Lion OSX vs Time Machine on MacBook Pro

I've installed Lion OSX.
Verified the hard drive.  There's enough memory and all is green and fine.
I've started my initial Time Machine backup on Friday afternoon - today is Sunday morning and it is still "Indexing"?
Is it possible that it can take THAT long?

Spotlight was changed for Lion;  changed so much that Lion must create a new index for every disk/partition on your system.   Worse, until it's done, Time Machine backups will run at a crawl, or worse, because the backups also need to be indexed again, but seem to get a lower priority than other drives.
See if the other indexing has completed -- if there's a tiny dot in the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar, click it and see what it's indexing.  Until that's done, your backups will be very slow, if they move at all.  You may be better off to cancel the backup and turn Time Machine OFF until everything else is done.
The first backup will still take a long time, as the TM drive still has to be indexed.

I thought the backup whilst asleep was only used on Mountain Lion.. but perhaps it was also introduced with Lion.. anyway it is only enabled on later firmware.. in latest laptops.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7

  • Time machine on MacBook Pro failing to back up

I have a 5 year old MacBook pro 15.4 which I updated with Mountain Lion about a year ago.  2 weeks ago I updated with Yosemite 10.10.1.  Since then Time Machine fails to back up.  I have excluded the majority of files and apps from the back up as suggested, but still the message is that Time Machine requires 53.21GB but only 22.49.  Can anyone help please?
    Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Using time machine on MacBook Pro

I just bought a MacBook Pro and am not able to use time machine. The AppleCare wireless expert mentioned that I am not able use time machine because I am not hooked up to a hard drive. He also mentioned I would have to purchase time capsule in order to back up my work. Does anyone have any other more affordable suggestions to back up my work other than time capsule? Thanks

Apple is always going to suggest using an Apple Solution to backup you data. In order to use time machine you will need an external hard drive. You can purchase any drive you would like just make sure if you are plugging it directly in to your Mac that it has either USB 2.0 or Firewire 800 connections or both. When you first plug in the device your Mac will ask you if you would like to use the drive for backing up. Select yes and you will be good to go.
    Good Luck.

  • TIME MACHINE ON MACBOOK PRO - when to turn off hard drive

I'm about to begin using Time Machine and have a rather basic question. From what I've read it seems that TM is a round the clock kind of deal: backing up every hour on the hour. I have a MacBook Pro, which I do not keep on all the time. I shut it off every night, and when I'm traveling from location to location. Can I just shut down the external hard drive affiliated with Time Machine every night too, and then start it up in the A.M. with my computer? What happens when I'm traveling away from the external hard drive and the hourly back-up times come up?
    any help is appreciated.
    Rex

I think that if you look closely, you will see that most people with "endless" backup problems are running older machines, with slower processors and older USB/Firewire controllers. No doubt, there are others with more up to date machines that are experiencing problems as well, but I think its less common.
You and I both have MacBook Pros (I have the original one). My backup of the FULL system went quite well, and took less than an hour to an external firewire 400 drive. So I think it would be worth it for you to back-up your whole system.
If you backed up everything, including those system files and the library, then if something did go wrong, the restore process would be much easier. all you would do is boot up from the Leopard DVD, and follow the menus to choose the option to Restore from Time Machine Backup.
(one exception: if you did an Archive and Install vs a clean install of Leopard, you might want to exclude the old system folder)

  • Time Machine Freezes MacBook Pro

For a few weeks now every time I try to back up with Time Machine my entire MacBook Pro freezes up. Is this a common problem, anyone else having this issue?

That sounds like something is corrupted, somewhere.
I'd recommend starting with a +*Repair Disk+* on your backups, and a +*Verify Disk+ on your internal HD, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If still no help, download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget (See #A1 in the same Tip); copy and post the messages from one of these backups here.

  • Time machine backup + MacBook Pro + Selling MP

    All,
I have a MacBook Pro (MP), and would like to back up its files with Time Machine, so I can sell my MP, and transfer the files to my next Mac.
I will be using the Time Machine (TM) software. I have been reading, and saw there is an option to backup on its own MP HD partison!?
All I am trying to do is maximize all resources my MP offers without having to spend the money on an external volume.
    My questions are:
         a) If I backup these files using an internal volume, will I be able to transfer these to my next Mac? Could you provide the steps to backup internally?
         b) Or, will I be better off by backing up using an external volume? If the external volume is a better option, could you provide some "good and cheap (under $120)" options (250GB external should do it)?
    Best, Leo

