Lion redownload question

I have Lion o s x on my laptop. My harddrive is full. I bought a new harddrive. Now I need to download Lion to a USB drive and put it on the new harddrive. I went to my purchased apps and it says download. When I hit download, it doesn't download anywhere. What do I do? I need to get the new harddrive installed.

A Core 2 Duo is the minimum processor but not the actual one that's in your computer. It's quite sufficient for Lion. After all the first C2Ds ran at 2.0 GHz and are not nearly as fast as yours. Of greater importance is RAM. 2 GBs is the minimum, but 4 GBs would be much better. More if possible since you also run Fusion.

Your MBP should have been given to you with the original installation disks and OS. The Lion OS is licensed to the person who sold it to you. You will have create your own account and purchase Lion if you wish to use it. Those are the stipulations in the licensing agreements.

New to Mac (Lion USB Questions)

Ok, so I'm completely new to Macs, unless you consider a Mac 2 way back in the day (booted the os to ram from 2 or 3 floppy discs). I recently bought a macbook pro off of ebay that needed a little repair, but works non-the-less. I borrowed a Leapard CD from a friend and installed it. I updated everything as much as I could, and just used it here and there for the past month maybe, just getting use to the interface. The LCD is somewhat messed up, so I haven't used it as a daily device at all. So I logged into iTunes on it for the first time just 2-3 days ago, and apparently there is a security flaw, and my account got hacked and an attempted charge of gift cards to give to some other account were charged to paypal. Luckily, paypal saw the multiple charges for the same thing in less then a minute and automatically put them into dispute (I wasn't charged).
The actual fraud at this point isn't the issue, because I've changed the passwords and security questions for everything attached to iTunes (paypal, email, apple id), so all is secure on that front, and paypal is clearing up the charges as I type this out. The issue is that it happened in the first place. I'm guessing because it's an older version of the OS, it was a security flaw that is known about (since there is a 70 page post somewhere about similar instances), and I'm guessing it's fixed in Lion.
If it is, then I'm wanting to upgrade to Lion and be done with it. I just don't feel safe installing from the app store from an OS that is known to have had an account stolen on it. So, I'd like to install from scratch. I'm planning on installing from the thumbdrive via a physical store location (to impatient to order online at this point ). I'm mainly wanting to know, if I install from the USB device, can I do a full and complete system wipe and still install it from the USB drive without having to install an older OS first, like you do if you install it from the app store?
O-o maybe I should have only asked the questions in the last paragraph, but meh... I'm still furious about my account being stolen in the first month or so on mac os, when I've been using windows for over a decade (on the internet even) and have had no fraud what so ever... At this point, I'm going to just say it's the older OS, and get the newest one, and see. I just want to make sure I don't waste $70 getting the thumbdrive just to have to get Snow leapard to install it. I really don't trust the os I currently have installed, and would like to start from complete scratch.

Yes, you can do a clean install from the flash drive. You can only upgrade from Snow Leopard with the flash drive.
I cannot answer your questions about fraud. We don't know the specifics of what happened to you nor whether this was the result of a security flaw in the OS or elsewhere or simply a failure on your part to maintain the security of your data.

Can't purchase Mountain Lion - security questions

i can't purchase Mountain Lion because i'm given three mandatory security questions, when i only defined ONE (plus date of birth) in my Profiles Security Settings - which was done automatically upon creation of profile, one question, not three.
i've tried going to my Profile and add the required two questions, but that option isn't available.

Lion install questions

Hi, I Have A Couple of questions about installing lion, first can you run snow leopard apps? and second, i have root enabled in snow leopard, onced installed will i have to reenable it? thanks!

If by "snow leopard apps" you mean ppc apps, no you can not run those in Lion. check here for a compatibility list. Not sure about the other question.

Lion Performance Question

My wife's MacBook Pro has the 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM. It currently runs Snow Leopard. We've been using MobileMe to sync the calendar and address book with her iPhone, but that is going away. So if I upgrade the MS Office and VMWare Fusion, we can upgrade to Lion.
My question is whether Lion's performance is adequate on the 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, because that CPU is listed as the minimum CPU for Lion. Snow Leopard runs well and I don't want to upgrade and lose performance. Thanks in advance.

Mountian Lion Updating Question

Hey All!
I own a early 2011 13' Macbook Pro. I started downloading Mountian Lion and upon reading some reviews have decided to postpone installing it until an update is released that fixes some bugs. My question is, If I leave the install in the launchpad (just don't install), when I go to install it after the update, will it install with the newest version? Or will I have to install the old version of Mountian Lion then use software update.

It will install the current version. You would then use the App Store to update it.

Copy the installer to your Downloads folder for safe keeping. You can also make a USB flash drive installer;
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

Several Lion/AD questions

Several questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on apple's KB.
1. When setting up an iphone to synch with the lion server, why does it only present mail and notes for synch? Is this just how it works, you have to setup the different services seperately for mail, contacts, and calendar? I can't believe that when an iphone has builtin support for exchange.
2. I followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3660 to get ical working for AD users. I also followed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5276 to get push notifications in ical and addressbook working for AD users. It was initially working after following this doc, however now it's not. Even after restarting just get invalid username or password.The log file shows something about an OD crash which seems to coincide with an attempt to login to iCal using AD credentials.
3. I cannot edit user's shortnames via WGM. Even so, it wouldn't accomplish what i need. So i'm fine with just manually creating aliases. I tried to edit the postfix aliases file for a test alias
group: user1, user2
Doesn't work even after restarting mail it says it's unknown user. Mailman doesn't work the way i expected. I need to create distrobution groups, not a maillist.
Anyone know how i can fix these issues?

