area for at least 6-12 months from what they tell me and I refuse to switch to Robbers (I mean Rogers).

I hate to go into a long rant but you may be able to fix your problem by just changing the channel on your 2wire router  from ma Bell. They all come with the channel set to a default setting of channel 6 change it to 10. If you are in a high traffic area and they are all set on six you see where this is going.  I have a 2 Wire in a high traffic area and I changed mine and it worked like a charm.
    Hope this helps

  • Clipboard issue with Word and Flash CS4 in Snow Leopard

I use Flash CS4/word 2008 on a regular basis and copy text from word into flash. Since I upgraded to SL, I no longer can paste text into Flash. This is a major productivity killer for me. Are there any global clipboard settings?

That indicates corruption or a conflict within the old account, usually with preference (plist) files. Make a list of the preference files inside the /new user/Library/Preferences/ folder, log back into the old account, move the ones on your list to a folder on the desktop, log out and back in, and see if the behavior is fixed. If so, create another folder on the Desktop, copy the new ones to that folder, and slowly replace a few new ones in /old user/Library/Preferences/ with the same ones first moved, until you find which ones were causing the problem. Delete those and replace with their copies. The process is slow, but required.
Alternatively, you could log into the new one, delete the old one, *electing to save its data (creates a disk image in /Users/Deleted Users/)*, recreate the account, using the same username/password combo, log into it, mount the saved data image, and slowly transfer plist files from it to the recreated one, frequently logging out and back in until you find the bad files.
    Good luck.

  • Issue with Close/Minimise/Zoom Buttons in Snow Leopard

    Dear All,
Hope you may be able to help me with a small but really annoying problem.
If I go to click on the "close" button on a window (can be any application) but, for instance, miss slightly and click on the grey area just below or to the side of it, and then click close, the window in fact minimises.
This is a reproducible behaviour but I can't for the life of me figure out why it's happening! I've repaired permissions and so on but to no avail.
The only thing I can think was that I upgraded my copy of Snow from a Snow beta rather than an erase and install - would this cause such behaviour?
    Thanks
    Ryan

  • I backed up TBird with Mozbackup, but cannot restore: I unzipped the PCV file but how do I restore my profile from that?

The unzipped PCV file includes an address file and multiple mail files in plain text.
    What next?

Why do you say "of course"? You didn't tell us what you had or hadn't done, so someone needs to ask.
It would seem that mozbackup didn't make a legitimate "zip archive", or is buggy and doesn't recognize a good zipped archive.
Since you have unzipped it manually, you are now in possession of your old profile, so you could follow the usual steps to reinstate an old profile into a new Thunderbird. Essentially, you copy the contents of the old profile over the contents of the new profile.

  • Delete my win 7 but cannot restore from recovery partition any more

    Hello,
I tried to restore my computer to a fresh install, but instead using the restore to default I pressed the delete all
    so I don't even got a windows.
I install win7 from USB and I can see the TOSHIBARECOVERY partition in the disk management.
How can I restore my computer from this partition to factory mode?
    Is it possible?
I know I can buy the recovery disc from Toshiba, but I bought this computer in the US, and now IM in Israel for the next year, so there is no possible shipping to here. So I would like to download it.
    Thanks,
    Nati

    Hey.
    Same problem here.
I saw something on internet that you either have to have the OS which came with the laptop to do recovery or the DVD for restoring.
Which is huge amount of idiocity.
Why can't the program to make DVD be placed on D drive with the HDD recovery.
And charge that MUCH to get DVD with piece of software that you are supposed to have for free.
Ok shipping and DVD but why can't we select download the recovery ISO instead?
This is just milking MONEY out of customers who accidentaly made a mistake and cannot recover the factory settings.
I see no reason why the recovery DVD can't be put on internet.

  • Is it possible to completely restore from Snow Leopard TimeMachine Backup after a clean Lion install?

    Hello,
I cannot install Lion because my disk cannot be used, so I am planning to do a full, clean install of the system. My question is if it is possible to restore entirely from the TimeMachine backup after that or if it is better to spend time for figuring out how to remove the "this disk cannot be used" message in the lion installer?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

Just a gut feeling, if you are getting "disk cannot be used" errors you need to figure out why first before you try to install something else. Have u run Disk Utility from within the Lion installer? Try that and see if what kindof errors you get there...
But yes, assuming the disk is still in good shape, and you have the SL installer DVD, you should be able to do a reinstall and use the TM backup to get things back into the shape they were in before you tried to install Lion.

  • Can I upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard?

I currently have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard installed.  I'm planning on getting one of the new iMacs as well.  I was considering using the migration assistant to copy user, applications, etc., from my MacBook Pro, to the new iMac.  So I'm thinking that for compatibility purposes, I should NOT wait and get an iMac with Lion, then try to use the migration assistant to migrate from Snow Leopard to Lion.  So please tell me if this plan seems reasonable:
    1. Purchase an iMac now, and use the migration assistant to copy stuff from my laptop.
    2. Then upgrade the laptop and iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion when it's released.
My concern would be whether installed apps are compatible with Lion.
I'm a longtime linux user, and must say I am very impressed with Mac OS X!  I still prefer linux for running server applications, but Mac OS X on the desktop is better than linux AND windows!
    -Thanks

But most important of all: Can it run crysis ? Jokes apart:
I wouldn't get excited about Lion. I can spend hours about making an OS a real "think different" experience.
But since nobody will be paying for that and since many people before me tried hard to make Apple developers understand what to be improved, Apple just trash those suggestions. For Example:
It must have been how many versions of Preview where if you type in a PDF document search a phrase like "I want to Go" the Preview shows each I each Want each To each Go in a PDF. C'mon.
Did you see Spaces in Lion? Was it really necessary to change it? C'mon this is like a psychotic housewife that likes to move furnitures around once in a while until some furniture got broken.
You know when Apple was really different when there weren't any "OMG and I was lik you knoww, really and it was like you knowww yeah cool yeah cool" college girls who know have an apple just to show  off the apple logo on front of their device. Is this the payback for a 1000 $ computer? It's humiliating. Truly. Now if we want to be serious let's be truly serious.