    Thank you OGELTHORPE and fane_j.
It appears the best route to take is via an external volume as I will first sell my MBP, then buy another one. As I am not so familiar with external HDD and enclosures, it seems enclosures are cheaper and the route I will moslty like take.
My question is: Is it possible for my MBP create backup files with Time Machine via the enclosure? Will that provide the same result as an external HDD?
    Best, Leo

  • Trouble with my time machine and macbook pro

I had my macbook pro's screen repaired because the it kept going black. It was not the video card, but a faulty screen. I just got it home and plugged my time machine into the computer. Now I can't browse any of my old backups on the time machine. It acts as if they were never there. Nothing except for what was just added to the time machine today is there. I live 2 hours away from the closest Apple store and my Apple care plan ended. I work as staff for a business and they need me to be able to browse the backups. The time machine was working perfectly before I had the computer repaired. Is it possible that they changed something on my computer so it doesn't reconize my files? Is there a way that I can change it back or fix this problem myself?
I just called Apple store and they told me that there is basically no way that I will be able to get access to my old files because they changed out something in my computer when they repaired the screen. If you know of any other way that I can still have access to these files let me know! On a PC you can plug an external into any computer and access files. My files are still on my Time Machine. I just can't access them. Please help me.

  • Problem with MyBook Live and Time Machine on MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I bought recently a WD MybookLive 2 tb.
The HD is connected to the modem and make backup from Macbook Pro 15 'with Time Machine.
Previously everything worked correctly, the Mac recognizes the disc and carried outregular backups, everything started to not work after the updates that were released by Apple on November 11 with software update - firmware on the My Book Live theMyBookLive 02.10.09-124: Core F / W
    I get this error:
Time Machine can not complete the backup. The disk backup is not available.
Apart from Time Machine, yes, I use the MyBook Live, I load the disk where you are within the Public folders Shared Music, Shared Pictures, Shared Videos, and Software,I can easily copy files and copy them from there into to my computer - the My Book and'set a DHCP address.

  • Re: TIME MACHINE on MacBook Pro - not backing up automatically

    Hi,
I am new to the forum so I hope someone can help me.
I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. I have a MAXTOR one touch 4 mini 120G EXTERNAL hard drive attached (I brought it before all of the bad comments about maxtor I have read). When I plug it in Time machine recognizes the drive however does not automatically back up. When I select preferences under next back up there is no time just --. I am able to manually backup by selecting "Back up now" from the Time machine icon on the Dock.
Is there something I should be doing?
I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive without success.

    Welcome to the forums.
Not sure I can help, but here are the obvious things to double check. Forgive me if this all seems super obvious, but once you do all these steps, if you are still having problems then we will know that its not something simple. Its always best to eliminate the obvious.
    1) right click Time Machine in the dock, and select "Time Machine Preferences..."
    2) In TM prefs, flip the "big Switch" to OFF.
    3) Click on the "Change Disk..." button. Reselect your Maxtor and click "Use for Backup"
    4) In TM prefs, click on the "Options..." button make sure nothing is excluded (unless you want it excluded). Hit the - minus sign to un-exclude something.
    5) Now turn the Big switch back to on.
    6) Close out of prefs, sit back and wait and prey to whatever higher being you believe in.
NOW if none of that worked for you (give it some time), then your next step is to wipe your Maxtor. Turn off Time Machine (the big switch in prefs) and use Disk Utilities (in /Applications/Utilities/) to Erase your MAxtor drive. Format it as HFS+ (journaled). And on the Erase tab in Disk Utilities, click on the Security Options button, and choose the second choice down to zero your disk. It should say something like "Write zeores".
Once you have completely wiped the drive, and reformatted it as HFS+ journaled, then you should set up Time Machine again (pointing to the the newly formatted disk). Obviously remember to turn Time Machine on with the big switch. As before, the first backup will take awhile. Once it is done with that first back up, restart your mac, and watch it for the next day to see if the problem is fixed.
NOW if that doesn't work, im at a loss.

  • Time Machine on Macbook Pro and on my PowerMac G5 Quad????

Can I have two time machine backups installed on one external hd? Right now I have my time machine backups on my external hd for my macbook pro? but can i back up my g5 on the same hd?

    Hi-
Along with the need for partitioning, there are recommended partition map differences for Intel and PPC Macs; GUID vs. APM.
Time Machine needs lots of space to work well.
I'd get a drive for each machine for peace of mind and avoidance of problems.

I´ve get this error-code when launching Time Machine: An unaspected error has acourd (errorcode -6584)
    Solution on this?

Sounds like OSX has lost track of where it is.  Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 there.