In essence, yes.
Graylisting is on by default when you configure and enable the Mail Service and it's actually a good thing if you're prepared to be patient. However you may decide you don't actually need it and resort to other methods of filtering mail to your domain. There are many tools available for any enterprise wishing to run it's own private mail server and graylisting is just one option. There are lots of resources explaining graylisting which you can google for yourself.

However the problem you're describing with certificates is not good and you should really clear this up as soon as you can. There are some 'golden rules' regarding servers in general and OS X Server in particular. In no particular order these are:
1 - Start at the end to begin at the beginning (a bit odd but it does make sense if you think about it)
2 - DNS. Get this bit right and everything else will follow
3 - If you mess up the initial configuraton right at the beginning it's best to start again
4 - DNS. Get this bit right and everything else will follow
5 - A lot of features you'd expect from a Mail Server for Enterprise use is not in the GUI. You will have to use Terminal sooner rather than later. This is also true to a lesser degree with other services.
6 - DNS. Get this bit right and everything else will follow
The above is only my opinion.
If you've not already done so you may want to start again (wipe and reinstall) otherwise you may find as time goes on that the instability the server is suffering from at the moment will only get worse and usually when you least want it.

Photoshop CS4 and Mountain Lion Printing Question

I recently downloaded CS4 onto my new Macbook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion and I am not able to print from CS4 to my Epson 3800 printer. When I hit the print button, the light on the Epson 3800 blinks one time but nothing happens. The file does not even get sent to the printing queue.
Photoshop CS4 otherwise works perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro Retina. Additionally, all other applications on my Macbook Retina print perfectly fine on my Epson 3800. For example, I can print from Aperture to the Epson 3800 just fine. I am using the most recent Epson driver from the Epson website.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Since your Epson 3800 printer is working fine with other applications, one workflow work around would be to export your Photoshop file as another format (for example .jpeg, .png, .tiff or even .pdf depending on what your content is). By exporting it as another format, you can open it using other applications (such as Acrobar Reader, or Preview) and print from there. While this is not the most ideal lsolution, it should do the trick if you are in a rush to print.

This helpful page lists all the possible things you can do to reset or fix the problem, it also lists a number of alternatives.

Lion, Finder question

In Lion, I don't like the way finder lists "Today"
"Yesterday", "previous 30 days" when searching,I like the way it use to display my images/ files. Kind of just in order of modified, etc etc …….plenty of way in view options I only want one section, not those others in the window. Is there a way to change that? If you know what I mean?

Choose "Show View Options" from the View menu. Uncheck the "Use relative dates" item and click the "Use as Defaults" button.
Note - In OS versions prior to Lion, this preference would always revert back to using relative dates. With Lion it appears to remain set.

Mountain Lion Dictation Questions

I am using Mountain Lion Dictation and have gotten it to work in its basic form.
I would like to better understand two of the input options, Greatdy System Audio and ProcasterAudioredirector.
I went to the Greatdy site and downloaded their free "SystemAudioPlug-in" but for the life of me I can figure out how to make it work. Greatdy seems to think its pretty easy to use but I don't have a clue.
What I am hoping to accomplish is taking an audio file and passing it through the Mountain Lion Dictation system and end up with a text file version of the audio file. Yep, the audio file is human speech in English.
I can do this with Dragon Dictate v 3 for MAC but I don't want to spend the $150 if I don't have to... the $150 is their Holiday Special price which includes headphones and next day shipping, good deal but...
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You download the plugin which comes to you as a .zip file. Double-click to unzip. Double-click on the resulting plug-in file. You will be prompted to install it, so click on the Install button. That's all there is to it. Apparently, it will enable you to pass system audio to something else. You will have to ask them what applications use the plug-in and how they use it.

What's up with the mountain lion toolbar question mark on the right side?

There was a picture connected to the right side of my toolbar. I deleted it and now a question mark sits in its place. How do I access this and correct it?

The question mark is an orphaned alias. Cmd-drag it off and poof it!

i understand that you dont put php in htaccess i was not refering to it
and looked over the info from provided links
however you can use htacces to overwrite some of the php.ini setting...
i guess i could do that..
but what i was looking is to use custom php.ini for each virtual host and how to set this up or redirect to custom php.ini in website folder ... if there is a way to redirect to php.ini using htaccess could you help out?

Mountain Lion Compatibility question?

Hi,
I'm considering getting the Mountain Lion OS, more out of curiosity than actually really needing any of the new features to be honest. I assume that there won't be any compatibility issues with Apple apps/software such as Logic Pro 9, and iPhoto, but will there be any compatibility issues with other non-apple software such as audacity, wondershare video converter and such like?
This would be the first time I'd have upgraded an OS with Mac as I've had PC's in the past, and most things tend to work fine with the new windows, or soon after there's an update to make it compabitble. Is this the same with Mac?
